## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

## Narcissa Malfoy: Be willing to take risks for your child
‘Why on earth would we want to take parenting advice from a Malfoy?’ you might ask… And you would be right to be sceptical. [Narcissa Malfoy](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/narcissa-malfoy) was in league with [Death Eaters](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/death-eaters) (even marrying one), appeared to support Voldemort’s insidious views and had her snootiness down to a fine art. Taking tips from someone so morally dubious seems a ridiculous thing to do but bear with us – we do think there is one bit of wisdom Narcissa would impart.

That piece of wisdom is… your child comes before anything and everyone else. Your son is recruited to be a Death Eater? Make an Unbreakable Vow with his Head of House to ensure his protection. You don’t know where your son is as a battle rages? Risk your life by lying to one of the most powerful wizards of all time – just so you can go and find him. The battle isn’t over and your son is still in danger? Abandon everyone and everything else and protect him at all costs by leaving. Narcissa may have been flawed, but being a mother meant everything to her.

## Andromeda Tonks: It’s important to stay true to yourself
Growing up in a family where you don’t fit in must be tough – especially if that family is a Dark-magic loving, Muggle-hating clan of [pure-blood](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/pure-blood) fanatics. Yet, that was Andromeda Tonks’ reality. However, instead of caving in and pretending to support their worldview for an easy life, Andromeda stood up to them. She stuck by her beliefs, married Muggle-born Ted Tonks and was cast out as a result. Would she do it again? We think she would. 

In fact, we think this would be her piece of parenting advice. Stay true to what you believe in – even if it’s not always easy. You will regret giving in to keep the peace and will only find true happiness (like Andromeda did with her husband Ted and daughter Nymphadora) once you ignore what others expect of you and embrace who you truly are.

## Lily Potter: Love is the most important thing 
We think [Lily Potter’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lily-potter) advice would be short and sweet… Love is what matters most. 

Lily may not have been able to be there for [Harry](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) as he grew up, but he never had any reason to doubt that she loved him. In fact, she loved him so much she sacrificed herself to save him from Voldemort. And the power of that sacrifice granted Harry a protection that lasted until he came of age. 

So even when your child is acting up – whether that’s by crashing a [flying car](/fact-file/objects/the-flying-car) into a very important (and very violent) tree… or something less dramatic – take a deep breath. You’re not making a mess of this whole parenting thing. Your love will give them that strong foundation they need, and everything will work out in the end… as long as they avoid flying cars.

## Molly Weasley: Be willing to open your heart to anyone who needs a mum
If there’s one wizarding world mum that we think would be full of excellent advice, it’s [Molly Weasley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/molly-weasley). Not only did she raise seven wonderful (even [Percy](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/percy-weasley)) children, she also was willing to open her heart to those who needed a mother figure in their life. Case in point? Harry Potter. 

Here was one child neglected, abandoned and with no solid, adult presence in his life. And that was something that Molly wouldn’t stand for. As soon as she met him, she accepted him into her family – no questions asked. The watch she gave him for his seventeenth birthday and the way she openly claimed him as one of her own only solidified this. 

So, we think Molly would say that in this world there is enough love for everyone. And as a mother, it doesn’t hurt to reach your hand out to someone who needs one – that’s what being a mum means.

## Petunia Dursley: Make sure you always buy enough birthday presents for your child
Now, we know that [Petunia Dursley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/petunia-dursley) was about as pleasant as a kiss from a [Dementor](/fact-file/creatures/dementor), but if we were to take parenting tips from her (huge emphasis on the *if*), then we think it would look a little something like this…

If you bought your child 37 presents for their birthday last year, then make sure you don’t make the mistake of *only* getting them 36 this year. Not only will you completely ruin your darling Diddykins’ birthday, but you will have to buy them at least two more presents to make up for your terrible – and we mean truly heinous – lack of judgement. 

Well… we didn’t say it was *good* advice.

## One more from Molly: Don’t forget the importance of food 
One final piece of advice that we think one of the greatest mothers in the wizarding world would like to impart is this… Never leave home on an empty stomach. 

Ron may have rejected Molly’s homemade corned beef sandwiches, but this witch was a whiz in the kitchen and ensured that every person at [The Burrow](/fact-file/locations/the-burrow) was always well-fed. With half-a-dozen bacon sandwiches as a standard breakfast… this is one bit of advice we will happily gobble up.

Every time Severus Snape reminded us of Capricorn energy

In Harry Potter there’s Divination, astronomy and prophecies – all used to make sense of the mysteries of the universe and the great beyond. But what about astrology? It’s barely mentioned… but do any of our favourite characters happen to display personality traits that are unique to their star sign?

Well, we thought it would be fun to find out! As it is Capricorn season, we’re starting with the surly Head of Slytherin, Snape. Of course, any similarities may be a total coincidence. Or they might not! We'll leave that up to you to decide. Why not share this with your Capricorn friends and see what they think?

## Shrewd and ambitious
According to horoscope experts, Capricorns are one of the ‘Earth signs’, but how does that apply to our haughty Head of Slytherin? You’d hardly call Snape’s personality ‘earthy’, but thankfully, that’s not what we mean. 

As Earth signs, Capricorns are known to be rather astute and determined. They know what they want, and they go for it. Looking back, Snape showed flashes of this characteristic throughout the story, especially when it came to wanting the [Defence Against the Dark Arts](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/defence-against-the-dark-arts) post. Dumbledore refused to give him the job year after year. But Snape would not let that deter him. He kept his hat in the ring – acting as a substitute when Lupin was indisposed and finally achieving his goal in the *Half-Blood Prince*. Whether he was a good Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher (with his *unique* treatment of those who did not belong to his house) is another question – but you can’t fault his ambition.

As for his shrewdness? Behind his scornful stare and snarling sneer, [Snape](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/severus-snape) could be rather perceptive. It was he who figured out what Quirrell was up to. He who tracked Sirius and Lupin to the Shrieking Shack. And he always seemed to have a sixth sense for when Harry, Ron and Hermione were getting up to mischief… It was just a shame Snape had to mix his shrewdness with rudeness!

## Hardworking and high achieving
According to the astrologer, Joanna Martine Woolfolk, Capricorns are notable for their practical intelligence and hardworking natures – and although Snape was crochety, he was also smart and driven.

Alongside his responsibility as Head of [Slytherin](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/slytherin) house, he was also Potions Master and spy extraordinaire for [Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore). Need further proof? Well, just think about his time at school when he created his entire Half-Blood Prince identity. Not only did he figure out how to tweak potion recipes to make them more potent, but he managed to create his own spells from scratch. Granted, some of those spells were violent and destructive, but it’s still impressive and a sign of a brilliant (if morally grey) mind.

## Independent
One trait shared by Capricorns is their independence – they don’t need to rely on anyone but themselves. When you look at their other personality traits such as practicality and responsibility this makes a lot of sense, they have the skills to be successful on their own. And this independence was reflected in the surly [Potions](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/potions) Master too. He was a bit of a lone wolf – he had to be. If your life is full of spying and secrets, then trusting others becomes a matter of life and death. It’s much easier to put your faith in yourself. 

Being a skilled [Occlumens](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/occlumency) helped, as Snape could keep his mind locked away from prying eyes. There was nobody who could break in there and see his deepest fears… except the time that Harry did. But on the whole, Snape was an island – fiercely independent, self-sufficient and rather mysterious.

## Zero tolerance
Snape was not the sort of person to forgive and forget quickly. Like other Capricorns, if Snape felt mocked or undermined, he held onto that grudge tighter than a [Niffler](/fact-file/creatures/niffler) grasping a Galleon. The fact he hated Harry on sight was *because* of the years-long simmering loathing he felt for [James Potter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/james-potter) and friends. And to be fair to Snape, they weren’t exactly kind to him. They did magically hoist him up by his ankles, call him names like ‘Snivellus’ and humiliate him in front of the school and the witch he fancied. We can understand why that particular feud was hard for Snape to let go of.

However, that did not give Snape free reign to be as awful as possible to Harry. He was the grown-up and should have been able to separate the Harry in front of him from the memory of James. Yet, he didn’t. He allowed those wounds to fester and influence his behaviour – upholding that decades long resentment… which can be quite a classic Capricorn thing to do.

## Loyal
If there is one thing you can pride a Capricorn on, it’s their loyalty to their small but carefully chosen group of friends. They would do anything for them, yet can we really call Snape loyal? Well, on the surface Snape might seem rather untrustworthy – playing the double-agent, switching sides as he pleased, his fondness for Dark magic and his general ‘don’t come anywhere near me’ vibe. But like other Capricorns, we think that if you look beneath the surface, you’ll find plenty of examples of Snape’s loyalty. The biggest one? Two words: Lily Potter. 

Snape’s love for [Lily](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lily-potter) was unending – even in death (his [Patronus](/fact-file/spells/the-patronus-charm) truly showed that). And that infatuation, despite a few early wobbles, demonstrated Snape’s ability to be loyal. Not only did Snape risk his life on a daily basis by turning against Lord Voldemort, but he protected Harry despite his hatred for him (and the father he so resembled). Even Dumbledore grew to trust him because of this love. While Capricorns can be stubborn or sometimes lofty, just like Severus Snape, it is the loyalty and that staunchly resolute nature that shines through.
