## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

Like an amalgamation of the ‘Golden Trio’ — Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley — Newt is a wizard brimming with brains, heart and courage. Above everything else, however, is his unwavering kindness; from the beasts he looks after to the Obscurial Credence, Newt’s affinity for all creatures and his care for their wellbeing is at the heart of his character.  

J.K. Rowling described Newt as an outsider. ‘My heroes are always people who feel themselves to be set apart, stigmatised or othered’, she explained. ‘That’s at the heart of most of what I write, and it’s certainly at the heart of *Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them*.’ It’s certainly the impression of Newt we have when he takes those first steps off the boat and enters New York. Not only is he an Englishman in America, but the ways of the Wizarding Worlds in the UK and in the USA are very different.  

His outsider status, though, extends beyond being a newcomer in the Big Apple. Newt’s relationships with his fantastic beasts, it could be argued, takes precedence over his relationships with other human beings. It’s evident, for example, when he eagerly goes in search for the Erumpent, despite Tina and Queenie’s hospitality. His own safety is also secondary, too. While he’s beginning to understand that in New York the use of magic is dangerous, he understands that the escaped creatures he’s brought with him in his suitcase are at greater risk — as he explained to Jacob Kowalski: ‘They're currently in alien terrain surrounded by millions of the most vicious creatures on the planet... humans.’ 

That’s not to say that Newt lacks empathy for human beings. In fact, unlike the twisted mentality of Gellert Grindelwald and his followers, Newt’s beliefs about the power of Muggles mirrors a certain Albus Dumbledore. Muggles, or No-Majs depending on which side of the pond you preside, aren’t to be looked down upon and, rather progressively, Newt doesn’t subscribe to the notion that non-magical and magical worlds should necessarily be as separatist as they are in America. His friendship with Jacob and the way that he treats him as an equal is a rare thing for a wizard. Instead of seeing their differences and shying away from them, Newt welcomes Jacob into his world without a second thought.  

But while Newt’s heroism in *Fantastic Beasts* stems from his relationships with his creatures, there’s also his delicate and understated approach to saving the day, too. Rather than attempting to thwart and destroy the Obscurus, Newt uses kindness to attempt to help Credence; he knows that the might of magic isn’t necessarily the best course of action. Rather than go in wand raised, Newt uses his humanity to connect with the Obscurial, softly talking Credence down with a genuine wish to protect him. 

In fact, Newt is resistant to any sort of violence, instead opting to use his knowledge and a cauldron’s worth of logic to solve the problems that are at hand. He’s smart enough to figure out that instead of rounding up the entire non-magical population of New York, he can take a natural approach. He not only uses the venom from the Swooping Evil, but also frees Frank the Thunderbird to help the people of New York forget the violence and destruction caused by Graves and the Obscurus.   

In true Hufflepuff style, Newt’s approach to heroism is understated. Unlike the grandeur or bravado of a Gryffindor, he swoops in under the radar, an expert in his field, determined to not only do the right thing but also ensure that there’s minimal collateral damage, too. There’s not a smidge of arrogance or smugness when he saves the day, either. His awkwardness around humans might have something to do with this, but it also doesn’t seem like it’s in his nature. Even though he’s out here saving the world, it doesn’t feel like Newt is ever searching for glory, or even aware that it’s something that his actions could bring about. He doesn’t expect any recognition after he saves New York and uncovers the fact that Graves was secretly Grindelwald all along. Adorably, he even struggles to tell Tina that he’d like to see her again.  

It’s this meekness, as well as his empathetic quality, that Dumbledore clearly sees and why he asks him to become involved in stopping Grindelwald in *Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald*. As he says, ‘Do you know why I admire you, Newt? You do not seek power. You simply ask: is the thing right?’  

Newt, however, is more than just his resolute moral compass. His underdog status makes his heroic nature unexpected. Unlike the traditional heroes, he presents a kind of masculinity that’s not afraid to show weakness or vulnerability. He even lacks the usual sort of charisma exhibited by the great witches and wizards – he’s inept at public speaking and, while competent, isn’t a wizard as celebrated as Dumbledore. He’s not afraid of emotions, either, and while he might struggle to express himself with other human beings, he’s acutely aware of how those around him, both human and animal, are feeling. If they’re struggling, he attempts to make them feel better.  

Newt Scamander subverts everything we’ve come to expect from our heroes. Rather than relying on brute strength and emotional dissonance to save the day, his mixture of sensitivity, intelligence, kindness and his empathetic nature proves that these things aren’t a weakness when it comes to tackling suffering and the darkness the world can throw at you. His honesty and vulnerability will hopefully encourage more people to embrace these qualities, too, as for Newt, that’s where true bravery lives.

Despite having magical abilities, Hogwarts students weren’t immune to growing pains, including figuring out how to navigate friendships and relationships without having (as Nearly Headless Nick so delicately put it) ‘all the sensitivity of a blunt axe’. 

The problem is there’s just something about adolescence that brings out people’s mortifying awkwardness. Even our favourite trio had to try to survive hormones and social learning curves while they were fighting to save the world, which made for some particularly hard moments to sit through. Here are some of the really bad ones that had us cringing to the max – you’ve been warned.

Ron certainly went through one heck of a transformation, but not before insulting what felt like nearly half of Hogwarts. Hermione was no stranger to being at the receiving end of his insensitivity, but there was one incident in their first year that was almost unforgivable.

Hermione, already refusing to speak to Harry and Ron for breaking the rules and almost getting themselves killed (or worse, expelled), grew even more annoyed when she was paired up with Ron in Charms. Ron meanwhile thought Hermione was a bossy know-it-all who probably took delight in criticising his incantation, and it all culminated in Ron making some terribly crass remarks: ‘It’s no wonder no one can stand her,’ and, ‘She’s a nightmare, honestly.’ 

When Harry pointed out that Hermione might have heard him (as if her running past them in tears wasn’t a big enough clue), Ron didn’t own up to the fact that he had gone too far. Instead he added a devastating uppercut punch with, ‘She must’ve noticed she’s got no friends.’

Ouch. (PS: folks, those are great examples of what not to say to your future significant other.)

Ron’s words were so hurtful that Hermione sought sanctuary in the girls’ toilets, which consequently put her in danger from a full-grown mountain troll. It was a good thing Harry and Ron came to the rescue or there would’ve been some major regrets.

Even the best of us will admit we tried avoiding someone at a party. Yeah, we’re not proud of it. But we’re also equally grateful that we didn’t have a Peeves eavesdropping on our conversation. Because as Hermione learned at Nick’s Deathday Party, *Peevesdropping* could make everything go downhill really fast. 

Hermione complained to Harry and Ron about Myrtle’s tantrums and the awful experience of going to the toilet with a ghost wailing at you. (We can’t say we’ve ever been in that exact situation, but we feel you, Hermione.) 

If only she had checked to see if a certain poltergeist was hanging around.

Seeing Hermione try to save the situation was so painful. She lied about what she had said and attempted to compliment Myrtle, then tried to cover up the lie by roping Harry and Ron in too. Peeves pushed the cringe meter to the limit when he called Myrtle ‘spotty’, adding another insult to Myrtle’s already long list. The poor ghost was finally out of the toilets only to be sent away hurt and sobbing again, thanks to Hermione’s faux pas.

If anyone needs notes on how to ruin Valentine’s Day, look no further than Harry and Cho’s trip to Hogsmeade in *Order of the Phoenix*. Everything about their coffee date at Madam Puddifoot’s was a first-date nightmare.

Even their nonverbal communication was painful to see, probably because many of us are (unfortunately) familiar with the awkward silences between conversations. We nearly died laughing when Harry finally went for Cho’s hand, but because Cho had taken her hand off the table, Harry had to grab the sugar bowl instead. Smooth, Harry, smooth.

And then there was the grimace-inducing domino effect of bad decisions. Harry had brought up wanting to meet Hermione, which was a huge no-no. (If you’re wondering what Harry should’ve said instead, brush up on Hermione’s sage advice in the ‘Seen and Unforeseen’ chapter.) So Cho, upset that Harry was thinking of another girl in the middle of their date, tried to make Harry jealous by mentioning that Roger Davies had asked her out. Roger, by the way, did not help the situation by full-on snogging his girlfriend a foot and a half away. 

To make matters worse, Cho tried asking about Cedric, whose death she was still grieving. This started a downward spiral in which Harry tactlessly attempted to avoid the topic and brought up Hermione’s name *again*. Finally, after realising why Cho was upset to begin with, Harry laughed at the worst moment, which was the last straw before Cho stormed out of the teashop in tears and we were left as speechless as everyone else at Madam Puddifoot’s. 

And exhale.

Harry: 0; Social Ineptitude: 1

Other special mentions of cringeworthy moments we will not soon forget (but are trying hard to): Harry and Ron ignoring their dates at the Yule Ball, James Potter publicly humiliating teen Snape, and almost every Lockhart-Harry interaction (the only thing pretty about those was Lockhart’s face). Daniel Radcliffe certainly looks the part of Harry – with one minor exception. His Harry has blue eyes, while the books tell us time and time again of Harry’s green eyes – just like his mother’s. There’s a pretty simple reason for this, though. Radcliffe, who has blue eyes, couldn’t wear green contact lenses, as he was allergic. 

Another detail that a lot of fans wondered about was the placement of the lightning bolt scar. Although the books never specify exactly where on the forehead Harry’s is – we all surely pictured it being in the centre – Daniel Radcliffe’s scar was placed to the side. But don’t worry, this was all J.K. Rowling’s decision, who told director Christopher Columbus to make it ‘razor sharp, just off centre’.

In the books, we don’t learn much about this stoic Auror’s appearance at all. We know he’s tall, black, bald and wears an earring – and the rest is left to our imagination. In the movies, actor George Harris decided to add some African flair to Kingsley’s outfit. 

‘I came down to a fitting,’ Harris said, ‘and I was wearing an Agbada, which is a Nigerian ceremonial gown. Underneath that, I had on a pair of Kota trousers, like Indian pyjamas.’

Costume designer Jany Temime was inspired by Harris’s outfit, and decided to incorporate it into Kingsley’s look. Harris/Shacklebolt was also given a specially made Nigerian-style cap, which reflected light from different angles. 

Harris said that he felt the hat would ‘keep Shacklebolt’s power from escaping. He has a quiet strength and wants to keep a lid on it.’

You’ve got to hand it to Kingsley Shacklebolt. He’s got style.

Before getting her teeth shortened by Madam Pomfrey and discovering Sleekeazy’s Hair Potion, Hermione was known in the earlier Harry Potter books for having bushy hair and big teeth. In the films, Emma Watson’s Hermione has a slightly different spin: her hair is more wavy than bushy, and her teeth are normal-sized – for the most part. Christopher Columbus and Watson did indeed try out fake teeth in the first film, but the director quickly realised this was impractical.

Like the rest of the Malfoys, Draco’s mother Narcissa is described as having blonde hair. She’s also described as looking like she constantly has dung under her nose, but that might just be Harry’s, um, unique interpretation. Nonetheless, in the film, Helen McCrory’s hair was presented in an unusual two-tone style – partly blonde, partly black. 

The idea for this was to give Narcissa a little bit of her sister’s look – Bellatrix Lestrange, played by Helena Bonham Carter, has dark hair.

‘We tried different types of blonde hair, and different configurations, and finally, we came up with this,’ said Lisa Tomblin, hair designer for the Harry Potter films. 

Helen McCrory also thought the hair suited Narcissa, seeing her as a highly fashionable witch who was ‘recognisably chic’.

Well, obviously Tonks is a tricky one, due to her being a Metamorphmagus… Nonetheless, Nymphadora Tonks, as played by Natalia Tena in the films, did have a distinct look that complemented her book counterpart – and she also kept the wild, purple hair. 

Costume designer Jany Temime honoured Tonks’s punky look, and added a few extras for good measure, as if to properly showcase Tonks’s personality. For example, Natalia Tena was given boots to wear to ‘trip her up’ – a homage to Tonks’s clumsiness in the books. But her outfits also reflected her role as a fierce Auror. During the battle at the Department of the Mysteries, for example, she is dressed in a long red coat with military tailoring. ‘She’s ready for battle,’ Tena said of the look, ‘but she still looks cool.’

Which brings us on to our first doppelganger: the Kneazle. According to the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them textbook, Kneazles are cat-like in appearance, but with a little bit more edge than the average feline. They are known for their intellect, their independence, and their savvy ways of spotting when someone is untrustworthy. Also, to add to the confusion, Kneazles can breed with regular cats. Indeed, Crookshanks, is half-Kneazle. All of this makes Kneazles the perfect pet for Mrs Figg, who lives in between the magical world and the Muggle world as a Squib.

Much like Kneazles, Crups could pass for normal, domesticated doggos – if it wasn’t for their forked tails. Apart from that, they look just like Jack Russell terriers. As such, wizards and witches must acquire a license to own a Crup, to show that they can control their pet in Muggle-inhabited areas, and have their tails removed with a painless Severing Charm so Muggles are definitely none the wiser. 

## Mackled Malaclaw 

If partaking in a lovely stroll on a rocky coastline, watch out for the Mackled Malaclaw – a magical creature that looks a bit like a lobster, but far is more sinister. Indeed, if one were to enjoy a Mackled Malaclaw as a decadent seafood dinner option – a green rash is sure to follow. We’ll just have chips, thanks.

Aw, a lovely little hedgehog, a Muggle may foolishly think – when actually they could have just walked into a Knarl, which looks basically the same as the beloved, spiky mammal. The main difference between a Knarl and a hedgehog seems to be general decorum: if a Muggle leaves food out for a Knarl, it’ll mercilessly wreck your garden in gratitude. In the wizarding world, at least Knarl quills are useful for magical purposes – Fred and George have been known to use them for their Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes products. Knarls and hedgehogs are so similar, they are often used in O.W.L. exams at Hogwarts, where students have to try and spot the difference.

To the untrained eye, a Jobberknoll is simply a blue, speckled bird. It could be an exciting moment for a David Attenborough-type to find one, thinking they’ve found a new species... but the game is up quite quickly when a Jobberknoll dies, where it lets out a horrific scream made up of every sound it has ever heard regurgitated backwards. A Muggle would be sure to drop their camera in horror.

Sometimes a quite blatantly fantastical creature has found its way into Muggle folklore – although even then, it’s not quite what they think. Take the Kelpie, a clever shapeshifting water demon that takes many forms in order to lure the unwary into the bottom of whatever lake or river its frequenting. The largest Kelpie takes the form of a large sea serpent that dwells in Loch Ness, Scotland – so you can only imagine what the Muggles managed to piece together, there... 

It would explain a lot about why the fabled Loch Ness Monster only appears on very sporadic occasions – as the cheeky Kelpie can simply turn into an otter if Muggles approach.

In the wizarding world, every image is magically alive in its own way, from Harry trying to escape a photograph with Professor Lockhart on the front of the *Daily Prophet*, to Albus Dumbledore still delivering his sage advice through his portrait even after his death. But how ‘alive’ are the subjects of these pictures? Let’s investigate.

## The images are brought to life with enchantments and potions

Whether a photo or a painting, wizards and witches are able to magically enchant the images to bring them to life. Even Colin Creevey, with his Muggle camera, is able to magically enhance his many, many photos – as long as he develops them in ‘the right potion.’

From some of the situations we’ve seen, it looks like taking a still photo is more like capturing a video, such as the example of Harry trying to escape his own photo with Gilderoy Lockhart, putting up just as good a fight as the real Harry did. 

## The more dedicated the witch or wizard, the more accurate the portrait

It is tradition for witches and wizards of note to sit for portraits, so their legacy can be retained long after they’ve passed, hence why Hogwarts is covered in the frames of countless figures from wizarding history. But while each painting has its own unique personality true to their sitters’ real lives, some are more textured than others. While Sir Cadogan will jovially challenge anyone to a duel who walks past him, true to his days as a knight, others, such as Albus Dumbledore’s portrait, seems to emulate the sage headmaster’s famous intelligence perfectly. 

According to J.K. Rowling, the more powerful you are, the more ‘real’ your portrait can be, and if you sit down with your portrait and spend more time with it, the more accurate a portrayal of yourself it will hold. This is why Albus Dumbledore’s portrait is so lifelike, while his Chocolate Frog card, which also holds his image, is more of a fleeting snapshot – which is still sentient in a smaller way.

## Hence why Dumbledore’s portrait feels so real

In *Cursed Child*, Dumbledore’s portrait is able to serve true emotion when talking with Harry, and is even self-aware of the fact he is just a portrait, poetically dubbing himself, ‘paint and memory’. Despite this, Harry and Dumbledore’s portrait are able to have a frank discussion just as deep as they used to during Harry’s youth, with Dumbledore even admitting to Harry he loved him. In the play, McGonagall briskly tells Harry that the portrait is still just ‘a memoir’, but it seems pretty convincing to us. You’d never get that sort of heart-to-heart with the Fat Lady.

## But portraits and ghosts are still quite different

While a portrait is a perfect shadow of their sitter, a ghost is more like an imprint – which carries their unfinished business into the afterlife. While portraits tend to advise and watch over the living world, ghosts can be a bit more pro-active, and can be shaped by new experiences. Nearly Headless Nick could still be hurt by the Basilisk, but as Harry astutely observed, ‘he couldn’t die again’. 

While paintings can certainly remember things and reiterate catchphrases of their former selves, they are more like an ‘aura’ – while ghosts are far more... fleshed out, if you’ll excuse the pun.

Rowling said of the difference: ‘If Harry had a portrait of his parents it would not help him a great deal. If he could meet them as ghosts, that would be a much more meaningful interaction...’

## Although paintings still fear for their ‘lives’

While ghosts choose to live in an in-between state forever, portraits still live in the fear of being destroyed. The closest we get to seeing this happen is when a terrified Fat Lady is attacked in *Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban*, and has to move frames to keep safe, as her canvas has been torn. We must assume from the Fat Lady’s fear that if a painting is gone their encapsulated form leaves too.


## So... nobody’s painted a portrait of Voldemort, have they?

Not that we’ve spotted, thank Merlin. Voldemort was far too invested in splitting his soul into Horcruxes rather than indulging in small talk with a painting. For the best. We’ve seen the damage Walburga Black’s portrait still brings to the world...
