## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

## Because he knew how to compartmentalise

[Occlumency](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/a-guide-to-occlumency) is about partitioning up and blocking off parts of your brain, something Snape knew all about. Even before he started working against Voldemort, he’d spent years putting his emotions in boxes. His childhood wasn’t happy, with all the information he gave Lily about Hogwarts suggesting he was desperate to leave his home life behind. And he spent a long time coveting the Defence Against the Dark Arts job, despite being a seemingly committed Potions teacher.

Then, of course, there were his unreciprocated feelings for Lily. We don’t know if she ever suspected, but it seems likely he never told anyone else. Certainly, he asked Dumbledore to keep his love for Lily a secret. Dumbledore, of course, gave his word that he would never reveal what he saw as the best part of Snape – and after that, Snape locked his love for Lily away from everyone else, and almost literally took it with him to the grave.

## Because he had a lot of practice

His extreme remorse over Lily’s death gave [Snape](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/pottermore-severus-snape-infographic) the motivation to effectively fool Voldemort for many, many years. Dumbledore himself said he would trust the dangerous job of spying on Voldemort – giving him just enough information not to become suspicious – to nobody but Snape. 

When you break down what Snape did over those years, it was pretty impressive. Keeping Harry safe, whilst also apparently feeding information to Voldemort that put him directly in danger. Making an Unbreakable Vow with Narcissa Malfoy to prevent Draco killing Dumbledore, when he knew Dumbledore was dying anyway. Letting Death Eaters take over Hogwarts, while leading Harry to Gryffindor’s sword. Pretty much everything he did was two-sided. Even in the alternate, Voldemort-flavoured reality we witnessed in *Cursed Child*, Snape was working undercover. He really was that committed to the double-agent life and, as he himself told Harry, being good at Occlumency was an essential part of the job.

## Because he was inscrutable 

Harry was never good at Occlumency because he was too hot-headed. He was used to thinking on his feet, used to displaying his emotions, used to acting first and reflecting later. Snape, on the other hand, was cold, calculating, and patient. After all, he waited 17 years to avenge Lily’s death, following Dumbledore’s plan with careful precision, always keeping his feelings firmly to himself. Such patience helped him perfect the art of Occlumency. He rarely rushed into things in the way that Harry did, which meant he could (usually) calmly organise his thoughts when the situation required it. Even when Harry blurted out his concern for Sirius in front of a bemused Professor Umbridge, Snape’s response gave nothing away.

Snape looked round at Harry. His face was inscrutable. Harry could not tell whether he had understood or not, but he did not dare speak more plainly in front of Umbridge.

## And yet – he couldn’t shut out every emotion

If Occlumency was about shutting down essential parts of yourself, even ignoring your own instincts in certain circumstances, then, for all the reasons listed above, it is no great surprise that Snape was so good at it. He lived a double-life for a long, long time. But there was one emotion he could never keep entirely hidden: his bitter jealously and deep resentment of Harry’s father.

When Dumbledore decided Harry needed to learn Occlumency, he instructed Snape to teach him because he felt doing it himself would expose Harry to more harm. This was an uncharacteristically terrible decision. Dumbledore knew Occlumency was about emotional self-control, and he also knew both Harry and Snape were prone to losing their emotional self-control whenever they were in contact with each other. Snape might have thought he’d protected his particularly negative memories about James Potter by using a Pensieve, but Harry’s impulsive curiosity – so at odds with Snape’s calculated and methodical manner – meant that was a disaster waiting to happen. 

When he realised Harry had seen what his father had once done to him, Snape reacted with actual violence. He pushed Harry to the floor, threw glass jars at his head and chased him out of the room. Just the memory of James Potter had enough power to make him forget himself. All his inscrutability deserted him. Which is proof, if proof were needed, that nobody’s mind is completely invulnerable. Not even Snape’s.

## Because he was motivated

But for the most part, Snape was able to shut down his mind effectively. When he was not being goaded by the memory of James or the reality of his reckless son, Snape’s abilities as a double-agent were unmatched. And it all comes back to that central reason. The essential part of himself that he boxed up and locked away. The best part of himself, according to Dumbledore. His love for Lily. You will take part in a Sorting Ceremony when you join Hogwarts, absolutely. And from there, you can choose which house you’ll join, and in turn, which Hogwarts common room you’ll have access to.

## What type of game is Hogwarts Legacy?

[Hogwarts Legacy](https://www.wizardingworld.com/hogwarts-legacy) is an immersive, open-world action RPG which invites you to be at the center of your own wizarding world story. You’ll be able to attend Hogwarts classes, duel, create things, level up, nurture magical creatures, fly, make friends, make important decisions, and gradually unfurl ancient secrets about the wizarding world.  

## What is the main plot of Hogwarts Legacy?

Well, as the title suggests, your legacy is what you make it, but there are indeed many fascinating storylines running through the game for you to discover. So far, we know that you are a fifth year Hogwarts student who may hold the secret to an “ancient secret” that threatens the wizarding world. We’ve also seen a few sub-plots mentioned in the game, such as reference to the Goblin Rebellions and a number of characters with their own secrets.

## Why do I start Hogwarts Legacy as a fifth year? 

Why indeed! Needless to say, we suspect it’s for a pretty important reason to be allowed to join Hogwarts so late. In the most [recent gameplay footage](https://www.wizardingworld.com/news/hogwarts-legacy-december-showcase-reveals-room-of-requirement-and-broom-flight) released last month, it was revealed that our character will receive a field guide from the Ministry of Magic, which will help us catch up on our studies. If the Ministry is so eager to help us, surely we must be important...

We have also heard, in [previous trailers for the game](https://www.wizardingworld.com/news/introducing-hogwarts-legacy-open-world-role-playing-game-set-in-wizarding-world), of “an ancient knowledge long gone from this world”, and how we possess a “strange and mysterious talent” that could “unlock a dormant power”.  Hmm, that sounds like hard work. Can’t we just do some gardening in the Hogwarts greenhouses? Oh, just kidding. But we do suspect our character must hold the key to something very powerful. 

## When is Hogwarts Legacy set?

The game is set in the late 1800s, long before Harry Potter’s time, which was roughly set in the 1990s. However, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is an age-old castle that looks after its history, and many rooms and corridors of the school remind us of how we’ve seen Hogwarts portrayed in the Harry Potter and [Fantastic Beasts](https://www.wizardingworld.com/collections/fantastic-beasts-collection) films. Certain [portraits](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/hogwarts-portraits), [ghosts](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/ghosts) and rooms have been at Hogwarts a long time.

## Can I fly in Hogwarts Legacy? 

Oh, absolutely. Either by broom, or even by Hippogriff! You’ll even be able to traverse outside of the Hogwarts grounds and deep into the gorgeous Scottish Highlands, where there is much to explore. As for Quidditch? Sadly, you won’t be able to play Quidditch, but we will be able to take part in broom race challenges. 

## Can I cast dark spells in Hogwarts Legacy, such as Avada Kedavra?

Should we be worried why you’re even asking that? But indeed, yes, if you simply must, all three Unforgiveable Curses (Imperio, Crucio and Avada Kedavra) are available to learn and play in the game, with devastating effects. In the [Dark Legacy trailer](https://www.wizardingworld.com/news/hogwarts-legacy-announces-pre-order-details-and-dark-legacy-trailer), we encounter a character called Sebastian Sallow, who seems rather adept performing Dark magic. Will you follow him – or maybe opt for more... wholesome spells?

## What lessons can I learn in Hogwarts Legacy?

Many lessons you know and love from the Harry Potter stories will be available to master in Hogwarts Legacy, such as Potions, Charms, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Herbology, History of Magic, Potions and beyond.  

## Are there any Harry Potter characters I know in Hogwarts Legacy? 

Although you will meet many new characters in Hogwarts in the 1800s, there are some familiar faces that have frequented the castle for a long, long time. In the footage we’ve seen so far, we’ve spotted Nearly Headless Nick, the Gryffindor house ghost, [Peeves](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/peeves), the unruly poltergeist and The Fat Lady portrait. Speaking of ghosts, of course, Professor Binns is still hanging around (or should that be floating around) teaching History of Magic, which leads us to wonder if we’ll run into the other ghosts from Harry’s time at Hogwarts, such as The Grey Lady, The Bloody Baron or the Fat Friar. 

We’ve also seen references to other historical characters dotted around the castle, such as a bust of Ignatia Wildsmith, the inventor of Floo Powder. We’re sure we’ll spot more when we finally play.

## What new characters will we meet in Hogwarts Legacy?

From house-elves to goblins to Hogwarts professors and students, we can’t wait to make some new magical friends – and let’s face it – probably some enemies. In the footage we’ve seen so far, we’ve seen a goblin called Ranrok, a house-elf called Deek and a teacher called Professor Fig, to name a few. We’ve also bumped into some Hogwarts students, such as the aforementioned Sebastian Sallow, Natsai, a quick-witted Gryffindor, Poppy, a magical-creature-loving Hufflepuff, and Zenobia, a young Ravenclaw student who invites you on a Gobstone quest.

These are just some of the characters we’ve spotted so far – but we’ve also heard a few familiar-sounding names. For example, we noted the last name of “Prewett” from a recent showcase, which we know to be [Molly Weasley’s maiden name](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/witches-and-wizards-you-might-not-have-realised-were-related) – and there is also another character who goes by the name of “Rookwood”, which immediately reminds us of the Death Eater, Augustus Rookwood, from Harry’s era. Are these people ancestors to characters we know? Or is it all just a funny old coincidence? We know how far back wizarding families tend to go… 

## Which magical creatures can I expect to encounter in Hogwarts Legacy?

So far, in gameplay footage, we have spotted Kneazles, Nifflers, Hippogriffs, dragons, Graphorns, Mooncalves and Trolls. So, some nice, some nasty. And as we learnt from the December showcase, we’ll even have our own private space to look after magical creatures and nurture them.

## Where can I go in Hogwarts Legacy?

The game promises to give you a deeply detailed and rich exploration of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, celebrated with much love and care by the game developers. But you’ll also be able to venture outside of the castle grounds. You can practise your duelling in Battle Arenas, cautiously traipse through the Forbidden Forest or go for a spot of shopping in Hogsmeade village. Although we’re going to struggle to leave our cosy common room, to be honest.

## How customisable is my avatar on Hogwarts Legacy? 

Very! In our first gameplay showcase, we were shown just how detailed you can make your character, from freckles, to different tones of voice, to skin and hair colours. There will also be a variety of outfits and accessories too, some which you’ll acquire along your journey, or purchase at wizarding shops. We can’t wait to see what your character will be serving!

## If you’re in Gryffindor

For some [Gryffindors](https://www.wizardingworld.com/collections/gryffindor), being brave and daring and chivalrous came with a hefty side-order of recklessness (see: Harry’s habit of charging off to save people at the drop of a hat), impulsive thoughtlessness (see: Ron deserting his friends during the Horcrux hunt), and even arrogance (*cough* Sirius and James *cough*). Perhaps you, too, are a Gryffindor occasionally prone to be quick-tempered or over-confident? We’re not judging, honestly – even the Chosen One wasn’t perfect.

So if this does sound like you, we suggest that this year, you resolve to think before you act. You know, like Harry was once forced to by Hermione, when she insisted he check Sirius was actually being held at the Department of Mysteries before running full-pelt into danger. Alright, they did then end up running full-pelt into danger, but at least Hermione’s voice of reason prevailed for a minute or two. And it never hurts to consider the consequences before jumping right in.

## If you’re in Hufflepuff

We have long taken issue with Hagrid’s casual reference to [Hufflepuffs](https://www.wizardingworld.com/collections/hufflepuff) being ‘a lot o’ duffers,’ but this New Year we urge any Hufflepuffs for whom this entirely unfounded assumption still rankles to join us as we say: ignore the haters.

Yes, from this moment on, we resolve to stop caring what other people think – unless they’re thinking good things, in which case they are correct and we need talk no more about it. Because Hufflepuff is a house of bright, kind, emotionally intelligent people. And emotionally intelligent people do not dwell on nonsense spouted by those who are less well-informed. Hufflepuffs, let’s make 2023 the year we rise above it.

## If you’re in Ravenclaw

Every [Ravenclaw](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/6-reasons-to-get-excited-if-youre-sorted-into-ravenclaw) understands that being known for wit, creativity and/or cleverness can sometimes be exhausting; even a bit daunting. Occasionally, a Ravenclaw just wants to enter the room without having to first ponder an obscure question, meditate on the meaning of life, or complete some tricky logic puzzle. ## If you’re in Slytherin

We know [Slytherins](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/6-reasons-its-okay-if-you-get-sorted-into-slytherin) get a bad rap for that cunning ambition they supposedly possess, but [as we’ve said before](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/all-the-different-ways-you-can-be-a-slytherin), it’s not always a bad thing. On the contrary, it’s good to have goals and to be confident about achieving them. That’s basically what a New Year’s resolution is, right?

All of which is to say: Slytherins, please don’t take this the wrong way, but this New Year we’d like you to consider the old saying – pride comes before a fall. Take Draco Malfoy. His misplaced family pride certainly led him to extreme lengths. So if, like Draco, your Slytherin ambition has ever threatened to overshadow your other instincts, we suggest you keep that in mind this January. Resolve to swallow your pride when circumstances require it – and to ask for help if you need it. Then we’ll be the proud ones.

## If you’re known for being forgetful, your perfect gift would be… a Remembrall

Do you often get the unnerving sensation that you’ve forgotten something? Then you  need to get your hands on a Remembrall. Maybe the set Sirius and Lupin once bought Harry – Practical Defensive Magic and its Use Against the Dark Arts. Maybe the New Theory of Numerology book Harry once bought Hermione. Maybe Quidditch Through the Ages or even Twelve Fail-Safe Ways to Charm Witches. Whatever your new festive read, we’re sure it would beat a regular Muggle book.

Just imagine! One sip of Felix Felicis with your Christmas dinner and you could be sweeping the board at monopoly, winning every hand of cards, acing the family quiz. It might not be fun for anyone else but you’d be having a great time, wouldn’t you? Besides, someone has to win these things.

We’re not sure how much help the old Felix Felicis would be if you were steering actual miniature troops around, as we presume even magical ivory chess pieces cannot be force-fed liquid luck. Anyway, chess is not a game of luck, but one of skill. And Wizard Chess would be a great way to put your skills to the test.

## If you enjoy a festive tipple, you should hope for… some Butterbeer

This hugely versatile wizarding world beverage can be served warm or cold – which makes it pretty perfect for the Christmas and New Year period, if you ask us. As we all know, however, it’s pretty strong for House-Elves, which would be all the more reason to keep it to yourself.

## If you’re a fan of plants, look out for… some Mimbulus mimbletonia under the tree

A rare plant with incredible defensive properties, we imagine Mimbulus mimbletonia would make an interesting addition to any collection. It would certainly be good for warding off predators – there’d be no chance of any birds or bees nibbling on a plant that looks like a small grey cactus, is covered in boils, and spurts out Stinksap when threatened.

## If you like to indulge your sweet tooth, here’s hoping for some… magical sweets and treats

Mrs Weasley’s homemade fudge. Toothflossing Stringmints. Bertie Bott’s Every-Flavour Beans. Chocolate Frogs. Nut brittle. Everything Honeydukes ever made. Any one of these delicious items would be a welcome addition to a wizarding world Christmas stocking – and tis the season to indulge, right?
