Auror Fact File Body Text

Aurors were highly trained witches and wizards working for the [Ministry of Magic](/fact-file/locations/the-ministry-of-magic) as law enforcement officials. With a focus on [dark magic](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dark-arts), Aurors were highly skilled in [Defence Against the Dark Arts](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/defence-against-the-dark-arts) as well as how to apprehend and detain dangerous dark witches and wizards. When Harry Potter became involved in defeating [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) after his return, he was helped by Aurors such as Nymphadora Tonks, Alastor ‘Mad-Eye’ Moody and Kingsley Shacklebolt, all of whom were willing to risk their lives for the cause they believed in.

MACUSA Fact File Body Text

The Magical Congress of the United States of America (MACUSA) was located in New York within the Woolworth Building. The building was also in use by the [No-Maj](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) community, but the owl carved over the entrance provided alternative magical access for America's witches and wizards. Concerned largely with keeping the magical community hidden from the No-Majs and preventing fraternisation between the two, MACUSA housed a giant clock that measures the magical exposure threat, such is the strong desire to maintain a high level of secrecy. Newt Scamander Fact File Body Text

Newt Scamander was a Magizoologist who travelled the world in the early 20th century researching magical creatures. On his travels, he carried a [magically enhanced suitcase](/fact-file/objects/newt-scamanders-case), capable of housing his fantastic beasts. On his travels, he carried out research for his seminal textbook [Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them](/fact-file/objects/fantastic-beasts-and-where-to-find-them), but his travels weren't purely academic. During the 1920s, Newt found himself embroiled in the events surrounding the rise of [Gellert Grindelwald](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/gellert-grindelwald), working with his old teacher and friend, [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore), to stand against him.

Gellert Grindelwald Fact File Body Text

Gellert Grindelwald’s belief in the superiority of wizards over their [Muggle](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) counterparts was controversial in the 1920s, but nevertheless attracted wide support from witches and wizards who were tired of having to hide their magical abilities. Expelled from his school, [Durmstrang](/fact-file/locations/durmstrang-institute), for ‘twisted experiments’, Gellert went on to form a close friendship with [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore), and the pair spent many hours seeking out the Deathly Hallows and debating how they might be used to reform the wizarding world. Their friendship was irrevocably destroyed after a tragic accident and whilst Dumbledore worked for good, Grindelwald's path took a darker turn.

Porpentina (or Tina) Goldstein was an American witch who was an [Auror](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/auror) for the Magical Congress of the United States of America ([MACUSA](/fact-file/locations/macusa)). After getting in trouble for assaulting a No-Maj (US term for Muggle), Tina was almost fired. That is until she met her future love-interest, [Newt Scamander](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/newt-scamander), and became embroiled in the hunt for [Gellert Grindelwald](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/gellert-grindelwald).

Duelling Fact File Body Text

Duelling was a type of formal combat between two or more witches or wizards – where only magical acts could be used as a form of offence or attack. Before a duel, the opponents would bow to show their mutual respect and then wait for a count of three to start. Although some duels ended in death, students were also able to practice the art of duelling at [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) and it also existed as a competitive sport with rigorous rules about the curses, hexes and charms allowed to be used.
