## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

## If you are known for being a bit of a grouch… you are like a Hungarian Horntail
[Hungarian Horntails](/fact-file/creatures/hungarian-horntail) are known for their sunny dispositions and reasonable tempers… If by sunny disposition, we mean extremely grumpy and by reasonable temper we mean happy to watch the world burn. As probably the most dangerous dragon in the wizarding world, Horntails can shoot fire up to fifty feet and have tail spikes that can take you out with a single swipe (it’s a miracle Harry survived the first [Triwizard](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/triwizard-tournament) task). Now, we’re not saying that you are prone to breathing fire but maybe you’ve been known to wake up on the wrong side of the bed every now and then. Perhaps you’re someone who doesn’t do mornings and should be avoided until you’ve had your first cup of tea. Or maybe you’re just a bit crotchety because you’re hungry. Whatever it is that bugs you, you’re not alone, as we can all act like a bit of a Hungarian Horntail in the right – or wrong – circumstances.

## If you love the goth aesthetic… you are most like a Hebridean Black
If you were to look in your wardrobe right now, would you be greeted with a sea of black? Have people been known to subtly avoid you because they’re slightly scared of your spooky vibe? Is your love of black nail varnish most definitely *not* a phase – despite what your mum says? Then we think you’d relate to the [Hebridean Black](/fact-file/creatures/hebridean-black). Just like you, this dragon is a bit, ok – a lot, of a goth. With their spikes, bat-like wings and purple eyes, you’ll probably find one in the midst of an existential crisis listening to music which sounds like a thousand banshees wailing. Alright, we’re kidding – they might not be doing that, but they certainly do like their own space – up to one hundred square miles per dragon in fact. They also aren’t that big on chowing down on humans – preferring deer (with the odd dog or cow), which, comparatively speaking, doesn’t make them as lethal as some of their dragon peers. 

This dragon, much like you, asks you not to judge a book by its cover. You might have an exterior as tough as this dragon’s scales, but underneath you’re as warm and fuzzy as a Pygmy Puff (if Pygmy Puffs wore a *lot* of eyeliner).

## If you are all about glamour… you are most like an Antipodean Opaleye
When it comes to good-looking dragons, you need look no further than the [Antipodean Opaleye](/fact-file/creatures/antipodean-opaleye). With its iridescent, pearly scales and eyes that glitter with a multitude of colours, this dragon is stunning. And if you have a similar energy, that sentiment would extend to you. We imagine that you are somebody that always look flawless, from your hair to your shoes. We can even picture you, adorned in sparkly accessories and statement necklaces (and possibly even a tiara or two). Just like this dragon with its vivid scarlet flame, you love a pop of colour, and are unafraid to stand out in a crowd. All dragons are fierce, naturally. But you’re fierce in the best possible way.

## If you are laidback… then you’re like a Common Welsh Green
Dragons can be laidback? Well… to a degree. Out of all the dragons in the wizarding world, we would say the [Common Welsh Green](/fact-file/creatures/common-welsh-green) is the most chilled. Rather than feasting on people, which they actively avoid (understandable really), they prefer the succulent flavour of sheep. While that’s bad news for our woolly companions, it’s pretty good for us. This dragon is also known for its melodious roar. In all honesty, we like to pretend that the Welsh Green is just spreading good vibes, probably up a mountain, enjoying its own company, eating a leg of chargrilled mutton and singing its favourite tunes. If that sounds delightful (with or without the side of sheep), then we think you would relate to this dragon the most. You’re probably the type of person who avoids confrontation, is happy doing their own thing and are not known for being particularly highly-strung. You like to keep things groovy and are happy living life in the slow lane.

## If you are small but mighty… they you’re like the Peruvian Vipertooth
The [Peruvian Vipertooth](/fact-file/creatures/peruvian-vipertooth) might be the smallest dragon that you find in the wizarding world, but you would be a fool to assume that makes it less deadly than its other, larger kin. In fact, this copper-coloured dragon loves nothing more than to munch on a human or two as a light snack: lovely. Did we mention that its bite is also particularly venomous (just to add to its warm and fuzzy image)? If you’ve been underestimated because of how you look, then we think your energy is like this venomous Vipertooth. For example, you might look young for your age and have found it difficult to be taken seriously. Or you might be petite, and people assume that means you’re not strong enough to lift those weights at the gym. However, you have been underestimated and we’re sure the people responsible soon regretted it. Like the Peruvian Vipertooth, you might be small, but you are mighty – with an acid tongue, no nonsense attitude and a glare that would make the toughest dragons tremble.

## The case for Hogwarts
Oh, this is *such* an easy one – Christmas is best spent at [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts). Disagree? You would be wrong. Case closed. 

Ok, we can go into more detail – we just love a bit of Hogwarts Christmas holiday fun! Let’s start with the way the castle is transformed into a gorgeous wintry wonderland. Suits of armour singing Christmas carols – festive. Twelve giant, frost-covered Christmas trees lining the [Great Hall](/fact-file/locations/the-great-hall) – even more festive. The Great Hall adorned with streamers of holly and mistletoe and enchanted snow falling warm and dry from the ceiling – festive with a capital F – the most festively festive festivities we could ever dream of. The decorations alone are enough to make you feel as Christmassy as the fabulous gnome atop the Weasley’s Christmas tree.

But that’s not all, let’s talk about the feast. We all know that Christmas is all about the food (and spending time with your loved ones and so on… but mainly food). And at Hogwarts, this is a feast more magical than anywhere else in the wizarding world. There are no skirmishes over the last roast potato here – with a hundred fat turkeys, piles of roast and boiled potatoes, platters of chipolatas, buttered peas, gravy, cranberry sauce and flaming Christmas puddings (our mouths are watering just thinking about it) there’s enough to feed even the hungriest giant… or Ron. 

Crackers! We almost forgot. You won’t find Christmas crackers like these in the Muggle world. Rather than a flimsy paper hat and rubbish toy, these crackers contain everything from live mice to an Admiral’s hat – Dumbledore even got a wonderful, flowered bonnet (which he immediately wore, of course). 

Still need convincing? Right then, rather than having to wait until your entire family are ready to open presents, yours will appear at the end of your bed for you to open at *your* leisure. Then there’s the fact you can spend Christmas having snowball fights with your best friends (like Harry did with the Weasleys) rather than having awkward conversation with boring relatives. No Aunt Muriel here, thankfully. Most importantly, everything is just there ready and waiting for you to enjoy. There will be no need to help prepare dinner, do the washing up or, the task more horrifying than facing a [Dementor](/fact-file/creatures/dementor) down a dark alley, peel the sprouts. 

Unlike The Burrow – where we know that chores are required and unwelcome guests pop up (like a certain Minister for Magic or estranged brother), or Grimmauld Place – gloomy, with shrieking portraits and a serious lack of Christmas spirit, Hogwarts is *the* place to have the perfect festive day – just the way *you* want it.

## The case for The Burrow
No thanks, McGonagall, we won’t be putting our names down to stay at *school* for the holiday – we’re heading back to [The Burrow](/fact-file/locations/the-burrow). This charmingly crooked and cosy Christmas ornament of a family home, with its snow-dusted stack of rooms like the pieces of a gingerbread house, is so wrong that it’s just so right. After the draughty castle corridors and airy halls of Hogwarts, The Burrow’s leaning walls and low ceilings are a warm hug welcoming you home.

And that’s just the wacky architecture! Don’t get us started on the decorations. Sure, Hogwarts’ Great Hall is decked so lavishly, but it’s all done for you. Are Christmas decorations really Christmas decorations unless you can see your own hand in them? Unless you strung the paper chains yourself, hung the baubles yourself, Stupefied the garden [gnome](/fact-file/creatures/gnome), and glued wings to its back and stuck it atop the tree yourself, it’s not really Christmas. Like a Weasley jumper, Christmas at The Burrow is everything it should be – homemade and perfectly imperfect. 

Now, a moment for the food. Whether it’s in the kitchen or duelling with Death Eaters, [Molly](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/molly-weasley) and her wand are undefeated. With seven children to feed and her door always open to guests, she can whip up a festive feast that the Great Hall tables would positively groan under the weight of. And yeah, you have to peel a mountain of sprouts to help out, but as Fred says – it’s “character-building”. Harry’s first Christmas lunch at The Burrow may have been interrupted by the distinctly un-Christmassy Scrimgeour, but that’s got to be better than dining with Trelawney and being told you’re going to die before you’ve even finished your roasties, right? 

But the best thing about any Christmas dinner, is what comes after. No, not dessert – the turkey-induced nap, of course! Can you imagine climbing seven flights of changing staircases with missing steps and crawling through a portrait hole just to have an after-dinner lie-down? The Burrow offers the prospect of a short stumble to a squishy sofa and Celestina Warbeck’s *A Cauldron Full of Hot, Strong Love* playing on the wireless as you succumb to a snooze.

After spending Christmas breaks researching in the library, drinking [Polyjuice Potion](/fact-file/plants-and-potions/polyjuice-potion), navigating the teenage trauma of a first school dance and spending the day on a closed St Mungo’s hospital ward, Harry’s sixth year was a Christmas wish come true – finally, a real family Christmas. And what a family! To be invited to a Weasley Christmas is to be given the gift of a loving community to spend the holiday with, and all the laughter, rows and madness that comes with it. In its grandness, Hogwarts can be a lonely place and signing up to stay there was usually because Harry had no other choice. But in The Burrow’s cosiness, where siblings and guests sleep at least three to a room, you can never really find yourself alone or bored.

The Weasleys’ Gringotts vault may be bare, but their home is abundant with joy. Though we’re debating the ultimate wizarding world Christmas location, the real magic of Christmas isn’t carolling suits of armour and enchanted snow. The Burrow is packed full of everything for a *truly* magical Christmas – togetherness, love and family.

## The case for 12 Grimmauld Place 
That’s right, you heard. Sure, the *obvious* choice for a magical Christmas getaway may be lovely old Hogwarts or the warm family atmosphere of The Burrow, but we’re going rogue. [Grimmauld Place](/fact-file/locations/number-twelve-grimmauld-place) is actually the best place to celebrate Christmas. What do you *mean*, what are we talking about?! We think you’ll find 12 Grimmauld Place is actually crammed with festive magic! And, sure, also Doxys and Boggarts and screaming paintings. But that’s just all part of the unpredictable fun! And isn’t that what Christmas is all about? Cleaning all the Dark secrets out of an ancient, decrepit house, hoping you don’t bump into a sinister house-elf who carries a lot of Dark energy? Except maybe in your household, it’s your tipsy uncle. Same difference! It wouldn’t be Christmas without someone causing mayhem in the corner somewhere, would it? 

So, Harry spends Christmas at 12 Grimmauld Place, [Sirius Black’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sirius-black) inherited family home, for distinctly un-festive reasons. Amid Lord Voldemort’s ascent to power, Arthur Weasley has been attacked, and the family must spend Christmas in the safety of the Order of the Phoenix headquarters while they await news. Okay, yep, understood, not very Christmassy so far. But once we hear of Arthur’s recovery, things take an upward swing. And with Mrs Weasley around – no place – no matter how dank and abandoned, carrying the evils of Dark wizards and witches of the past – will be left looking unhomely for very long. With Molly at the helm, 12 Grimmauld Place was soon transformed from The House of Black into The House of Snacks – and that’s not all: at the thought of having *company* for Christmastime, Sirius is turned into a new man – singing Christmas carols, cooking bacon and generally, just seeming… *happy*.

Wouldn’t you love to be tucking into a mince pie while the coolest Marauder sang God Rest Ye Merry Hippogriffs in the background? Of course, you would! And by the time Sirius is done decorating the house (with chandeliers festooned with holly and gold and silver streamers, you guys!) the place is described as “almost unrecognisable”. Almost unrecognisable! Mundungus Fletcher even obtains* (* probably stole) a Christmas tree with live fairies! The carpets are covered in glittery snow! The stuffed house-elf heads mounted on the wall are wearing Christmas ha-oh okay, maybe let’s skip over that last one. But nonetheless! With the newfound Yuletide joy of Sirius jazzing up the household, 12 Grimmauld Place is sounding like *quite* the hip, happening holiday venue, complete with rustic charm. 

*And* being at the headquarters of the [Order of the Phoenix](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/order-of-the-phoenix) means you get all manner of awesome Aurors sporadically popping round too – the more, the merrier. And this means the most important thing of all: extra presents. Tonks gets Harry a cute little flying model of his Firebolt – that’s a *great* gift. Nope, we’re standing firm on this one – 12 Grimmauld Place is an underrated Christmas classic – with interesting visitors, bespoke Christmas carols and the distinct lack of Professor Umbridge, who had ruined the vibe at Hogwarts in Harry’s fifth year anyway. We rest our case!

## Percy
In last place we have, regrettably, [Percy Weasley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/percy-weasley). And if you can’t fathom why we have placed him bottom of this list, let us refresh your memory. Percy had no trouble trampling his family to climb the career ladder. He chose the [Ministry](/fact-file/locations/the-ministry-of-magic) and the lies they peddled over his family causing them (especially his mum) great pain. We’re also still salty about him deducting house points from Ron – who does that to their brother? Our biggest reason though? His pomposity. Yeah, we have to say it, Percy Weasley was on a high horse for the majority of the book series. Even if he was just assessing cauldron bottoms, he did it with the energy of a man who was on the cusp of becoming Minister for Magic. However, before any hardcore Percy fans become totally incandescent with rage over our decision, we do have caveats. Firstly, Percy did return to his family and admit his mistakes which can’t have been easy (especially with Fred and George around to give him stick). Secondly, he was still a Weasley in his soul – and even cracked a joke once or twice. But somebody had to be bottom of the list… sorry folks.

## Charlie
Next, we have the second-eldest sibling, [Charlie](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/charlie-weasley). Now, the only reason we have put him so close to the bottom is that we don’t really know much about him. As he worked abroad, he felt like the most absent (aside from Percy’s estrangement) member of the family. Yet, what we do know about him is very cool. Or, given the circumstances, should that be the opposite of cool? One word, dragons. Yep, Charlie’s life revolved around taking care of these fiery creatures in Romania. And that alone is enough to make sure he is not at the bottom of this list. Oh, there’s also his involvement with the [Order of the Phoenix](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/order-of-the-phoenix), fighting the Battle of Hogwarts, being Gryffindor’s Quidditch Captain back in his day and so on… but did we mention? Dragons!!!

The eldest Weasley sibling was the epitome of cool older brother with his ponytail, fang earring and his rockstar fashion choices. And while Mrs Weasley was constantly horrified by his look (‘what do they say at the bank?!’) his laissez-faire style caught the attention of his future wife, [Fleur Delacour](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/fleur-delacour).  If that wasn’t enough to convince you that he was the bee’s knees, did you know that he worked as a curse-breaker for Gringotts? Deep in the pyramids of Egypt, no less, which is far more exciting than assessing cauldron bottom safety (again, with apologies to Percy). He was also smart, Head Boy at Hogwarts and fought in the war against Voldemort. So why is he in the middle of our list? Well, do you not think that maybe he was a little *too* perfect? It would probably be quite intimidating (and irritating) to be around someone who was always brilliant at everything they did. Petty of us? Maybe. Are we above such pettiness? Clearly not.  And again, sadly, we just don’t know as much about Bill as we’d like to – just that his reputation seems to precede him. As such, we think a middle spot works well.

## Fred and George
Ok, ok, we know that twins are probably fed up with always being lumped together as one entity… but heed our words. It’s hard enough ranking one of the most beloved wizarding families as it is. Having to decide whether Gred is better than Forge — sorry, if [*Fred*](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/fred-weasley) is better than [*George*](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/george-weasley) — is giving us a stress headache. As a pair, these two were hilarious pranksters with hearts of gold (Argus Filch would have different notes). They might have consistently caused complete chaos, but they brought a lot of laughter and happiness too – especially with Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes. They weren’t just jokesters either – there was kindness to some of their mischievous deeds, such as passing on a downtrodden Harry the Marauder’s Map when he really needed it. Why aren’t they right at the top of our list then? Because as fun as they are, you would constantly be on red alert in their company. Imagine having to analyse every biscuit you dunked in your tea just in case you suddenly turned into a canary. Exhausting.

## Ginny 
Fierce, talented and smart – it’s no wonder Harry Potter fell head-over-heels for [Ginny Weasley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ginny-weasley) (once she could speak to him without blushing, of course). On its own, her skill with the [Bat-Bogey Hex](/fact-file/spells/the-bat-bogey-hex) is enough to secure her a spot high up on our list. That’s before we even mention the breaking into the Weasley broom shed to practice Quidditch. Or her sass – especially when it came to a certain rumoured tattoo of Harry’s. Or her bravery – let’s not forget she managed to overcome being possessed by Voldemort at a young age. Once she had found her voice Ginny was unstoppable. She said it best herself: ‘you start thinking anything’s possible if you’ve got enough nerve’. That’s an excellent philosophy to live by and the reason we think she deserves second place. Which means…

## Ron
In first place, it has to be our maroon-wearing, corned-beef sandwich eating, slug-vomiting [Ron](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ron-weasley). We don’t even think you need us to explain why, but we will anyway because it’s fun. So, Ron Weasley helped save the wizarding world and willingly risked his life to defeat Voldemort – love that. He was with Harry from the very start to the very end – aside from one or two wobbles we won’t hold against him (and Hermione already told him off for us.). He would readily stand up for his friends (nobody was allowed to call Hermione a know-it-all except him!) and sometimes, *he* was the hero of the story – take his iconic role in the *Philosopher’s Stone* chess match. He was also a character that went through a lot of personal growth – from the insecure boy on the Hogwarts Express with his corned beef sandwiches to the young man who got over his insecurities to destroy a Horcrux. And outside of all of that – this is the person who once uttered the phrase: ‘Merlin’s most-baggy Y-fronts’. Case closed.
