Universal Studios Hollywood brings extra magic for Harry Potter fans this spring with Universal Fan Fest Nights

Coming April and May this year, Universal Studios Hollywood is launching Universal Fan Fest Nights across many of its parks, and for you readers, this means some exciting activities for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. 

Guests will be able to bump into surprise magical creatures, such as the Niffler, the beautiful Occamy (which you can see below) and even a baby dragon (!) and then be treated to a breathtaking light projection show across Hogwarts castle – simply titled “Hogwarts Always”. This dazzling display promises to be a nostalgic delight – with the castle hosting beautiful music and classic Harry Potter moments projected across its walls.  

There will also be opportunities to try out some of the rides at night-time (if you dare!) such as Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey™ and Flight of the Hippogriff™.

The whole affair should be paradise for any Harry Potter fan – and ticket-holders can expect to discover interactive, celebratory activations all throughout the theme park, including live entertainment, cosplay and cosplay competitions, group meetups and photo opportunities. Bloomsbury Children’s Books have announced today the launch of a new series of companion books to the Harry Potter stories - *Pocket Potters: Little guides to the Harry Potter stories by J.K Rowling*. 2025 will see the launch of the first three books, *Harry Potter*, *Ron Weasley* and *Hermione Granger*, with even more fun to come in 2026 and beyond.  

A range of illustrators have worked across the series, using their unique artistic flair to bring the wizarding world to life. These companion guides are packed full of magical illustrations, much-loved characters and iconic Hogwarts moments that capture the humour and mischief of the magical world. In our opinion, they would make the perfect gift for the curious fan in your life.

In *Harry Potter*, illustrator Natalie Smillie has captured the personality of the Boy-Who-Lived perfectly. Join Harry as he discovers the wizarding world and finds his home at Hogwarts. Expect Quidditch fun, a peek at the cupboard under the stairs and even a dragon – exciting!

Olia Muza is no stranger to the wizarding world having been one of the illustrators featured in *The Harry Potter Wizarding Almanac*. She has now turned her attention to the Pocket Potters and is responsible for perfectly capturing the humour, mayhem and joy that make Ron, well, Ron. In *Ron Weasley* you can expect to see his loving but rambunctious family, Scabbers scurrying, a mishap with a flying car and feasting – lots of feasting.

Last but by in no way least, we have *Hermione Granger* which has been illustrated by Laura Proietti. Hermione’s guide needed to reflect that brilliant brain of hers. With everything from brewing Polyjuice Potion, her stomping ground of the Hogwarts Library to her ability to pick up any spell as quick as you can say swish and flick – this guide shows exactly why she is known as the cleverest witch of her age.

The first three *Pocket Potters: Little guides to the Harry Potter stories* are set to be published on the 26th August 2025 in 25 languages and will be published by Scholastic in the US. The series is only set to grow in 2026 with a further four books publishing, including Professor Albus Dumbledore illustrated by Paola Escobar, with more titles planned.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child to launch in Brazil and the Netherlands

It's a huge day for *Cursed Child* fans, as the hit play continues its worldwide takeover with new plans to open in two more countries.  

Next year, *Cursed Child* will open in Brazil, and will be performed in Portuguese. 

The following year, in 2026, the play launches in the Netherlands, performed in Dutch, with the venue to be announced soon. 

These productions will be the ninth and tenth versions of *Cursed Child* respectively, with the play already having cast its spell in San Francisco, Toronto and Melbourne – while productions continue to play in London, New York, Hamburg and Tokyo as we speak. The play is also on a North American tour, currently stationed in Chicago.

Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender spoke of their excitement bringing the eighth Harry Potter story to these new audiences. 

‘We are thrilled to be launching two new productions of *Harry Potter and the Cursed Child*,’ they said in a joint statement.

‘The story and themes of Harry Potter - friendship, self-discovery, courage, sacrifice, love and forgiveness, and of course growing up and the challenges of parenting - resonates with so many people around the world, and we are excited to be able to share our play with new audiences in Brazil and the Netherlands. We look forward to collaborating with our producing partners VME and Stage Entertainment to bring the magic of *Harry Potter and the Cursed Child* to two new countries.’ 

The two new productions will be performed as the reimagined, one-part version of the play (which are also performed this way in New York and Tokyo) and will be the first time Cursed Child has been performed in Portuguese and Dutch. 

Now, our language skills aren’t that fantastic, but, ahem, we are excited for our Dutch and Portuguese-speaking fans to be able to see this beautiful story of heks, tovenaars, bruxas and bruxos! (That’s ‘witches and wizards’ in Dutch and Portuguese, we hope.)

Exciting news from Harry Potter HQ today – where we learnt more details about the upcoming HBO Original Series, commencing production in summer, 2025, slated to launch on Max. Expect characters not seen in the original films and different locations to be involved – and also, discover just how many people auditioned to be Harry, Ron and Hermione! But despite the new additions, the show will be coming back to its roots where the original films were made, returning to Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden.

With the series now officially underway, we heard from director Mark and showrunner Francesca, who revealed their own love of the stories ('I am a mega-fan like crazy!' Francesca confessed) alongside the creative vision they want to bring to this retelling of the Harry Potter stories.

‘We have 8 hours to tell the first book’, the pair revealed, ‘so we can dig into the real depths and crevices and how the language of magic can evolve.’  

‘We follow the ethos of the films to source some of the finest cream of British talent,’ Mark added.

‘We’re obsessed, basically!’ they joked.  

We also learnt that over 30,000 (!) people auditioned for the roles of Harry, Ron and Hermione during the [open casting call](https://www.harrypotter.com/news/open-casting-call-for-harry-ron-and-hermione-in-uk-and-ireland) earlier this year, and although the golden trio have yet to be cast, Mark admitted they watched ‘every single audition’ and there’s ‘a couple of crackers.’  

The new Harry Potter series will be a fresh adaptation of the books, going deeper into Harry’s story and featuring a brand-new cast for both old fans & new to get to know. We were also teased characters that are set to appear in the show that we did not visit in the films – such as the mischievous [poltergeist Peeves!](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/characters-and-pets/peeves)

'We’ll get to have some fun with Peeves in the corridors!' the duo divulged.

Iconic locations will return, of course, (‘we don’t want to mess with the likes of the Great Hall, but other elements of Hogwarts we will expand’) but Mark was also excited to explore other places not seen before, such as the Hogwarts staffroom, and examining the changing aesthetics of the school.

‘We went with the idea that Hogwarts is a real place,’ he explained, hoping to explore the architectural themes of the ancient castle and how they would evolve over time.

'So there will be elements of Georgian architecture, attempts at naturalism. Because, of course, we have the luxury of long-form storytelling.'

'We’re both massively fond of the movies, they’re amazing, what an amazing feat of creative pursuits,' Francesca said. 'We get a bigger sandpit to play in.’ 

Mark and Francesca were also keen to stay canonically accurate to the ages of certain characters, citing that Snape would've only been 31 in 1991, where the events of *Philosopher's Stone* take place. 

‘No one can replace Alan Rickman, but we can find the next generation,’ the pair added.

As we revealed earlier this year, the show is executive produced by J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films – while Francesca Gardiner (showrunner) also serves as executive producer alongside director Mark Mylod.
