## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

Well, we thought it would be fun to find out! As it is Scorpio season, we’re looking at the dashing and daring, Sirius Black. Of course, any similarities may be a total coincidence. We’ll leave that up to you to decide. Why not share this with your Scorpio friends and see what they think?

## Loyal 
We never had any doubt that [Sirius Black](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sirius-black) was as loyal as they come and that’s something true of the Scorpio star sign too. Scorpios are that ride-or-die friend, willing to protect those they love with an unrivalled ferocity. They’re not quick to forgive and forget, so if you upset their friends, they’ll remember… 

Now doesn’t this sound like Sirius’ relationship with the [Marauders](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/marauders)? Sirius would do anything for his friends without a second thought – whether that was becoming an [Animagus](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/animagus) to ensure Remus didn’t have to suffer every full moon or hunting down Peter Pettigrew because he was responsible for the death of James. But the action that truly proves he’s loyal to his bones? The way he took his godfather responsibilities to Harry so seriously. This was his best friend’s son. He would protect him at all costs – even if that cost was his life.

## Intense 
According to astrologers, Scorpios are not ones for casual connections with other people. Once you are in their life, they will want to find out every detail about you. They are so intense – especially when they fix you with a stare that peers into your very soul – that they are often mistaken for being a fire sign. When the reality is, this is a water sign that feels emotions very deeply.  

We think that this could describe a certain Marauder – we certainly wouldn’t have called Sirius laidback. It is clear that he was prone to being swept up in a storm of unyielding emotions. Like the time that he asked Harry to move in with him, mere moments after being reunited. It was a lovely gesture, but pretty full on. Or the time he lashed out at being cooped up inside [Grimmauld Place](/fact-file/locations/number-twelve-grimmauld-place). It was completely understandable, especially having been locked up in [Azkaban](/fact-file/locations/azkaban) for so many years, but we would definitely describe that outburst as passionate. And let’s not forget that he sent Harry the top-of-the-range Firebolt out of the blue. Not only was it an extravagant gift, but it proved that Sirius didn’t do, or feel, anything by halves.

## Mysterious  
Sirius Black was certainly a character that was shrouded in a cloak of mystery. Only a handful of people knew who he *truly* was as opposed to what the wider wizarding community *thought* he was. Apparently, that makes his quite like those who fall under the Scorpio star sign.  

Scorpios are known to be enigmatic. They like to keep their cards close to their chests and don’t share information about themselves readily. It can take years to crack the outer shell of a Scorpio and get them to share a single one of their vulnerabilities.  

Sirius was no stranger to secrets – and we’re not just talking about the fact he *wasn’t* a murderer. Sirius managed to sneak out of Azkaban and go on the run, evading capture until his death. Plus, he, along with the other members of the [Order of the Phoenix](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/order-of-the-phoenix), kept the location of their headquarters a secret. Then there was the fact he never confirmed or denied if he was actually Stubby Boardman, lead singer of popular singing group The Hobgoblins – mysterious indeed.

## Not afraid to take risks 

Thanks to their planetary ruler, Pluto, Scorpios feel a pull to the outliers of human experience. Put simply, if it is risky, they are drawn to it and can easily find themselves on a dangerous path in life. 

Well, this doesn’t sound like Sirius. We all know that he prioritised safety and liked a quiet life. Just kidding! We would argue that Sirius was one of the biggest risk-takers in the wizarding world. There was the time he broke into Hogwarts in pursuit of [Peter Pettigrew](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/peter-pettigrew). A dodgy move right under the nose of Albus Dumbledore who was both powerful and unaware that Sirius was a friend at that point. Then there was the time he accompanied Harry to King’s Cross Station despite being a wanted man. A gamble that didn’t pay off as he was spotted at the station. Plus, he was unafraid to try and rescue Harry from the [Department of Mysteries](/fact-file/locations/the-department-of-mysteries) despite knowing how dangerous it was. While brave, this move was also dangerous and led to some tragic consequences.

## Honest 
You might think that it is a rather a contradiction describing Sirius as both secretive and honest, but we believe he possessed both of these traits, and we are happy to tell you why. Incidentally, this is another characteristic you often find in Scorpios. 

Scorpios are unafraid to tell the truth – they’re even known as being one of the most genuine signs of the zodiac. They don’t put on a front when talking to someone and deplore dishonesty in others. 

This rings true when it comes to Sirius Black. Despite his secretive background, he was always honest with Harry. He would not sugarcoat information and never hesitated to tell him the truth – even when others held back. In fact, it was his willingness to answer any of Harry’s questions about Order of the Phoenix business that left him at odds with [Mrs Weasley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/molly-weasley) (a formidable foe). While both cared a great deal for Harry and loved him fiercely, they had rather different opinions on how *open* you should be with a teenager. But for Sirius, the truth would always come first.
