## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

Aunt Marge was as if Uncle Vernon needed to get all of his vitriol towards Harry out in one short evening. Vernon’s sister was rude, unnecessarily cruel, and downright unpleasant. We will never say that anyone deserves to be blown up by their nephew, but this could be the one exception. After all, not even Vernon or Petunia had their dog chase Harry up a tree.

Probably the two Muggles we know the best in the series, and nothing good came of it. The Dursleys of number four, Privet Drive (‘perfectly normal, thank you very much’), were stuck in their ways, neglectful and ignorant, and we’re only sorry that poor old Harry had to live with them for as long as he did. While Vernon always seemed ruthlessly stubborn about his views on magic, Petunia’s struggles with her witch sister Lily seemed a little more complex. We even learnt that she wrote to Albus Dumbledore asking if she could go to Hogwarts too, when Lily got her letter as a child. We soon discovered that there was a bit more of a reason for Petunia’s resentfulness towards Harry than met the eye.

When all was said and done, however, the Dursleys were still categorically awful. They did have a nice garden though. Beautiful hydrangeas.

Rich, handsome and privileged, Tom Riddle Sr may not have deserved to be magically bewitched by Merope Gaunt, but he didn’t exactly seem like a nice bloke, either.

Not only did he parent one of the most evil wizards known to wizardkind (by the way, thanks a lot, Tom), he was like a contemptuous, self-righteous young man who treated the Gaunt family with nothing but open hostility and disdain (before being placed under a probable love potion by Merope, of course). Then, when the potion was lifted, he felt no sense of duty whatsoever to help her out. Of course, this is a very ambiguous area since she had bewitched him to be with her, but if he had just found her a safe place to stay, it could have saved her life.

## Cecilia 

Cecilia was Tom Riddle Sr’s girlfriend before Merope got that cauldron full of hot, strong love brewing, and was just as unpleasant as he was regarding clearing the old Gaunt land. Perhaps she even deserved having her boyfriend ensnared in a love potion and driven away (okay, she definitely didn’t, but you could have been nicer, Cecilia)! 

## Mr and Mrs Mason 

All Mr and Mrs Mason really did was go around to an employee’s house for some dinner, and they probably didn’t deserve desserts being dropped on their heads by a misguidedly helpful house-elf. But spending the evening at the Dursleys’ probably meant that Mr and Mrs Mason liked them, and that says everything you need to know about them.

This was the pair who reported that they had seen a flying Ford Anglia making its way towards a certain wizarding school. Honestly, Hetty and Angus, couldn’t you have just put it down to the weather, or your eyes playing tricks on you? You got our heroes into so much trouble! 

## The punters at The Hanged Man

After the Riddle family were murdered, naturally the village got together at the local pub and decided that Frank Bryce was the man behind the crimes. The cook, landlord, a woman called Dot and a few other unnamed Muggles determined that he was the only man who could have done the deed. In fact, only one woman defended him, saying he had suffered a ‘hard war’. Thank you, kind Muggle lady. You deserve to be higher on this list. Dot, you stay where you are! 

## Guard at King’s Cross

Honestly, how many young witches and wizards had probably asked this guard about Hogwarts at that station? How many people must the guard have spotted wandering through with owls and broomsticks? And yet he still called Harry a time-waster after he asked him about the eleven o’clock train. Come on man, work it out already! 

## Dudley Dursley

He would have had a considerably worse spot on this list should it have been written before *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows*, but Dudley’s encounter with Dementors made him progress from a cruel bully to a concerned cousin. Of course, Dudley and Harry would never be best friends, but their redemptive handshake was quite a significant character progression for Dudders.

## The Prime Minister

Although the Prime Minister believed that the wizarding world was real, he really didn’t want anything to do with it. Instead, he was shoehorned into dealing with Cornelius Fudge and Rufus Scrimgeour, sort of how the Dursleys furiously accepted taking care of Harry as a baby. Although the Prime Minister was surely a very decent person, we think it’s fair to say that he buried his head in the sand about the wizarding world, and if he had it his way, he wouldn’t have wanted to know anything at all.

> For a time he had tried to convince himself that Fudge had indeed been a hallucination brought on by lack of sleep during his gruelling election campaign. Pity poor Mr Roberts, the campsite owner at the Quidditch World Cup, who must have had a very confusing summer when suddenly hundreds, if not thousands, of randomly dressed people who all seem to know each other showed up. The chap had to be constantly Obliviated thanks to his suspicions about his new guests, and probably came out of the whole thing pretty dazed. The poor guy was just trying to do his job.

## Mrs Cole 

Mrs Cole ran the orphanage where Tom Riddle Jr grew up, and despite being deeply unnerved by Tom and his actions regarding the other children, she was readily suspicious of Dumbledore’s intentions before he used magic to convince her otherwise. She also liked a gin. Quite the lady, in our opinion! 

> There was no doubt that Mrs Cole was an inconveniently sharp woman. Apparently Dumbledore thought so too, for Harry now saw him slip his wand out of the pocket of his velvet suit, at the same time picking up a piece of perfectly blank paper from Mrs Cole’s desktop.

## Mr and Mrs Granger

It was a shame that we didn’t see more of the Granger parents. But from the glimpses we do get, we know that they were polite, kind, hardworking dentists who were very supportive of Hermione’s magical talents and seemed quite happy to get stuck into the wizarding world. Even when Arthur Weasley freaked out about their mere existence, they seemed to react to the situation with the same poise we know and love within Hermione.

Frank, if you were a wizard, you would have been in Gryffindor. After fighting in the war, Frank just wanted a quiet life of gardening and solitude. It seemed hardly fair that he was accused of murdering the Riddle family, and even less so that he himself was murdered by the man who originally did the job – Voldemort. However, Frank stood his ground despite being clueless about magic, and his echo even helped Harry to fight Voldemort following his resurrection.

Of course, most of the Hogwarts staff we encountered in the books seemed like completely glorious company – Filch, Sprout, Dumbledore? We’d love to sit down and have a Butterbeer with them sometime. However, during his time at Hogwarts, Harry Potter encountered more than a few staff members who were grumpy, mean, short-tempered, or who otherwise had a chip on their shoulders. From Harry’s point of view there was no need for it, but when you really think about it, you can sort of relate to how those sourpusses were feeling.

There’s no denying that Argus Filch could take things too far sometimes. We’re not, for example, going to defend his desire to bring back corporal punishment. His general bad mood, though, was much easier to understand, because a) Filch was apparently the only caretaker for an entire castle, and b) the castle was a school for magical students. It would have been hard enough cleaning up after normal teenagers, but these ones had access to Dungbombs.

Don’t forget that Filch was a Squib, too, so not only did he have to watch the students delightedly learning spells, but he was unable to use magic to clean up any of the mess they made. Fred and George once turned a corridor into a swamp and Filch had to ferry students over it between lessons. He really did have to put up with a lot.

As the nurse for Hogwarts, Madam Pomfrey had to heal all the things that pass for ‘normal’ maladies in the wizarding world, like students trying to curse acne off their faces or having to administer Calming Draughts in exam season. From the day Harry arrived, though, things escalated: there were bones that needed regrowing, Hippogriff attacks, and in the second year the Petrified victims of a Basilisk took up almost every bed in her ward. She was probably in a state of perpetual exasperation, so it’s no wonder she could be brusque with her patients sometimes. She said it herself:

Even in a normal library there are certain rules you have to obey. Most librarians would be peeved at students being loud, writing on books or dog-earing pages, and Madam Pince was no different. The Hogwarts library was a communal resource, after all. We’d probably get as frustrated as Madam Pince did at the way some students treated it. 

Madam Pince wasn’t just protecting the books, either. Some of them were extremely dangerous, so she was protecting the students just as much. That was the whole reason the Restricted Section existed, after all – although calling it the Restricted Section probably wasn’t the best way to stop students wanting to go in there and flip through a few volumes. All the more frustrating if you’re a long-suffering librarian just trying to keep everyone involved safe.

## Professor McGonagall

Professor McGonagall was probably the strictest Head of House, at least when it came to her own students, often proving that she had no qualms about docking points from Gryffindors. Though she wasn’t averse to bending the rules, like getting Harry onto the Gryffindor Quidditch team before he was officially old enough to play, McGonagall had a ‘steely glint’ in her eyes. At times, it seemed that Harry was more afraid of her cold, controlled fury than he was of Voldemort, especially when he had done something extremely silly or dangerous, like the unforgettable time he took a flying car to school instead of the Hogwarts Express. 

But McGonagall was under a lot of pressure, especially leading up to and during Voldemort’s return. The students under her care were put in increasing danger, and after Dumbledore’s escape in Harry’s fifth year at Hogwarts, McGonagall and the other teachers had to deal with Professor Umbridge, too. It’s a wonder she was ever in a good mood at all.

Professor Snape was, as we know, a very conflicted man – and it’s awful that he was never formally called out for his bullying nature in Potions classes. He seemed to be specifically horrible to Harry from his first day at school, which we soon learned was born out of a mix of having been bullied by Harry’s father James (and Harry looked very much like James), and still mourning Harry’s mother Lily. Snape’s many repressed feelings had clearly manifested into an ugly and cruel teaching style. As such, Harry, Ron and Hermione’s dislike of Professor Snape was cemented in their first year, and they even believed that Snape was trying to kill Harry, but of course that turned out to be an unfortunate case of very crossed wires. In their second year they thought Snape was somehow helping to open the Chamber of Secrets, but again, it wasn’t true.

Eventually, of course, we all found out that Snape was a double agent for the Order of the Phoenix, and was spying on Voldemort at the height of his power. Snape’s life was in constant danger, and he’d lost the only woman he loved years before. 

It’s quite possible that Snape was never happy from the time he joined Hogwarts as a pupil until the day he died, hence all the callous deducting of house points, threatening Neville’s pet toad, and calling Hermione an ‘insufferable know-it-all’. It’s not something we can forgive Snape for, but at least we know why he was the way he was.

Located in the charming area of Ottery St Catchpole – both a Muggle and magical community, but don’t worry, spells are in place! – is this an, erm, quirky property known as The Burrow. Charmingly held together by magic (how retro!), it has the appearance of several rooms piled up on top of one another.

Charming! Outside is a fully-functioning yard, with a spacious garage for all your needs. Not to mention a garden big enough to practice Quidditch in! It even comes with many charming garden gnomes, who are just charming. Inside, The Burrow is as cosy as its name suggests, featuring a family-friendly kitchen, a comfy living room and as many bedrooms as you’re willing to conjure. Charming!

A short journey down the road from The Burrow and you’ll soon encounter every wizarding chess fan’s dream – a house that looks just like a giant rook!

Known as the Lovegood House, this charming property is surrounded by all kinds of strange and exotic plants, including the charmingly charming Snargaluff, which is only slightly dangerous! Step inside, however, and you will be treated to a truly striking layout: a front door that opens into a perfectly circular kitchen, adorned with brightly painted stoves, sinks and cupboards – all curved to fit the walls – and a staircase that leads to the upper levels, which include a living room and bedrooms. It’s the perfect property for any magical, erm, eccentrics.

If you’re an animal lover, it can be tough finding a place suitable for a pet. Thankfully, Newt Scamander’s home has been, er, personalised to accommodate a number of hairy, scaly or feathery friends.

This Victorian-style house boasts a lot of space and high ceilings, including an actual giant ocean, in case you’re planning on having any Kelpies visiting.

This... charming house is located in an affable area of London. Hidden from Muggles by the Fidelius Charm, it is a house of history: having once belonged to one of the wizarding world’s most prestigious families, the Blacks, and having most recently functioned as the headquarters of the famous resistance group, the Order of the Phoenix. Just think of the dinner party conversations!

As for the house itself, it does admittedly need a bit of work; its wallpaper is peeling, it’s typically dusty and the carpets are... an opportunity to make your own. But fans of Victorian gothic are in for a real treat. Not to mention that this is a spacious property with three floors including a marvellous dining room, kitchen and a pantry. It also happens feature a... charming portrait of historical figure Walburga Black, who is always open to fascinating conversation. Trust us, you'll never want to get rid of her! (Please don't try to get rid of her.)

Now this is more like it. This huge and handsome manor house is the ultimate statement of wizarding wealth. Located in Wiltshire, the house is surrounded by immense grounds featuring elaborate gardens, a fountain and the finest albino peacocks.

Enter the grounds through a pair of wrought-iron gates (the finest in wizarding security!), make your way up an impressive driveway and you will eventually be met by the house itself. There are many, many rooms, of course, but the most impressive is the drawing room: the ceiling is high, and features two chandeliers. The room itself comes with a pipe organ, a marble mantelpiece and a truly stunning centrepiece: a long ornate table that’s ideal for entertaining guests.

And let’s not forget that the manor comes with its own cellar – spacious and perfect for holding your enemies prisoner against their will!

The saying goes that some are born great, some achieve greatness and that others have greatness thrust upon them. In the case of [Harry Potter](/features/harry-potter) and [Newt Scamander](/features/newt-scamander), all three have some truth in them. 

## Marked from birth 

Harry was marked for fame from birth: literally. When he was left at the home of the Dursleys at [number four Privet Drive](/features/number-four-privet-drive) by Dumbledore, McGonagall and Hagrid, the infant Harry’s lightning-shaped scar was still fresh on his forehead. Even then, McGonagall knew he was destined for greatness.

> ‘He’ll be famous – a legend – I wouldn’t be surprised if today was known as Harry Potter Day in future – there will be books written about Harry – every child in our world will know his name!’

But Harry certainly had fame thrust upon him. The death of his parents weighed heavily on him throughout the stories, and it didn’t help when people like [Gilderoy Lockhart](/features/gilderoy-lockhart) tried to capitalise on it for superficial reasons. When Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge started to manipulate Harry’s celebrity to his own political ends in the press, Harry was full of a righteous fury which propelled him throughout much of *Order of the Phoenix*:

> ‘I didn’t ask – I didn’t want – Voldemort killed my parents!’ Harry spluttered. ‘I got famous because he murdered my family but couldn’t kill me! Who wants to be famous for that? Don’t they think I’d rather it’d never –’

## Don't believe what you read

Few people pushed Harry’s buttons as hard as Daily Prophet ‘journalist’ and gossip-monger Rita Skeeter. Before the [Triwizard Tournament](/feature/triwizard-tournament-timeline) in *Goblet of Fire*, she dug up the trauma of his past to press him about whether that’s why he had entered himself into the tournament. But before she could finish the question, Harry jumped in to remind her that he didn’t enter the tournament: he had been entered without his knowledge.

It’s a constant throughout the books that Harry feels beholden to fate, a kind of unwitting pawn in a broader scheme. His reluctance to accept his own agency in events is, of course, overturned by his actions on several occasions, and – ultimately – during the final battle with Voldemort.

Newt Scamander also fell foul of Rita’s Quick-Quotes Quill, as he noted in the foreword of the most recent edition of his Hogwarts Library book *Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them*. Skeeter had written a scurrilous biography of Newt called Man or Monster? The TRUTH About Newt Scamander. He used the foreword to debunk any idea that he was a Dumbledore spy sent to infiltrate the Magical Congress of the United States of America in 1926. Clearly frustrated, he remonstrated that it would ‘take months to contradict every wild assertion in Miss Skeeter’s book’.
