## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

The Harry Potter films are renowned for just how many huge British stars are in the cast. Due to the ‘only British’ rule that the vast majority of the actors in the films should be from the UK, the cream of British talent were recruited for the eight films – a lot of them award-winning stars, many of them knights and dames, at the top of their game.

In fact, there are simply too many to name, but let’s look at a few, and their lives before and after Harry Potter.

## Alan Rickman

It is very hard to imagine Potions master Severus Snape being played by anyone other than Alan Rickman – an actor who managed to nail Snape’s multi-faceted character; the sardonic, the cruel, the troubled, the conflicted. J.K. Rowling famously told Rickman secret information about his character before we learnt ‘the truth’ about Snape ourselves in the final instalment of the stories – and has praised him for doing ‘justice’ to one of her most complex characters.

Rickman’s career spanned numerous iconic roles well before Snape, such as his iconic villain Hans Gruber in the action classic *Die Hard*, his BAFTA-winning Sheriff of Nottingham in *Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves*, Colonel Brandon in *Sense and Sensibility*, and Alexander Dane in sci-fi cult classic, *Galaxy Quest* – to name a few. Rickman was especially lauded for applying his famously dry sense of humour to many of his performances, as well as his instantly recognisable voice: two factors that he fused perfectly for playing Severus Snape.

Rickman’s career went from strength to strength during and after the Harry Potter films, such as memorable turns in *Love Actually* and *The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy*, and his later work with director Tim Burton, including *Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street* and *Alice in Wonderland* – both of which starred many more of our Wizarding World family.

It’s hard to sum up how special Alan Rickman’s performance in Harry Potter truly was – but his frequent collaborator and fellow Harry Potter star Emma Thompson does it wonderfully here:

‘What I remember most in this moment of painful leave-taking is his humour, intelligence, wisdom and kindness. His capacity to fell you with a look or lift you with a word. The intransigence which made him the great artist he was— his ineffable and cynical wit, the clarity with which he saw most things, including me, and the fact that he never spared me the view. I learned a lot from him. He was the finest of actors and directors.’

## Dame Maggie Smith

Over her huge career, Dame Maggie Smith has collected two Academy Awards, eighteen BAFTA nominations, five BAFTA wins, three Golden Globes, three Emmys, four Screen Actors Guild Awards, a record five *Evening Standard* Awards for Best Actress, and a Tony – and it’s easy to see why. Her charming and commanding presence on the stage and the screen made her the perfect choice to nail the hard-edged yet sentimental Professor McGonagall.

Before the Harry Potter films, Dame Maggie Smith was already a name British households knew and loved, with generations following her work across stage, film and TV since the 1950s. It would be fruitless to try and list all of Smith’s biggest career highs and accolades, but some highlights from her filmography before Harry Potter include award-nominated (and in some cases, winning) turns in *Tea with Mussolini*, *A Room with a View*, *Othello* and *The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie*. And this was before the world knew the Essex-born actress as Professor McGonagall.

In her performance as the no-nonsense deputy headmistress, which Smith debuted to the world back in 2001, millions of Harry Potter fans instantly warmed to her – with Smith emulating the book version of McGonagall to a tee. Emma Watson once remarked that she almost ‘stole the show’, when in the final film, *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2*, McGonagall helped man Hogwarts during the final battle. 

Just like McGonagall, the hard work never stops for Smith, who went on to take on a huge role in ITV’s hit drama *Downton Abbey* and scored more accolades for her role in Alan Bennett’s *The Lady in the Van*. Take any role of any medium: Smith is simply unstoppable – and Hogwarts was all the better with her there.

## Richard Harris 

Albus Dumbledore is perhaps one of the most beloved fictional characters in the entire fantasy genre – and we’re about to see a new star take him on in the shape of Jude Law. But before Jude, two Irish greats tackled the legendary wizard across the Harry Potter films in very different ways. 

In the first two films, *Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone* and *Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets*, directed by Christopher Columbus, the first Dumbledore we saw grace the silver screen was played by Richard Harris. Harris soared to fame in the 60s with his starring role as a bitter Yorkshireman in *This Sporting Life* – one of many films of the era that sparked the ‘angry young men’ British New Wave sub-genre. Harris’s performance earned him many accolades, including Best Actor at Cannes festival, and his first Academy Award nomination, and a rich and varied career followed: such as starring roles as King Arthur and Oliver Cromwell. Upon taking on Albus Dumbledore in his twilight years, Harris was tentative, but eventually did so for his granddaughter. Although Harris sadly died of cancer after *Chamber of Secrets*, his way of playing Dumbledore set a standard, with co-star Robbie Coltrane saying he was ‘like everyone’s favourite grandfather’.

## Sir Michael Gambon

It may have been nerve-wracking for an actor to tackle Dumbledore after the fine example set by Harris, but Sir Michael Gambon was not nervous when he took on the role of the headmaster in Alfonso Cuaron’s darker and more idiosyncratic third instalment, *Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban*. While Harris’s Dumbledore was altogether calmer, Gambon delivered Dumbledore with the fire that we saw in the later books, but still applied the old wit and panache. 

Gambon was a theatre regular in his early acting days and was part of a group of promising new talent in Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre Company. His work with Olivier led him to cinema, debuting with a role in *Othello* in 1965. Many powerful performances in both stage and film would follow, but it was a TV performance in Dennis Potter’s *The Singing Detective* that cemented Gambon’s status as a star, earning him his first BAFTA in 1986. He was knighted in 1998, all the while enjoying an illustrious film and theatre career that continues to this very day. He may have been a very different kind of Dumbledore, but Gambon’s gravitas gave the headmaster a new depth and formidability.

## Dame Julie Walters 

The warmth needed to portray Molly Weasley came in spades thanks to Dame Julie Walters, who has been bringing her wit, energy and eccentricities to the screen, whether it be drama or comedy, for over five decades.

In her earlier career, Birmingham-born Walters was known for frequent collaborations with comedian Victoria Wood. The pair worked together on numerous projects, including the sitcom *Dinner Ladies* and parody soap opera *Acorn Antiques*. However, Walters has always been a adaptable and effortless actor, characteristics which came to prominence in 1983 with her Academy Award-nominated turn in the comedy drama *Educating Rita*. From there, Walters got her teeth into all types of roles, across TV, film, and stage, with notable performances in the films *Buster*, *Stepping Out* and *Billy Elliot* across the 80s and 90s. In 2001, just before the first Harry Potter film was released, she won a Laurence Olivier award for her performance in Arthur Miller’s *All My Sons*. With a string of accolades already under her belt, Walters was well-suited to the role of the fiery yet good-hearted matriarch Mrs Weasley.

On joining the Wizarding World, Walters said: ‘It was a phenomenon and my daughter was nine when it came out – just the right age. I read the book long before the film and when they said, about three or four years later, we’re going to make a film and would you like to play Mrs Weasley, I thought "absolutely! I want to be part of that. What fun!"’

She would go on to have one of the famous lines in the Harry Potter films, yelling ‘Not my daughter, you bitch!’ when Ginny Weasley is nearly attacked during *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2*. The already iconic line was given heft thanks to Julie Walters’ perfect delivery.

Beyond Harry Potter, Walters would go on to join two other prominent movie families – becoming a key member in musical sensation *Mamma Mia*, and a role in the Paddington films. Her Molly Weasley warmth continues to shine through in every role. Long may it continue!

## Emma Thompson

The humour and grace of Emma Thompson made her a perfect match for Harry Potter – in fact, we could imagine her playing numerous characters. In the end, she took her more eccentric side to the role of Sybil Trelawney, Harry’s Divination professor. Emma Thompson’s take on Sybil was eerily similar to the description of her in the books – encased in beads with glasses so thick it gave Thompson bug eyes.

Emma Thompson was beloved before joining Potter of course, working with fellow Potter legend Alan Rickman many times during the course of her career. In 1995, she won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for the film *Sense and Sensibility* in which she also starred. Beyond Potter, Emma took many of her co-stars with her for her *Nanny McPhee* movies, which she also wrote and appeared in, including Ralph Fiennes, Imelda Staunton and Maggie Smith. 

## Helena Bonham-Carter

Not all the roles in Harry Potter were nice ones, of course. Helena Bonham-Carter got the opportunity to take her love of dark and gothic films to that of the cruel Bellatrix Lestrange, one of the most deranged Death Eaters in the wizarding world. 

Before meeting Bellatrix, Helena Bonham-Carter was not scared of taking on challenging roles, making a name for herself in her late teens starring in Merchant Ivory films (co-starring with fellow Harry Potter alumna Maggie Smith). She also starred with Gilderoy Lockhart himself, Kenneth Branagh, in *Mary Shelley's Frankenstein* as the doomed Elizabeth. In the mid-90s, Bonham-Carter started taking on edgier jobs, such as the chain-smoking Marla Singer in *Fight Club*. Around the same time, she met Tim Burton, who she famously collaborated with on numerous projects, from *Charlie and the Chocolate Factory* to *Sweeney Todd*. Bonham-Carter’s attraction to these quirkier projects soon landed her a role in the fifth Harry Potter film, *Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix*, where she shone as one of Lord Voldemort’s more adoring allies. Bonham-Carter quite literally let her hair down for this job, and added a new deranged, twisted layer to the character, such as her taunting of Harry: ‘itty, bitty baby, Potter.’ As well as contributing stylistic tips to the character, the actress even kept Bellatrix’s gnarled teeth after filming. 

During and beyond the Potter films, Bonham-Carter continued to inspire and surprise, landing roles in films such as *The King’s Speech*. She will soon appear in the next series of *The Crown* as Princess Margaret – far more dignified than Bellatrix. 

## Ralph Fiennes

It would take a very grandiose actor, with an impressive background in theatre and Shakespearean roles, to take on one of the most evil wizards who ever lived – and Ralph Fiennes did not disappoint. 

Fiennes was already a seasoned and loved performer before he got to dig deep into the psyche of Lord Voldemort. The twice Academy Award-nominated actor was notable for his roles in *Schindler’s List* and *The English Patient*. 

When Lord Voldemort was reborn in *Goblet of Fire*, Ralph Fiennes relished the opportunity to take on one of the most dangerous and cruel characters in the Harry Potter books. Perhaps even more terrifying was the enigmatic grace with which he portrayed Lord Voldemort – making one of the Darkest wizards of all time not just pure evil, but captivating. Daniel Radcliffe admitted, ‘Ralph genuinely scared me for a few years.’ 

On the role, Ralph once said to the *Guardian* that he tried to play Lord Voldemort as a damaged human: ‘It can be thrilling and quite freeing to play, because all the rules disappear. In *Goblet of Fire*, director Mike Newell encouraged a switchblade explosion of venom and rage.’

It’s fair to say that definitely came across. 

After Lord Voldemort, Ralph Fiennes surprised us all with his comedic acting. His role in Wes Anderson’s *The Grand Budapest Hotel* had him swimming in awards glory once again for making people laugh. Well, maybe he needed a laugh after Lord Voldemort.

In the wizarding world, life isn’t as simple as being either a cat person or a dog person. You might be more of a Hippogriff type, or have a soft spot for a Pygmy Puff, or be altogether enchanted by the watery, er, charms of Grindylows. That said, there was a strong feline and canine presence between the pages of the books – which leads us to an extremely important ranking.

This yellow-eyed, black-furred kitty might not have featured prominently at Hogwarts, but it still managed to make one rather spectacular event happen. It was her fur – when mistaken for one of Millicent Bulstrode’s hairs – which led to Hermione’s transformation into a being that was half-human, half-feline. Due to the unfortunate circumstances, Millicent’s cat gets bottom ranking!

All of the best villains have a calling card, such as Lord Voldemort with his Dark Mark: a skull with a snake curling from its mouth. For Dolores Umbridge, however, it was her round-eyed, round-faced gambolling kittens, romping their rainbow way across the teacups and plates that decorated her office. 

For some reason, this made her more menacing than she might have been if she was followed around by a troupe of screeching black familiars. This was because the saccharine sweetness was distracting; it’s impossible not to find a rainbow-hued kitten appealing. She lured you in with twinsets and tea, then took away your privileges and your will to live. And that’s why those kittens deserve a place in our feline hall of fame – they were instruments of immense trickery. 

Plus, despite the fact Harry thought they were ‘foul’, there is absolutely no way that a plateful of playful multi-coloured kittens can be anything other than cute.

## Mrs Norris

It’s possible to have mixed feelings about one Argus Filch: on the one hand, he was completely unreasonable, set on making the lives of Hogwarts students as miserable as possible, but on the other hand, he was a Squib, trying to carve out a meaningful non-magical existence in one of the most magical places on Earth. 

Mrs Norris seemed to match his mood. It can’t have been much fun to have an existence predicated on sniffing out wrongdoing by troublesome teens, nor one in which most of the people around you expressed the desire to physically harm you. Then again, maybe it was the best job on Earth for a cat. She got to put disobedient young wizards and witches in detention. She had the run of Hogwarts. And there’s no arguing that Mrs Norris was both extremely loyal and extremely good at her job. She was a good friend to Filch and was also quite fluffy, all of which lead to her third-place ranking among the best kitties of the canon.

## Minerva McGonagall

The only reason that this tabby tour de force isn’t at the top of this list is that she wasn’t a real cat. We were properly impressed with Minerva’s mastery of the art of being an Animagus, but that didn’t change the fact that beneath her fur she was a witch through and through – and the leader of our list would see through her disguise in a heartbeat. 

That said, we adored her, from her tiny paws to her spectacle-shaped markings. She was there for Harry from the very opening pages of the very first book, and she remained by his side, either on two legs or on four, for the duration. That earns her first place in human accolades, and a very close second in the moggy Hall of Fame.

Crookshanks! King of Cats! 

Look, there’s simply no denying that in a book rife with beings of the animal persuasion, Crookshanks ruled over them all. Probably part-Kneazle (but that’s still a cat, technically), he wasn’t pretending to be anything he wasn’t: he was simply a squashy-faced, fluffy-as-anything, bow-legged ginger moggie with a suspicious nature. But that didn’t stop him from befriending a desperate Sirius, even though cats and dogs don’t usually get on. And it didn’t stop him from sniffing out – immediately – that Scabbers was not what he seemed.

He underwent immense persecution from Ron, who suspected him of wanting to eat his rat, rather than attempting to bring a murderer to wizarding justice. People called him ugly. They tied tinsel around his neck (wildly undignified). But still, he laboured on, unerring in his cattish instincts to make Hogwarts a better place.

We should have known from the offing, really. After all, he was chosen by Hermione to be her pet. How could he have been anything other than undisputed top cat? Crookshanks, we love you forever. 

>‘This cat isn’t mad,’ said Black hoarsely. He reached out a bony hand and stroked Crookshanks’s fluffy head. ‘He’s the most intelligent of his kind I’ve ever met. He recognised Peter for what he was straight away. And when he met me, he knew I was no dog. It was a while before he trusted me. How could we not start with our dear Nev? The Gryffindor started out unsure and nervous, especially since he and his entire family had once thought he was a Squib. However, after he was dropped out of a window by a delightful uncle and bounced back, the young wizard discovered he did have magic and thus attended Hogwarts, where he went from being a shy and scared beginner to an absolute legend in his own right.

Hermione went from the biggest stickler for the rule book to constantly breaking them with her two best pals. From losing it at Ron and Harry for risking their expulsion in the first book to quite merrily orchestrating a secret, illegal society for learning Defence Against the Dark Arts in book five, Hogwarts’ smartest witch definitely went a long way with rule-breaking. Not to mention Confunding Cormac McLaggen during Quidditch trials, quitting Divination in a moment of rage and punching Malfoy in the face. We’re so proud!

Dudley was a horrible, unbearable bully who was a little too happy using his Smeltings stick, and so when his personality transformation came along, it was just as surprising as it was touching. Dudley was left so traumatised by a Dementor attack, in which Harry saved him, that he had been subtly reaching out to his cousin by leaving him cups of tea and worrying about his wellbeing when he left Privet Drive in book seven. Although we will never quite get over everything Dudley did to torture Harry when they were children, we liked this new Dudley a lot more than the original.

Perhaps a controversial statement, but we’re going to roll with it: Professor Slughorn didn’t get the credit he was due in the Harry Potter novels. The brilliant wizard went from living a nomadic existence, in which he moved from place to place to avoid being recruited by Death Eaters, to repping Slytherin house by fighting at the Battle of Hogwarts! In just two years, going from hiding out of fear to fighting for what was right was seriously courageous, so props to him.

Let’s also not forget that he owned up to his most shameful secret to help Harry defeat Voldemort, which is a different kind of bravery entirely. All in all, Harry couldn’t have done it without Slughorn, but we wish Slughorn had made things a little easier in the first place.

We all know Ginny had a huge crush on Harry, and struggled so much in her first year at Hogwarts that she poured her heart out into a diary that, rather unfortunately, contained a part of Voldemort’s soul. But after surviving the Chamber of Secrets and, with a little advice from Hermione, she managed to find herself again at Hogwarts. She became a talented witch with a predilection for the Bat Bogey Hex, was a top Chaser for Gryffindor during Quidditch, and stopped pining after Harry. In fact, by the time he started to notice how amazing she was, she was already dating Dean Thomas!

Who else could complete this list but Harry himself? Going from an unwanted family member shoved in a cupboard under the stairs, teased and ridiculed by his cousin and moments away from attending a secondary school wearing Dudley’s old, dyed jumpers, the hero of the wizarding world didn’t do too badly for himself once he managed to get to Hogwarts. Although he was always pretty much himself, he grew in confidence and accepted every challenge that was thrown at him before finally defeating Voldemort while simultaneously trying to save his soul.

Oh, and he was 17 when he did this. Not too bad for a boy who once got chased up a tree by a bulldog!

Harry had a few nicknames (The Boy Who Lived, The Chosen One, Undesirable Number One, etc.), and most were designed to single him out. But while Harry was undeniably unique, not all of his experiences were. In fact, Harry was mirrored by other characters across the wizarding world, near and far.

## Neville Longbottom

The one most closely aligned to Harry was, of course, Neville –  the boy who could have been The Boy Who Lived, if Voldemort had interpreted Trelawney’s prophecy differently. Both born as the seventh month died to parents who had thrice defied Voldemort, both were irretrievably changed by Voldemort’s actions despite it being Harry that Voldemort marked as his equal.

There’s no doubt Neville was also marked by Voldemort. With his mother and father tortured into insanity by Death Eaters, Neville had, like Harry, grown up without his parents. And like Harry, their sacrifice gave him courage. Harry and Neville were also 100 per cent true Gryffindors: the only two we ever saw pull the Sword of Gryffindor out of the Sorting Hat.

## Lord Voldemort

Neville and Harry weren’t the only ones to grow up without parents. Voldemort himself was in this situation as a child, not that it led to any form of empathy from the boy born Tom Riddle. Like it or not, Harry couldn’t deny that he and his greatest enemy shared similar traits, and this goes beyond Voldemort transferring some of his powers to Harry.

Harry’s childhood was more like Riddle’s than any other character in the wizarding world, given they both grew up without their parents, were raised by Muggles, had no knowledge of magic and didn’t hear of Hogwarts until they were 11. It’s a likeness both acknowledged; when they faced each other in *Chamber of Secrets*, Riddle pointed it out, and when Harry discovered Riddle’s past in *Half-Blood Prince* he saw it even more strongly. Yet, as Dumbledore said, their choices were as different as their backgrounds were similar, and that’s what mattered.

## Isolt Sayre

One of the things Harry shared with Voldemort was the ability to speak Parseltongue, although this was due to the phenomenon of Voldemort accidentally making Harry a Horcrux. For poor Isolt Sayre, she found herself at the end of a long Salazar Slytherin family line. However, Isolt couldn’t have been less like her pure-blood-obsessed ancestors, such as her aunt Gormlaith Gaunt. Much like how Harry never asked to be so embroiled in Lord Voldemort’s life, Isolt certainly didn’t ask to be embroiled in Salazar Slytherin’s.
