## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

In Harry Potter’s world, there’s Divination, Astronomy and prophecies – all used to make sense of the mysteries of the universe and the great beyond. But what about astrology? We know Professor Trelawney did touch upon it, but do any of our favourite characters happen to display personality traits that are unique to their star sign?

## Quick-witted
According to astrologers, Geminis are governed by the planet Mercury, which means communication is key to this sign. Specifically, Geminis are known to have the gift of the gab. They can be charming, they love a good gossip and are known to be quick-witted. In fact, out of all the zodiac signs, you’d be inclined to think that theirs is the mind that moves the fastest.

[Draco Malfoy](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/draco-malfoy) wasn’t up there telling ‘knock knock’ jokes but he did have a sharp wit. He came up with some incredible zingers during his time at Hogwarts. However, sometimes a Gemini’s quick wit can turn into a sharp tongue, Malfoy certainly fell into this trap. His barbs were nearly always unkind. Like the time he insulted Ron’s dress robes. Saying they were fashionable in about 1890? Funny but mean. Or when he told [Goyle](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/gregory-goyle) that if he was any slower, he would be going backwards? Inspired but cruel. But one thing is certain, Malfoy had a way with words.

## Jack of all trades
Geminis are often quick to pick up new hobbies or skills. They tend to demonstrate some knowledge on a wide range of subjects rather than an incredibly deep knowledge of one. The astrologer, Joanna Martine Woolfolk, has even referred to them as a ‘mental magpie’ as they pick up information, gossip and titbits of knowledge before moving onto the next shiny thing. This is partly fuelled by their endless curiosity and desire to always learn more.

Malfoy was certainly a man of many talents, so we can see how this applies to him. He took on many roles during his time at Hogwarts. He was the Seeker on the Slytherin Quidditch team – armed with a whole heap of Nimbus 2001s. He relished being a member of Umbridge’s [Inquisitorial Squad](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/inquisitorial-squad)… in fact, he loved it far too much. Then there was his role as [Prefect](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/prefect), another job in which he did not use his power for good. Malfoy was nothing if not versatile.

## Intelligent
Ok, Malfoy might not have had the intellect of Hermione Granger or Albus Dumbledore, but we do think that he was one clever cookie, and we’ll happily explain why. Incidentally, intelligence happens to be a key trait of many Geminis.

According to astrologers, Geminis are Air signs, and they are typically associated with the mind. Because of their intelligence, Air signs like to be intellectually stimulated and challenged. This goes hand-in-hand with the curiosity often demonstrated by Geminis who are always seeking to learn more. 

How does this apply to our snarky Slytherin? Well, firstly we believe that Malfoy often kept just how smart he was quiet. However, if you dig a little there are plenty of examples that speak to his brainy disposition. Malfoy was only one of a handful of students to get an ‘Outstanding’ on his Potions O.W.L., enabling him to take it at N.E.W.T. level. He came up with the scheme of sneaking a bunch of Death Eaters into Hogwarts via the [Vanishing Cabinet](/fact-file/objects/vanishing-cabinet) – even fixing the broken cabinet himself. While this was no doubt a dastardly scheme, it did speak to his cleverness and his intellectual curiosity. Finally, Draco was a talented [Occlumens](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/occlumency) who could shield his mind from powerful wizards like Snape. These are just a handful of examples, there are many more that demonstrate the intelligence associated with this star sign.

## Spontaneous
If you’re looking for a star sign that is known for its spontaneity, then you need look no further than a Gemini. They hate routine and monotony and like to jump from adventure to adventure. If you want a friend who is willing to join you on a last-minute holiday, then we suggest cosying up to a Gemini – they’re all about vibes over plans.

While their spontaneity speaks to their often fun-loving nature, it can tip over into impulsivity and *this* is where we see the connection to Draco Malfoy. Remember the first Care of Magical Creatures lesson in *Prisoner of Azkaban*? Despite warnings on how to approach a haughty [Hippogriff](/fact-file/creatures/hippogriff), Malfoy did not listen. He allowed his annoyance at Harry being the star of the show to cloud his judgement and suffered the consequences. If he had thought things through, rather than acting on a whim, it might have saved him a trip to the hospital wing.

## Adaptable
Geminis are known for their ability to adapt and change to any given situation. The symbol for this particular zodiac sign is the twins, which speaks directly to the duality of their personality. Unfortunately, because of this changeability, Geminis have earned the unfair reputation of being two-faced. When really, it is more that this sign is a chameleon, able to adapt to what the situation demands.

Now we think this chameleon-like ability is something that Draco Malfoy demonstrated. He was a person with many different masks. There was the Hogwarts bully, the devoted son, the social climber, the star of the [Slytherin common room](/fact-file/locations/the-slytherin-common-room), the [Death Eater](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/death-eaters) and the father – the list goes on and on. Ultimately, Malfoy was shrewd and had the ability to mould himself to fit the role he needed to play at that exact moment.

There’s no doubt that our favourite half-cat, half-[Kneazle](/fact-file/creatures/kneazle) saved the day in *Prisoner of Azkaban*. But before we delve into his daring deeds and uncanny ability to sniff out suspicious sorts, let’s look at the other reason why he was the MVP of this story – his purrfect personality. 

Right from the moment that [Crookshanks](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/crookshanks) leapt into our lives, we knew that this was one pet that was going to firmly find his way into our hearts. Fluffy, bright orange and squishy? He’s got every adorable box ticked! Then there was the fact we first met him as he landed on Ron’s head in a whirlwind of chaos and fur – iconic behaviour. 

But as well as being a cat and doing normal, cat-like things, Crookshanks was also a part-time detective, which we saw from the moment he first met [Scabbers](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/scabbers). A purr-ivate investigator, if you will.

Yep, while other characters may have marvelled at the longevity of what they assumed to be a common garden rat, Crookshanks took one look at him and knew exactly what he was… An Animagus hiding in plain sight. Thankfully for Crookshanks, as a cat chasing down a rat, it didn’t really look that out of the ordinary. 

Now, it might have been due to his Kneazle heritage (they have a particular knack for spotting unsavoury characters), but we still think the speed with which Crookshanks rumbled [Peter Pettigrew](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/peter-pettigrew) was very impressive. The [Weasleys](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-weasleys) didn’t clock Scabbers’ true identity for over a decade. For Crookshanks, it took less than a Hogwarts school year.  

His dogged (or cat equivalent) determination was something we greatly admired too. Crookshanks didn’t give up on his pursuit of Scabbers. He could have easily leant into the soft life of a cat, curling up in a squishy armchair by the fire in the [Gryffindor common room](/fact-file/locations/the-gryffindor-common-room), being fed treats and having lots of cuddles with [Hermione](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger). But that’s for moggies who aren’t mavericks. No, Crookshanks pursued that rat with pure gusto. It might have resulted in him making few friends – at one point we think he was Ron’s worst enemy – but he was instrumental in revealing Peter’s secret.

Conversely, he was one of the only characters to see the good in [Sirius Black](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sirius-black). Even Sirius’ closest living friend, [Remus Lupin](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/remus-lupin), had lost faith in him – drawing the dark conclusion that his old friend must have betrayed the Potters and murdered Pettigrew. But the star that he is, Crookshanks decided to help Sirius clear his name once and for all. 

This was where Crookshanks really showed his true (vibrant orange) colours. He didn’t just chase after Scabbers, he truly helped Sirius. We imagine that after years of being falsely accused, locked up in prison and adrift from those he loved took its toll. When Crookshanks became his buddy, not only did it help Sirius with practical matters – such as getting hold of the passwords to the Gryffindor common room – but it probably helped to heal his heart too. Finally, there was someone in his corner. Ok, that someone might not have been human or speak any English, but that shouldn’t mean we underestimate the effect he had on Sirius.

Crookshanks kept him company and defended him. In fact, he was so determined that Sirius was good that he threw himself in front of Harry’s wand to protect him. And when that didn’t work, he unleashed his claws to make sure his message really… sunk in. 

This caring nature extended beyond his buddy Sirius. When Harry and Hermione were being pummelled by the [Whomping Willow](/fact-file/plants-and-potions/the-whomping-willow), it was Crooskhanks that stepped in and stopped the tree from moving. When Sirius wanted to buy Harry a new Firebolt, it was Crookshanks that carried the order form for him. And despite being a highly intelligent half-cat, who was far above such childish things, he still allowed Hermione to tie some tinsel round his neck for a bit of Yuletide cheer.

Ultimately, Crookshanks was the GOAT of *Prisoner of Azkaban* – even Ron made his peace with the big, ginger furball in the end. Without him, Harry may never have discovered that Sirius was innocent, and Pettigrew may have stayed hidden for many more years. If we were being bold, we might say that his actions in this book made him our favourite wizarding pet – just don’t tell [Hedwig](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hedwig). Well, he was certainly a paw-sitive influence.

With his intelligence, fluffiness and habit of helping to expose Dark wizards, this moggie exhibited classic orange cat behaviour – while cementing his place as a wizarding world hero at the same time.

This is an anagram of ‘Je suis Voldemort’ and a fitting name for the wizard some might consider The Devil in Disguise.

In Spanish, ‘I am Lord Voldemort’ becomes ‘Soy Lord Voldemort’ with his name, Tom Sorvolo Ryddle, ending up sounding rather similar to the original English.

Voldemort has a rather romantic name in the Danish translation. Meet Romeo G. Detlev Jr (though this is where the similarities to Shakespeare’s tragic hero ends) which spells out ‘Jeg er Voldemort’. In a nod to the English version, Tom Riddle, the G. is short for Gåde, which means riddle.

The Italian version of Tom Riddle only includes a different middle name with ‘Sono Lord Voldemort’ being an anagram of Tom Orvoloson Riddle.

While all the other teachers had the usual responsibilities of lesson planning and marking, Sprout’s obligations went even further. She also had to plant, grow and nurture several greenhouses worth of magical plants. With specimens like the [Venomous Tentacula](/fact-file/plants-and-potions/venomous-tentacula), that had a poisonous bite and would try to strangle you at any given moment, it wasn’t a job for the fainthearted. 

If that wasn’t enough responsibility for one person, Sprout also worked hard to be an excellent Head of House – guiding, encouraging and helping those in her charge. In our view, if you were to look up ‘work ethic’ in a dictionary, you would see a picture of this industrious teacher.

## Patient
We think being a teacher – especially one in a magical school – takes a lot of patience. Unruly students, unruly plants and creatures… and even an unruly poltergeist is enough to make even the most serene person lose their cool. Luckily, Professor Sprout had oodles of patience. Incidentally, this is one trait that is common amongst those with a Taurus star sign.

Taureans are a fixed star sign – which means they will out-endure any obstacle. The astrologer Joanna Martine Woolfolk has even gone so far as to say that their patience is legendary. These folks are certainly not quick to anger.

This reminds us of Professor Sprout, who was always welcoming, understanding and we don’t recall her ever raising her voice. Just look at the way she gently brought [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) out of his shell. She patiently encouraged and supported him until he ended up truly excelling in her subject. In fact, he was so good at it, he eventually became the Hogwarts Herbology teacher!  Would he have achieved so much without Sprout’s understanding, kindness and tolerance? He might have… but we think she certainly helped. That patience went beyond Neville – Sprout extended it to all who crossed the threshold of her greenhouse.

## Loyal
Trustworthiness is something that is at the core of the Taurean personality. If you want someone you can rely on, who will remain true to those they care about, then we think it’s probably worth making a couple of Taurus friends.

And as the Head of House, whose key trait alongside hard work is loyalty, Professor Sprout demonstrated this perfectly. Sprout stayed behind to fight Voldemort and the [Death Eaters](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/death-eaters) in the Battle of Hogwarts. When Dumbledore died, she remained true to him and the future of the school when she said: ‘if a single pupil wants to come, then the school ought to remain open for that pupil’. And she also demonstrated loyalty to her house. When Cedric and Harry were both chosen to be the Hogwarts Champion for the [Triwizard Tournament](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/triwizard-tournament), she made it clear it was Cedric who had her full support. Who can really blame her? It was about time Hufflepuff had their moment in the spotlight!

## Pragmatic
According to astrologers, Taureans are earth signs making them grounded and down-to-earth. They focus on practical solutions and don’t spend their time on vague ideas. Incidentally, this tendency to want to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in makes them natural gardeners…

Now doesn’t that sound rather fitting for this Herbology teacher? Professor Sprout was straightforward and sensible. She got on with whatever needed to be done and didn’t make a fuss. Like the time a [Basilisk](/fact-file/creatures/basilisk) was causing havoc with the Hogwarts plumbing whilst Petrifying [Muggle-borns](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggle-borns) (plus one unfortunate cat and a ghost). Sprout sprang into action, growing and tending to a crop of Mandrakes that would later be used in the Restorative Draught to cure the victims. There was a problem that needed fixing, so she did just that.

## Strong values
As one of the zodiac signs that is ruled by the planet Venus, Taureans have strong sense of who they are, and their core values are unshakeable. Like their zodiac symbol, the bull, they stand strong in the face of adversity.

We think this is a trait can be applied to Professor Sprout. She might have been jovial and kind, but she also had a core of iron and a strong moral compass. While we know one of her key values was the loyalty she showed to Hogwarts and her house, her strong belief in doing what she thought was right is evident in some of the smaller moments too. Take the period of time when [Umbridge](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/dolores-umbridge) ruled the school. Sprout didn’t just toe the line, she made it clear that she was not on board with Umbridge’s vision. How did she do this? Well, there was the time she gave Harry a silly amount of house points for handing her a watering can… Which just so happened to be after his daring interview in [*The Quibbler*](/fact-file/objects/the-quibbler) that went against all of the lies Umbridge was spouting. A subtle act, but one that show her true values nonetheless.
