## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

The first one seems obvious – but you never know! Perhaps you got sorted years ago and have been feeling a bit more Hufflepuffish in your later years… perhaps you’re feeling Slytherin-strong and are determined to renew that fact. When you come from a family of 9, every day’s a party, right? 

OK, perhaps not, but you’d certainly have enough ready-made (if unwilling) event planners, decorators, and caterers on hand. So we like to think Ron Weasley would throw a great little shindig – with a little help from his friends (and family.)

## The invitations 

First thing’s first – your invitations will set the tone for the whole event, so no Howlers. We appreciate the Muggle world offers quicker methods of communication, but if you want to make your guests feel special you just can’t beat a good old-fashioned embossed invitation, delivered by Owl Post. Maybe find a reliable owl to do the job first, though. Errol would be too slow, and you don’t want a Pigwidgeon-style mess on your hands. You need a bird that’s regal and reliable. Hedwig would be great.

## The dress code

Outfit-wise we imagine Ron’s parties to be anything-goes sort of affairs, but still, nobody wants to show up looking like their Great Aunt Tessie, so it’s worth taking time to consider your clothing ahead of any big do. Mouldy lace cuffs, no. Smart dress robes, yes. Singed eyebrows, no. A magical accessory of your choice, well, why not? The decision is yours, but we’ll just remind you Ron’s not really a fan of maroon. May we suggest a nice midnight blue?

## The music

As a (usually) easygoing kind of guy we reckon Ron’s party playlist would cater to most musical tastes, but we’re pretty sure Nearly Headless Nick’s Deathday Party favourite – an orchestral piece featuring thirty musical saws – would not make the cut. Instead, we suggest sticking on some Weird Sisters. Ron himself might have spent a large portion of the Yule Ball in a sulk, but the Weird Sisters certainly got most of the party guests up and dancing. And if Dumbledore booked them, they must be good.

## The entertainment 

Not everyone knows a pair of jokers as capable of setting off a colourful firework display as Ron’s brothers Fred and George, but – whatever the occasion – fireworks certainly make a fantastic party pièce de résistance. If you can’t get your hands on a set of Weasley’s Wildfire Whiz-bangs or Dr Filibuster’s exploding fireworks, regular Muggle fireworks can be just as impressive. But do make sure you follow all the correct safety procedures. Sparklers and firecrackers and Catherine wheels might be pretty, but no Wizard Wheeze is worth risking your party guests’ safety for.

## The presents

We’re not sure gift-giving was one of Ron’s skills – anyone fancy a copy of *Twelve Fail-Safe Ways to Charm Witches?* – but when it came to presents, he did understand the importance of knowing your audience. He didn’t give Harry that book in front of his mother now, did he? Basically, when getting someone a gift, just make sure it’s something they will like and not something you will like. Sounds simple, we know, but let’s not forget Ron was once given a thick gold chain bearing the legend ‘My Sweetheart’ that literally revolted him. Perhaps he and Lavender were better suited than we thought: she definitely didn’t have the best gift-giving skills, either.

## The food

And now we come to the most important part of any party. Yes, we’re talking about the food. Ron was lucky to have his mother, Molly Weasley, as caterer-in-chief for most of his parties – you know, the woman who frequently fed a family of 9 (plus assorted guests) meals to rival even the most extravagant Hogwarts feast, all of which she prepared almost entirely single-handedly. But we appreciate not everyone has a chef in the kitchen, let alone one armed with a magic wand. Still, it’s important to consider your party menu ahead of time. Preparation is everything, even if you do have magic at your disposal – as Ron himself discovered on the Horcrux hunt, nobody can conjure tasty meals out of nothing. So what we’re saying is, get the supplies in…

## The after-dinner chocolates

…with one exception. You can take Chocolate Cauldrons off the party food list. Ron had a very bad birthday experience with a box of Chocolate Cauldrons once. We wouldn’t want to remind him of that.

Some easy, some difficult, some a little bit devilish. Get the answers right and watch your house hourglass cheerfully fill up with gems, just like the ones in the Great Hall do. Now, far be it from us to stir up some competitive tension – however, Ravenclaw have won our last two championships… Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, you may need to step it up… 

And if you need a little help, we’ll once again be launching little study packs in the official Harry Potter Fan Club app, to give you a heads up on the next quiz theme, and give you a chance to revise for your next exam – extreme Hermione energy, we know. ## Ginny and the Bat Bogey Hex

[Ginny Weasley](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/chapter-that-made-us-fall-in-love-with-ginny-weasley)’s aptitude for the Bat Bogey Hex was impressive enough to earn her the admiration of no less a talent-spotter than Professor Slughorn. As the youngest Weasley, we’re sure Ginny observed more than her fair share of unpleasant spells over the years but it was the Bat Bogey Hex she was famous for – and with good reason. This was the spell that overpowered Draco Malfoy and the Inquisitorial Squad, and also secured her an invite to the Slug Club. Now, Ginny might not have been bothered about the Slug Club, but her ability to execute a Bat Bogey attack shows just how much nerve she really had, and on this point we’re in full agreement with Slughorn…

Underestimate Ginny at your peril. 

## Professor Lockhart and his Memory Charms

The incantation for a Memory Charm was Obliviate, which seems quite fitting for [Professor Gilderoy Lockhart](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/gilderoy-lockhart), given how (seemingly) oblivious he was to his own shortcomings. Vain, selfish, and as full of himself as he was, Lockhart did have a real talent for making other people forget their achievements so that he could take credit for them, without fear of repercussion. Basically, he loved a Memory Charm because he was a big liar. It’s not much to write home about, is it? All in all, we can’t think of a better consequence for such breathtaking arrogance than being hit by your own backfiring Memory Charm. Obliviate, indeed.

## Hermione’s bluebell flames

[Hermione](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/importance-of-hermione-granger)’s magical talents meant she was good at every spell, right from the beginning – Wingardium Leviosa, anyone? But the bluebell flames she once used against Snape became one of her trademarks, and it’s also one of our favourites. Hermione used it to help her, Ron and Harry escape the Devil’s Snare in Philosopher’s Stone and, later, to keep them warm during the Horcrux hunt. It was a practical spell that always came in useful, giving out light and warmth when it was most needed. Just like Hermione herself.

## Ron and the ‘eat slugs’ spell

It’s not exactly [Ron](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/some-interesting-facts-you-may-not-have-known-about-ron-weasley)’s signature spell, but we will forever remember the way his ‘eat slugs’ curse backfired in *Chamber of Secrets*, leaving him to vomit slimy creatures all over Hagrid’s hut. Perhaps this is because it was so very Ron: a bit silly, pretty funny, and the kind of spell to cast in anger, without a thought for the consequences. That, and it happened when Ron was attempting to curse Malfoy in defence of Hermione, which is also kind of sweet. You know, in a grotesque way.

## Voldemort and Avada Kedavra

It is no surprise that [Voldemort](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/things-you-may-not-have-noticed-about-lord-voldemort) liked casting Unforgivable Curses – he’d use anything to stop those who stood in his way. The ever-loyal B[ellatrix Lestrange](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/pottermore-bellatrix-lestrange-infographic) once explained to Harry the art of the Unforgivable Curse:

Like her master Bellatrix did clearly enjoy causing pain, but where she had a particular talent for the Cruciatus Curse, Voldemort tended to favour the simple act of killing. Avada Kedavra was undoubtedly his signature spell. As when he used it on [Cedric Diggory](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/unsung-heroes-of-harry-potter-stories-cedric-diggory), it was quick, clean, and without mercy. Expect, of course, when it came to Harry…

## Harry and the Patronus charm

We’re not going to deny that [Expelliarmus was Harry’s signature spell](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/expelliarmus-exploring-harry-potters-signature-spell). Lupin said so, after all, and given it was the spell Harry used to ultimately defeat Voldemort, he was not wrong. But Harry also had a proven talent for that oh-so difficult spell Lupin himself taught him. Casting a Patronus was very advanced magic, but by his fifth year Harry was so adept at it that he was able to save his cousin Dudley’s life, impress the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, and begin teaching his fellow students how to cast it when they formed the DA. Which is – as Madam Bones, the said Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, proclaimed – very impressive indeed.

Although combining spells and using plants and potions strategically is encouraged, we won’t blame you if you just want to button-bash. And there will be plenty of big bosses for you to take out your frustrations on – although we hope you’re not afraid of giant spiders.

## If you’re a social butterfly… you’ll be talking to all the characters!

After so many years of dreaming of a game like this, we finally have the opportunity to live like a proper Hogwarts student, with so many classmates and professors dotted around the castle to socialise with. Of course you want to have a natter with everyone! And don’t forget about the portraits, house-elves and ghosts too – or Peeves the Poltergeist, who usually has a little poem for you.

And of course, you can go beyond Hogwarts to make friends too. We particularly like the travelling musician who likes to collect musical instruments – he’s quite the talent of the wizarding world!

## If you have a big imagination… you’ll pick the dialogue options completely different to what you’d do in real life

Ooh, the temptation to pick the ‘mean’ options when you’re having a chat with someone in a game… and in Hogwarts Legacy, there are plenty of devilish dialogue choices that channel your inner Draco Malfoy rather than your inner Neville to choose from. So are you going to be nice or a bit nasty? 

## If you love to travel… you’ll be exploring the Scottish Highlands

The designers of Hogwarts Legacy put a lot of love and care into the scenic Scottish highlands where Hogwarts is set. If all the Hogwarts classes are too much brain-energy for you, never fear. Just hop on your broom and traverse the gorgeous landscapes surrounding the castle. You’ll fly by many beautiful scenes, such as lakes, forestry and 1800s-style hamlets. And as the seasons change with your gaming experience, you’ll get to explore the environments in all sorts of different weathers. We’ve all low-key dreamed of hanging out in a snowy Hogwarts, surely.

## If you’re a wholesome sort… you’ll be a cosy gamer in the Room of Requirement

You probably grew up playing simulator-style games, where you get to generally potter (yep, we said it) about, tending to your gentle, daily tasks. Although Hogwarts Legacy has a big, epic storyline running through it – you also get the joy of simply getting to chill at Hogwarts. The Room of Requirement, in particular, is a space where you can just tinker, decorate, and build items. And then you have the Vivarium, which lets you look after cute magical creatures and create your own beautiful outdoor space. Who needs a storyline when you can just vibe?

## If you love the finer details in life… you’ll be a side-quester, hunting for easter eggs

Every nook and cranny of Hogwarts castle is ripe for exploring… and who could blame you if you end up caught up in a side-quest or two? Or three… or four… yes, there’s quite a lot of them. Whether you’re in Hogwarts itself, out in the highlands, or off shopping in Hogsmeade, do keep an eye out for little challenges, everywhere you go. Side-quests could be anything, from solving logic puzzles to helping a fellow student find her Gobstones. And don’t forget to cast Revelio every five seconds, because you just never know what you might uncover. You can also scan your map and look for side-quest markers.

We also recommend reading all the entries in your Ministry Field Guide, simply for some fascinating little tidbits.

## If you’re an adventurer, you’ll be focusing on the main story

No messing about! Maybe you’re even tempted to try out a Hogwarts speed-run? Just remember to actually sleep at some point.

Hogwarts Legacy has a beautiful character-creator with so many options for you to choose from, whether it’s outfits, accessories or a voice-slider. You could theoretically spend a long time here just perfecting your ultimate Hogwarts student. Just remember to actually begin your legacy at some point when you’ve got your hair the absolute perfect shade of pink.

## Cho Chang, Cedric Diggory, and Harry Potter

Well, this was a tangled web, wasn’t it? Harry seemed to like Cho the moment they first faced off against each other for a Quidditch match, but the route from first meeting to first date was long and torturous. The first date itself was pretty torturous too – on Valentine’s Day, no less – although it was, at least, mercifully short. 

Of course, the main reason it was so torturous was [Cedric Diggory](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/unsung-heroes-of-harry-potter-stories-cedric-diggory). Handsome Hufflepuff hero and tragic Triwizard champion Cedric asked Cho out before Harry could get a look-in which clearly didn’t help, but it was his untimely death that really put paid to Cho and Harry’s relationship. Cedric remained a presence even after his death, and the complicated emotions he provoked in both Cho and Harry were too much for a teenage crush to bear. Still, Cho did give Harry his first kiss and a disastrous first date story for the ages. But we bet he never went back to Madam Puddifoot’s.

## Leta Lestrange, Theseus Scamander, Newt Scamander (oh, and Tina Goldstein)

We don’t know all the ins and outs of this love triangle (or love cube, as it became) but something went pear-shaped somewhere. In *Fantastic Beasts*, [Legilimens](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/a-guide-to-legilimency) Queenie Goldstein was able to read [Newt](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/why-newt-scamander-was-a-true-hufflepuff)’s feelings about Leta easily because he was hurting, which was connected to the friendship they’d had when they were both outsiders at Hogwarts. So far, so mysterious. 

But the next time we saw Leta, in *The Crimes of Grindelwald*, she was engaged to Newt’s brother Theseus. What was that all about? Did Leta simply break Newt’s heart, as Queenie implied when she said: *'She was a taker. You need a giver.'* – ? Or was it more complicated than that? Theseus didn’t seem aware Newt might have had feelings for Leta, so did Newt hide them? Nobody seemed sure, least of all poor Tina Goldstein, who mistakenly thought it was Newt who’d become engaged to Leta because of wizarding celebrity rag Spellbound’s incorrect reporting, and began dating someone else as a result. Newt, perhaps you should just have been honest in the first place. Not every Goldstein is a Legilimens.

## Hermione Granger, Viktor Krum, and Ron Weasley

Ah, yes, remember when Ron was really jealous of Viktor Krum for a stupidly long amount of time but seemed to have no idea why? What a wild ride that was. Although perhaps not for Hermione, who had to put up with Ron’s mumbled asides for more than two years: telling her off for *'fraternising with the enemy'* when she dared to go to the Yule Ball with Viktor, calling him Vicky, complaining about the letters she wrote him, holding the fact that she’d snogged him against her years afterwards. Hmmm. On reflection, this was quite a one-sided triangle, but it did lead inexorably towards… 

## Ron Weasley, Lavender Brown, and Hermione Granger

There’s nothing so romantic as snogging someone because you’re jealous of the fact that your best female friend and haven’t-yet-admitted-it-crush did it two years ago now, is there? Perhaps we’re being uncharitable, but Ron’s relationship with Lavender Brown seemed more of a belated response to Hermione and Viktor than anything else. Or, as Ginny said:

And Hermione snogged Viktor Krum, it’s only you who acts like it’s something disgusting, Ron, and that’s because you’ve got about as much experience as a twelve-year-old!

He certainly proved Ginny wrong though, didn’t he? Snogging Lavender whenever he could, in full view of Hermione and anyone else unfortunate enough to have to witness it. Unlike Ron, though, Hermione’s jealousy and upset was immediately obvious, and when we think about the way Ron acted we can’t really blame her for setting a flock of birds on him. Lavender didn’t fare too well either, with Ron unable even to do the decent thing and break up with her. All-in-all, it was not a good episode for Won-Won.

## Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, and Harry Potter

This was mostly only a love triangle in Ron’s mind because, as Harry told Ron after he’d stormed out on them, he loved Hermione like a sister. But Ron – who was used to being overshadowed by his older siblings; used to his own mother forgetting he didn’t like maroon or corned beef; and, of course, used to playing sidekick to his heroic best friend – didn’t seem to know that. Which is not entirely surprising. Harry and Hermione were close enough for Rita Skeeter to spin her own false story about them during her salacious Triwizard Tournament coverage; a story that many – Molly Weasley among them – believed. So when it was Ron’s turn to wear Slytherin’s locket during the Horcrux hunt, obviously the horrible thing spoke to all his darkest fears. It exaggerated every worry he’d ever had, and made him brood on his paranoid imaginings. We suppose that in some roundabout way it did also help Ron acknowledge his feelings for Hermione, but that’s about all we can say for that particular piece of jewellery.
