## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

## The many wonderful romantic relationships 
Well, we can’t talk about love without mentioning all the brilliant couples in the wizarding world. There were Molly and Arthur who’d had a strong and loving partnership since their days at Hogwarts. Ron and Hermione whose relationship had been a slow burn from best friends into something more. Tonks and Remus who had to break down barriers, including Remus’ low self-esteem stemming from being a werewolf, to eventually be together. And Bill and Fleur, whose powerful connection eventually managed to change his family’s preconceived notions about her. And these are just a handful of the strong pairings found in the wizarding world – there are so many other excellent illustrations of romantic love. Many of these couples (if not all) also had to overcome forces that were trying to keep them apart – whether those obstacles were external like the rise of Voldemort, or internal such as their own stubbornness. Yet ultimately, they all demonstrated the enduring power of love.

## The love between families
If there is one example of love that really stands out, it is that of the families of the wizarding world. Whether they’re those related by blood or those that have chosen to be each other’s family. The Weasley clan definitely had a strong bond – even when it was tested by Percy’s estrangement. What made them doubly special, was how they were willing to welcome others into the fold with open arms (with the brief hesitation when it came to Fleur). Harry was welcomed as a bonus Weasley from when he was in first-year and Molly sent him one of her signature hand-knitted jumper for Christmas. And they weren’t the only family who truly demonstrated what love means – the Lovegoods also cared deeply for one another. When Luna was taken by the Death Eaters, Xenophilius would have done anything to get ger back, including going against all his principles and turning Harry over to the Death Eaters. There were also the Longbottoms who stuck together through adversity. There was Sirius who took his role as godfather to Harry incredibly seriously... we could go on and on. Though one thing is for certain, and that is family (in whatever form it took) was a powerful example of love in the wizarding world.

## The strong friendships in the magical world 
The power of friendship is something that should not be overlooked. After all, if it wasn’t for Harry Ron and Hermione’s bond, you could argue that Harry would not have been able to defeat Voldemort. Each of them brought something unique to their friendship, such as Harry’s bravery, Hermione’s cleverness and Ron’s loyalty. There is no doubt in our minds that they were always strongest when together. And they were by no means the only fantastic friendship to be found in the wizarding world. Seamus and Dean were rarely without one another for instance. Fred, George and Lee were the perfect pranking trio. Lily and Snape demonstrated you could be friends with someone from a different house. And without the four Marauders (yes, even Wormtail at one point), there would never have been the Marauder’s Map, which proved to be vital on more than one occasion. Platonic love can be just as strong as romantic love.

## Witches, wizards and magical creatures 
One form of the love in the wizarding world, that we want to shine a light on, is the bond between humans and magical creatures. Hagrid was someone who perfectly encapsulated this. He adored creatures of all kinds and always saw the good in them – even when many others could not. It took a certain kind of person to be doe-eyed over an Acromantula, three-headed dog, baby dragon or a Blast-Ended Skrewt and happily raise them – yet Hagrid managed to. Another person who had a deep affection for all fantastic beasts was Newt Scamander. As a Magizoologist his whole life was dedicated to creatures, and he always showed them respect and kindness. From the beasts he kept in his case, to the menagerie in his basement, you know that every single one of them was cared for and valued. We think that the love Hagrid and Newt had for every creature was incredibly pure and other people in the wizarding world could have learnt a lot from them.

## The many sacrifices characters made
When Lily Potter was killed by Voldemort, she invoked an ancient and incredibly powerful magic… love. It was the love she had for her son that made her willing to sacrifice her own life to save his. And it was that love that not only saved Harry from the Killing Curse when he was an infant, but also protected him from Voldemort until he was seventeen years old.

And Lily wasn’t the only one prepared to sacrifice themselves for those they cared about, this was something Harry did too. At the end of the Battle of Hogwarts he willingly went to meet Voldemort in the Forbidden Forest – knowing he was walking to his death. He knew that if he surrendered, he would save his friends, chosen family and those that were fighting with him. Luckily, we know he survived a second time – but at that moment he certainly didn’t.

Finally, another quieter sacrifice that we have to mention was when Hermione erased her parents’ memories of her and sent them to Australia. It was her love for them that drove her to do this. She knew that it was the only way to keep them safe from Voldemort while she embarked on the hunt for Horcruxes. Though it must have been unbearably painful for her, it was also a very brave and selfless thing for her to do.

## Love for the wizarding world 
Both times when Voldemort tried to make a grab for power, there were plenty of people who decided to stand against him and tried to defend the wizarding world. Whether they were in the Order of the Phoenix, Dumbledore’s Army, or just opposed Voldemort’s abhorrent views, they did what they could to protect the world that they cherished. They didn’t want it to become something that was rooted in hatred, fear and disdain for those who weren’t pure-bloods. And while the magical world had its faults and was in no way perfect, there were many that loved it because it was their home, and worth defending from evil.

## Kendra Dumbledore
Kendra was the wife of Percival and mother to Albus, Aberforth and Ariana. Her life was forever changed by the attack on her young daughter which left Ariana unable to control her magic. Not only did her husband end up being incarcerated in Azkaban, but the whole family had to move from Mould-On-The-Wold, to Godric’s Hollow to try and protect her youngest. Afraid that her daughter would be seen as a threat to the International Statute of Secrecy and locked up in St Mungo’s, Kendra kept Ariana hidden from the rest of the world. She spent her days trying to keep her calm and she only allowed her outside in the dead of night. Tragically, Kendra was accidentally killed when Ariana was fourteen and had one of her outbursts, leaving Albus to take care of his two younger siblings.

## Percival Dumbledore
Percival was the husband of Kendra Dumbledore and father to Albus, Aberforth and Ariana. Not much is known about him before the attack on his young daughter which changed the course of his life forever. He took revenge on the three Muggle boys who had permanently traumatised Ariana and was sent to Azkaban as a result. He never revealed to anyone why he had attacked the boys as he was afraid that if the truth came out, Ariana would be sent away forever – which led some people to speculate that he was just another wizard who hated Muggles. Percival ended up spending the rest of his life behind bars and died whilst he was in Azkaban.

## Albus Dumbledore
Where to begin with Albus Dumbledore? He was the oldest son of Kendra and Percival and older brother to Aberforth and Ariana. He was known as one of the most talented and brilliant wizards in the wizarding world and his achievements (including the discovery of the twelve uses of dragon’s blood) seemed to be endless. Although, he almost strayed off this path as a young man to go down a much darker road. 

After he left Hogwarts, Albus was set to go on a world tour with Elphias Doge when his mother suddenly died. He had no choice but to stay and take care of his two younger siblings. While he loved them, he resented having to look after them. It was during this period that he encountered Gellert Grindelwald, and they both began to dream up their ideas for reforming the magical world for ‘the greater good’ – which involved keeping Muggles subservient. They were also obsessed with the idea of the Deathly Hallows. Their intense relationship meant that Ariana was neglected, and they went their separate ways after the terrible argument between Gellert, Albus and Aberforth that ended in Ariana’s death and Grindelwald fleeing. 

Though Dumbledore eventually defeated Grindelwald in a duel, the circumstances surrounding the death of his younger sister stayed with him and influenced his future choices and decisions. He even turned down the position of Minister for Magic as he felt he should not be trusted with that kind of power. Instead, Dumbledore became a teacher and eventually held the post of Headmaster of Hogwarts. He was regarded as one of the greatest Headteachers that Hogwarts had ever had. There he taught everyone from Tom Riddle (who became Lord Voldemort) to Harry Potter. 

Dumbledore was instrumental in the defeat of a second Dark wizard – Lord Voldemort. He set up the Order of the Phoenix when Voldemort was first gaining power and was one of the most prominent figures to resist him. In fact, Dumbledore was the only wizard that Voldemort feared. He realised that this Dark wizard was not truly gone the night his Killing Curse failed to kill Harry. He also knew just how important Harry would be in bringing about his downfall. When Voldemort returned, Dumbledore immediately brought back the second iteration of the Order of the Phoenix. He was the one to realise that Voldemort was using Horcruxes and set out to destroy them – with help from Harry. Though he died before Voldemort was defeated, he set the wheels in motion that enabled Harry to kill him once and for all. 

After his death, Rita Skeeter may have tried to tarnish his memory with the awful book *The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore*, but to many he was still seen as one of the greatest magical figures to have ever lived.

## Aberforth Dumbledore
Aberforth was the middle child of Kendra and Percival, younger brother to Albus and older brother to Ariana. He was owner of the Hog's Head Inn in Hogsmeade and kept a much lower profile than his older brother – with whom things were rather strained. While their relationship was troubled, there was no doubt that Aberforth loved his sister deeply. Whenever he spoke about her, it was always with great fondness, and he seemed proud that he was the one that could always calm her down. It was her death that cemented the tense atmosphere between the two brothers. At Ariana’s funeral he even broke Albus’ nose. While they did reconcile as they grew older, old resentments kept a wedge between them. 

There was more to Aberforth than just the relationship he had with his family. He was widely known for love of goats, crochety personality and he played a key role in helping Harry Potter defeat Lord Voldemort. He was the one that sent Dobby to Malfoy Manor to help rescue Harry, Ron and Hermione. He sheltered them when they arrived in Hogsmeade just before the Battle of Hogwarts. He fought in the battle himself (though he did threaten to keep the students from Slytherin hostage). And he was critical in keeping Dumbledore’s Army going in Harry’s absence.

When members of the DA were forced into hiding in the Room of Requirement, Aberforth supplied them with food through a tunnel which suddenly appeared and was connected to his pub. That tunnel also allowed Hogwarts students to be evacuated before the fighting began, as well as allowing those who wished to fight (such as the Order of the Phoenix) to enter the castle. Though he wasn’t as famous as his brother, he was a hero in his own right.

## Ariana Dumbledore
Ariana was the daughter of Kendra and Percival and the younger sister of Albus and Aberforth, who lived a short and tragic life. When Ariana was just six years old, she was attacked by a group of Muggle boys who had spotted her doing magic in the back garden of her family home. That attack was incredibly brutal and left Ariana with irreparable damage. From that moment on she didn’t want to use magic again, but she also couldn’t rid herself of it. Her magical ability ‘turned inwards’ and according to her brother Aberforth, she was ‘driven mad’ by it. When she lost control, magic would explode out of her which meant that she could be dangerous at times. Sadly, as we mentioned previously, it was during one of her rages that her mother was accidentally killed. 

After that, her brother Albus took care of her – with a lot of help from Aberforth (who was supposedly her favourite sibling). However, when Grindelwald came into their lives, hers was cut short. In an argument between Albus, Grindelwald and Aberforth that turned into a duel, Ariana lost control once again. Aberforth believed she just wanted to help but didn’t know how to and ended up dead in the commotion. Nobody can be sure who cast the final curse that ended up killing her, but when Harry spoke to Dumbledore in King’s Cross after being hit with Voldemort’s Killing Curse for a second time, he hinted it was most likely Grindelwald. The death of Ariana had a profound effect on her both of her siblings and arguably influenced their actions for the rest of their lives.

## Aurelius Dumbledore
And here's something to chew over. According to Gellert Grindelwald, Credence Barebone is actually the long-lost brother of Albus, Aberforth and Ariana, as was revealed at the end of *Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald*. But whether or not he's telling the truth remains to be seen...

From the moment that Jacob and Queenie met in *Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them*, they certainly had chemistry. Jacob was won over by Queenie’s charm, ability to read minds and beauty. Not only that, as a baker, he also appreciated her magical apple strudel. In return, Queenie was fascinated by this No-Maj who seemed to take being flung into the magical world in his stride, having never really interacted with one before. 

Before long, their relationship developed from mutual curiosity into something real and they forged a romantic connection. Even Jacob’s memories being wiped at the end of the first film couldn’t keep them apart, and they soon managed to find their way back to one another.

This was a pair that truly seemed to belong together. They complimented each other and brought out each of their best sides. The majority of their interactions were adorable, from the time Jacob was trying to act cool and flirt with Queenie in a speakeasy (despite the effects of Gigglewater), to Queenie coming into Jacob’s bakery after his memory was erased just to see him. What was clear is that if it were up to them, they would have happily spent their lives together.

However, we soon came to learn that circumstances always seemed to be conspiring against these two. Specifically, what could be considered the rather outdated laws of the American wizarding community. Unfortunately for Jacob and Queenie, the US had a no fraternisation rule between the magical community and the No-Maj one. No No-Maj was allowed to know about the magical world and a witch or wizard certainly wasn’t allowed to marry one or start a family with them. This was one of the first things that put a terrible strain on the couple and was arguably what sent Queenie down a dark path.

By the time it came to *Crimes of Grindelwald*, Queenie’s desperation had intensified, and she was willing to do things that we would never condone to ensure that she and Jacob ended up together. It was completely wrong of Queenie to take Jacob to London to be married while he was under the influence of an enchantment. All that resulted in was the cracks between these two widening and her sense of hopelessness increasing. It was that vulnerability and frustration at their situation which made her the perfect target for Grindelwald. By the time she walked through the flames, she was completely brainwashed by him and was convinced that this was her only option to be with the one she loved.

Yet we can’t help but root for this couple. We know that Queenie joining Grindelwald’s cause was wrong. We know that realistically it would be difficult for the pair of them to reconcile after such an event. But if anyone can get through to Queenie and convince her to change her mind, it’s Jacob. It was her desire to be with him when faced with the harsh rules of MACUSA that made her susceptible to Grindelwald’s spiel. And while she has to take responsibility for her poor choices, if she does, then we hope that she and can get a second chance. After all, Queenie is not the first person to be hoodwinked by Grindelwald – even Dumbledore believed in him once.

We also reckon that there is still hope for them as a couple. Obviously, we don’t know what will happen as the story goes on, but we don’t think that Jacob is quite ready to give up on her just yet. In the first trailer for *The Secrets of Dumbledore*, he seems to be fully invested in the fight against Grindelwald and we wonder whether a lot of that was motivated by his desire to try and help Queenie. We hope that if he does manage to be reunited with her, that she is reachable and willing to listen to reason. 

If the pair of them were to get back together, you never know, it could help to change the way that MACUSA viewed No-Maj and wizarding relations. Especially as, if successful, they would owe Jacob a debt for helping to bring down one of the most infamous Dark wizards of all time. If they were allowed to be together, their relationship could pave the way for a new era of the American wizarding community. 

However, all this aside, we just believe that these two are happiest and strongest when together. They make sense as a couple and we truly hope that this is just a blip in what should be a long and happy future together.

## Her disdain for magic was actually jealousy 
If you were to name two people who hated the magical community with all their heart, Mr and Mrs Dursley would spring straight to mind. Yet, that wasn’t always Petunia’s view. While she acted like her hatred of witches and wizards came from them being what she saw as abnormal – she had yearned to belong to the community herself. Petunia was incredibly jealous of Lily’s magical ability and hated that her magical sister always seemed to be the centre of attention. When she married Vernon, she didn’t want Lily to be a bridesmaid because she was tired of being overshadowed by her. And as children, she called Lily a ‘freak’ because she was upset that she didn’t have the same gifts. While none of that is an excuse for Petunia’s behaviour, it does give an insight into her rejection of anything remotely magical.

## She wrote to Albus Dumbledore as a child
Petunia didn’t just keep her magical aspirations to herself, she actually asked Albus Dumbledore if she could join Hogwarts. Unfortunately, as she had no magical ability, the kindly headmaster had to gently rebuff her. While that was a humiliating blow for Petunia (or ‘Tuney’ as she was known then), it could have been something she got over quietly and privately. However, Lily and Snape found her letter and read it – furthering her humiliation. When Petunia discovered what they had done, she lashed out at her sister and that was when she first called her a ‘freak’. Unfortunately for the Evans sisters, that was a moment when their relationship really began to sour.

## Lily and Petunia tried to have a relationship as adults
Though the bond between the two sisters was strained – and Petunia would probably have you believe she wanted nothing to with the witch in her family – they did actually try to have a relationship when they were adults. In fact, when Petunia became engaged to Vernon, they met James and Lily for a meal at a restaurant. However, the meeting was not a success and culminated in the future Mr and Mrs Dursley storming out. They never managed to quite make up after that. Even though the Potters did attend the wedding, the Dursleys refused to reciprocate and attend theirs. Yet, having known the Petunia we met in the books, the fact that she ever tried to see her sister as an adult is rather surprising.

One of Petunia Dursley’s biggest secrets was the promise she made to Albus Dumbledore. When James and Lily were killed at the hand of Voldemort and Harry was dropped off on the doorstep of 4 Privet Drive, there was a letter accompanying him. Dumbledore explained in the note that Lily had sacrificed her life for her son and by doing so had invoked an ancient and powerful magic. As Lily’s last remaining blood relative, if Petunia were to take Harry in it would seal the enchantment and provide him with protection from Voldemort. This would last as long as he could call the place where his mother’s blood existed his home. Despite her animosity towards her sister, Petunia took in the infant Harry, and he was able to call Privet Drive home – albeit an unhappy one – until his seventeenth birthday. Petunia never seemed to share with anyone what Albus Dumbledore’s letter had contained and so kept the one good thing she had done all to herself. And she did keep her promise – even when it took a Howler from Dumbledore crying ‘Remember my last’ to remind her of it.

## She seemed to know more about the wizarding world than she liked to let on
Petunia might have preferred to pretend that, like her husband Vernon, she knew nothing of the wizarding world but that wasn’t strictly true. While she was obviously ignorant to a lot of things – like her belief that she could squash the magic out of her nephew – it seemed that Mrs Dursley had more of an understanding than she cared to share, and it wasn’t just the knowledge of the protective enchantment left by Lily’s sacrifice. In *Order of the Phoenix*, after Harry and Dudley had faced a couple of Dementors, Petunia let slip that they were the guards of the wizarding prison Azkaban. Though she was immediately mortified that she had said that, it showed us that no matter how much she tried to ignore the wizarding world she wasn’t completely oblivious to its existence.

## First things first, he has Lily’s eyes
Well, we had to mention it didn’t we? Harry may have had his dad’s dark messy hair and overall appearance, but his bright green eyes were very much Lily’s. It felt like everyone who saw them couldn’t help but make that comparison. When Harry went to buy his first wand Ollivander brought it up. In *Prisoner of Azkaban*, Dumbledore also commented on the resemblance – though he did say he was sure Harry was tired of hearing it. Finally, when Snape lay dying, he asked Harry to look at him, so he could gaze into Lily’s eyes once again before he passed away. Though Harry sadly had to grow up without his parents, whenever he looked in the mirror, he could see a small part of each of them.

## They both had a Muggle upbringing 
One thing that Harry and his mother had in common is that they both grew up without knowledge of the wizarding world. As children, they would have gone through life thinking that strange things seemed to happen to them, and they were able to do stuff that others couldn’t – yet they would have no idea what it all meant. It wasn’t until Snape told Lily who she was, and Hagrid told Harry, that they discovered their true place in the world. You could also say that this time without magic gave them the advantage of being able to move easily between both wizarding and Muggle worlds - unlike some of their pure-blood loved ones such as James and Ron.

However, we also have to acknowledge the stark differences in their childhood experiences. While Lily grew up in a loving home with both her parents, Harry was an orphan left with the horrible Dursleys. Lily was loved and cherished by a family that ended up being incredibly proud that she was a witch, while Harry spent his formative years with people who treated him terribly and tried to squash the magic out of him.

## They can’t stand bullies 
We hate to say it, but Harry’s dad could be described as a bit of a bully. He tormented Snape and had a mean streak. Thankfully this was something that Harry didn’t inherit from his father. Instead, he had a kinder nature like his mother. The pair of them did not tolerate nasty or belittling behaviour. When Harry accidentally witnessed Snape’s memories and saw James being truly awful to him, he was actually ashamed of his dad. He didn’t find it funny or laugh along with him. Instead, he had the same reaction as Lily, who was furious. Who can forget how she berated James when she found him hanging the young Severus upside down by his leg?  

Similarly, during his school days, Harry wasn’t willing to associate with those he saw as bullies. After meeting Draco Malfoy and hearing his awful comments about Hagrid and the Weasley family, he firmly declined Malfoy’s offer of friendship. He also comforted those who were subject to Malfoy’s cruelty. He memorably told Neville that he was worth twelve of Malfoy after a nasty incident when Draco has cast a Leg-Locker Curse on him. It’s safe to say that both Harry and Lily had their hearts in the right place and were motivated by kindness.
