## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

## When he lent Hagrid his flying motorbike

We may not have witnessed this first-hand, and, yes, in the days immediately after Hagrid landed the afore-mentioned flying motorbike in Privet Drive Sirius was hauled off to Azkaban, but still. Owning a flying motorbike was pretty daring. Giving it up to Hagrid was pretty generous. And leaving it behind in protection of Harry before heading off to confront Peter Pettigrew was pretty brave. So: daring, generous, brave – it was all pretty Sirius.

## When he and Lupin revealed that Scabbers was Peter Pettigrew

It’s difficult to identify one standout moment from the infamous Shrieking Shack scene, but the truth about Scabbers is up there. Sirius’s revelations about Crookshanks were also pretty incredible. A dog that was really a human, working hand-in-hand with a human-like-cat to unmask the biggest rat of them all? The mind boggles.

And when Pettigrew was forced to transform, unwillingly, back to his human form, it changed everything. It was also the first time we saw Sirius and Lupin working together and understood who the Marauders were. Pretty special.

## When he suggested Harry could come and live with him

The bond between Harry and Sirius was there from the minute Harry learnt the truth about Sirius’ involvement in his parents’ death, and of all the too-brief moments of hope that followed, this exchange was the most bittersweet:

> ‘Are you mad?’ said Harry, his voice easily as croaky as Sirius’.
> ‘Of course I want to leave the Dursleys! Have you got a house? When can I move in?’

> Sirius turned right around to look at him; Snape’s head was scraping the ceiling but Sirius didn’t seem to care.

It was not to be, of course. But we’re glad that, for one shining moment, they each got to enjoy the possibility.

## His protectiveness of Harry after the final Triwizard task

Sirius spent much of Harry’s fourth year looking out for Harry from afar. In fact, he was far more concerned for Harry than for his own safety – returning to the country as soon as he heard Harry’s scar was hurting, showing up in the Gryffindor common room fireplace, camping out in Hogsmeade. In contrast, his godfatherly advice to Harry was cautious: he even told him not to go out of bounds which, as Harry pointed out, was a bit rich given Sirius’ own school record.

But Sirius’ desire to protect Harry, regardless of the risk to his own safety, was always paramount. It was, after all, the reason he broke out of Azkaban in the first place. So when Sirius was able to comfort Harry in person after the terrible things he’d witnessed after the Triwizard task, it was a meaningful moment.

> ‘We can leave that ’til morning, can’t we, Dumbledore?’ said Sirius harshly. He had put a hand on Harry’s shoulder. ‘Let him have a sleep. Let him rest.’

## When he recognised Harry’s frustration

Harry’s arrival at Grimmauld Place might have been unceremonious, coming as it did after a summer at the Dursley’s and an unexpected Dementor attack, but it probably didn’t warrant the angry outburst he almost immediately unleashed on Hermione and Ron. And yet, there was one person who understood exactly how Harry felt: Sirius.

Like Harry, Dumbledore’s orders had left Sirius effectively imprisoned in a house that had never really been his home. The effect it had on him was stark. When Sirius was on the run, his attitude to Harry’s safety had been cautious, but as soon as Sirius himself felt restricted, things changed. He became far less careful, and while that caused issues later, it also allowed him to sympathise with Harry’s own feelings – a rare thing for Harry.

## His occasional words of wisdom

As Harry’s fifth year progressed, Sirius seemed to become even more reckless. His increased visits to the Gryffindor common room fire, his encouragement of Harry’s rule-breaking, his suggestion of a Hogsmeade visit – as the restlessness began to overtake him, he became more cavalier about even Harry’s safety.

But amongst the thoughtless behaviour, there were some wise words. This sentence in particular was one of our favourites:

> ‘…the world isn’t split into good people and Death Eaters.’

Yes, Sirius said that, not Dumbledore. We know, right?

## How happy he was when the Weasleys and Harry stayed for Christmas

Unless he was reminiscing about his school days or encouraging Harry to throw caution to the wind, it was rare to see Sirius smile. So his delight at having unexpected guests to stay over Christmas was perhaps the most touching moment of all. We’ll even forgive him that rendition of ‘God Rest Ye, Merry Hippogriffs.’

## Potions

You may think the debate of spells vs. potions is a very quick conversation – but think about it for a moment. The world of potion-making is fascinating, even if we had to learn about it through grumpy Severus Snape’s eyes most of the time. It’s true that casting spells is probably the top thing a witch or wizard is usually doing, magically-speaking, but there are certain potions that have ‘effects impossible to achieve any other way’ – [as J.K. Rowling explains in this piece of writing.](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/potions)

For example, without Polyjuice Potion, the potion that allows the drinker to turn into someone else, Harry, Ron and Hermione wouldn’t have been able to do numerous things pivotal to their adventures – such as getting into the Slytherin Common Room during *Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets*, or assuming the appearance of Ministry workers during *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows*. Sure, Transfiguration spells can change someone’s appearance as well, but to achieve a true likeness of someone else, you need the ‘essence’ of them, mixed up in the complex broth of a Polyjuice Potion.

That’s the thing about potions – some of them are complicated to make (and can result in a melted cauldron or two) but are usually extremely precise in their intentions, whether that’s creating an incredibly powerful truth serum or concocting a [Wolfsbane Potion](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/werewolves). There’s also a real sense of achievement when you’ve completed your brew of choice, the same joy a Muggle may get for perfecting the greatest cake.

Potions are also so versatile: they can be a medicine, a transformative solution or even a bit of a miracle – [Felix Felicis’s](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/web-13-times-golden-trio-felix-felicis) ability to make the drinker magically lucky is just something “foolish wand-waving” can’t achieve. Also, standing in front of a pewter cauldron, measuring your ingredients and stirring leisurely – you just look cool.

## Spells

Snape might have once referred to wand-waving as "foolish", but we would like to remind you that even the Potions Master himself understood the importance of spell-casting – after all, it was Snape who first taught Harry his signature move, [Expelliarmus](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/expelliarmus-exploring-harry-potters-signature-spell), during that infamous duelling session with Professor Lockhart. And where would Harry be, without Expelliarmus? Well, we all know the answer to that one.

See, we’re not saying potions don’t have their place, but they don’t exactly offer an instant solution. Let’s say you were facing an escaped troll, or a legion of Dementors, or – you know – Lord Voldemort. What would you rather have at your disposal: a wand and a few words, or an (extremely breakable) bottle of some potion full of disgusting ingredients? We know which we’d prefer. After all, if you’re staring down the barrel of an [Unforgivable Curse](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/what-is-the-worst-spell-from-the-wizarding-world) you’re not exactly going to be able to Polyjuice your way out. And anyway, who has time to wait for that to brew up?

Plus, be honest: the spells are what you think of when you think of Hogwarts. Wingardium Leviosa. Expecto Patronum. Even Avada Kedavra. There’s just something inherently mystical about the [rhythm of those words](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/the-etymology-of-harry-potter-spells), and if you pair them up with the right wand-arm action, well – that’s real magic.

Then there are those spells that don’t require either words or wand-waving. You know, the non-verbal ones Snape was so good at (because of course he was.) The kind of spell that you could do in your head, without anyone knowing, and see instantaneous results, without having to do something like... wait 21 days for a bunch of lacewings to stew. 

No, you can keep your disgusting ingredients and your pewter cauldrons – give us wands and words any day.

Exploring the villains (and less obvious villains) of the wizarding world

Spoiler warning: this article contains spoilers for *Harry Potter and the Cursed Child*.

## Gellert Grindelwald 

First up is the original villain; or at least, the one who appeared first in the history books. Grindelwald is slightly tricky, though, because for all his terrible deeds, he was a complicated character. Perhaps it was his relationship with Dumbledore, perhaps it was refusing to give up the Elder Wand to Voldemort, perhaps it was the remorse he apparently expressed in Nurmengard – whatever it is, he seemed less straightforwardly evil than, say, Voldemort.

But maybe we were just taken in by his infamous charm. Dumbledore was, after all. So was Queenie Goldstein. Not forgetting Credence Barebone, a vulnerable young man manipulated by a Dark Wizard to support his own sinister ideology…

Yes, on second thoughts, Grindelwald was pretty evil. Good thing we put him first on the list.

## Draco Malfoy

From the original dark wizard to the original school bully, Draco Malfoy was a villain in a Hogwarts cloak from the outset (literally, given we first met him in Madam Malkin’s robe shop.) OK, he wasn’t Death Eater-level in the end and, yes, you could say his family background gave him few options other than villainy, but did he have to take it quite so far? 

In *Cursed Child*, we saw an older, more chastened Draco Malfoy who cared deeply for his wife and only son, even if he struggled to express those feelings. But still. Ron in particular found it hard to forgive Malfoy for the terrible things he’d done. He called Hermione a Mudblood. Repeatedly. He nearly got Buckbeak killed, he did get Hagrid sacked, and even though he failed at the final hurdle, he let Death Eaters into Hogwarts which ultimately resulted in Dumbledore’s death. Sorry Draco, but we see Ron’s point. 

## Peter Pettigrew

Perhaps even worse than the relentless meanness of a bully is the unexpected betrayal of an old friend. Which brings us to Peter Pettigrew, the man who was a better rat than he was a wizard. From scurrying around in the dust kicked up by his stronger, more popular friends to serving the absolute worst villain on this list (we’re getting to him, but You Know Who we mean), Peter Pettigrew may not always have looked like the archetypal villain – indeed, Harry pictured him as a Neville Longbottom-type character – but the depth of his double-dealing knew no bounds. Put it this way: Peter Pettigrew could never have pulled the Sword of Gryffindor out of a hat.

## Dementors

We can’t name a single individual one, but as villains go the Dementors are right up there. Creepy cloak? Tick. Slimy, scabbed, claw-like hands? Tick. Loud, rasping, disturbing breaths? Tick. General aura of darkness and despair? Tick and tick. Peter Pettigrew may have been an unlikely villain but you absolutely could not say that about a Dementor. These were creatures that wanted to suck out your soul and kill every bit of joy. They literally brought the dark with them, wherever they went.

## Dolores Umbridge

Speaking of joy-thieves, she might have preferred to cloak herself in pink and fill her office with fluffy kittens, but Dolores Jane Umbridge was every bit as dark as the villainous figures she liked to surround herself with. Indeed, she was the one who sent Dementors to attack Harry in Little Whinging. And obviously it didn’t end there – Umbridge’s list of mean tricks was about as long as her list of Educational Decrees. Forcing Harry to write lines on his own skin, giving Filch approval to whip students, nailing Mad-Eye Moody’s eye to her office door, creating dangerous propaganda about Muggle-born witches and wizards. No, there was nothing fluffy about Dolores Umbridge. 

## Bellatrix Lestrange

Equally un-fluffy but far less bothered about hiding it, Bellatrix Lestrange was one of Voldemort’s Death-Eaters-in-chief. Seemingly devoid of any family feeling, she had no trouble murdering her own cousin, disowning her sister, and later killing Tonks, the daughter of that same sister, for having the audacity to marry a werewolf. Bellatrix did, however, feel huge affinity for her master. So fanatical was she in her loyalty to Voldemort that she willingly agreed to murder Tonks at his suggestion.

And of course it was not just her own family members Bellatrix tormented. She killed Dobby – poor Dobby – inflicted torture on Hermione, and drove Neville Longbottom’s parents insane. During the Battle of Hogwarts, seconds before she was killed by Molly Weasley, Bellatrix was said to be “*as mad as her master*,” and that’s not a description we would refute.

## Lord Voldemort

Which brings us to Bellatrix’s master himself. Tom Marvolo Riddle. The Dark Lord. He Who Must Not Be Named. You Know Who. Lord Voldemort. 

A true Dark Wizard and villain of the highest order, Voldemort was someone who turned all his own insecurities inside out, becoming fixated on pure-blood status at a disturbingly early age and harnessing his prodigious magical skill in pursuit of this dark ideology: tormenting anyone weaker, collecting followers, murdering those who didn’t fit into his vision. And of course there’s that whole splitting-your-soul-into-Horcruxes thing. 

Here’s a wizard who didn’t understand love, and who would never show remorse. That’s about as bad as it gets.

## Delphini Diggory

And sadly for Harry and his family, Voldemort’s ideals didn’t die with him. Years after Voldemort’s defeat, his daughter – the product not of a loving relationship, but of an apparently brief incident between a cruel and despotic leader and the fanatical, arguably insane, Bellatrix – would land in Harry’s life to wreak as much havoc as her parents. As Voldemort’s daughter, Delphi inherited many of her father’s obsessions, as well as his talent for charming others into carrying out her deeds and turning the world on its head. She liked a prophecy as much as her father, too. 

But where her father’s weakness was his inability to understand love, Delphi’s was almost the opposite. So desperate was she to see her father and so great her need for his approval, that it ultimately led to her downfall. So perhaps she wasn’t quite as villainous as either of her parents, in the end. 

Six times the Patronus Charm came in handy

## When Harry (unknowingly) cast a Patronus against Malfoy, Crabbe, Goyle and Marcus Flint

The first time Harry successfully cast a Patronus was during that Quidditch match against Ravenclaw. After weeks of hard work with a Boggart-Dementor that forced him to relive his mother’s death, this incredibly advanced spell suddenly came surprisingly easily to Harry – which was obviously because, as Lupin later informed him, it was not Dementors he was fighting, but Malfoy and his cronies:

‘You gave Mr Malfoy quite a fright,’ said Lupin.

Harry stared. Lying in a crumpled heap on the ground were Malfoy, Crabbe, Goyle and Marcus Flint, the Slytherin team captain, all struggling to remove themselves from long, black, hooded robes. It looked as though Malfoy had been standing on Goyle’s shoulders. Standing over them, with an expression of the utmost fury on her face, was Professor McGonagall.

‘An unworthy trick!’ she was shouting. ‘A low and cowardly attempt to sabotage the Gryffindor Seeker! Detention for all of you, and fifty points from Slytherin! I shall be speaking to Professor Dumbledore about this, make no mistake! Ah, here he comes now!’

As Patronus-casting exercises go it’s not life-saving, but it did help Harry’s Quidditch team secure an epic victory. We think that counts.

## When a time-turning Harry’s Patronus saved them all from the Dementors

Harry’s actual first Patronus was more impressive, even if it did initially cause some confusion – Harry saw his future self standing on the opposite bank; briefly thought he was some unlikely reincarnation of his own Dad; nearly suffered the Dementor’s kiss alongside Hermione and Sirius… well, it was all a bit of a muddle.

That is, until Harry-from-the-future (who, it turns out, really does look like his Dad) saved them all by successfully casting an actual Patronus, which scattered Dementors like skittles before ending with a bow. 

As Dumbledore later told Harry: “*‘Prongs rode again last night.’*” So that’s that cleared up.

## When Prongs saw off the Dementors in Little Whinging

By Harry’s fifth year he was a dab hand at the old Patronus charm, having also used it to charge a Boggart during the final Triwizard Tournament task. But nothing prepared him for the appearance of Dementors near the Dursley’s home in Little Whinging, the summer before he returned to Hogwarts. And yet, there they were, ready to leech life out of any human who crossed their path — even if that human was Dudley Dursley. 

Handy for Dudley, then, that Harry was such a dab hand with the old Patronus charm:

He had run barely a dozen steps when he reached them: Dudley was curled up on the ground, his arms clamped over his face. A second Dementor was crouching low over him, gripping his wrists in its slimy hands, prising them slowly, almost lovingly apart, lowering its hooded head towards Dudley’s face as though about to kiss him.

‘GET IT!’ Harry bellowed, and with a rushing, roaring sound, the silver stag he had conjured came galloping past him. The Dementor’s eyeless face was barely an inch from Dudley’s when the silver antlers caught it; the thing was thrown up into the air and, like its fellow, it soared away and was absorbed into the darkness; the stag cantered to the end of the alleyway and dissolved into silver mist.

Rescuing Dudley’s life also led to a thawing in relations between Harry and his cousin. Not that Harry realised at the time, but what greater way to show thanks than a nice cup of tea? Even if said tea was cold, left on the landing, and delivered by Dursley two years later. It’s still better than nothing.

## Every time anyone from the Order of the Phoenix used their Patronus to send messages 

Patronuses weren’t just useful for defeating Dementors – in a world where there was (apparently) no such thing as encrypted texts, they also provided a foolproof method of communication. Tonks used hers to let Dumbledore know Harry had been safely located on the Hogwarts Express, following his run-in with Malfoy. Kingsley Shacklebolt used his to let everyone at Bill and Fleur’s wedding know the Ministry had fallen. And during the Battle of Hogwarts, Professor McGonagall used hers to call the rest of the Heads of House to Harry’s aid. 

Because who wouldn’t want to receive a personalised message delivered by a shining silver animal? Much more attractive than a DM, if you ask us. Not to mention a lot more reliable.

## When Harry and Hermione’s Patronuses led Muggle-borns to safety from the Ministry of Magic

When Harry, Ron and Hermione entered the Ministry of Magic in their Polyjuice-Potion-enabled disguise, it was good news for those summoned to stand before the Muggle-born Registration Commission. Even disguised as a thoroughly mean wizard, Harry couldn’t stop himself from rescuing others:

Harry whirled round, throwing off the Invisibility Cloak; down below, the Dementors had moved out of their corners; they were gliding towards the woman chained to the chair: whether because the Patronus had vanished or because they sensed that their masters were no longer in control, they seemed to have abandoned restraint. Mrs Cattermole let out a terrible scream of fear as a slimy, scabbed hand grasped her chin and forced her face back.

‘EXPECTO PATRONUM!’

The silver stag soared from the tip of Harry’s wand and leapt towards the Dementors, which fell back and melted into the dark shadows again. The stag’s light, more powerful and more warming than the cat’s protection, filled the whole dungeon as it cantered round and round the room.

And for Mary Cattermole and the other Muggle-borns about to plead their case, Harry’s Patronus was a life-saver. Along with Hermione’s (slightly less corporeal) Otter Patronus, Prongs led the Muggle-borns out of the dungeon. Which was perhaps not the most discreet way to escape but, as always, you can’t fault Harry’s commitment to the rescue attempt.

But of course, it was not just Harry whose Patronus saved the day. 

With Harry and Hermione despondent after the events in Godric’s Hollow and Ron trying desperately to find his way back to them, it was Snape’s Patronus – the Silver Doe that was somehow familiar to Harry, perhaps because it recalled his mother’s own Patronus – that brought them back together. 

It also led Harry to the Sword of Gryffindor, without which they may not have been able to destroy the Horcrux-locket at all. So, pretty handy all round.
