## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

Obviously you pick up on many new plot points and details (Slytherin’s locket was first seen in *Order of the Phoenix!*  Sirius is first mentioned in *Philosopher’s Stone!*) but the eyes of someone in their twenties also pick up on a lot of things we, as children, were simply too young to see. 


## Ron was AWFUL at wooing Hermione

How frustrating was it that Ron and Hermione didn’t kiss until the Battle of Hogwarts in their final year? Sure, little things like Lord Voldemort certainly got in the way, but for the most part, let’s all just agree it was Ron’s fault. 

During the Yule Ball in *Goblet of Fire*, Ron had his first shot at asking Hermione on a date, but blew it by saying: ‘We need partners, we’re going to look really stupid if we haven’t got any,’ as his excuse for asking her. He then spent the entire evening unreasonably stewing when she bagged Triwizard champion Viktor Krum as her date. But it didn’t end there; when Hermione asked Ron to the Slug Club Christmas party, he somehow messed that up too, by going out with Lavender Brown – which obviously saddened Hermione further. 

And that’s without mentioning all the sarcastic comments, making fun of the things Hermione cared about (like S.P.E.W.) and just generally being immature. No wonder Ron ended up reading a book called *Twelve Fail-Safe Ways to Charm Witches.*

## And Harry wasn’t exactly great with the ladies either

Look, we understand that Harry had a terrible time of it, but there were numerous times when his adolescent behaviour was pretty unreasonable – especially in *Order of the Phoenix*. When he wasn’t yelling at his friends, he was upsetting his new girlfriend Cho Chang – whose previous boyfriend was Triwizard champion Cedric Diggory.

As if being a teenage boy with your first girlfriend wasn’t hard enough, Cho regularly and understandably burst into tears about the death of Cedric. But Harry’s awkward approach – trying to change the subject – just upset Cho further. Not to mention the fact that he accidentally invited Hermione on his Hogsmeade date with Cho. Come on, Harry!

## The house-elf situation was so much worse than we initially realised

As children, the house-elves often seemed adorable, quirky and helpful. As grown-ups, however, the full scope of just how traumatising their lives must have been fully comes into effect. 

Creatures confined to being servants, who get incredibly upset if they are put in a position where they must disobey their masters? Hermione, always far older than her years, was heavily mocked for her organisation S.P.E.W. – but now we appreciate her wisdom.

## Viktor Krum was a bit forward

During *Goblet of Fire*, suave Quidditch star and Triwizard champion Viktor Krum only had eyes for Hermione. This is all lovely and everything, but during the Tournament’s second task, Hermione is taken as Krum’s person that ‘he’ll sorely miss’ and plunged into the Hogwarts lake for him to save.

Alongside that, Fleur’s sister was taken, Ron – Harry’s best friend for four years – was taken, as was Cedric’s girlfriend, Cho. These all make sense. As for Hermione and Krum? They’d known each other *five minutes.* It’s like saying ‘I love you’ on a first date.

## Befriending Harry must have been so hard for Dumbledore

When we were first introduced to the wise and warm-hearted Professor Dumbledore it was almost impossible to believe that his life could be anything more than happy memories of sherbet lemons.

Of course, as time went by, we realised just how much Dumbledore really held on his shoulders – such as the prophecy of Harry’s fate, along with the tragic memories of his own childhood past. Imagine trying to avoid the question of a young, 11-year-old Harry, who had just come face to face with Voldemort for the first proper time, on why this horrible wizard seemed to hate him so much? Imagine telling Harry he saw a pair of socks in the Mirror of Erised, when in fact he saw his family, whole and alive again.

## Hogwarts students don’t have to study maths

As if it wasn’t enough that wizards attended a school that could teach them how to turn things into other things, how to fly or how to fight Dark magic, there was one other key bonus point about going to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry: no maths. Do you hear? There was no maths – possibly the worst subject in Muggle education history. 

Okay, so there was ‘Arithmancy’, which Hermione studied alongside every other subject under the sun, and it sounded pretty close. This focused on the magical properties of numbers rather than, say, simultaneous equations, but even that sounds enjoyable. Life isn’t fair.

## The Dementors are an allegory for depression

As children, the Dementors were fearsome, cloaked and terrifying to any young reader. As an adult, their presence is even more horrifying when you realise they symbolise depression, as J.K. Rowling has confirmed before in interviews.

Then the descriptions suddenly feel all the more powerful, especially during *Prisoner of Azkaban*, where Harry fears he is ‘weak’ because he suffers at the hands of the Dementors worse than others.

## The books teach us a great deal about prejudice

The awful attitudes towards Muggles from certain Dark wizards is horrible to read as a child, but growing up among the real-world issues of prejudice, we truly understand how dark the world can be, Voldemort or no Voldemort. 

In J.K. Rowling’s treatment of the divide between the magical and the non-magical, pure-bloods and Muggle-borns, we realise that she was teaching a very valuable lesson about society – and creating a generation very knowledgeable about kindness and tolerance.

## We can revisit favourite characters

It’s been an epic journey and we’ve lost so many along the way: Sirius falling through the veil, Dumbledore falling from the Astronomy Tower; Tonks and Lupin lying side by side in the Great Hall... these moments will stay with us forever, indelibly printed on our minds. 

But, just for a while, we can open up *Philosopher’s Stone* and start afresh, indulging in a little time with those favourites we’ve lost, appreciating their wit and wisdom anew and pretending to ourselves that this time the outcome will be different. 

## We can study the books for details we might have missed

It started with a scruffy-haired boy sleeping in a cupboard under the stairs and finished with a young man able to make the biggest sacrifice in order to do the right thing. Seven books later and J.K. Rowling’s well-crafted story is out there for us to obsess over to our heart’s content. 

There’s still so much to appreciate. On a fourth read you might notice a tongue-in-cheek joke, on the tenth you may realise the meaning of a character’s name. Even if you connected the dots long ago and know the people and plot inside out, there’s still nothing like experiencing a jolt when Slytherin’s locket first appears or when ‘Nice night for it!’ is fatefully uttered. 

## It’s comforting, like an old friend

Immersing yourself back into the portrait-lined corridors of Hogwarts is like pulling on a favourite old jumper. It’s comforting and familiar to take a trip to The Burrow, go wand shopping with Harry in Diagon Alley and feel your heart dive along with him as he hurtles to the ground to retrieve Neville’s Remembrall. 

It doesn’t matter that we’ve retraced these steps hundreds of times before, it’s the knowledge that whatever is going on in our lives, if we’re stressed or upset or just in need of five minutes’ peace, the Harry Potter stories will always be there for us, just waiting on the page. 

## It’s escapism like no other

From the moment we opened the first book and read the first page, we were hooked. Entering a fantastical world full of wondrous spells and enchanted objects, J.K. Rowling’s epic tale spanned seven books and seven years of our lives. 

As children we grew up with our favourite characters and learned lessons of loyalty, forgiveness, joy and heartbreak alongside them. And now that the books are finished and we’ve watched the final film a hundred times, we continue to return to this much-loved story. 

It’s a journey we know inside-out, have analysed over and over, and yet returning to it is like saying hello to an old friend. The Harry Potter books are spellbinding and re-reading them is how we keep the magic alive.

Fred and George were certifiably the comedians of the Weasley clan – which meant they could sometimes be a tad sarcastic to their brothers and sister (okay, mostly Percy). But underneath their well-intentioned tormenting, they also cared very deeply for their fellow siblings. Here are some reasons why we all wish Fred and George were our brothers… 

## They always said the right thing at the right time

When their youngest sibling Ginny was distraught about not being able to go to Hogwarts, Fred and George knew exactly what to say to cheer her up. 

> ‘Hurry up!’ their mother said, and the three boys clambered onto the train. They leant out of the window for her to kiss them goodbye and their younger sister began to cry.

## They would make you feel like an important part of the family 

Fred and George could be quite the terrible twosome, and delighted in making fun of their siblings’ more sensible and school-related achievements – such as Percy becoming a prefect in *Philosopher’s Stone*. (Or rather, Percy talking relentlessly about becoming a prefect all summer.)

But they still had a lot of affection for their siblings, and went out of their way to make sure they felt included. Whether forcing Percy to wear the patented Weasley Christmas jumper, or doing Quidditch training with their younger siblings over the holidays, the twins knew that family was important.

It’s fair to say Fred and George advocated rule-breaking behaviour (they were the ones who bequeathed Harry a map that used the phrase ‘I solemnly swear that I am up to no good’, after all), but sometimes, the pair surprised us all by being genuinely inspiring forces. 

> ‘The thing about growing up with Fred and George,’ said Ginny thoughtfully, ‘is that you sort of start thinking anything’s possible if you’ve got enough nerve.’

## They would be proud of you 

It was hard for Fred and George to end a sentence without a punchline, which could be tough when it came to, say, expressing actual emotions towards their siblings. But every now and again the reader caught a glimpse of how much the twins were genuinely proud of what their family accomplished. From Ron making it onto the Quidditch team to Ginny’s adeptness for Bat-Bogey Hexes, Fred and George would sing their siblings’ praises when they deserve it.

Here’s the case for why Hufflepuffs would make complex, exciting and truly delectable best friends. 

## Everything the Sorting Hat says about Hufflepuffs is true 

In *Philosopher’s Stone*, the Sorting Hat describes Hufflepuffs as ‘just and loyal’ and says ‘those patient Hufflepuffs are true and unafraid of toil’. In *Goblet of Fire* we learn that ‘For Hufflepuff, hard workers were most worthy of admission.’ 

Hear that? People who are just, loyal, true, patient and never one to shy away from a challenge. In other words, the perfect ‘best friend’ candidates. 

## Hufflepuff may secretly be the ‘party house’

The general consensus is that Hufflepuffs are all nice, loyal… but who’s to say they aren’t a pack of secretly, wild, badly-dancing, party animals? All the best parties gravitate towards the kitchen, and guess where the Hufflepuff common room can be found? Yup, right next to Hogwarts’ massive kitchens. 

Their common room was something of a mystery in the books – it was the only one Harry never got to see. But there is no evidence to contradict that Hufflepuffs were having regular get-togethers, eating delectable snacks and partaking in a cheeky pumpkin juice or two. 

We also have the Fat Friar, who compared to the other melancholy, lachrymose or downright frightening house ghosts, was known to be an official barrel of laughs. And everybody knows that badgers are the wildest animals out there.

## Hufflepuffs always try to do the right thing 
Hufflepuffs have a strong moral code and sense of right and wrong. J.K. Rowling has even said that almost all of Hufflepuff house stayed during the Battle of Hogwarts, so they’re incredibly brave when faced with real danger. 

Just look at one of Hufflepuff’s fiercest alumni, Cedric Diggory in *Goblet of Fire*. When the Slytherins made offensive badges reading ‘Potter Stinks’ during the Triwizard Tournament, it’s likely Cedric asked people to stop wearing them – even though he was Harry’s competitor in the trials, and as far as Cedric knew, Harry did put his name in the Goblet of Fire on purpose.

## Hufflepuffs are open-minded

One of the things that has always stood out about Hufflepuff compared to the other houses is how accepting of everyone they are. Hufflepuffs value everyone and treat them as an equal. In *Order of the Phoenix*, the Sorting Hat summed that sentiment up nicely, in the words of Helga Hufflepuff herself.

> Said Ravenclaw, ‘We’ll teach those whose 
> Intelligence is surest.’ 
> Said Gryffindor, ‘We’ll teach all those

> And treat them just the same.’

Your Hufflepuff best friend will never judge you. They’ll love you for who you are. 

## Hufflepuffs will always help out a friend in trouble

Even if it’s inconvenient – or a downright danger to their wellbeing – Hufflepuffs are going to help their friends out. Hufflepuffs may have been dubbed ‘a lot o’ duffers’, but heed Ernie Macmillan’s words during the Battle of Hogwarts. 

> ‘... evacuation will be overseen by Mr Filch and Madam Pomfrey. Prefects, when I give the word, you will organise your house and take your charges, in an orderly fashion, to the evacuation point.’ 
> Many of the students looked petrified. However, as Harry skirted the walls, scanning the Gryffindor table for Ron and Hermione, Ernie Macmillan stood up at the Hufflepuff table and shouted, ‘And what if we want to stay and fight?’
