## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

She was told she was too young, she was told to stay safe, but Ginny Weasley was not to be underestimated. Always overprotected due to her age throughout all the Potter books, Ginny grew up to be ferociously stubborn, clever, funny, and an accomplished witch, despite how much her mum tried to keep her away from the darker side of the wizarding world.

In the Battle of Hogwarts, Ginny was still underage, so required to stay out of the conflict. Of course, this didn’t stop her, and she snuck back into the main throng of the fight not before long. While Ginny fought valiantly, she also showed compassion for a crying Hogwarts student, as Harry witnessed under his Invisibility Cloak. Because, of course, kindness for those in distress is just as vital as the battle at hand.

Molly had arguably one of the most famous moments of the entire battle of Hogwarts, showing a merciless edge when she saw her children in danger. With a cry of ‘NOT MY DAUGHTER, YOU BITCH!’, she slaughtered the witch who had brought so many hardships to not just her family, but the whole wizarding world: Bellatrix Lestrange. 

Seeing Molly in battle was a side to her we’d never quite seen before – and showed that being the matriarch of a huge family isn’t just about being a whizz in the kitchen, making sure everyone’s doing well in their studies and keeping the house in order – but protecting her family at whatever cost.

One of the more commanding members of the Order of the Phoenix had an important part to play in the battle – and it’s not surprising he was appointed Minister of Magic not soon after the events of Voldemort’s downfall. Kingsley was instrumental in helping to organise the school’s battle plan and was seen duelling valiantly once the fight began.

Along with other loyal members of Dumbledore’s Army, Luna was vital during the Battle of Hogwarts – even leading Harry to one of the final Horcruxes he needed to destroy. Luna’s part to play in the battle required brains beyond brawn, such as helping Harry enter the Ravenclaw common room – and then helping him achieve some much-needed peace and quiet once the battle was won. Although Luna was still very active in the battle itself (such as producing her silver hare Patronus to thwart the Dementors), it was her calmer, quieter moments that were vital to Harry’s success. 

## Professor Flitwick

Who knew Professor Flitwick, so pleasant and so kindly, could be so ruthless and so tactical in the face of combat? First of all, he took down Snape with a smart charm on a suit of armour, then he performed complex incantations through a smashed window, then got into the heart of the battle, facing off Death Eaters such as Dolohov and Yaxley successfully. Flitwick combined his tremendous intellect with his immense level of expertise in his field to succeed in the battle – the mark of a Ravenclaw through and through.

Slughorn’s involvement in the Battle of Hogwarts was perhaps more significant, as it concluded his path of redemption. After all, our journey with Slughorn was a tricky one – this is the man that favoured famous witches and wizards over others, the man who seemed to only help out when he had an ulterior motive, the man who told Tom Riddle what a Horcrux was. Slughorn’s help on the battlefield (where he joined the other professors in the many duels against the Death Eaters) and representing Slytherin house in place of Snape showed that the Potions professor had heart – even if it took him a while to properly come through.

The man who welcomed Harry into the wizarding world had to be there at the very end – when all hope looked lost – and he was. Hagrid’s appearance at Hogwarts surprised Harry, after the half-giant had been hiding in a nearby cave avoiding arrest for hosting a ‘Support Harry Potter party’, but of course, Hagrid was never going to miss the Battle of Hogwarts. 

Inevitably, Hagrid had a part to play in the physical side of the fight but was perhaps most significant for his anguish carrying Harry’s ‘body’ after his face-off with Voldemort seemed to end in tragedy. Of course, it didn’t, but Hagrid’s fierce love for Harry never felt more raw than right here. 

## Professor Sprout

Much like Flitwick, Professor Sprout applied her specialist subject skills to great results during the battle, choosing to take on Lord Voldemort with Mandrakes and exploding Snargaluff pods. Sprout’s unorthodox approach worked a treat – and the boisterous Herbology professor provided a wall of strength along with the other Heads of House.

Neville’s inspirational story came to a stunning climax during the Battle of Hogwarts – with Harry returning to the school to find the formerly timid student a battle-worn hero, who’d kept Dumbledore’s Army afloat during his absence. Neville even got one of the most important parts in the entire battle, finishing off Nagini, perhaps Voldemort’s most beloved Horcrux – and rejecting Voldemort’s offer to join his army in a thrilling face-off. How far he had come, from standing up to Harry, Ron and Hermione in *Philosopher’s Stone*, to standing up to the most powerful Dark wizard of the wizarding world.

Without Professor McGonagall, would Hogwarts have stood so strong against Lord Voldemort? With Snape disgraced, it was up to the deputy headmistress to stand strong in the face of devastating peril, get the castle ready for impending attack, and be magnificent throughout. McGonagall’s strength was evident from the very first time we met her. But in times of trouble, she rose to the top. Despite a year of misery at Hogwarts, despite losing Dumbledore, despite blaming herself for Snape’s apparent betrayal, despite having a school full of terrified students to take care of, truly nothing phased McGonagall – and Hogwarts was safe under her wing.

Right from the beginning of the Harry Potter stories, even when Harry was just a baby, Hagrid was there. Indeed, in the very first chapter of *Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone*, Hagrid was one of the first magical characters we were introduced to, alongside Professor McGonagall and Professor Dumbledore on that fateful night where Voldemort fell, Harry was left an orphan, and the Muggle world was none the wiser. 

Arriving on Sirius Black’s motorbike with a fast-asleep baby Harry in his arms, Hagrid’s impact on us was immediate straight from the off. A half-giant with a heart of gold wailing in despair that Harry Potter’s parents had been killed, and now Harry had to live with a Muggle family who hated magic, away from all the people who truly loved him.

J.K. Rowling once notably said in an interview that [she never planned to kill off Hagrid](/features/pleasing-harry-potter-facts-that-might-cheer-you-up), due to having a strong image of Hagrid carrying Harry at the end of *Deathly Hallows*, mirroring the moment he did the same for Harry as a baby. As such, Hagrid has always been there for Harry – hence why we have picked the following chapter to celebrate him.

## ‘The Keeper of the Keys’

> The giant squeezed his way into the hut, stooping so that his head just brushed the ceiling. He bent down, picked up the door and fitted it easily back into its frame. The noise of the storm out- side dropped a little. He turned to look at them all.

A strange, otherworldly giant man aggressively breaking into a tiny hut, terrifying the entire room, and then casually asking for a cup of tea. Truly, this moment is Hagrid all over; a man who is seemingly quite intimidating on the outside, but compassionate and lovely the second you get to know him. It was the perfect introduction – except of course, Harry had no idea he’d already met Hagrid, albeit as a baby. The only memory Harry really had of Hagrid was an abstract one; [a strange dream he had of a flying motorbike... ](/features/the-significance-of-harrys-weirdest-dreams)

Hagrid’s appearance really was the apex of a strange couple of days for Harry and the Dursleys, who had been trying to escape an endless slew of letters inviting Harry to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry – not to mention the fact it was Harry’s birthday. Hagrid’s fury at the Dursleys for not telling Harry anything about the wizarding world was both terrifying and amazing; Hagrid cared so deeply for Harry’s well-being, his tenderness was fearsome. 

And what’s more? Hagrid even brought Harry a birthday cake and sausages! Harry was baffled – but also hungry. Again, how perfectly fitting that Harry’s first proper introduction to magic should be witnessing a half-giant using a magic umbrella to heat up some sausages. 

And then, after all that, Hagrid uttered the words we would never forget in true Hagrid fashion.

Hagrid has had many golden moments over the Harry Potter films and books, obviously. His giant pumpkins, the Care of Magical Creatures lessons, the absolute knees-up he had with Harry and Slughorn at Aragog’s funeral. And through it all, Hagrid was always just around for a huge hug at the end of a particularly gruelling time. Whether it be offering Ron a bucket for vomiting slugs, or flying Harry to safety from a swarm of Death Eaters, he would never falter in terms of taking care of his friends. 

So endlessly loyal to Hogwarts, Dumbledore and Harry, Hagrid always led with kindness despite having suffered so many hardships himself. A spell in Azkaban, expulsion from Hogwarts, a damning news article from Rita Skeeter, having to let go of the dangerous creatures he so dearly loves on several occasions... when you weigh everything up, Hagrid had been through the ringer. But despite it all, Hagrid’s strength in times of darkness was crucial, especially as a torch of inspiration for Harry. 

Hence why we have picked such an early chapter in Harry’s story to hero Hagrid. We can think of no better person to tell Harry that he was a wizard, the truth about his parents, the whole thing. And at the end, when Hagrid thought Harry was dead, and carried him through Hogwarts the same way he carried Harry has an infant, the story had come full circle. 

And 19 years later, Hagrid was still around for Harry’s family, inviting Albus over for tea on his very first week of Hogwarts. Over generations, Hagrid will always be there.

For several characters in the series, the Boy Who Lived ended up also being the boy who lived with them. Sharing a space with Harry was a reality they had to face and continually adapt to. But was it worth it?

Breathing the same air as one of the most talked-about wizards sounded like a dream, depending on who you asked (cough, not the [Dursleys](/collection/the-dursley), cough). But he also wasn’t the easiest person to live with, although admittedly this was often for reasons beyond his control. Then again, who could say no to Harry Potter?

Like with all tough decisions, we thought a pros and cons breakdown should settle the matter.

While the Dursleys wanted nothing to do with the magical community, they had to admit that living with Harry Potter was a blessing in some ways. For Dudley, especially, Harry’s presence meant he could lead a life of luxury. Harry was the considerate housemate who not only did his own chores but was forced to do his cousin’s, too. Handy! Plus, just the sight of Harry made Mr and Mrs Dursley fawn over their precious and perfect Ickle Dudleykins. And let’s not forget: Harry saved Dudley’s life. That alone should far outweigh all other reasons.

When it came to Harry and the boys in the [Gryffindor](/collection/characters-gryffindors) dormitory, the benefits of sharing the same circular room with Harry ran deep.

Sure, living with a celebrity like Harry meant automatic ‘popular’ points (well, most of the time – you know, when he wasn’t being accused of opening the Chamber of Secrets). Who wouldn’t want to be in the in-crowd of the Boy Who Lived, the captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team, the unexpected Triwizard champion and the leader of [Dumbledore’s Army](/collection/dumbledores-army)?

But as Ron, Neville, Dean and Seamus learned, Harry didn’t want all the attention. He just wanted to be Harry, which gave the five of them room to grow and form a life-changing brotherhood – a brotherhood that inspired them to become some of the bravest students in Hogwarts.

With Harry, they could bond over Quidditch, spear marshmallows by the fire and gab about flying a car into the Whomping Willow (even after suffering through Hermione’s and Percy’s scowls).

The boys also realised that Harry was someone you could count on. But living with Harry also came with a whole host of issues – and we’re not talking about the Muggle housemate problems we’re familiar with, such as dirty dishes left in the sink or empty milk cartons being put back in the fridge instead of the bin. Sure, the Gryffindor boys had to deal with the nasty and awkward spats that Harry had with Ron or Seamus, but those were matters most friends learn to work out.

The real problem was the threat that living with Harry posed. Imagine strangers showing up unexpectedly, or people breaking in and ransacking the quarters… Nothing would feel safe. As gentle as Hagrid was, we could understand why Uncle Vernon had his rifle at the ready when a half-giant was busting down the door. And, back when everyone thought [Sirius Black](/feature/things-you-may-not-have-noticed-about-sirius-black) was a mass murderer, remember when he slashed Ron’s curtains and stood over him in the middle of the night? Horrifying! We’re surprised the Gryffindor boys didn’t ask to be relocated.

Apparently, the boys had also become so used to the possibility of danger (or Harry’s horrific nightmares) that none of them were remotely shocked about Harry’s early-morning scream years later.

Harry breaking out of places was also a constant issue, and we’re not just talking about the time the Weasleys helped him escape from the Dursleys in a flying car (at least that one was quite funny… for everyone but the Dursleys). Having an Invisibility Cloak meant Harry, Ron and Hermione could slip away at Hogwarts when they thought they needed to, but it also meant Gryffindor could get into trouble. Trying to stop the trio, though, could end up with someone being put in a Full Body-Bind, as Neville discovered the hard way.

If we asked the Dursleys, they would probably list a million reasons not to live with Harry Potter. Even just looking at the times Petunia and Vernon had guests over, things tended to go wrong because of Harry’s presence. Petunia’s masterpiece of a pudding ended up on every surface of the house, Mrs Mason was frightened away by an owl, and Aunt Marge blew up like a balloon. 

But no matter where we land on this discussion, we can all agree that living with Harry would be an unforgettable experience, for better or for worse – and hey, it beats living in a cupboard under the stairs.

It’s been tremendously difficult, but here’s our ranking of the Hogwarts professors based on which classrooms we’d most like to sneak into. And note, we’ve only counted professors we’ve actually seen in action in the books and films – so no Professor Kettleburns or Armando Dippets, but we have counted Albus Dumbledore as we saw him teaching in *Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald*. 

And one last quick note – we’ve not included Defence Against the Dark Arts professors in this list because... there were an awful lot of them, so many, that they get their own list [here](/features/ranked-the-defence-against-the-dark-arts-teachers).

Well, yeah. The cruel Death Eater sibling was hardly going to rank highly here. We never properly saw the Carrows teach, after they were installed in Hogwarts during Lord Voldemort’s ascent in *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows*, but we heard awful stories from Neville about their ‘teaching style’. While one taught Defence Against the Dark Arts (hence why they’re not mentioned here), the other taught Muggle Studies of all things, which was used as an excuse to torture the students. Thank Merlin Voldemort was thwarted before their reign could last much longer.

## Professor Binns 

Oh, poor Professor Binns, a teacher so immersed in his subject, History of Magic, that he still pursued his teachings even after he died. No offence to Professor Binns, who seemed relatively harmless, and definitely knows his stuff, but the fact that Harry and his fellow classmates often used the lesson as an excuse for a little nap says it all, really.

As ever, analysing Snape in any sort of way is complicated. On the one hand, there’s no mistaking Snape’s exceptional skills in Potions and his fascination with the subject. His grandiose speech about ‘brewing glory’ and ‘stoppering death’ showed just how in tune with Potions he really was. But from bullying students to threatening toads to docking house points for arbitrary reasons, there’s no excuse for such behaviour. Snape was also known to use his lessons to settle personal grudges, such as when he took over Defence Against the Dark Arts to subtly try and hint to the class that his childhood rival, Professor Lupin, was a werewolf.

Another Potions professor with ulterior motives – next up is Professor Slughorn. Slughorn is another tricky teacher to figure out – his love of potions and knowledge were obvious, and his Felix Felicis class was genuinely fascinating. But his constant favouring of famous or gifted students wasn’t setting a good example – and sometimes he seemed more interested in his Slug Club parties than anything else. After all, this is the man that taught a young Tom Riddle about Horcruxes, just to seem impressive in class...  

## Professor Trelawney

Of course, Divination is not a subject for everyone, and Trelawney’s placement in this list really depends on whether you appreciate her craft – or just think it’s ‘woolly’ like Hermione did. Trelawney herself was a pretty tactless teacher at times too, regularly upsetting class members, such as predicting Harry’s untimely demise, and even taking out her Seer ‘abilities’ on Lavender Brown’s poor pet rabbit, Binky. There was also the issue that her skills of going ‘into the beyond’ were quite unpredictable at times, and even Professor Dumbledore was unsure of her.

Firenze the centaur took over Divination after Sybil Trelawney lost her post during Umbridge’s tenure – with the Divination classroom being transformed into a forest-type setting to make Firenze feel more at home. We didn’t see much of Firenze’s teaching style, but it looked like it involved a lot of lying down and gazing at the stars, which is fine by us. 

## Hagrid

Hagrid’s new assignment as Care of Magical Creatures professor was, of course, a joyous thing – and Harry and co. were thrilled for him to be taking on a job where he got to celebrate his love of fantastic beasts. Now, as much as we love Hagrid, some of the gamekeeper’s taste in beasts for a school curriculum was less than fantastic, often exposing his rather young students to ridiculously dangerous animals, such as the Blast-Ended Skrewts, and setting the class a book that attacks them... and also, all those Flobberworms, Hagrid! 

## Professor Grubbly-Plank

Sorry, Hagrid... if only there had been less Flobberworms. Professor Grubbly-Plank was Hagrid’s no-nonsense substitute teacher, who popped in every time Hagrid was indisposed. Annoyingly, Grubbly-Plank did present very fascinating magical creatures, such as introducing the students to Bowtruckles and Unicorns. Hagrid may have had far more heart, but professionally-speaking, Grubbly-Plank just tips it.

Wonderfully dishevelled Professor Sprout is a Hogwarts staple for a reason, and pretty much everything we could want from a Hogwarts professor. She had heart, warmth, but a strictness when needed, and a genuine love of nurturing nature. Her expertise in all sorts of amazing magical flora and fungi made her lessons progressively more remarkable as the years went along, especially when we got to the more dangerous plants in Greenhouse Three. All this, and her sterling turnout at the Battle of Hogwarts (where she came armed with exploding Snargaluff Pods) showed that you don’t need a wand to explore the phenomenon of magic – sometimes just look at the soil beneath you.
