## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

## If you’re the sort of person who likes to look up the menu and decide your order before you go to the restaurant, you’d be like Ron 

What’s the best thing about the feast? The feasting, of course! Ron knew the score. He was always to be spotted tucking into Hogwarts’ bountiful food selections during a feast – to the extent Hermione once asked him if he ever stops eating. We can’t blame Ron, though. After years of Mrs Weasley’s delicious dinners, no wonder he is a food-lover! This lad simply appreciates the culinary delights the world has to offer, and if you’re drawn to this section, you relate to him. We have always wanted to join the Hogwarts Great Hall feasts too – the book descriptions of the food were always so mouth-watering. Our kingdom for a flaming Christmas pudding!

## If you’re constantly schmoozing, you’d be like Percy 

Some people shirk small-talk at parties, but not you. Every social event is an opportunity to make a new friend – or depending on the occasion – take a step up the job ladder if you meet the right person. This was very much Percy’s prerogative, especially during the Yule Ball where he was representing Barty Crouch to absolutely anyone who would listen. But while Percy could be overbearing at times, you’ve got to respect his hustle! Percy knew how to get ahead in life, even if he sometimes lost his head in the process. We can definitely understand you wanting to meet as many people as humanly possible at Hogwarts feasts – you certainly get a lot of interesting characters there. 

## If social situations cause you great anxiety, you’d be like young Derek 

Maybe you read the Percy section thinking, “Nope, can’t relate. Talking to people is terrible,” – so perhaps you’re more in tune with Derek the nervous first-year. Derek was a young lad who found himself in a very bizarre Christmas dinner situation in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. After a wider berth of Hogwarts students flocked home for the holidays (Sirius Black had tried to break into the castle a few months prior, remember) Dumbledore hosted a more-modest feast for the remaining students, which included Harry and poor Derek. And when the mighty headmaster of Hogwarts, Supreme Mugwump, Chief Warlock and holder of an Order of Merlin, first class, offers you some chipolatas – you can’t blame Derek for being shocked to the core by such a moment. 

## If you are louder than life itself, you’d be like Fred & George 

Do you like to bring the party? Easy – you’re Fred and George, who also liked to provide a bit of pizzazz to the Hogwarts feasts when they weren’t hosting rambunctious parties in the Gryffindor common room. Often known to put their stamp on proceedings (whether that’s singing Hoggy Warty Hogwarts as a slow funeral march or simply yelling out “You’re joking!” during Dumbledore’s Triwizard Tournament announcement) – the Weasley twins brought energy to wherever they were. Even during exam season, they made quite the statement thanks to a couple of fireworks and some portable swamps. Maybe this all reminds you of yourself a little bit. Because without you, things might be a tad quieter, but life would also be way less fun! 

## If you simply love hosting, you’d be like Albus Dumbledore 

Maybe you’d rather be the one dishing out the Hors-d'œuvres rather than chomping on them? If so, you strike us as a natural host – the one who holds everything together and makes sure everyone is fed, watered and entertained. This was very much Dumbledore’s job at Hogwarts, who kicked off proceedings with a few words (sometimes these words were just, “Nitwit, Blubber, Oddment, Tweak”) and set the tone for these fabulous occasions. At the Yule Ball, he kindly showed everyone how to order food to their plates (simply say what you want!) and always made sure the feasts of Hogwarts felt that little bit more magical. If you like to bring your own spark to your own dinner parties, we see a lot of Dumbledore in you.

## When Harry walked out to face his dragon in the first task
This was the moment when the Triwizard tournament truly became real. We can’t begin to imagine just how terrified Harry would have been to walk out into that crowd… coming face to face with a giant dragon wouldn’t have helped things either.

>He saw everything in front of him as though it was a very highly coloured dream. There were hundreds and hundreds of faces staring down at him from stands which had been magicked there since he’d last stood on this spot. And there was the Horntail, at the other end of the enclosure, crouched low over her clutch of eggs, her wings half furled, her evil, yellow eyes upon him, a monstrous, scaly black lizard, thrashing her spiked tail, leaving yard-long gouge marks in the hard ground.

## When Harry took to the skies 
It was exhilarating when we realised that Harry’s Summoning Charm had worked. Suddenly, he was able to play to his strengths on the back of a broomstick. This was the moment we knew that he had a real chance as a competitor in the tournament – if he could just harness those excellent Seeker skills of his.

>He swung his leg over the broom, and kicked off from the ground. And a second later, something miraculous happened...
>
>As he soared upwards, as the wind rushed through his hair, as the crowd’s faces became mere flesh-coloured pinpricks below, and the Horntail shrank to the size of a dog, he realised that he had left not only the ground behind, but also his fear... he was back where he belonged...

>This was just another Quidditch match, that was all... just another Quidditch match, and that Horntail was just another ugly opposing team...

## When Harry successfully retrieved the golden egg (and in the quickest time too)
Harry had a hard time before the first task. Many of his fellow Hogwarts students weren’t exactly rooting for him (even Ron). Therefore, when he managed to snatch the golden egg from the clutches of an angry Hungarian Horntail, it was brilliant. What made this moment even better, was that he finally seemed to have won over the rather hostile crowd. 

>And then she reared, spreading her great black leathery wings at last, as wide as those of a small aeroplane – and Harry dived. Before the dragon knew what he had done, or where he had disappeared to, he was speeding towards the ground as fast as he could go, towards the eggs now unprotected by her clawed, front legs – he had taken his hands off his Firebolt – he had seized the golden egg –

>And with a huge spurt of speed, he was off, he was soaring out over the stands, the heavy egg safely under his uninjured arm, and it was as though somebody had just turned the volume back up – for the first time, he became properly aware of the noise of the crowd, which was screaming and applauding as loudly as the Irish supporters at the World Cup

## When Harry and Ron made up 
It was awful when Harry and Ron weren’t speaking to one another. Fuelled by Ron’s jealousy, they spent a good few weeks giving each other the silent treatment – and it probably drove poor Hermione up the wall. We were absolutely ecstatic when they buried the hatchet after the first task… and in such a typically teenage way too. 

>‘Harry,’ he said, very seriously, ‘whoever put your name in that Goblet – I – I reckon they’re trying to do you in!’
>
>It was as though the last few weeks had never happened – as though Harry was meeting Ron for the first time, right after he’d been made champion.
>
>‘Caught on, have you?’ said Harry coldly. ‘Took you long enough.’
>
>Hermione stood nervously between them, looking from one to the other. Ron opened his mouth uncertainly. Harry knew Ron was about to apologise and, suddenly, he found he didn’t need to hear it.

>‘It’s OK,’ he said, before Ron could get the words out. ‘Forget it.’

## When Harry grew gills
Harry had real trouble figuring out how he was going to hold his breath for an hour underwater. Despite his and Hermione’s research, it seemed like he was never going to solve that puzzle. Even when Dobby presented Harry with Gillyweed, we were still rather sceptical that it would work out. In that brief moment, after the task had started and he’d waded into the water, we were worried he was about to face a humiliating defeat. However, as soon as the Gillyweed kicked in and Harry sprouted gills, we knew he was back in the game.

>The first gulp of icy lake water felt like the breath of life. His head had stopped spinning; he took another great gulp of water and felt it pass smoothly through his gills, sending oxygen back to his brain. He stretched out his hands in front of him and stared at them. They looked green and ghostly under the water, and they had become webbed. He twisted around and looked at his bare feet – they had become elongated and his toes were webbed, too; it looked as though he had sprouted flippers.

## When we met the merpeople for the first time
The lake at Hogwarts was something of a mystery before the second task. We knew there was a giant squid that lurked there, but we didn’t know what else was beneath the surface. It was incredibly cool to see what else dwelled in those waters – and it was fascinating to meet the merpeople and see how and where they lived. 

>The merpeople had greyish skins and long, wild, dark green hair. Their eyes were yellow, as were their broken teeth, and they wore thick ropes of pebbles around their necks. They leered at Harry as he swam past; one or two of them emerged from their caves to watch him better, their powerful, silver fishtails beating the water, spears clutched in their hands.

## When Harry tried to save Ron and Hermione
We liked that Harry wanted to save both of his best friends. His determination to free them both showed that he didn’t really value one above the other. While Ron was the person he was supposed to rescue, it didn’t stop Harry from putting up a good old fight to free Hermione too. 

>At once, several pairs of strong grey hands seized him. Half-a-dozen mermen were pulling him away from Hermione, shaking their green-haired heads and laughing.
>
>‘You take your own hostage,’ one of them said to him. ‘Leave the others...’
>
>‘No way!’ said Harry furiously – but only two large bubbles came out.
>
>‘Your task is to retrieve your own friend... leave the others...’

>‘She’s my friend, too!’ Harry yelled, gesturing towards Hermione, an enormous silver bubble emerging soundlessly from his lips. ‘And I don’t want them to die, either!’

## When Harry showed ‘moral fibre’
It’s hard to argue that Harry doesn’t have a bit of a hero complex. While we all know that there was no way any of the hostages would have been allowed to die, Harry didn’t seem to grasp that. Yet, despite his antics, which saw him rescuing Fleur’s sister Gabrielle, it still seemed to work out for him. He certainly impressed most of the judges if their comments and scores were anything to go by…

>‘Mr Harry Potter used Gillyweed to great effect,’ Bagman continued. ‘He returned last, and well outside the time limit of an hour. However, the Mer-chieftainess informs us that Mr Potter was first to reach the hostages, and that the delay in his return was due to his determination to return all hostages to safety, not merely his own.’

>Ron and Hermione both gave Harry half-exasperated, half- commiserating looks.
>
>‘Most of the judges’ – and here, Bagman gave Karkaroff a very nasty look – ‘feel that this shows moral fibre and merits full marks. However… Mr Potter’s score is forty-five points.’

## When Bill and Mrs Weasley came to wish Harry luck in the first task 
Ok, so while strictly speaking this was before the third task, it was such a heart-warming moment we had to include it. When the champions were told that family members would be there to wish them luck before the final task, Harry didn’t expect anyone to come and cheer him on – there’s no way the Dursleys would ever have done that. To find that he had Bill and Mrs Weasley in his corner was especially moving, and a sign that he was part of the Weasley clan.

>‘Surprise!’ Mrs Weasley said excitedly, as Harry smiled broadly, and walked over to them. ‘Thought we’d come and watch you, Harry!’ She bent down and kissed him on the cheek.

>‘You all right?’ said Bill, grinning at Harry and shaking his hand. ‘Charlie wanted to come, but he couldn’t get time off. He said you were incredible against the Horntail.’

## When we saw one of Hagrid’s beloved Skrewts again
Hagrid’s Blast-Ended Skrewts really were unappealing beasts, and we can imagine that the last thing Harry wanted to do was face this faceless monster. Though at least they finally seemed to have some kind of purpose…

>Cedric was right – it was enormous. Ten feet long, it looked more like a giant scorpion than anything. Its long sting was curled over its back. Its thick armour glinted in the light from Harry’s wand, which he pointed at it.

>‘*Stupefy!*’
>
>The spell hit the Skrewt’s armour, and rebounded; Harry ducked just in time, but could smell burning hair; it had singed the top of his head. The Skrewt issued a blast of fire from its end, and flew forwards towards him.

## When Harry met a sphinx 
This was a moment where Harry proved that he had logical thinking skills to rival Hermione’s (well… almost). Coming up against this impressive creature must have been rather intimidating, but Harry held his own and managed to solve the riddle set by this imperious beast. 

>It was a sphinx. It had the body of an overlarge lion; great clawed paws, and a long yellowish tail ending in a brown tuft. Its head, however, was that of a woman. She turned her long, almond-shaped eyes upon Harry as he approached. He raised his wand, hesitating. She was not crouching as if to spring, but pacing from side to side of the path, blocking his progress.

## When Harry and Cedric decided to win the Triwizard Tournament together
This moment is so bittersweet – especially as we know what happened after they picked up the Triwizard Cup. Harry and Cedric had both helped each other out at various points throughout the tournament, so it was lovely when they both decided to share the glory and bring home a joint Hogwarts victory. It undoubtedly showed the strength of both of their characters.

>‘Both of us,’ Harry said.
>
>‘What?’
>
>‘We’ll take it at the same time. It’s still a Hogwarts victory. We’ll tie for it.’
>
>Cedric stared at Harry. He unfolded his arms. ‘You – you sure?’
>
>‘Yeah,’ said Harry. ‘Yeah... we’ve helped each other out, haven’t we? We both got here. Let’s just take it together.’

>For a moment, Cedric looked as though he couldn’t believe his ears; then his face split in a grin.

## The flying keys through the trapdoor…
One of the most obvious times when keys played an important role was when Harry, Ron and Hermione went through the trapdoor to rescue the Philosopher’s Stone. The Hogwarts professors had each set a challenge they needed to successfully navigate, and the winged keys were Flitwick’s creation. The room was full of these fluttering flying objects – but only one allowed them to unlock the door and proceed to the next obstacle. Luckily, there were a couple of broomsticks handy, and Harry just so happened to be an incredibly talented Seeker with a knack for spotting small things. So, the three of them made quite quick work of that challenge and were able to thwart Quirrell and Voldemort.

## You couldn’t get into your Gringotts vault without a key…
Gringotts is a bank with very tight security. According to Hagrid Gringotts is the safest place in the world (except maybe Hogwarts) and ‘yeh’d be mad ter try an’ rob it’. Made up of a massive labyrinth of underground tunnels with spells, enchantments and even dragons guarding the vaults, you could only get your hands on what was inside if it belonged to you. To gain access, more often than not, you needed a key. When Harry visited for the first time with Hagrid, his key unlocked his vault, revealed a small fortune that the Dursleys couldn’t plunder and suddenly he didn’t have to rely on them anymore. That key helped him to become part of the wizarding world.

## Portkeys unlocked new experiences in the wizarding world…
While Portkeys aren’t physical keys – they’re actually often things that can be mistaken for junk – they do unlock new experiences. Who knew that a manky old boot, or a blackened kettle could contain such power? Harry had a few experiences with these objects – and each was completely different. His first experience led him to the Quidditch World Cup, where he saw the wizarding community come together at a showstopping event. However, the next one he encountered was the Triwizard Cup, which took him and Cedric to that terrible graveyard where Cedric was killed, and Harry watched Voldemort regain a body. He also used one in *Order of the Phoenix*, after he witnessed the attack on Arthur Weasley. Whether good, bad or horrific – his experiences with Portkeys opened him up to new adventures.

## Keys allowed Barty Crouch junior to unleash his horrible plan…
In *Goblet of Fire*, we think we meet the legendary Mad-Eye Moody. For nearly a whole year Harry and his friends believed that they were taught by him – learning all about Unforgivable Curses and other fascinating (if gruesome) topics. However, things weren’t as they seemed. Their Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher was the Death Eater Barty Crouch junior. He had been posing as the celebrated Auror all year and had been swigging Polyjuice Potion to keep his disguise. In fact, the real Moody had been held prisoner in Crouch’s trunk, which had many different compartments… and many different keys. It was only when Dumbledore placed the seventh key in the lock that we discovered the real Alastor Moody. To keep someone as skilled as him hostage is no mean feat, and that horrible trunk was how he did it. If he hadn’t been kept under lock and key, Crouch wouldn’t have been able to enact his evil plan which helped to bring Voldemort back to power.

## The Dursleys were a fan of keys…
The odious Dursleys were big fans of locking up any links to the wizarding world. Whether it was Harry’s schoolbooks and broomstick in the cupboard under the stairs during the summer holidays, or Harry himself after the incident with Dobby and the pudding – they tried to keep magic squashed and hidden. Though as we know, they weren’t successful in any of their attempts. From Harry picking the lock to retrieve his school things, or Fred, George, Ron and a flying Ford Anglia ripping the bars off Harry’s bedroom window to take him to The Burrow – the Dursleys found that there was no key that could keep the wizarding world shut out for too long.

__What inspired you to create this artwork?__

I wanted to knit a cowl for my poodle, Nimbus, that would feature the Nimbus 2000 and other things I loved from Harry Potter. I was also inspired by an amazing collection of yarn from the indie dyer, Treehouse Knits, who handdyed all of the yarns used in the cowl.

__Do you remember the first time you watched Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone?__

"I saw it in the theaters with my friends! It was one of the first movies I saw without my parents, if not the first. Amazing memories! It’ll always be just as magical as the first time I saw it."

__What inspired you to create this artwork?__

I was inspired to create this artwork by the magical imagery that I saw in the movie and the books. There were some of the moments that stood out to me the most and really made me feel I was there in the magic.

__Do you remember the first time you watched Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone?__

Yes, I do remember the first time I watched *Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone*. My Godmother brought both my older brother and I to the cinema to see the movie and I remember being so excited after reading the book. I really fell in love with everything the movie brought to life; the scenes, the characters, the magic. Since then, I've watched it more times than I can count.

__What inspired you to create this artwork?__

*Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone* has always held a special place in my heart, and so has John Hurt. This scene in the film was always the most magical for me and brings back warm memories, I wanted to capture the wonder of this moment within this fan art.

The very first time I watched *Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone* was at the cinema with my grandmother and uncle. It brings back really happy family memories for me.I loved every second of the film and it has always remained a favourite of mine.

__What inspited you to create this artwork?__

I absolutely love all Harry Potter books and the movies. When I first saw the movies I felt like I identified with Hermione, since I am a nerd myself. So whenever I have the opportunity, I like to draw scenes from this magical story, its wonderful characters and make them come to life again.

Yes I do! When I got out of the movie theatre, I was in awe. I felt like everything I had read in the Harry Potter books was real and I couldn't believe it. Magic was real! And of course I was in love with all the characters. It was a wonderful experience.

This artwork was created through participation of the #potterweekprompts hashtag. This time, our theme was transformation. I didn’t want to draw something like a werewolf or Transfiguration class with Professor McGonagall - and then I remembered this funny scene.

Actually no, I was so young. Moreover, I have a tradition to rewatch all Harry Potter movies every year when New Year is coming, so my impressions are blurred a little bit.

Three weeks ago I watched Harry Potter for the first time. I plunged into this incredible fairy tale and it inspired me.

I put this picture on paper because I wanted to give the little things in Harry Potter a bigger focus, because I'm in love with detail. I used to fall in love with the flying keys and so I created my very own key.

I remember exactly how I sat in the cinema, I was so excited. The film captivated me at the first second, it was magical, as it has never existed before in this way. Yes, very vividly! The Wizarding World captured by the movie was way beyond what I had imagined as a reader. It was also when I realised I was mispronouncing Hermione!

__What inspired you to create this artwork?__

This year I was a part of a yearly drawing challenge called Inktober in which artists all over the world follow a prompt list for each day of October. This artwork was inspired by the prompt “alchemy” that made me instantly think of *Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone*. I actually watched the movie while I was drawing for some further inspiration and because I love it so much!

Yes! I was about 4 years old and I remember becoming instantly obsessed with the Harry Potter universe. From that day on, I would pick up any stick that I could find and pretend it was a wand waving it and saying “Wingardium Leviosa”. Oh, I miss those days!

To me, this door was the entrance to another world, the world of endless possibilities and the world of escape. So it was a reminder of my first visit to Warner Bros. Studio Tour. I remember standing before the door and thinking wow, I am finally here - home at last. I found no better way to immortalise that moment than to sketch it in my own specific way. And Voila!

The first time I watched *Philosopher's Stone* was when I was 10. Almost 20 years ago. It was at home, during the summer, on the telly. That was all it took to make me fall in love with this world. Ironically, I started the books after the movies. They've both been such a huge part of my life and they will never stop being one. Even as I remember that I am going to turn 30 in a month, I still jump at the chance to watch Harry get off the boat and enter the castle. After all this time? Always.

__What inspired you to create this artwork?__

I must say that all the Harry Potter movies inspire me, I have re-watched them many times and it never gets old for me. There are so many amazing scenes to choose from, but my main inspiration comes from the theme music. The music is one of the most alluring things about the movie. It captivates you in a magical way. The melodies evoke such powerful emotions and takes me to another dimension as soon as the first note rings. That's why I created a floating dimension with the main characters and moments that represents the movie from my point of view.

The enchanting illustrations of *Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone* changed the world. It opened the door to a magical place that we all wanted to be a part of. I remember the first time I watched it because I felt that there was a greater meaning behind the story that spoke to me, besides the amazing scenery of course.The metaphors show the good and bad we experience in life and how we can grow from it.

On my make-up, I wanted to represent and transmit all of my love and history about Harry Potter. Also I wanted to mix it with my life passion, make-up.

Actually, I can't because when *Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone* came out I was like 1 year old. But my brother told me that my parents bought him the movie and that's when I watched it for first time.

__What inspired you to create this artwork?__

I re-read the Harry Potter series every summer (and have done for 6 years now) and am currently listening to the audiobooks with my partner. As we would finish an audiobook, we would watch a movie together. As we finished watching *Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone* together and the movie closed out on this final shot of the Hogwarts Express departing Hogsmeade and Hagrid heading back up to Hogwarts castle, I decided I'd paint this scene for him as a gift for listening to the books with me.

Not the first time, but definitely the most recent time with my partner - that inspired this artwork.

I was reading the Harry Potter saga during the lockdown, and I remember I just wanted to draw Hermione's fluffy hair and pronounced teeth since I found them so cute!

The first time I saw *Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone* was on TV when I was about 10 years old, but the time I remember most clearly is when I was about 16 together with my sister - that's when we became so passionate about the Harry Potter world and the magic began.

I started reading Harry Potter when I was 10 before it was “Harry Potter”. I’ve grown up with the books and movies constantly in my life. I’ve loved going to the releases of the books and movies, and now as an adult I’m still a huge fan!

I remember I was in elementary school when the first movie came out. I had already read the books and I was so excited to see the movie bring the books to life.

Bonnie Wright spent ten years fully immersed in the world of Harry Potter and brought an important character to life. As it’s the 20th anniversary of the *Philosopher’s Stone*, we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to ask Bonnie 20 questions about her time as Ginny Weasley. We certainly learnt a lot, from who was the funniest on set to what she loved about her character and even which other Hogwarts house might take her fancy.

## 1.	Firstly, we know you’re a Gryffindor but what would your second choice be?

Slytherin! Why not give the other side a turn?

## 2.	How does it feel knowing that the *Philosopher’s Stone* was released 20 years ago? 

Honestly, I still can’t believe it. I think because it is still loved by so many people it feels like it came out yesterday. 

## 3.	Were you surprised at just how popular *Philosopher’s Stone* (and subsequent movies) became? 

Yes, which I shouldn’t have been really because we all know the books are so brilliant, but I am pleased it unfolded how it did.  There was a sense of the unknown that enabled me to be totally present to the experience.

## 4.	What is your favourite moment from the first film? 

I love the scene when Hagrid takes Harry to Diagon Alley. We get introduced to the wizarding world through Harry’s eyes. Everything is so magical!

## 5.	What is you earliest memory of being a part of the Wizarding World? 

Being actually 9 and ¾ years old on platform 9 ¾! When you’re that young age is important ha! The best part of the entire series for me was being a member of the Weasley family.

## 6.	What was your reaction when you found out you were going to play Ginny Weasley? 

My brother Lewis and I rolled down the windows of the car and screamed. My family and I were all so excited.

## 7.	What Ginny moment made you feel the most proud of her?

Standing up for Harry being bullied by Draco Malfoy in Flourish and Blotts, it was so cute and endearing. 

## 8.	What do fans tell you they most admire about your character?

How fierce, kind and loving she is. She has this amazing power that she balances with softness so well.

## 9.	If you had the chance to play another character, who would it be? 

I could never do it justice, but I always loved Bellatrix Lestrange. 

## 10.	We know that filming a movie can involve a lot of gaps between takes/scenes. How would you entertain yourself during that time on set?

Well, we were kids, so we loved to be kids and be goofy but at the same time we also had school to stay on top of. So as soon as we weren’t on set, we were in the classroom together.

## 11.	Who was the funniest person on set and how did they make you laugh?

Rupert was always the funniest, I laughed the most during our scenes at The Burrow.

## 12.	When meeting the cast for the first time, was there anyone who made you particularly starstruck? 

Well, I was so young, so I was pretty naive when it came to knowing who was famous. Julie Walters who played my mum became a motherly figure to me on set when I was young, explaining what was happening around me and just making me feel protected. I then watched more of her films and was like wow she is incredible – I am nervous now! 

## 13.	When Harry, Ron and Hermione went through the trapdoor to rescue the Philosopher’s Stone in the first film, they faced many obstacles. There was Fluffy the three-headed dog, the Devil’s Snare, the flying keys, the giant wizard chess board and the Mirror of Erised. Which one would you feel most confident taking on and how would you tackle it? 

Fluffy mainly because I have always loved the idea of playing the harp. I better get practicing!

## 14.	And which two characters would you choose to help you rescue the Philosopher’s Stone and why did you pick them? 

Neville and Luna, because we did so well together at the Ministry of Magic in *Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix*. 

## 15.	If you could have one spell, or one type of magic, that you were able to use in your day-to-day life, what would you pick? 

A Portkey, I would love to be able to travel carbon emission free.

## 16.	What is your favourite Harry Potter book and film? And are they different to each other? 

*Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix* is my favourite book because I love all the characters who are Order members. My favourite film is probably *Deathly Hallows Part 2* just because it was the big finale and strongest still in my memory.

## 17.	We know that Ginny had a pet Pygmy Puff, but what would be your wizarding pet? 

I was always sad that there weren’t more dogs around Hogwarts. So, I would bring my dog, Billy Blue.

## 18.	What form would your Boggart take and what would your Animagus form be?

My Boggart would definitely be a rat. I wish my Animagus could be a dolphin, if I was cool enough to have that power. 

## 19.	Which Wizarding World moment made you the most emotional?

The last scene, being back on platform 9 ¾ and this time as a mother married to Harry. It was so surreal. The actors playing our kids were the same age as we were when we began. It was a true full circle moment full of a lot of emotions. 

## 20.	Why do you think the Harry Potter series is still so loved today?

It explores the most important theme, love. Unconditional and unjudgmental love. Good triumphs over evil because of love. I think fans and myself find a home in Hogwarts. No matter what is happening in our own lives, it is always there to welcome us.

Lucius Malfoy was an odious character. He was slimy, sneaky, vain and cruel – to name a few of his most… charming behaviours. However, one of the most infuriating things about him was how his personality reinforced the idea that Slytherin is an evil house, which isn’t true. For every Lucius, there’s also a Scorpius, Slughorn, Andromeda, Merlin and even Snape. Slytherins might be known for their cunning and their ambition, but those qualities on their own aren’t a bad thing. It is what those witches and wizards choose to do with those attributes that determine whether they end up on a dark path. Lucius Malfoy was certainly someone who chose to go down that route and twisted those attributes into their worst forms.

## His devotion to supporting Voldemort’s cause 
Firstly, we must mention Lucius Malfoy’s pure-blood mania. There are plenty of Slytherins who do not share Voldemort’s worldview, but the most vocal supporters are often from this house. Slytherins have an unfortunate legacy of being anti-Muggle – which stretches right back to Salazar Slytherin and his Chamber of Secrets. It also doesn’t help that Voldemort was one. Lucius Malfoy did nothing to dispel this hateful impression and was a fully signed up supporter of pure-blood supremacy. 

In fact, he was in Lord Voldemort’s closest circle as a Death Eater. He despised Muggles, Muggle-borns, those he saw as blood traitors and tried to instil those values in his family. Those beliefs certainly fed his ego, as he thought himself to be superior to those who did not share his background. There is no doubt that his views were abhorrent, but he went beyond rhetoric and helped Voldemort in his quest to ‘purify’ the wizarding world. He was at Voldemort’s side during both of his attempts to seize power and was instrumental in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries. His nasty attitude exemplified the worst kinds of witches and wizards that are found in Slytherin, and he only helped to tarnish its name.

## He was ambitious in all the wrong ways
One of the most dominant traits in Slytherin house is ambition. While there are many that use that for good – such as Scorpius Malfoy who channelled his into academic pursuits – others like Lucius Malfoy twisted it into something rather unpleasant. Lucius’s aspirations focussed on power, influence and furthering his own position in the wizarding world. He certainly didn’t do anything that didn’t benefit him personally. He snaked his way into Cornelius Fudge’s good graces (no doubt capitalising on how weak Fudge was) to make sure he could influence Ministry decisions. He made sure to get on the board of governors at Hogwarts to try and keep control of the school and get rid of those he did not care for. His ambition certainly fed into his controlling nature, and he didn’t care about who he hurt to get what he wanted.

## He failed to strike a balance between arrogance and confidence 
Like a lot of Slytherins, Lucius was very sure of himself. Nevertheless, unlike many of them, he failed to tread the line between being self-assured and being conceited. While having confidence in your own abilities is a good thing, wanting to make others feel small because of your perceived success is just unpleasant. Lucius loved to do this. He was constantly showing off – and the inherited wealth he had from previous generations of Malfoy’s certainly helped him with that. Old Lucius was very fond of splashing the cash to reinforce his reputation. Who can forget how he bought the entire Slytherin Quidditch team new broomsticks to give them an advantage? Or how he sneered at the Weasleys and their lack of money? Or how he boasted about having such good seats at the Quidditch World Cup Final? He was always looking for an excuse to rub what he saw as his stellar social status in other people’s faces. Not only did this all make him unbearably smug, but it also made him vain.

## He had a rather cowardly knack for self-preservation 
Lucius was an incredibly slippery fellow and had a talent for saving his own skin. He managed to lie his way out of trouble after Voldemort’s first attempt at a coup by saying he had been under the Imperius Curse. He also did it again after Voldemort was defeated for a second time. He turned on the other Death Eaters, provided evidence against them and avoided being sent to prison. Lucius did not have a loyal bone in his body and refused to face up to the consequences of his actions. While his beliefs were foul, his readiness to abandon them whenever he came close to facing the music was just pure cowardice. 

There are plenty of Slytherins who wouldn’t have acted like Lucius. They wouldn’t have thrown others under the bus or behaved selfishly in the name of self-preservation. While Severus Snape was an incredibly complex character, he was willing to risk his life as a spy. Sirius’s brother Regulus managed to steal a Horcrux from Voldemort knowing it would probably cost him his life. Leta Lestrange sacrificed herself to cause a distraction (which helped Newt and Theseus) in *Crimes of Grindelwald*. They were nothing like Lucius.
