## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

## Hermione Granger – Charity worker

The library might have been the go-to inner sanctum for Hogwarts’ favourite frizzy-haired bookworm, but hefty tomes weren’t the only thing that put a spring in Hermione’s step. Her fiery approach to house-elf rights, and her determination to take Rita Skeeter on for her sneaky story-gathering, proved that she was a witch who liked to make a difference.

## Neville Longbottom – Landscape gardener

Ever since Professor Sprout praised his aptitude for Herbology to fake Mad-Eye Moody, Neville found his niche. 

In later life he may have taken up the mantle of Professor at Hogwarts, but in a magic-free Muggle society, he’d most likely show off his green-fingered skills transforming gardens and parks. No doubt he’d create the most memorable flower beds and shrubbery displays.

## Molly Weasley – Hotelier

Mrs Weasley was never happier than when she was piling the table high with delicious dishes for her loved ones, so she’d be in her element feeding up guests at a bed and breakfast. ## Luna Lovegood – Artist

We can definitely picture Luna in a pair of paint-splattered dungarees with a forgotten paintbrush tucked behind her ear. The beautiful friendship mural on her bedroom ceiling was a fine display of her creative flair, and her distinct dottiness would ensure her work stood out from the crowd. 

Luna’s unique outlook on life might not be for everyone, but there had to be somebody out there who wanted nothing more than an abstract impression of Nargles to hang above their mantelpiece.

## Harry Potter – MI5 (Classified)

Since Aurors don’t actually exist in the Muggle world, Harry wouldn’t be able to realise his long-harboured ambition to be one. All isn’t lost though, as there are plenty of other professions that would require similar characteristics. 

Harry’s keen sense of observation, strong combat skills and ability to find trouble wherever he went would certainly be useful if he became a spy for MI5. But we can’t tell you everything about his new job in the Muggle world – it’s classified, you see.

## Sirius Black – Professional dog walker

It might not be the most glamorous of occupations but charging about outside with a pack of dogs would be right up this wizard’s street. Having lived in a cave by surviving on scraps as Padfoot, Sirius would certainly know how to handle man’s best friend. 

His barking laugh, adventurous streak and knowledge of what it’s like to, well, be a dog would definitely come in handy; and as long as he didn’t get them caught up in a tussle with a werewolf we think he’d do just fine.

Many (but not all) of our questions about the wizarding world have been solved. We know who the Half-Blood Prince is; we know who opened the Chamber of Secrets; we know why Voldemort was such a nuisance to kill. What we *don’t* know is what Rubeus Hagrid kept in his suspicious flowery pink umbrella. But we have a pretty good idea.

Let’s look at the facts. Hagrid was so large, hairy and bearded, swathed as he usually was in a capacious moleskin coat, that rain would have had a hard time penetrating his tough, half-giant exterior. What need would he really have for a pretty pink umbrella?

Of course, the flowery accessory was far less flimsy than it looked. Although the truth was never confirmed, it was Harry’s utmost belief that the brolly contained the broken pieces of Hagrid’s old school wand (oak, 16 inches, rather bendy) that was snapped in half when Hagrid was expelled during his third year at Hogwarts. 

As an unqualified wizard who didn’t finish his education, Hagrid was not technically allowed to perform magic. And yet, the beloved gamekeeper seemed very magical. 

When we first met Hagrid, he had been given special dispensation to use magical means to find Harry after far too many of his Hogwarts letters were suspiciously ignored. So when Hagrid finally caught up with Harry and the Dursleys in that leaky Hut-on-the-Rock, he was eager to put the opportunity to good use.

But, as Harry and Ron found out the hard way, it was virtually impossible to use a broken wand. Slug vomit, anyone? So unless something in the pink umbrella allowed it to channel magic, or unless very special magic had been used to repair it (an Elder wand, perhaps?), Hagrid shouldn’t have been able to have much luck with a couple of broken pieces.

There’s also the question of how much magic Hagrid could really know – he only had three years’ worth of lessons after all, with no O.W.L.s or N.E.W.T.s to help hone his skills. 

Despite this, Hagrid seemed to know quite a bit. He got a boat to quickly transport Harry away from the Dursleys; he tapped the right brick to gain access to Diagon Alley, and admitted to giving his suspiciously large, boulder-sized pumpkins ‘a bit o’ help’ – and we don’t think he meant plant food. 

Occasionally he struck unexpected gold, such as the intricate Transfiguration magic we imagine is required to give Dudley Dursley a pig’s tail. 

Sadly, the umbrella didn’t always get it right. During *Deathly Hallows*, Harry and the Order of the Phoenix were pursued by Voldemort and his Death Eaters mid-flight, with Harry in the side-car of his late godfather Sirius’s flying motorbike. With Hagrid by his side, Harry’s car broke off at a very inconvenient time despite a ‘Reparo’ charm from Hagrid.

But despite a few bumps, Hagrid would always have something that a lifetime of Hogwarts lessons could never teach him: fierce love for his friends, who happened to be some of the greatest wizards ever. Throw in an army of some of the most awesome magical creatures of all time (Buckbeak! Aragog! Norbert!) and Hagrid was more powerful than ten Voldemorts stood on top of each other wearing a big coat.

So leave the brolly at home next time, Rubeus – you’re magical enough.

At first, summer wasn’t exactly Harry’s favourite time of the year – probably to do with the fact it was the only time of year he had to go back to the Dursleys. But thanks to a few good friends, the sunny season soon got a lot more enjoyable for Harry, and over the books we saw some properly brilliant magical summers. Here are a few of our favourite summery moments.

After causing scandal in the Dursley household when Dobby the house-elf ruined a dinner party, Harry was whisked off to Ron’s home, The Burrow, in the nick of time. Although Ron’s ears may have gone red at the thought of showing Harry his ramshackle, topsy-turvy home, Harry instantly fell in love with The Burrow’s wonderful, magical, slapdash ways. Before they all headed back to Hogwarts, Harry spent many happy days playing Quidditch with apples, de-gnoming the Weasleys’ garden and having fourth helpings of Mrs Weasley’s fantastic dinners.

In Harry’s fourth year, his trip to the Burrow was especially fantastic due to the impending Quidditch World Cup – this meant the arrival of bonus Weasleys. Ron’s two oldest brothers, Bill and Charlie, brought a new, cooler vibe to The Burrow, and in one particularly enjoyable scene, ignited a battle of old furniture in the garden.

But Harry’s magical summer wasn’t just to be at The Burrow that year; this was the year of the Quidditch World Cup, one of the most esteemed magical sporting events ever. Seeing as Harry had only ever played at Hogwarts, this whopping great tournament really opened his eyes – first of all there was the experience of camping with so many other wizards, then came the revelation about other wizarding schools, then there was the big match itself...

The mention of Lord Voldemort, the Dark Lord who was responsible for numerous grisly murders throughout wizarding history, doesn’t exactly make you think ‘summer’. Oddly, a moment of peace in the glorious sunshine at The Burrow with Ron and Hermione in *Half-Blood Prince* makes Harry feel so much better about his brutal task ahead: defeating the Dark Lord. After telling his two best friends about the mysteries of his prophecy, finally, he was suddenly relieved they still wanted to stand by his side. 

> Harry did not really listen. A warmth was spreading through him that had nothing to do with the sunlight; a tight obstruction in his chest seemed to be dissolving. He knew that Ron and Hermione were more shocked than they were letting on, but the mere fact that they were still there on either side of him, speaking bracing words of comfort, not shrinking from him as though he were contaminated or dangerous, was worth more than he could ever tell them. <br>

Despite Ginny Weasley nicknaming Bill’s wife-to-be ‘Phlegm’, Bill and Fleur Delacour’s glorious summer wedding positively glowed, which might have been something to do with the fact Fleur was part-Veela. With Voldemort on the rise, and Harry about to embark on a journey to destroy him, the wedding served as a reminder that, even in the darkest of times, there was always hope, not to mention the potential for a rollicking good party.

Perhaps he needed a hobby, like [Gobstones](/writing-by-jk-rowling/gobstones "Gobstones by J.K. Rowling") (his mother was president of the Hogwarts club, after all) or maybe Dumbledore could have taken him ten-pin bowling. Still, there are a few activities out there that never failed to put a smirk on that solemn face of his. 

## Giving Harry a hard time 

Mister Potter wasn’t universally loved in the wizarding world – just ask Filch or the Slytherins – yet Snape took anti-Potter sentiment to a whole new level. He constantly berated the ‘Famous Harry Potter’ and never missed an opportunity to put the Chosen One firmly in his place. It all came down to some bad blood: everyone told Harry he was just like his father, but only Snape meant that as an insult.

## Anything to do with Slytherin 

Snape was quick to pick his favourite pupils and they all had one thing in common – they looked good in green. Though each Head of House enjoyed seeing their own students succeed, Snape tended to overlook most of his pupils’ bad behaviour. It didn’t matter if a Slytherin started the fight; whoever else was involved would be the ones losing house points.

## Potion-making, obviously

## Casual Dark Arts usage 

Potions tips weren’t the only things scribbled in the Half-Blood Prince’s old school books. Snape had been dabbling in the [Dark Arts](/collection/the-dark-arts "The Dark Arts") since his school days and came up with many choice curses, including the vicious [Sectumsempra](/features/sectumsempra "Sectumsempra"). According to [Sirius](/features/sirius-black "Sirius Black"), Snape knew more hexes when he arrived at Hogwarts than most students learned by seventh year, so it’s no wonder he fell in with a bad crowd.

## Taking points from Gryffindor 

Snape loved punishing [Gryffindor](/collection/all-about-gryffindor "Hogwarts houses: Gryffindor") students so much he’d use almost any excuse. [Hermione](/features/hermione-granger "Hermione Granger") knew this unfairness all too well. She got points deducted for such crimes as helping her classmates (usually [Neville](/features/neville-longbottom "Neville Longbottom")) and for answering questions correctly, or in Snape’s words ‘for being an insufferable know-it-all’.
