Christmas is just around the corner, and we are feeling festive over at Harry Potter HQ! While we know that none of the characters are actually Father Christmas, we’ve had a lot of fun thinking about who might share his energy. Do you agree with our choices? 

## Is Albus Dumbledore’s beard a clue?

Beloved by many and with a beard like freshly fallen snow – are we talking about [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) or Father Christmas? Who knows! It could be either! Both have jobs that focus on looking out for a large number of children. They each have an air of mystery – did we really know where Dumbledore went on his mysterious trips away from [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts)? And we really can’t stress this one enough… just look at their beards! Identical!

In our hunt for Father Christmas, the wise Hogwarts headmaster is a strong contender. However, that’s not to say we don’t have any doubts. Even though he is excellent at keeping secrets, as one of the most recognisable wizards in the entire world, we think it would be hard to keep a double life under wraps. Also, between fighting Dark magic, running a school and eating sherbet lemons – where would he find the time?

## Could grumpy Aberforth Dumbledore be jolly St. Nick?

We don’t just have one Dumbledore on our Christmas radar, we have two! As the brother who had an equally excellent beard but kept a lower profile, it would be foolish not consider [Aberforth](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file). Yes, he was grumpy. Yes, he was a trifle *odd*. Nevertheless, beneath that gruff surface lay a heart of gold. Aberforth truly cared about the students at Hogwarts and helped when it mattered most.

One slight problem, Father Christmas flies around on a sleigh pulled by reindeer. If Aberforth was handing out presents, we all know he would choose to be pulled along by his favourite animals… goats. Perhaps he’s not our hidden holiday hero.

## Hagrid’s care for magical creatures makes a compelling case

Father Christmas must be someone who has an affinity with animals. Between checking that all carrots are evenly distributed, finding time to help build the confidence of the only reindeer with a red nose *and* making sure every present around the world is delivered, it would be chaos if they weren’t. It also sounds like a perfect job for [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid).

Hagrid instantly being best friends with his flying crew is not our only reason. Caring, jolly and thoughtful, his entire personality gives off Father Christmas vibes.

There is just *one* detail that throws everything into doubt… his beard. It might be bushy but it’s the wrong colour and that has us questioning everything.

## Does Arthur Weasley have a festive secret?

Then there’s his beloved shed. It might have been the bane of his [wife’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/molly-weasley) existence, but it was his haven. One where he liked to work on his secret projects… or could that be secret Christmas present projects? Have we discovered *the* toy making hub?

However, to be Father Christmas you have to be totally committed to your role as bringer-of-festive-joy. Arthur was committed to his job… but in the Misuse of Muggle Artefacts Office. It would be impossible to do both at once.

## Have you considered the gift-expert, Horace Slughorn?

We all know that a crucial part of Father Christmas’ job is making a list, then checking it twice, to try and find out who’s naughty or nice. You know who else like lists? [Slughorn](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/horace-slughorn). His [Slug Club](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-slug-club) was filled with all the people on his! Can this be a coincidence? Add to that his merry demeanour, and excellent taste when it came to cultivating presents, and we think we have a case.

Having said that, not only does Slughorn lack the Father Christmas beard but he also lacks his selfless nature. We’re not saying that he was a bad person, but he was snobby – and far more interested in getting presents than giving them.

## Hear us out… what about Vernon Dursley?

We promise we haven’t been [Confunded](/fact-file/spells/the-confundus-charm), we know that the mean-spirited [Vernon Dursley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/vernon-dursley) seems nothing like jolly ol’ St. Nick… but could it all be the perfect cover? Nobody would ever believe it could be true – he was the director of a drill making firm! Extremely boring! Yet, what if Grunnings was actually a *toy* making firm… one where elves made presents for children? Food for thought.

Plus, thanks to his extremely well-maintained moustache, we know Vernon could grow a triumphant Father Christmas beard. His choice to forego the famous facial hair could be part of his plan to keep his identity hidden.

Yet, we highly doubt that someone as wonderful as Father Christmas would be able to maintain such a horrible façade. Vernon was rotten to the core. He wouldn’t care about bringing joy to children around the world. In fact, he’d take all their presents and give them to [Dudley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/dudley-dursley) instead.

Officially, the [Yule Ball](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/yule-ball) wasn’t a [Triwizard Tournament](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/triwizard-tournament) task, but it was just as dramatic. Set against the spectacular backdrop of a wintry [Great Hall](/fact-file/locations/the-great-hall), with a swirling storm of teenage hormones, strong emotions and dancing, the stakes were just as high.

Friendships, love lives and even international relations were on the line and bold moves were made. Whether the characters made the right decisions? Now that’s the real question.

And who better to answer that question than you, the fans! We asked for your hot takes on this glamourous Christmas party and you did not disappoint. Here are just a few of our favourites…

## Was Ron actually a fashion icon?

With everyone donning their dress robes for what was possibly the glitziest event [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) had ever hosted, the Yule Ball was a mix of dazzling fashion wins and dismal fashion fails. [Ron’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ron-weasley) frothy concoction of maroon, lace and great-aunt Tessie smell is the latter… or so we thought. 

It turns out not all of you agree. __David Czarnik__ even claims: ‘*Ron was actually the best dressed at the ball* 👀’. 

You know what, there’s something to be said about how *unique* Ron’s outfit was. It was vintage! Vintage is cool! If he had just worn his robes with a bit more confidence… perhaps he could have pulled it off?

Although, many thought it would take more than an attitude change to make *that* outfit work. 

As __Nancy Gedenberg__ told us: ‘*I have always wondered why they didn't alter Ron's robe with a little magic*’. 

She raises an interesting point! In the *Goblet of Fire* book, Ron did use a [Severing Charm](/fact-file/spells/the-severing-charm) to try and tone down the frilliness. However, Ron is no [Madam Malkin](/fact-file/locations/madam-malkins-robes-for-all-occasions), and his alteration attempts just left him with some ‘depressingly frayed’ edges instead… we’re not sure which is worse.

## Ron’s robes showed that Harry was a bad friend…

That’s right, those who firmly agreed with [Ginny’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ginny-weasley) assessment that Ron’s robes were ‘ghastly’ were incredulous that [Harry](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) had let his friend wear them at all.

Like __Stephanie Marcum__, who had some strong feelings about it: *‘Harry did Ron dirty here. Harry is literally a millionaire. He could easily have bought new dress robes for Ron but instead chose to let him wear those and look like a dork’.*

On the surface, it does seem baffling that Harry didn’t just buy him some better robes. Ron’s were second-hand and out of fashion. However, we think it’s a bit more complicated than that.

Ron was a proud person, but he was also self-conscious about his [family’s](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-weasleys) financial situation and struggled with feelings of being overshadowed. Harry was fully aware of this. He knew that Ron might have been insulted if he just bought him some brand-new robes as he would have found it condescending.

After all, Ron only accepted an expensive pair of [Omnioculars](/fact-file/objects/omnioculars) because Harry told him not to expect another Christmas present for at least a decade. If anything, Harry was being sensitive to Ron’s feelings – that makes him a good friend.

## Pink or blue? You had thoughts on Hermione’s outfit too

The other outfit that had everybody talking – but for all the right reasons – was [Hermione’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger). Or should we say *outfits*? Yes, the belle of the Yule Ball’s dress from the film did not match her dress from the book. It seems that some of you have some strong opinions about that…

Such as __Mary Main__ who was definitely team pink dress: *‘The costume department was right to put Hermione in a pink dress. If her dress was blue (like it was in the books), she would have blended in with the icy decorations and not stood out visually’.*

__Mary__ does make an excellent case and Hermione’s dress did add a pop of warmth to the wintry Great Hall – but we just can’t choose! Both gowns were stunning in their own way… we’re going to sit firmly on the fence for this one.

## The Patil twins should have had better dress robes

There was an overwhelming sense that the Patil twins were hard done by when it came to their Yule Ball experience – they deserved more.

__Jo Schendel__ wanted more for the twins’ Yule Ball look: *‘Padma and Parvati Patils' dresses in the movie were sooo plain. Saris are much more elaborate and pretty’.*

Honestly? We adored the gorgeous shades of pink and orange that [Parvati](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/parvati-patil) and [Padma](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/padma-patil-fact-file) wore in the films. Yet, we’d also love to see how their outfits could be taken to the next level with the help of a few magical details.

## And better dates

That wasn’t __Jo’s__ only frustration with the sisters’ experience. She also took umbrage with *‘their treatment at the hands of their "dates"’.*

Harry and Ron messed up here. They were too busy being stuck in their own heads to make the most of a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Even if there was no romantic spark with their dates, they still could have had a joy-filled evening as friends.

__Anthony Tom__ is one fan who agrees with this: *‘I think Harry should have just had a fun night with Parvati instead of being depressed that he couldn’t go with Cho’.*

Absolutely! With music, dancing and fantastic company, deciding to sulk the entire time is a baffling choice. It wasn’t Parvati or Padma’s fault that Harry and Ron’s romantic dreams had been dashed and honestly, they were both being rather immature about it all.

## Speaking of dates… you had thoughts about who Harry went with

__Andrew Llewellyn Collins__ told us: *‘Harry should have taken Ginny to the ball. It would have given Ron an actual reason to be angry towards him’.*

Well, we know __Andrew__ was firmly ‘Team Harry’ during his *Goblet of Fire* fight with Ron.

Anyway, with Harry and Ginny’s loving marriage and three kids, we agree with this Yule Ball pairing… but not with the reasoning! We found it far too stressful when Harry and Ron were at each other’s throats and would not like to have it happen again – thank-you-very-much.

## And Hermione

With Ron and Hermione’s jealousy-fuelled argument revealing hidden feelings, many saw the Yule Ball as a turning point in their relationship. This was the moment we released that they might be more than just friends.

__Dave Tullio__ had a different perspective though. He believed: *‘Hermione never lit up for Ron the way she did for Viktor Krum’.*

When you compare the difference between how Ron and [Krum](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/viktor-krum) handled the Yule Ball, we can see why he might think this. Viktor Krum took notice of Hermione. He danced with her and made her laugh. He didn’t make her feel like an afterthought. Whereas Ron overlooked Hermione until it was too late and then allowed his jealousy to cast a cloud over her brilliant evening.

Having said that, this was one, small, turbulent moment in Ron and Hermione’s story. There were far more that showed the love and loyalty they had for one another. We’re thrilled that Hermione had a wonderful time with Krum at the dance… but we’re more thrilled that it gave Harry’s best friends the nudge they needed to see each other in a whole new light.

## Some of you questioned whether there should have been dates at all!

As teenagers, the mere thought of asking someone to be our date would cause us to break out in a cold sweat. Growing up is embarrassing enough! Who needs that added pressure? 

__Canisha Russ__ would agree, sharing her view that: ‘*Making the champions find dates because they have to open the ball with a dance is a form of bullying on the school's part* 😂’.

While that approach would have saved Harry (and all of us) from his mortifying ‘Wangoballwime’ moment… the Yule Ball wouldn’t have been the same without the magic of romance.

Once again, the fourth book is an excellent starting point. We admit that having access to magic would make creating a wintry landscape indoors easier (we’re not expecting you to carpet your living room in fake snow), but with a few carefully chosen decorations, you can easily achieve the same vibe.

If you’re feeling crafty, you could forage for some festive foliage to recreate the Yule Ball garlands. Or hang a few well-placed sprigs of mistletoe – which we’re sure will be free of Nargles – to add a bit of romance. Why not channel your primary school days and rustle up some paper snowflakes? ## Yule shall go to the ball
It wouldn’t be a party without people! It was a meaningful moment when witches and wizards from all over joined together to celebrate Christmas and international magical cooperation. As it's the season of goodwill, now is the ideal time to embrace this mentality when creating your guest list. Your Yule Ball could be an opportunity to reconnect and celebrate with your friends, family and community. 

While that’s all very lovely, there is one other (possibly awkward) element when it comes to wondering who to invite to your party. The Yule Ball is a dance. A dance where you need a partner. A dance where you need… a date. For some of the Harry Potter characters that proved to be *quite* the challenge.

## Dress to impress

The Yule Ball was a formal event and an extremely glamorous one at that. As the dress code made clear, everyone was expected to wear their finest dress robes. While there were some fashion faux-pas – Ron’s monstrosity of maroon, lace and the aroma of his great-aunt Tessie – there were some style sensations too.

## Add musical magic and dance the night away…

There can be no dancing without music! In *Goblet of Fire*, the famous wizarding rock band, The Weird Sisters, were the headline act of the Yule Ball.
