Spells and potions a first-year learns at Hogwarts

## Transfiguring matches into needles

As Professor McGonagall says, [Transfiguration](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/magical-miscellany/transfiguration) is complex and dangerous magic. We are talking about changing the molecular structure of an object to transform it into something else, after all. Given a group of 11-year-olds, some who have never used a wand before, it’s therefore advisable to… start small. In the golden trio’s first Transfiguration lesson, the students were tasked to do as prefect Percy Weasley predicted: turn matches into needles.

The *Acufors* spell (the incantation of which is revealed in the [new HBO series teaser](https://www.harrypotter.com/news/watch-the-new-teaser-trailer-for-hbo-original-series-harry-potter-and-the-philosophers-stone)) might seem simple, but it’s much harder than it looks. Despite Harry giving it his best effort, Hermione was (predictably) the only one in the class who managed to successfully transform her match into anything remotely resembling a needle in her first lesson, earning her a ‘rare smile’ from the firm but fair McGonagall.

## The levitation charm

Probably the most memorable spell that Harry, Ron and Hermione learnt in their first year, [*Wingardium Leviosa*](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/spells/the-levitation-charm) got them out of more than a few scrapes over the course of their school careers. First-years usually begin by levitating light objects like feathers, then gradually progress to heavier items (like, say, a motorbike’s side car) if they get the technique right.

spells-and-potions-a-first-year-learns-at-hogwarts-text-section-3

Although a basic spell, it’s important that the movement and the pronunciation of the charm are correct. As Professor Flitwick demonstrated in the trio’s first-year Charms class, the ‘swish and flick’ is fundamental. Hermione's insistence on the correct pronunciation ‘Wing-*gar*-dium Levi-*o*-sa’ might have had Ron rolling his eyes, but it was a good job he was listening to her… That mountain troll incident would have ended very differently otherwise.

## Transfiguring a mouse into a snuff-box

By the time the trio got to their first end of year exams, they had progressed from matches and needles to… small rodents and boxes. It might not be as impressive as McGonagall turning her desk into a pig, but it’s getting there. It should be noted though that if the snuff-box still had whiskers, points were docked.

## Remembering a Forgetfulness potion

Nothing quite says ‘exam panic’ like a practical [Potions](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/magical-miscellany/potions) test with Professor Snape breathing down your neck. In Harry’s first year, the students were subjected to trying to remember how to make a Forgetfulness potion. After mixing Lethe River water, Valerian, and Mistletoe berries, you then… Oh, we’ve forgotten the rest.

## Making a pineapple tap dance

spells-and-potions-a-first-year-learns-at-hogwarts-text-section-6

Professor Flitwick’s practical exam for the first-years was exactly what it says on the tin… making a pineapple perform a tap dance. Is it the most useful spell in the world? No. Do we respect Flitwick for inventing a Charms test designed purely for his own entertainment? Yes.

## Everything else Hermione managed to learn

We may only see inside a handful of first-year lessons at Hogwarts… But that’s not to say that some scholarly witches and wizards haven’t tried a few more ‘simple spells’ outside the classroom. Enter Hermione Granger. In addition to the magical curriculum, the brilliant witch performed these striking spells within mere months of realising she could even do magic:

### The bluebell flames spell

Who knew how useful producing fire would be? Well, our ancestors we suppose, but still… Hermione’s ability to conjure up bluebell flames came to the rescue more than once in her first year. Carried in a jam jar, they were the perfect portable heater for a chilly stroll through the Hogwarts courtyards. When she suspected a certain teacher of foul play during a Quidditch match, they served as a well-timed distraction. Faced with a killer plant that hates heat and light, she had a sure-fire way to defeat it.

### The ‘tricky little charm’

spells-and-potions-a-first-year-learns-at-hogwarts-text-section-8

Hermione’s creativity and house pride shone through with this charm to support Harry in his first ever Quidditch match against Slytherin. Capping off a crafternoon with her classmates, Hermione’s impressive spell made the paint on their homemade Gryffindor banner light up, complementing Dean Thomas’s hand-drawn lion roaring to life. In case you missed it, you can see this glorious moment in the [latest teaser for the HBO Original Series](https://www.harrypotter.com/news/watch-the-new-teaser-trailer-for-hbo-original-series-harry-potter-and-the-philosophers-stone)!

Hermione’s mastery of [*Alohomora*](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/spells/the-unlocking-charm) may have opened the door to a ferocious three-headed dog who looked ready to attack her, Harry, Ron and Neville (new fear unlocked) but it did help them uncover what was being hidden at Hogwarts. What’s an adventure without a little danger, anyway?

### The full Body-Bind Curse

Note to selves: Don’t get in between Hermione and the Gryffindor common room exit when she knows [*Petrificus Totalus*](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/spells/the-full-body-bind)…

Neville’s arms snapped to his sides. His legs sprang together. His whole body rigid, he swayed where he stood and then fell flat on his face, stiff as a board. Hermione ran to turn him over. Neville’s jaws were jammed together so he couldn’t speak. Only his eyes were moving, looking at them in horror.

## 10. Helga Hufflepuff is still the key to her house

To enter the Hufflepuff common room, students face an unassuming pile of barrels. If they tap the correct one to the rhythm of ‘Helga Hufflepuff,’ it opens, granting access to their cosy sanctuary. While the common room passwords for the other three houses change frequently (much to [Neville](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom)’s despair) Hufflepuff students can rest in the knowledge that theirs is comfortingly consistent; all thanks to Helga.

The punishment for those who pick the wrong barrel, or tap incorrectly? The offending cask will drench them in vinegar. That smell will stay on your robes all term.

## 9. Godric Gryffindor’s home town has gone down in history

‘Bold Gryffindor, from wild moor’ was born in a typical English village in the West Country, which only increased in fame as the centuries passed. In the years since the Hogwarts founder lived there, [Godric’s Hollow](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/locations/godrics-hollow) has been home to a host of legendary witches and wizards: the Dumbledore family, *A History of Magic* author Bathilda Bagshot, Golden Snitch creator Bowman Wright, and of course the Potters. The village church is said to be heavily haunted by the ancient magical families buried there.

## 8. Did Rowena Ravenclaw dream up Hogwarts?

It’s a popular wizarding theory that the name ‘Hogwarts’ was the brainchild of Rowena Ravenclaw. Despite her impressive wisdom, it was a simple vision that sealed the school’s name. Legend has it that she dreamt one night of a warty hog that led her to a cliff by a lake. The rest is history... or should we say legend.

## 7. Salazar Slytherin left a deadly parting gift in the school

The Hogwarts founders were great friends… Until a fundamental conflict of viewpoints broke them apart. Salazar Slytherin distrusted Muggle-born wizards and insisted that only ‘pure-blood’ students should be admitted to the school. This caused a major rift between Slytherin and the other founders, causing him to leave Hogwarts for good.

However, he left a lethal legacy behind. The story goes that Slytherin built a hidden chamber below the school, unbeknownst to the other founders. The Chamber of Secrets would remain sealed until his ‘true heir’ arrived and opened it, unleashing a gigantic [Basilisk](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/creatures/basilisk) that would purge the school of all the Muggle-born students. And we thought Hogwarts was a safe place!

## 6. Godric’s sword is a sore subject for some

As Godric Gryffindor was a gifted duellist, both with a wand and a sword, it makes sense that he commissioned his own signature blade to represent his house. The famous [Sword of Gryffindor](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/objects/the-sword-of-gryffindor) was made by prolific goblin silversmith Ragnuk the First. Made of pure silver and inset with rubies, the sword turned out even better than even the maker imagined.

WEB-COLLECTION-godric-gryffindor-promo-crop

top-10-fascinating-facts-hogwarts-founders-text-section-5

In fact, it was so glorious that Ragnuk changed his mind about giving it away at all. He pretended that Gryffindor had stolen it from him and attempted to take it back. Even though he failed, the myth of Gryffindor’s ‘theft’ is still popular among goblins, who think the rare artefact rightfully belongs to them. However, seeing as the sword presents itself specifically to worthy Gryffindors in their time of need, its allegiance is pretty clear.

## 5. Helga was the founder of the feast

With its common room next to the kitchens, you could argue that Hufflepuff is the ‘foodie’ house; and we’re sure their founder would condone this. Helga Hufflepuff was particularly gifted at Charms, particularly food-related spells, and some of her tried-and-tested recipes still frequent the Hogwarts feasts. Her influence on the school kitchens doesn’t stop there. The Hufflepuff founder was also responsible for bringing [house-elves](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/creatures/house-elf) into the castle as cooks, giving them fair working conditions and a refuge within Hogwarts, at a time when they would have been very poorly treated elsewhere.

## 4. Rowena’s daughter became a Hogwarts ghost

Rowena Ravenclaw’s daughter, Helena, was jealous of her mother’s incredible intelligence. Convinced that her famous [diadem](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/objects/ravenclaws-diadem) was the source of her wisdom, Helena stole it from Rowena and ran away to the forests of Albania. It wasn’t until Rowena was on her deathbed that she sent a man she believed to love her daughter, to bring her home.

WEB-COLLECTION-rowena-ravenclaw-promo-crop

Big mistake. When Helena refused to return with the man, he murdered her; and so she became Ravenclaw’s ghost, the [Grey Lady](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/characters-and-pets/the-grey-lady). Rowena is said to have died of a broken heart, all thanks to the brutality of a familiar haunting figure…

## 3. The Bloody Baron killed Helena Ravenclaw

You read that right: the man who murdered Rowena Ravenclaw’s daughter in a fit of rage went on to become Slytherin’s house ghost, the [Bloody Baron](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/characters-and-pets/the-bloody-baron)! As soon as he committed his heinous crime, he felt so much remorse that he took his own life. The brooding ghost’s chains are said to be an ‘act of penitence’ for killing Helena.

## 2. Godric Gryffindor gifted more than his sword to Hogwarts

When they initially set up the houses, the Hogwarts founders personally decided which students belonged in which. As they approached old age, they realised they would need a longer-term solution for when they were gone. Enter… Godric Gryffindor’s hat! Yes, the [Sorting Hat](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/objects/the-sorting-hat) was taken from Gryffindor’s very own head, enchanted with the intelligence of all four founders, and continued sorting students for centuries to come.

## 1. Slytherin’s descendant founded another magical school

Irish witch Isolt Sayre, a distant descendant of Salazar, put a completely different spin on the Slytherin legacy in the 1600s. After her fanatical pure-blood aunt murdered her liberal parents, Isolt fled to America. She soon started a family and set up her own wizarding school in Massachusetts: [Ilvermorny](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/locations/ilvermorny).

Co-founded with her ‘No-Maj’ husband, it is one of the most democratic, least elitist of all the great wizarding schools. Remarkably, she also owned Salazar Slytherin’s wand... And put it to good use. [Isolt](https://www.harrypotter.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/ilvermorny) buried the inactive wand outside the grounds of Ilvermorny, where it grew into a mysterious snakewood tree with powerful medicinal properties.

Creating a truly inclusive school AND putting Slytherin’s wand in the ground? Salazar would not have seen eye-to-eye with this witch!

From the moment [Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) first appeared in [Privet Drive](/fact-file/locations/number-four-privet-drive), we knew that the Harry Potter films were going to be something special. Honestly, we still get emotional remembering what it was like to see [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) on screen for the first time. With that in mind, what better way would there be to celebrate the anniversary of the first film than recreating that extra-special cinema experience?

Luckily, over the Back to Hogwarts period, the sounds of ‘Yer a wizard, Harry’ will be ringing out in cinemas around the world as *Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone* will make a return to the silver screen. Grab your popcorn, your nearest and dearest and go back to where the magic began.

## You need to embrace the nostalgia

Speaking of heading back in time, with it being almost a quarter of a century since the first film came out, it’s safe to say that the world we live in now looks rather different to how it did back then. Which is why we think another brilliant way to celebrate the anniversary would be to embrace the warmth and nostalgia of the world of Harry Potter.

## Why not throw your own 25th anniversary party?

Over here, we love a good Harry Potter party and think that the anniversary is an excellent excuse to dust off our glad rags and throw a spectacular soiree! However, actually planning a party can be rather daunting, so we’ve got a few helpful hints to make this one magic.

how-to-have-your-own-harry-potter-and-the-philosophers-stone-25th-anniversary-celebration-text-section-6

## Find your ideal theme

First things first, no party is complete without a theme. You might be wondering isn’t the first film a theme by itself? Yes, absolutely! You could definitely throw the most memorable event based on the film in its entirety. However, as the wizarding world is so vast and varied, it would be equally cool to home in on one element or theme from the film.

![HP-F1-sorting-ceremony-students-great-hall-web-landscape](//contentful.harrypotter.com/usf1vwtuqyxm/2Ub5Iulp4tF2CxS1k1DZNT/1d6083622ef690688bf0b81caa847977/HP-F1-sorting-ceremony-students-great-hall-web-landscape.jpg)
Why not lean into the idea of Harry’s first [Sorting Ceremony](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-sorting-ceremony) and encourage a bit of friendly house rivalry? You could decorate your party space with the house colours and mascots, come dressed as your favourite character from your house and even sort all of your friends into their houses!

![HP-F1-harry-looking-at-hogwarts-letter-web-landscape](//contentful.harrypotter.com/usf1vwtuqyxm/txYmSmIhvlJ6nZHnPrQzl/805e5f9798f91e0875a514ebf6a03d9d/HP-F1-harry-looking-at-hogwarts-letter-web-landscape.jpg)
With this being a celebration of the first film and Harry’s first year at Hogwarts, we think it would be fun to take the idea of ‘firsts’ one step further and centre everything on Harry’s first experiences of the wizarding world – like sending your guests their [very own personalised Hogwarts Letter](https://www.harrypotter.com/linkout?destination=https%3A%2F%2Fharrypottershop.co.uk%2Fproducts%2Fpersonalised-hogwarts-acceptance-letter%3Futm_source%3Dwwd_web%26utm_medium%3Dnewsarticle%26utm_campaign%3DShop%26utm_content%3D25th-anniversary-celebration).\*

Or add an extra splash of excitement to the proceedings with a ‘Through the Trapdoor’ inspired party – complete with all sorts of weird and wonderful games based on the trials that the trio faced.

## Craft the perfect decorations

![create-your-own-diy-castle-build-craft-final-image](//contentful.harrypotter.com/usf1vwtuqyxm/6LNxvJpRBy99NKluyMj3OS/c75e27e9d01de5c0a49d3828c674873a/Make-it-Magic_Hogwarts-Castle__1_.jpg)
Once you have settled on your theme, it’s time to make your vision a reality with some excellent decorations! For those who are fans of the homemade, why not put your crafting skills to the test and relive the moment Harry saw Hogwarts for the first time by building your very own [magical castle](https://www.harrypotter.com/features/create-your-very-own-hogwarts-castle)? Just imagine the looks on your guests faces as they see your stunning recreation.

Or perhaps you want to take inspiration from the end of year celebrations from the first film and fill every surface with your homemade house banners and colours. [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) may have won in *Philosopher’s Stone* but that doesn’t mean your party couldn’t be a celebration of every house! You could even make these fun [Hogwarts house bookmarks](https://www.harrypotter.com/features/make-your-own-hogwarts-house-bookmarks) for each of your guests.

## It’s all fun and games

Every party needs entertainment and your 25th anniversary shindig is no exception! There are so many ways you can add a wizarding twist – here are just a few ideas for inspiration.

![HP-F1-harry-hermione-raised-hand-classroom-web-landscape](//contentful.harrypotter.com/usf1vwtuqyxm/4CG5OnlYAkMj0X6I4QhtAr/a7fc7deb95e7be6255d3f22dd97428e1/HP-F1-harry-hermione-raised-hand-classroom-web-landscape.jpg)
You could host the film quiz to end all film quizzes and find out who truly is the biggest Harry Potter expert among your nearest and dearest. Add a bit of rivalry by trying to win points for your houses. Don’t forget to check out our quizzes, such as our [*Philosopher’s Stone* opening lines quiz](https://www.harrypotter.com/quiz/do-you-know-these-characters-opening-lines-from-the-first-harry-potter-film), to help create your questions!

![HP-F1-philosophers-stone-harry-birthday-cake-closeup-wand-web-landscape](//contentful.harrypotter.com/usf1vwtuqyxm/5YiBHchbx8emWtxGHXyuw3/1f18de6b74f85f6e32c17f739097a7a8/HP-F1-philosophers-stone-harry-birthday-cake-closeup-wand-web-landscape)
The moment that Hagrid burst onto our screen with Harry’s pink and green birthday cake will always be iconic. Pay homage to that moment by having your own mini bake-off inspired by Hagrid’s colourful creation.

![HP-F1-fluffy-the-three-headed-dog-web-landscape](//contentful.harrypotter.com/usf1vwtuqyxm/1gKK2HZ2UVVrXSZqNIaHTx/9aa416db7d1f73ab414079f40cef1203/HP-F1-fluffy-the-three-headed-dog-web-landscape__1_.jpg)
Plus, you can’t go wrong with the basics. For example, swap your very [Muggle](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) ‘pin the tail on the donkey’ for the very magical (and trickier) ‘pin the heads on [Fluffy](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/fluffy-fact-file)’.

All games need prizes and your anniversary party is no exception! Once again, the Harry Potter Shop have just the thing! You don’t just need to watch *Philosopher’s Stone* to have a cosy 25th anniversary celebration. It’s also the perfect opportunity to spend time together as a family and bond over a shared activity. With details such as the first LEGO® Hedwig snowy owl figure with closed wings, a replica Philosopher’s Stone and a movable Queen of the wizard chess board (among many more surprises), we think there would be no better place to start than with the [Harry Potter Philosopher's Stone – Collectors' Edition](https://www.harrypotter.com/linkout?destination=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lego.com%2Fen-gb%2Fproduct%2Fsorcerers-stone-collectors-edition-76466%3Futm_source%3Dwwd_web%26utm_medium%3Dnewsarticle%26utm_campaign%3D3rdEcomm%26utm_content%3D25th-anniversary-celebration) from The LEGO Group®. **

If you’ve been collecting the stunning recent Illustrated Editions of the Harry Potter books, you’ve got a spooky season treat coming up very soon. On 6 October, Harry’s journey continues with a magically evocative edition of *Half-Blood Prince* illustrated by prolific artist Levi Pinfold. Levi has taken over the mantle from Jim Kay to illustrate the last two books in the series, and from everything we’ve seen so far, he’s capturing the dark depths of Harry’s final chapters perfectly. Just feast your eyes on this cover…

From the sinister sisterly moment at Spinner’s End, to Katie Bell’s cursed Hogsmeade trip, a troubled Harry and, of course, that infamous cave scene, we’ve already had a sneak peek at some of Levi’s [hauntingly atmospheric illustrations for *Half-Blood Prince* here](https://www.harrypotter.com/news/the-spectacular-cover-of-harry-potter-and-the-half-blood-prince-illustrated-edition-has-been-revealed).

We could stare at the artwork for hours… But there will be plenty of time for that when the book is released! In the meantime, let’s hear from the artist himself. From drawing on childhood memories for iconic locations, to his penchant for the Pensieve, here’s a glimpse into the mind of *Half-Blood Prince* illustrator Levi Pinfold. Starting with the question we ask everyone on meeting them…

q-and-a-with-levi-pinfold-half-blood-prince-text-section-3

## Which Hogwarts house do you most identify with?

I think I’m a Huffle-Gryff-Slyther-Clawrian! If I had to choose one, it would probably be Hufflepuff though. I love animals… and I think Hufflepuffs have amazing qualities: I aspire to be more like them.

## Which scene was your favourite to illustrate?

I really enjoyed the Pensieve scenes. I just loved the whole ‘book within a book’ concept, that whole narrative of Ogden going to see the Gaunts in the Gaunts’ house. That was super exciting to me. It was one of the most evocative scenes in the book for me personally. I think it’s got all those elements that I grew up reading in Gothic literature, all the crumbling estates and the character’s mental state echoing that. I just absolutely loved it: I had such a blast doing it.

I also really enjoyed Spinner’s End as it was inspired by an old mill across the canal from the engineering firm my dad used to work at.

## Do you have a favourite character to illustrate?

It’s Dumbledore for me. All the complexities of his character, trying to get his attitude correctly… I just really love depicting him. I think he’s such an amazing character.

## What is your favourite Harry Potter book and why?

Well, my favorite prior to now has always been *Prisoner of Azkaban*, because that was when I really started engaging with the series. But now I’d have to say *Deathly Hallows*. I’ve emotionally connected with it, and being able to draw the Forest of Dean where I grew up is special. My earliest memories are there so I feel personally connected. It’s also just so masterfully tied up at the end. It just moves at a breakneck pace, and it’s such a page turner.

## What were some of your favourite children’s books growing up?

The first book I ever read for myself was *The Three Billy-goats Gruff*. It was a Ladybird book illustrated by Robert Lumley, with knockout illustrations. I bought it for my kids recently and it’s going down the generations in this household. When I got a bit older, I was into *The Iron Man* by Ted Hughes, and we had all the Terry Pratchett books. But the number one spot probably has to go to *The Hobbit*… maybe *The Sword in the Stone* too…

## If your reading list is never-ending… You’re bookworm Hermione

Do you sleep soundly at night knowing you have a foot-tall pile of books next to your bed? Do you have four reads on rotation at any given time? Then you align with Hermione in her purest form… a lifelong booklover. You’ve read for fun as long as you can remember and you’re on first-name terms with your local librarian. When someone tells you that they ‘don’t really read,’ it takes all your willpower to resist rolling your eyes.

After all, reading isn’t just a hobby. Hermione’s book knowledge literally saved lives. Whether deciphering a deadly potion puzzle, surviving a Basilisk encounter, or solving the key to the Deathly Hallows, she proved time and time again that reading is just as powerful as magic. You can use this logic next time someone tries to drag you out to a party when you’d rather a night in with a book. You’re welcome.

which-hermione-are-you-most-like-text-section-3

## If you pack for holiday a month in advance… You’re hyper-organised Hermione

which-hermione-are-you-most-like-text-section-4

There are two types of people: those who book the holiday, make the packing list, organise travel insurance, and check everyone into the flight… and those who ask what resort you’re staying in when you’ve already taken off. If you’re the former, we reckon we know what your favourite magical object is.

All hail… Hermione’s [beaded bag](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/objects/hermiones-beaded-bag). If you think that this bottomless, bountiful bag is the absolute peak use of magic, then you are Hermione the organised extraordinaire. From memorising her set texts before she even reached Hogwarts, to mastering the [Time-Turner](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/objects/time-turner) in her third year to create a seemingly impossible school timetable, you admired Hermione’s dedication to efficiency long before she packed for the Horcrux hunt. You channel your inner Hermione whenever you open a new life admin spreadsheet, safe in the knowledge that your more impulsive friends will appreciate you making their lives run smoother. And believe us, they do (even if they don’t always say it).

Did you cheer when Hermione slapped Draco in the face? Okay, we all did to be fair, but if you think about that moment every day then you’re Hermione at her most savage. Don’t get you wrong, you’re a forgiving person; everyone’s allowed to make mistakes. BUT (and this is a big one) if someone is deliberately hurting you or your friends… Their scot-free days are numbered.

Was it ill advised to set fire to a Snape’s cloak in a tightly crowded Quidditch stand? Debatable. Did Rita Skeeter deserve to be forced into her beetle form, trapped in a glass jar and blackmailed? Probably. Was it harsh to hex [Marietta Edgecombe](https://www.harrypotter.com/features/was-hermione-too-harsh-on-marietta-edgecombe)’s face with traitorous spots that probably haunted her nightmares for years to come? Maybe… but it did the trick. They would all think twice about crossing Hermione again. And it all made you respect her even more.

which-hermione-are-you-most-like-text-section-7

## Do your friends go to you for relationship advice? You’re emotionally intelligent Hermione

Scholastic-Goblet-of-Fire-Illustration-The-Yule-Ball

which-hermione-are-you-most-like-text-section-8

Hermione’s intellect extended beyond the realm of books; she was much better at reading people than Harry or Ron were throughout school. She twigged that Ron probably had feelings for her around the same point that he first realised that she was, in fact, a girl. She wasn’t wrong when she trepidatiously called out Harry’s ‘saving people’ complex. (sorry not sorry). Not to mention her iconic explanation for why [Cho Chang](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/characters-and-pets/cho-chang) could possibly be emotionally conflicted by kissing Harry less than a year after her ex-boyfriend – and Harry’s [Triwizard](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/magical-miscellany/triwizard-tournament) competitor – was dispatched by Voldemort... we’ll never look at a teaspoon in the same way again.

If this slightly exasperated Hermione resonates with you, we bet that you’re the relationship guru of your friend group. You use your natural empathy to encourage people to put their egos aside, see other perspectives, and just communicate. Mainly so that you can get on with your own life!
