## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

In Harry Potter’s world, there’s Divination, Astronomy and prophecies – all used to make sense of the mysteries of the universe and the great beyond. But what about astrology? We know Professor Trelawney did touch upon it, but do any of our favourite characters happen to display personality traits that are unique to their star sign?

Well, we thought it would be fun to find out! As it is Aries season, we’re looking at our favourite pair of pranksters, Fred and George Weasley. Of course, any similarities may be a total coincidence. We’ll leave that up to you to decide. Why not share this with your Aries friends and see what they think?

## Driven
[Fred](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/fred-weasley) and [George](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/george-weasley), driven? The pair that permanently left Hogwarts on the back of two broomsticks before they hit their seventh year? The pair that left a swamp of chaos as their parting gift? Yep, those are the two we mean. We’ll happily tell you why…

Aries are known to be highly motivated individuals. They have an intense desire to succeed and hate to be bored. As such, they are confident ‘doers’ who believe in taking action and think they can achieve anything if they put their mind to it. That sounds an awful lot like Fred and George.

This was the pair who created a highly successful business during their time at school. Granted, it involved some product testing in the Gryffindor common room… and a few students may have suddenly transformed into canaries. However, there’s no doubt that Fred and George’s business became a major success. When Voldemort returned to power and other shops in Diagon Alley shut, they remained open and thriving. Amidst the dark they were a colourful beacon of joy, and it was only possible thanks to the Weasley twins’ hard work and innovation (plus Harry’s helpful investment).

## Positive outlook on life
The Weasley twins were not the ‘glass half-empty’ type. In fact, we would go so far as saying that they were natural optimists with a knack for finding the joy in the mundane. This is a common trait amongst those born under the Aries star sign… They go through life with unparalleled joie de vivre and a sense of optimism that others are drawn to.

Think back to the start of Deathly Hallows when Harry and the other seven Potters were attacked by a flock of [Death Eaters](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/death-eaters) and George lost his ear. Most people would obviously be devastated and would act that way. What did George do? The moment he woke up, he made a joke. He didn’t moan or complain – he just told Fred he felt ‘saint-like’ thanks to the fact he was now ‘holey’. It might not have been his best joke (in his defence he had literally just been unconscious) … but it does speak to his unwavering positive attitude.

## Confident
Aries are the first sign of the zodiac and as such they demonstrate the confidence and self-assuredness that an alpha of a pack should have. People have even questioned whether this star sign can be too confident. We think this self-belief is a trait you can see in Fred and George. As Ginny Weasley pointed out, growing up with the twins meant ‘that you sort of start thinking anything’s possible if you’ve got enough nerve.’

Fred and George certainly seemed to live by that motto. For example, do you recall when Fred asked [Angelina Johnson](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/angelina-johnson) to the Yule Ball like it was no big deal? Ron and Harry had been panicking about dates for weeks and he made it look so easy! Then there was the confidence both twins had when placing a bet with [Ludo Bagman](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ludo-bagman). When he didn’t pay up they were unafraid to chase him – despite the fact he was a head of a Ministry department. And who could forget their total conviction that they had managed to come up with a plan to fool the Age Line around the Goblet of Fire? Fred and George were certainly no wallflowers and quite frankly, their confidence was something to be admired.

## Competitive 
One thing you will notice about your Aries friends, is that they love to win. Whether you’re playing a game of monopoly or participating in a pub quiz, they just have to be number one. This is partly because they are one of the fire signs, who are known to be passionate, assertive and competitive.

We think you can see this streak in Fred and George. Yes, they were the class clowns who lived for fun, but just wait until you saw them on the [Quidditch pitch](/fact-file/locations/quidditch-pitch). There they were two talented Beaters who would fight tooth and nail for [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) victory. They might have rolled their eyes at Oliver Wood’s pep talks but they took this game seriously. Remember when they found out that Harry was the new Seeker on the Gryffindor team? They were so excited to have a fresh chance at winning the Quidditch Cup… and were probably quite excited at the thought of beating Slytherin too.

## Strong sense of adventure
Those who fall under the Aries zodiac sign are known to be the adventurous type – particularly if that adventure involves a little frisson of danger. For an Aries, staying at home and doing nothing is their worst nightmare. So, why not follow their impulses? Fred and George certainly did. Like others with this star sign, they were both spontaneous, fun and would never allow themselves to be bored.

You could say that they were two of the most mischievous students to ever walk the halls of Hogwarts! Can you imagine them flying under the radar and seeking an easy life? No? Us neither. Whether they were setting off fireworks to rattle Umbridge, using the [Marauder’s Map](/fact-file/objects/the-marauders-map) to sneak out of school or doing anything that made [Filch](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/argus-filch) a quivering ball of rage, they were always on the lookout for that new and exciting escapade.

## A professor with a secret Quidditch past
Our first Easter egg involves a professor with a Quidditch past that she kept under wraps… Yes! [Professor McGonagall](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/minerva-mcgonagall) was also a Quidditch Champion during her time at school. In *Philosopher’s Stone*, if you look closely at the trophy case, you’ll spot McGonagall’s name alongside James Potter’s. Although McGonagall gave up Quidditch after leaving Hogwarts, she never lost her passion for it – keeping an eye out for fresh new talent – like Harry!

## A special appearance on the Marauder’s Map
In *Prisoner of Azkaban*, there was one unexpected name that appeared on the [Marauder’s Map](/fact-file/objects/the-marauders-map). They’re not a student or a professor… but its someone from the wizarding world that we all know well – [Newt Scamander](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/newt-scamander)! Blink and you’ll miss this famous Magizoologist. Was he visiting Dumbledore? Did the map make a mistake? We’ll never know for sure… but it is fun to guess!

## Dragon safety is taken very seriously
In *Goblet of Fire*, it’s the dragons that take centre stage. Some might argue they’re the real stars – what with all the dramatic fire breathing, fabulous flying and their all-round excellent performances. With that in mind, we’re glad to see that they were treated well during filming… if the end credits are anything to go by. If you watch carefully, you might just spot this disclaimer ‘No dragons were harmed in the making of this movie’.

## An interesting code…
When Harry visited the [Ministry of Magic](/fact-file/locations/the-ministry-of-magic), he entered a code to access the building. You’d be forgiven for thinking that it was just a random collection of numbers, but it wasn’t. Turns out that the access code spells ‘magic’ – pretty apt for a Ministry that is all about, well, magic.

## Harry's Quidditch number… 
The number seven holds a lot of weight in the Harry Potter stories – seven books, seven years at Hogwarts, seven Potters leaving [Privet Drive](/fact-file/locations/number-four-privet-drive) and even seven Horcruxes. So, Harry’s Quidditch jersey being the number seven was a nice little Easter egg… Incidentally, there are also seven members of a Quidditch team – it’s everywhere!

## Who am I?
*Chamber of Secrets* was the only Harry Potter film to have a sneaky post-credit scene – did you see it? It gave a hint about Lockhart’s fate after his run-in with his own backfiring Memory Charm. True to [Lockhart](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/gilderoy-lockhart) form, he appeared to have written yet *another* book – maybe this one will actually be about him!

## Always 
This is one to tug at your heartstrings. We found out in *Deathly Hallows* that Snape had always loved Lily. However, this important nugget of information was teased as far back as *Philosopher’s Stone*, when he asked Harry what he would get if he added ‘powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood.’ But how does this foreshadow his love for Lily? Well, an asphodel is a type of lily and means ‘remembered beyond the tomb’ or ‘my regrets follow you to the grave’. Wormwood is a flower that symbolises sorrow or regret… Put them together and you could say that Snape was telling Harry how much he bitterly regretted Lily’s death.

## Forgetting something Neville?
Oh Neville – he would forget his own head if it wasn’t attached to his body! Fortunately, his Gran tried to remedy that by sending him a Remembrall in *Philosopher’s Stone*. Unfortunately, when Neville was showing it off, it turned red to signal he had forgotten something – but what could it be? Now, we think we might have figured it out. In that scene, you’ll see that every student was wearing their robes… except for one. And yes, it was Neville. Could this be what the Remembrall was desperately trying to remind him of?

## Everything about Lockhart is fake 
Turns out that the five-time winner of *Witch Weekly’s* Most-Charming-Smile Award was a great big fraud. Lockhart wasn’t the grand adventurer he made out to be. He didn’t go *Gadding with Ghouls* or on *Voyages with Vampires*. The only talent he had was for stealing people’s stories and erasing their memories. In fact, he was such a big liar – even his hair was fake! When trying to make a quick escape from Hogwarts, Lockhart was seen to be packing a wig – we knew those lustrous golden curls were too good to be true.

## House colours
Did you know that each house is loosely connected to one of the four elements? And the house colours represent that? If you did, bravo! Let’s explore a little further…

__Hufflepuff yellow and black__

For a house full of students that are loyal and unafraid of toil, it makes sense that the element associated with Hufflepuff is earth. Specifically, the yellow is supposed to represent wheat and the black represents soil. And when you think of the grounded and down-to-earth characters who are members of this house – like Professor Sprout and the ever-humble Cedric Diggory – it’s a perfect fit.

Hufflepuff’s house founder, Helga Hufflepuff, was also down-to-earth and was even known for her culinary talents, adding to this house’s homely vibe. Many of her recipes inspired the meals of the Hogwarts kitchens.  

Interestingly, the colour yellow has ties to friendship and joy. Typically, you would present someone with a bunch of yellow roses to signify this relationship. In our view, loyalty (one of Hufflepuff’s key traits) and friendship go hand in hand, reinforcing just how well this colour suits this house. 

__Ravenclaw blue and bronze__

As we all know, Ravenclaw is the house known for its wit and love of learning – making it the home of the dreamers, the visionaries and those with their heads in the clouds. We doubt it’ll come as a surprise, then, to know that Ravenclaw’s element is air. Once again, this is reflected in its colours with J.K. Rowling confirming that the blue was for the sky and bronze for eagle feathers.

Furthermore, the colour blue is often associated with wisdom and studies have shown that being surrounded by this colour can even stimulate people’s creativity and productivity. With a house known to turn out inventors and great thinkers… need we say more?

__Slytherin green and silver__

The element that Slytherin is connected to is water which is why its house colours are green and silver. Knowing that, it seems fitting that their common room is found below the lake at Hogwarts. 

However, the colour green has further meaning in the wizarding world, as it also represents Dark magic, such as the emerald stars that compose Voldemort’s Dark Mark. Now, we must stress that Dark magic isn’t the only thing this colour denotes – especially when there are plenty of Slytherins who aren’t tempted down that Dark road. It is also a colour that has long represented the supernatural in the UK. In the wizarding world, it is often used by witches and wizards (alongside purple) to reveal their magical status. Much like this house, the colour green is multifaceted with a complex reputation.

__Gryffindor red and gold__

Finally, we have Gryffindor, which is represented by the colours red and gold. You can probably make an educated guess as to which element is tied to this house… fire! With a house full of passionate and bold witches and wizards, an element as vivid as fire suits it well… especially with the number of flame haired Weasley’s amongst its ranks. Outside of the wizarding world, the colour red is often associated with confidence and energy, only compounding this further.

Fun fact, did you know that certain Gryffindor’s name means red? Yep! Hagrid’s first name, Rubeus, means red too! It comes from the Latin ‘rubeo’ which means ‘red’ or ‘ruddy’. He’s a Gryffindor through and through.

## House animals
If you have looked at the Hogwarts crest, you’ll have spotted four animals. Each of these animals symbolises a different house. But what could they mean?

__The Gryffindor lion__

Often referred to as ‘the king of the jungle’, Gryffindor is represented by a lion. As the house where ‘dwell the brave at heart’, it makes sense for such a noble creature to represent it… Especially as lions have a reputation for being daring and brave. There are plenty of examples in popular culture that reinforce this – from children’s books to The Wizard of Oz, where one lion realised he was braver than he knew… just like one of our favourite members of this house, Neville Longbottom!

__The Slytherin serpent__

Next, we have the slithering serpent of Slytherin. A very apt symbol for the house founded by a man who could not only talk to snakes but kept a giant one in a secret chamber beneath the school. Outside of the wizarding world, the snake often represents cunning – a trait which is very much part of the Slytherin identity. For example, as part of the Chinese zodiac, those born in the year of the snake are known to be calculating, clever and curious too.

__The Ravenclaw eagle__

That’s right! The animal that represents Ravenclaw in the books is not a raven but a majestic eagle. When you think about how this house is tied to the element air, a bird that soars through the sky is symbolically appropriate. Outside of the wizarding world, the eagle has ties to Norse mythology. It is closely linked to the god Odin and represents wisdom and light. Again, a fitting symbol for a house whose founder’s motto was ‘wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure’.

Last but by no means least, we have Hufflepuff’s animal – the badger. Considering that a badger is an animal which spends a lot of time underground and amongst the earth, it suits the house whose element is also earth. In fact, the Hufflepuff common room is reminiscent of a badger sett. This cosy room is partially underground, with low-ceilings and round windows that are level with the earth, giving Hufflepuff students an excellent view of rolling grass and dandelions.
