## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

## The Ministry of Magic vs Albus Dumbledore

*‘Dumbledore’s name is mud with the Ministry these days…’*

So said Fred in *Order of the Phoenix*. And the reason Dumbledore’s name was mud? Cornelius Fudge, the then-Minister for Magic himself. 

From the moment Fudge turned up to cart Hagrid off to Azkaban in *Chamber of Secrets*, it was clear he and Dumbledore were not on the same page, but the real line in the sand came when he refused to accept Voldemort’s return after the death of Cedric Diggory. Fudge’s behaviour from then on caused real problems for the wider Wizarding World, and damaged his reputation so severely he was eventually forced to resign. If Fudge had listened to Dumbledore, Voldemort’s Death Eaters may not have escaped Azkaban when they did, and Harry’s version of events would have been believed much earlier, giving him vital support when he needed it.

And Fudge was not the only Ministry official to turn against Dumbledore. His successor, Rufus Scrimgeour, fell out with Dumbledore within hours of his appointment, largely because Dumbledore refused to arrange a meeting between Scrimgeour and Harry. And of course, there was the whole Ministry-interfering-at-Hogwarts thing – otherwise know as [Dolores Umbridge](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/dolores-umbridge) – but the less said about that, the better.

Still, as feuds go it was pretty one-sided. Dumbledore repeatedly offered his opinions to the Ministry, and they never took him seriously. But given the damage Fudge in particular wreaked just because he didn’t want to admit Dumbledore was right, it’s up there.

## Queenie Goldstein vs Jacob Kowalski (for a while)

We’re very happy this very sad disagreement didn’t create a lasting rift between *Fantastic Beasts*’ [Queenie Goldstein and her later husband, Jacob Kowalski](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/why-we-cant-help-but-root-for-jacob-and-queenie), but for a while it looked pretty dark. In *Crimes of Grindelwald*, Queenie was so taken with Gellert Grindelwald’s promises of a better world for witches and wizards that would apparently mean she could be with Jacob – who, as a Muggle, she was forbidden from marrying due to the Magical Congress of the United States of America’s strict rules – that she ended up following Grindelwald, even though that decision ultimately led her away from Jacob. Thankfully she later realised what Grindelwald and his followers were really about, and she and Jacob were eventually married. But it demonstrated just how manipulative Grindelwald could be.

## Harry Potter vs the Dursleys

The relationship between Harry and his nearest relatives, the Dursleys, was a festering saga of resentment, dislike and sometimes out-and-out nastiness. Harry was treated badly right from the beginning, and even if we did later get a hint as to why Aunt Petunia harboured such negative feelings towards the Wizarding World, it was never an excuse. Perhaps she felt envious of her sister, Lily, when Lily went off to Hogwarts after she’d been rejected, and perhaps she felt left behind as Lily delighted everyone with magical skills Petunia would never possess, but that envy solidified into something not very pleasant, and it didn’t warrant the serious lack of warmth and welcome Petunia showed her only nephew. They housed him in a cupboard, for goodness’ sake.

But if Petunia was lacking in warmth and welcome, Vernon was something else. Locking Harry in his room, putting bars on his window, threatening to ‘knock the stuffing’ out of him, telling Aunt Marge Harry went to school at St Brutus’s Secure Centre for Incurably Criminal Boys. He was relentlessly mean, and he encouraged his son Dudley to be the same.

And yet Dudley was the one Dursley to make at least some attempt to show Harry kindness. Belatedly recognising Harry had saved him from a Dementor, Dudley’s dislike softened to a point where he was actually able to shake Harry’s hand when they said goodbye. It’s not much, but it was a lot more than either of his parents managed.

## Sirius vs the Blacks

Proving that family rifts and long-held resentments were just as present in the Wizarding World was Harry’s godfather, Sirius. The rest of Sirius’s family died years before Harry met him, but from what Sirius said, they were a pretty unwelcoming bunch:

I hated the whole lot of them: my parents, with their pure-blood mania, convinced that to be a Black made you practically royal … my idiot brother, soft enough to believe them…’

So out of place did Sirius feel within his family that he ran away from home at 16 and apparently did not return until he was forced to hide out in Grimmauld Place whilst on the run from the Ministry of Magic. The Blacks may not have forced him to live in a cupboard under the stairs, but Sirius clearly felt just as unwelcome as Harry did in Privet Drive.

## Albus vs Harry Potter

Harry’s children didn’t endure the childhood he did, but as his son Albus found in *Cursed Child*, it was not always easy having the most famous wizard in the Wizarding World as your father. When Albus was placed in Slytherin by the Sorting Hat, it set him apart from the rest of his family – just like it did for Sirius, although their family situations were very different. Also like Sirius, Albus ran away (albeit from the Hogwarts Express rather than his parent’s house). That action sparked a chain of events that almost ended in the re-emergence of Voldemort and the possible erasure of Albus himself, which is quite a consequence to face for being a teenager with something to prove to your father. Luckily, the rift was resolved, with Harry and Albus reconciling as they stood in front of Cedric Diggory’s grave. But the damage it almost caused makes it pretty serious, if you ask us.

## Percy vs the Weasleys

Another odd-one-out in his wizarding world family was Percy Weasley. Upright, bossy and sensible to the point of superiority, Percy never shared the easy-going, at times bordering-on-chaotic, attitude possessed by most of the other Weasleys. Still, this wasn’t a major problem until his appointment as Junior Assistant to the Minister for Magic (Cornelius Fudge, of course) bought him into conflict with his family. When his father Arthur suggested Percy’s appointment to that post, barely a year since he’d graduated from Hogwarts, might be because the Ministry wanted to use him to keep tabs on the Weaselys and other Dumbledore associates, he went – as Ron said – berserk.

He said – well, he said loads of terrible stuff. He said he’s been having to struggle against Dad’s lousy reputation ever since he joined the Ministry and that Dad’s got no ambition and that’s why we’ve always been – you know – not had a lot of money, I mean.’

For Percy to throw his lot in with the Ministry was pretty bad, but the way he did it was even worse. Insulting his father, blasting out his resentments, and ditching his family to such an extent that he even returned his Weasley jumper – well. He may have come round in the end, but he created a lot of turmoil for his family in the meantime.

## Harry vs Draco

From Quidditch rivals to sworn enemies, the feud between Harry and Draco started before they even arrived at Hogwarts and lasted well into adulthood. As we saw in *Cursed Child* they did reach an uneasy truce in later years, but their schooldays were characterised by a bitter rivalry. There were fouls on the Quidditch pitch and pranks in the corridors, there was that disastrous Duelling Club and the time in* Prisoner of Azkaban* when Draco tried to frighten Harry into losing a Quidditch match by dressing up as a Dementor.

And then there were those much more serious occasions: Draco almost ensuring the death of Buckbeak partly to spite Harry; Harry using Sectumsempra on Draco and nearly causing him to bleed to death; Draco and the Inquisitorial Squad holding Harry and the others back when they were frantically trying to reach Sirius in the Department of Mysteries (or so they thought). With all this in mind, we’re impressed they managed to move forward as adults and at least be civil to each other.

## James Potter vs Severus Snape

Another schoolboy feud with serious consequences was [Harry’s father James’](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/all-the-ways-james-potter-was-a-true-gryffindor) ongoing rivalry with Harry’s teacher, Severus Snape, whilst they were both at Hogwarts. Somehow we can’t imagine these two being civil to each other as adults.

Like Draco and Harry, the rivalry between Snape and James began early and lasted a long time. So long, in fact, that Snape was unable to stop himself projecting his dislike of James onto his son, Harry. And that was despite the love Snape also felt for Harry’s mother, Lily.

Because that was at the heart of this rivalry, even if it wasn’t spoken aloud. Snape could never have liked James because he loved Lily, and James didn’t help the situation by making his own dislike of Snape just as clear. There was hexing, there was name-calling, and there was a moment with the Whomping Willow that almost cost Snape his life. Good thing they weren’t Quidditch rivals too, right?

## Dumbledore vs Grindelwald

This relationship could have been so different, but when [Grindelwald deserted Dumbledore](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/grindelwald-and-dumbledores-history-a-deep-dive) after driving a wedge between him and his family which, in one way or another, caused the death of his sister Ariana, there was no going back. And in the years after, as Grindelwald began his rise to power and Dumbledore could no longer ignore the fact that his old friend’s desire to set wizardkind above Muggles served no “greater good”, that personal betrayal became something much more. 

These two might have started out on a similar page but they ended up literally duelling to the finish for vastly different ideals. Dumbledore famously won, but the rift between them must have cost him a great deal.

## Harry vs Voldemort

It was the feud to end all feuds, so it had to be our number one. From the moment Voldemort first tried to kill Harry as a baby to Harry’s final defeat of Voldemort at the Battle of Hogwarts, there were so many moments of bitter, hate-filled rivalry, as well as few glimpses of understanding. Like the prophecy said, neither could live while the other survived. There was only one way it was ever going to end.

The light hit both of their faces at the same time, so that Voldemort’s was suddenly a flaming blur. Harry heard the high voice shriek as he, too, yelled his best hope to the heavens, pointing Draco’s wand:

Growing up a Weasley: a tale of six brothers and one sister

## Bill

If you look at stereotypical traits associated with first-born children (at least, according to birth order theory) – an aptitude for leadership, a desire to achieve, a tendency to shoulder burdens – then you could see [Bill](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/why-bill-is-the-coolest-weasley-brother), the oldest Weasley sibling, as fairly typical. He was first to be Head Boy, and he seemed to take that high achievement forward into his adult life. He was undoubtedly confident and a clear, natural leader: heading off Egypt to be a curse breaker, sweeping Fleur Delacour off her feet, becoming an integral part of the Order of the Phoenix. 

But he wasn’t typical in every sense. As Ginny once said, Bill liked adventure and glamour, so he could be unpredictable. He might have been a high-achiever, but he was pretty easy-going. And although he stepped up to support his family, he didn’t always do what his mother wanted – whether cutting his hair, losing the fang earring, or not marrying Fleur. 

So while you couldn’t really call him a rebel, he wasn’t exactly a shining beacon of superiority. Bill might have been one of seven, but he was very much his own person.

## Charlie

Those who think birth order influences personality sometimes say second-born children like [Charlie Weasley](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/ode-to-charlie-weasley) are more competitive, and inclined to develop  abilities that mark them out as different from their older sibling. In part, this is because they want to capture attention, although they’re also typically seen as more independent.

Again, Charlie was stereotypical in some ways. His Quidditch-playing abilities showed his skill and probably did give him an outlet to be competitive. Plus, the fact that he was Quidditch Captain and not Head Boy gave him a different identity to Bill. He was pretty independent, too, given he chose to study dragons and move to Romania. 

But he wasn’t exactly an attention-seeker, and he never seemed that bothered about attracting his parents’ approval. In fact, his life in Romania meant he kind of opted-out of a lot of Weasley family dynamics. So, again, the jury is out.

## Percy

In some ways, [Percy](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/in-defence-of-percy-weasley) was a more stereotypical ‘older’ child than Bill – sensible, authoritative, superior on occasion. He certainly did not share either of his older brothers’ easygoing attitude, although he did follow in Bill’s footsteps by becoming Head Boy.

But, while being the third-born in a family of seven meant Percy couldn’t quite claim middle-child status, he was pretty stereotypically middle-child in outlook. His personality meant he stood out in the laid-back Weasley family – pompous, fussy, and bossy were all words used to describe Percy. And of course, there was the whole disowning-his-family-to-further-his-career thing. He even said he’d been struggling against his father’s reputation since joining the Ministry, which was a low blow to his family. 

But perhaps Percy acted how he did because he felt left-out, which is another stereotypical middle-child trait. Being sandwiched in between two easygoing, popular older brothers and the devil-may-care prankery of Fred and George can’t have been easy. So carving out a reputation as a serious, hard-working professional at least gave him an identity other than that of Weasley sibling.

## Fred and George

Fred was born slightly before his twin George which technically makes him the middle Weasley child, but as Fred and George always came as a pair (sob) we couldn’t separate them for the purposes of this list. Perhaps it’s because they came as a pair that birth order stereotypes don’t seem to apply to this duo. They might be a twosome, but they were one-of-a-kind when it came to the wider Weasley family. After all, nobody else jacked in full-time education, was ambitious enough to open a shop, or had the imagination to create magical products that were bulk-ordered by the Ministry (Shield Hats, anyone?)

Individually, Fred was perhaps the more confident of the two. His [name was mentioned more often in the books](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/fred-and-george-weasley-infographic), and it was often Fred who instigated their pranks, although George obviously did more than his fair share of trickery. By contrast, [George was slightly more sympathetic than his twin](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/differences-between-fred-and-george-weasley). He was, generally, the one who smoothed things over, as when he suggested they tone down their letter to Ludo Bagman after he refused to pay their Quidditch Cup winnings. 

But whichever way you slice it, it’s hard see either Fred or George as stereotypical middle children. Everything they did was designed to surprise, so it’s actually no surprise that they don’t fit the mould. 

## Ron

And so we come to Ron. The youngest brother, but not the youngest sibling, [Ron seemed to think he had the worst deal when it came to his family](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/5-times-ron-weasley-proved-its-tough-to-stand-out). One of the first things he talked to Harry about was how difficult he found constantly following in his brother’s footsteps:

*‘Everyone expects me to do as well as the others, but if I do, it’s no big deal, because they did it first.’*

Later, when the Mirror of Erised revealed his true desire, Ron saw himself standing outside the shadow of his elder siblings for once in his life. These feelings of resentment reared their head on other occasions too. His friendship with Harry also meant he was often overshadowed, and that later led him to jealously reject Harry when he was declared a Triwizard Champion. And, obviously, it also led him to abandon the Horcrux hunt during Deathly Hallows – something which, it was later revealed, was partly due to that feeling of being overshadowed which had begun in his childhood. As the Horcrux-Riddle-apparition revealed, in his darkest thoughts, Ron had felt:

*‘Least loved, always, by the mother who craved a daughter…’*

That particular worry was probably in Ron’s head, but Ron didn’t seem to receive any of the apparent benefits stereotypically associated with being a younger member of the family. He didn’t get extra parental attention, he wasn’t spoiled or particularly looked after by his older siblings. Not that Ginny was, either, but she did at least stand out purely because she was the only girl. Poor old Ron was always just the last Weasley brother.

## Ginny

Stereotypically, the youngest child can be charming, outgoing and fond of attention. When it comes to [Ginny](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/chapter-that-made-us-fall-in-love-with-ginny-weasley), two out of three isn’t bad. As she grew older she proved popular and confident, but she didn’t go out of her way to seek the limelight. The Bat Bogey Hex she performed on Zacharias Smith might have brought her to the attention of Professor Slughorn, for example, but she didn’t exactly embrace the opportunity.

Ginny’s first couple of years at Hogwarts were less successful – remember when she used to blush every time Harry looked at her? Oh, yes, and that time she went and inadvertently opened the Chamber of Secrets. But even that was not the action of a spoiled, reckless youngest child ready to charm her way out of trouble. No, when the time came, Ginny freely confessed that she’d been taken over by the ghost of Tom Riddle, because she’d been writing in his diary all year.

And why did Ginny write in the diary? Well, because Tom Riddle seemed to listen to all her worries:

*‘how her brothers tease her, how she had to come to school with second-hand robes and books... how she didn’t think famous, good, great Harry Potter would ever like her…’*

These are not the worries of a happy, content youngest child. Looks like Ginny sometimes felt as insecure as Ron. Perhaps they had more in common than either of them thought. 

In conclusion: families are complicated. But, all in all, it seems like being a Weasley was more about the bigger picture than their individual experiences. Even Percy came to his senses in the end.

## Eat something enchanting before going inside

Celebrating the world of witchcraft and wizardry on an empty stomach is not recommended! Thankfully, the exhibition has lots of delicious snacks on offer to fill you up before you go exploring.

## An interactive wristband will make you feel extra magic 

A simple wristband on your hand will be far more enchanting than your usual ones. This wristband can hold any photos you have taken during the exhibition – and will help you personalise your interactions through the experience! 

## Put your name inside the Marauder’s Map

You will get the opportunity to not just see the Marauder’s Map, but to be part of it. Simply scan your wristband and try to locate your very own name on our favourite enchanted parchment. 

## Discover special artefacts – such as a first edition of the first Harry Potter book

As well as the more technologically marvellous elements of the exhibition, you’ll also be able to get back to basics and look at some artefacts of Harry Potter history – a particular highlight was seeing a first edition Harry Potter book, which would’ve been published more than 20 years ago.

One of our absolute most-loved lessons in Hogwarts history is Remus Lupin’s Boggart tutorial. Brilliantly, at the exhibition, you can banish your very own Boggart, as well as take part in other class activities, such as Potions and Herbology.

## Explore iconic classrooms and rooms of Hogwarts

As such, you’ll be able to visit all of your favourite rooms of Hogwarts, which have been celebrated in such clever ways inside the exhibition. This Great Hall moment, complete with a floating candles illusion, is particularly resonant.  

## Look into Dumbledore’s Pensieve

Feeling reflective? This Pensieve experience creates an ethereal feeling when you visit the exhibition, and you’ll be able to gaze into it, just like Dumbledore liked to do with his many, many memories.
