## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

## Harry probably felt as though he was living his dream… for the most part
When Harry was younger, the only profession that appealed to him was being an Auror… though you’d think he would have had enough of Dark wizards by the time he left school! Fortunately for him, he made it, and he even became the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. In terms of his career, he seemed to be living his dream. We imagine his younger self would have been rather pleased about that and all the exciting adventures he had. 

However, his job wasn’t the only thing we reckon Harry aspired to. After growing up without a mother and father, we imagine he would have desperately wanted a family of his own. Though the Dursleys were technically related to him, they never gave him the loving home he needed. Luckily, he managed to start creating his own family during his time at Hogwarts and that continued after he left. When we met him in *Cursed Child*, he was happily married to Ginny, and they had three wonderful children. 

However, that is not to say that that everything was perfect. Harry had real difficulty connecting with his son Albus and found he couldn’t truly escape the past. We think his younger self would probably roll their eyes at some of Harry’s bonding attempts and would be frustrated that his fame was one of things that caused friction with his child. Although, these hiccups aside, we are confident that Harry would be amazed at how his life unfolded.

## We’re not surprised that Hermione ended up as Minister for Magic… but she might be
Ok, so the cleverest witch of her age becoming Minister for Magic might seem like a forgone conclusion, but we doubt little Hermione would have been too happy. While Harry and Ron dreamt of becoming Dark wizard catchers, Hermione had other passions – remember S.P.E.W.? As she put it, she wanted ‘to do something worthwhile’ and saw working for the rights of house-elves as just that. Working for the Ministry wasn’t something that really appealed to her. In fact, she really wasn’t a big fan of it. When Minister for Magic Rufus Scrimgeour asked her if she was planning to follow a career in Magical Law, she said ‘No I’m not… I’m hoping to do some good in the world!’ Oh, how things change. 

The Hermione we met in *Cursed Child*, might have held the top job in the institution that her younger self regarded so warily, but we have no doubt that she still managed to meet her childhood ambition of trying to make the wizarding world a better place. Now she was the one with the power, she could work on making the changes she felt it needed. 

We also think she would have been rather happy to hear that she and Ron had finally managed to stop bickering long enough to get married, have kids and share their life together. Though she worked long hours at the Ministry and couldn’t spend quite as much time with her family as she hoped, ultimately, we feel that her younger self would be rather happy with where they ended up. She was definitely someone her kids could be proud of.

## Ron’s aspirations changed in his adult life… but that’s not a bad thing
In their fifth year at Hogwarts, when Harry asked Ron what he wanted to do after he left school, he sheepishly replied that he would like to be an Auror. And he was for a while – but that soon changed. After a stint at the Ministry, Ron left to help his brother George run Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes. We imagine that after years of fighting Voldemort and his followers, Ron was happy to help his brother and bring joy to the wizarding world. 

Now we believe that Ron’s younger self might have initially been a bit annoyed that Harry and Hermione both ended up with powerful jobs and he didn’t follow suit – especially with his insecurities about being overlooked. However, we reckon he would come to appreciate how his aspirations evolved and would realise that he wasn’t in anyone else’s shadow. 

Ron in *Cursed Child* seemed to be pretty content. He had really found his feet as a father, had not lost his sense of humour and enjoyed entertaining the next generation (Lily Potter in particular seemed to really look up to her Uncle Ron). As an excellent dad, he didn’t appear to have many anxieties about his relationship with his kids. He also seemed to be a perfect fit for Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes and enjoyed using the products they sold. His marriage to Hermione was strong and he even seemed to be a bit of a romantic – what with his desire to renew their vows (so he *does* have an emotional range bigger than a teaspoon). Overall, Ron was thriving when we saw him as an adult. We figure that if his younger self saw how happy he was, they would completely understand the path he chose.

But not all who dwell in the Forbidden Forest are always what they seem at first. Read on to find the creature you’d most likely be friends with…

## Are you… always hungry and longing to be part of a gang?

You’d be great friends with Aragog.

When a young Voldemort made Aragog a scapegoat for the Basilisk’s attacks on Hogwarts’ students, Hagrid – a student at the time – helped the overgrown spider to find sanctuary deep within the Forbidden Forest.
Hagrid then introduced Mosag, a female Acromantula – the giant species of spider - to the Forbidden Forest. Soon after, Aragog and Mosag had a brood of hundreds, all with a hunger for meat, and even witches and wizards were on the menu!

OK, so admittedly nobody wants to be pals with a giant spider and his brood of flesh-eating children BUT they are one heck of a tight-knit gang.
Aragog has also shown signs of deep loyalty, although only if your name is Rubeus Hagrid.

When Harry Potter and Ron Weasley encounter Aragog during their second year at Hogwarts, the fearsome beast explains that while he won’t allow his hungry children to attack Hagrid, he refuses to stop them from feasting on the young wizards.

Hmm, maybe not an ideal candidate for friendship then.

## Are you… extremely loyal but very misunderstood?

You’d be great friends with a Thestral.

Only visible to those who have seen death, Thestrals are often undeservedly seen as a bad omen due to their grim appearance.

The black horse-like creatures had a skeletal body with vast, leathery wings reminiscent of giant bats.

But behind the eerie and sinister appearance, Thestrals could be incredibly loyal creatures.

The intelligent animals had a keen sense of direction and their rider need only say where they want to go and the Thestral would oblige. 

Showing their loyalty to the staff and students of Hogwarts, the Thestrals joined forces with Buckbeak the Hippogriff to battle Voldemort’s army during the Battle of Hogwarts.

## Are you… a music lover who is always sleeping?

You’d be great friends with Fluffy.

The three-headed canine was born in Greece but arrived at Hogwarts after gamekeeper Hagrid purchased him at The Leaky Cauldron. While Fluffy may seem fierce and ferocious, there’s one way to his heart and that’s the sweet serenade of music! 

Harry, Ron and Hermione found this extremely useful when Fluffy was blocking their way to the Philosopher’s Stone. By enchanting a nearby harp, they immediately sent Fluffy to sleep, allowing the trio to make their way past all three of his heads...

## Is your philosophy that everything happens for a reason? 

You’d be great friends with Firenze.

The centaur shows all the best characteristics of a true friend, even when it’s cost him the most. His wisdom with Divination also gives Firenze an often calm, if sombre, mood. But Firenze isn’t always just gazing at the stars.

Showing huge amounts of bravery, Firenze saved a young Harry Potter during an encounter with Professor Quirrell and Lord Voldemort, surely knowing he was important.

This, and his later teaching position at Hogwarts following Professor Trelawney’s temporary dismissal, saw Firenze be cast out from the clan of centaurs that reside in the Forbidden Forest as they felt he was becoming a servant to wizards.

But after showing his fierce loyalty and bravery during the Battle of Hogwarts, Firenze was welcomed back into the centaur group as they finally understood his pro-human leanings were admirable and not so shameful after all. If you too like to stick to your guns, we think you’d be a great companion to Firenze.

## Are you… unique but with a fiery temper?

You’d be great friends with a Blast-Ended Skrewt. Yes, really.

The unique creatures were bred by Hagrid while employed as gamekeeper for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

When Harry first encountered the newborn creatures, he described them as smelling strongly of rotten fish. Not a good start.

Not only that – but sparks would often fly out of their rear end, propelling the scorpion-lobster like creatures forward.
When fully grown, they’d use this unique skill to charge at enemies when the males would attack with their stinger - while females opted to use blood suckers to drain their enemy’s life.

Their strong armour defended almost all spells, with their only vulnerability being their unprotected underside – something Harry realized when confronted with a deadly Blast-ended Skrewt during the Triwizard Tournament.

On second thoughts, maybe a friend with a stench of rotting fish and a lethal sting isn’t such a good idea?

*OK, so lesson learned… maybe don’t venture into the Forbidden Forest looking for friendship. There’s nothing there but mystery and danger!*

## If you’re often wishing you were someone else, you’d take some Polyjuice Potion 

Who doesn’t want to be Dumbledore for a day? Or indeed, anyone that perhaps you’d like to live the life of, even if just for a short time. If you’re an aspirational person, always looking to others for inspiration, we can absolutely see you brewing up some Polyjuice Potion. So, it may be a little ‘complex and time consuming’ to make, but it would definitely be worth it to walk in another’s shoes, or in Hermione’s case, walking in someone else’s paws... (a reminder: cat hair in Polyjuice Potion is *not* recommended). 

## If you’re a brilliant bookworm, you’d love some extra time with the Elixir of Life 

There’s just not enough hours in the day, is there? But there is a certain concoction that could help you get a lot more done. Created using the Philosopher’s Stone, Nicholas Flamel lived to be over 600 with the help of the Elixir of Life. Now, people would use this extra time for many reasons – but if you’re a Hermione-esque bookworm wishing you had way more time to read, this would be perfect for you and your quest for self-education. Plenty of time to take extra classes and make a serious dent in the nearest library.  

## If you’re a restless sleeper – try Madam Pomfrey’s Potion for Dreamless Sleep 

If you struggle to switch off at night, or are plagued with the strangest of dreams, there is a handy potion that makes sleeping far more straight-forward. Madam Pomfrey prescribed this potion to Harry after the awful events of the Triwizard Tournament – for Harry was susceptible to many disconcerting nightmares. 

There are other potions used for sleeping – such as the Draught of Living Death, but seeing as nobody has figured out how to wake someone up from it yet, we’d advise staying well clear of this concoction. 

## If you’re the “that’s just my luck” type, you’d drink Felix Felicis. 

Whether you regularly get caught in the rain, lose things, or could just use a lucky break, this liquid gold solution is all you need to put things right. Just a few drops and, like Harry, you’ll find yourself in the right place at the right time – though we hope that doesn’t include Aragog’s funeral. We’re still coming to terms with that one. 

Of course, as Ron discovers, sometimes you don’t even need Felix Felicis to truly feel lucky – sometimes it’s just about tricking yourself into believing you can do it! 

## If you have a tendency to get a bit tongue tied... try a Babbling Beverage 

Are you ever having a chat with someone and find you simply cannot access that perfect witty thing to say? We have all been there. There is a potion that could have you waxing lyrical in no time though – try a furtive swig of a Babbling Beverage next time you find yourself stuck for small-talk at a party. 

## If you’re simply a very anxious person – maybe some Draught of Peace would be nice 

Are you in a perpetual state of unrest? Can’t even settle down to watch some Muggle telly without feeling a niggle at the back of your mind? Do you worry when you don’t have stuff to worry about? You sound like you’d love some Draught of Peace then, which is recommended for those easily agitated. Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? But then again, this is the wizarding world. 


Ever wondered what it would be like to be Dumbledore for a day? Are you a restless sleeper? Constantly anxious? Don’t worry, if you’re a potions connoisseur, there’s usually a brew to help.

## Molly’s magical ability
So, we all know that Mrs Weasley was a total legend – her takedown of Bellatrix in the Battle of Hogwarts was superb. However, outside of that moment, a lot of her other magical abilities were overlooked. Molly was a whizz when it came to household and healing spells, but they weren’t often acknowledged because of their domestic nature. Her most used spells may not have been as flashy as the ones used by other prominent characters, but they were still complex and skilful. Nobody was able to pull off a mouth-watering meal quite like Mrs Weasley and Harry certainly appreciated her efforts. 

>By seven o’clock, the two tables were groaning under dishes and dishes of Mrs Weasley’s excellent cooking, and the nine Weasleys, Harry and Hermione were settling themselves down to eat beneath a clear, deep-blue sky. To somebody who had been living on meals of increasingly stale cake all summer, this was paradise, and at first, Harry listened rather than talked, as he helped himself to chicken-and-ham pie, boiled potatoes and salad.

## She stood up for what was right
Molly wasn’t in the first iteration of the Order of the Phoenix but that doesn’t mean she hadn’t consistently opposed Voldemort. Her resolve never wavered, despite losing her brothers Fabian and Gideon when Voldemort was first in power. She instilled that resolve in her family (though Percy took longer to come around). When Voldemort returned, she joined the Order and stayed at the headquarters in Grimmauld Place – despite knowing the possible risks. Even the death of her son Fred, during the Battle of Hogwarts, was not enough to stop her from fighting to help bring an end to Voldemort’s reign of terror.

## Mrs Weasley loved fiercely
Mrs Weasley had a lot of love to give. Though sometimes she may have seemed to be as ferocious as a Hungarian Horntail, there was no doubt that she was dedicated to her family and loved them with that same ferocity. She was also willing to extend that love to others. After all, she was the consistent mother figure in Harry’s life. From his first year at Hogwarts, she made him feel wanted. She knitted him sweaters, invited him to stay, supported him and loved him like her own. There was one moment in particular that stood out to us. When Cedric was killed in front of Harry, she was the one to bring him the most comfort. Knowing he would have been traumatised, she hugged him like a mother would, which reminded him that he was loved.

## Molly was often (unintentionally) hilarious
When you think of the funniest characters in the Harry Potter books, Mrs Weasley probably doesn’t spring to mind. However, Molly could be funny. It wasn’t always intentional, but the relationship she had with her family (especially Fred and George) often provided relief when the story became intense. For instance, when Ron was very unhappy about the… interesting dress robes she had given him, her response was a classic Molly comeback…

## She learnt from her mistakes
Nobody is perfect and neither was Mrs Weasley. She could sometimes be judgemental and got situations wrong, but she was also willing to being corrected and showed that it’s ok to change your mind. In *Goblet of Fire*, she believed the rubbish that Rita Skeeter was writing about Harry’s love life and turned against Hermione. Yet, as soon as Harry told her the rumours weren’t true, she believed him and changed her opinion.

She also jumped to conclusions about her daughter-in-law Fleur and her relationship with Bill. In *Half-Blood Prince*, when he was attacked by Fenrir Greyback and left scarred, she seemed to assume that Fleur wouldn’t want to be with him anymore. Fleur quickly put a stop to that nonsense and stood up for their relationship. Yet again, Molly was corrected and even offered her the use of Great Auntie Muriel’s tiara for their wedding as an olive branch. Yes, Mrs Weasley was wrong in both scenarios, but ultimately she didn’t allow her stubbornness to get the better of her.

What if Quirrell had never let a troll loose in the dungeon?

First, let’s have a look at why this decision was important in the first place…

Quirinus Quirrell was a timid and nervous person, but he was also highly intelligent and gifted. At school he was most likely teased because of his shy nature and made to feel inadequate by others. To try and prove that he wasn’t a nobody, he developed an interest (theoretical at first) in the Dark Arts. That, coupled with his desire to make people take notice of him was what led him to seek out Voldemort. 

However, Quirrell was immature, arrogant and underestimated Voldemort. He was no match for what remained of the Dark Lord and was possessed by him. While Quirrell still had his soul, he was weakened by having to share his body with an evil, more powerful one. 

When Harry started his first term at Hogwarts, Quirrell was under this control. The famous turban he wore was to hide the monster that lurked underneath. Voldemort was looking for a way to return to power and had his sights set on the Philosopher’s Stone – which produced the Elixir of Life. If Voldemort had the Stone, he would be strong enough to create a body of his own and he would be immortal. Quirrell had already tried and failed to take it from Gringotts for him before term began. This attempt was noticed, and the Philosopher’s Stone was transported to Hogwarts for safekeeping. 

This is where the troll came into play. Voldemort still wanted Quirrell to steal the Stone. To do that, Quirrell needed to have a proper look at what was guarding it on the third floor corridor. By letting the troll into the school, he caused a distraction and knew he would have time to investigate… he just didn’t foresee quite how pivotal that choice would be.

The troll in the dungeon set off a whole chain of events that were crucial to the first story. It added to Snape’s suspicions about Quirrell. It was what made Harry and Ron suspect Snape. It also led to the formation of the golden trio. 

Without it, just how different would things have been? Would Hermione have ever become their friend? Would Voldemort have been able to achieve immortality? Most importantly, would Ron have ever been able to master Wingardium Leviosa?

## Would Harry, Ron and Hermione have become friends? 
The struggle between Harry, Ron, Hermione and the troll in the girls’ bathroom was a defining moment in *Philosopher’s Stone*. While Harry and Ron were already good friends, Hermione was not somebody they hung out with. Before this, they didn’t like her (Ron especially). They found her confidence and know-it-all tendencies to be rather jarring and it was Ron’s mean jibes that put her in the path of the troll in the first place. 

After a Charms lesson, in which Hermione had thoroughly shown Ron up when it came to levitation, Ron vented his frustration by making nasty comments about her to Harry. Not only did he say she was a ‘nightmare’ but also said she had no friends. Hermione overheard them and ran to the girls’ bathroom crying – where she stayed all day. Now this day happened to be on Hallowe’en, the very same Hallowe’en that the troll entered the castle. In all the chaos, Harry realised Hermione would have had no idea about the danger she was in. They went to rescue her. Ron managed to pronounce Leviosa correctly. The troll was knocked out. Hermione covered for them. A bond was formed… and the rest was history. 

If it wasn’t for the troll, there is the possibility that they wouldn’t have become friends. Without it, all that would have happened was Ron’s horrible comments and Hermione being very upset. It would be completely understandable that she would want nothing to do with the people who spoke about her behind her back. Rather than growing closer, this would have only pushed them further away from one another. While we reckon Harry and Ron would have felt some guilt about upsetting their classmate, we don’t think they would have been too fussed about not being her friend. 

Although, that is not to say that they wouldn’t have become friends later. After all, they were always in close proximity to one another – being in the same year and house. While the troll acted as the catalyst to push them together, we can imagine them building a tentative bond more slowly over the course of their first year. Whether it was Harry or Ron sticking up for Hermione, or Hermione offering to help them with some tricky wand work in class, we think they would have got there eventually. They had more in common with each other than just defeating a troll… it feels wrong to reduce their entire friendship to just one moment.

## Would Snape have realised what Quirrell was up to? 
We think that Snape would have still figured out what Quirrell was up to without this incident. In fact, Quirrell told Harry that Snape had already begun to suspect him before Hallowe’en. So, when the troll was let into the dungeon, Snape already knew to head to the third floor to try and stop the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. However, at that point he had no solid evidence of what Quirrell was doing and was relying on his gut instinct (and a vague hint from Dumbledore) that he was doing something he shouldn’t.

Therefore, we think that the troll in the dungeon probably did more to push Snape towards confirming his theory rather than alerting him to Quirrell’s misdeeds in the first place. After that incident he was firmly on his radar. He even confronted Quirrell in the Forbidden Forest to try and discover just how close he was to stealing the Philosopher’s Stone. 

Ultimately, if the troll hadn’t been let loose in Hogwarts, we think Snape may not have confirmed his suspicions about Quirrell so quickly. But we think he would have figured it out eventually – especially after the attempt on Harry’s life at the Quidditch match. Snape was intelligent and more than capable of piecing the puzzle together. As we learnt in *Deathly Hallows*, Dumbledore had asked him to ‘keep an eye on Quirrell’. With that request and the strange incidents that kept happening that year, it was only a matter of when Snape realised Quirrell’s true intentions and not if.

## Would the golden trio still have suspected Snape?
This is a little trickier. On Hallowe’en, when Ron and Harry went to rescue Hermione, they saw Snape heading towards the third floor. At the moment, they were rather distracted with the dangerous business of a troll roaming the halls to pay too much attention, but they did spot him. They already knew that the third floor was out of bounds, and they knew that Fluffy (Hagrid’s three-headed dog) was guarding something there. For Snape to be sneaking around when all the other teachers were heading in a different direction was suspicious to say the least.

Their misgivings were reinforced when Harry went to get his confiscated book back from Snape and saw his nasty bite from Fluffy. That combination of factors, plus their intense dislike of their Potions teacher, made them believe he was up to no good. As a result, you could argue that without the troll they might not have started to suspect Snape. However, we don’t think that this would have been the case. We believe that they would have questioned his intentions anyway. 

If Harry had still seen Snape’s injured leg, we think he still would have come to the same conclusion. If he hadn’t seen it, then we think they would have doubted him after the Quidditch match in which Harry’s broomstick seemed to have a life of its own – especially after they spotted Snape mouthing what we now know was a counter-curse but looked like an attempt on Harry’s life. After that, they misinterpreted the conversation between Quirrell and Snape in the Forbidden Forest as further evidence of Snape’s guilt. Even though they had the wrong end of the stick, there was more than one event that led them to doubt him. Overall, we believe their hatred for him, and his shifty behaviour, was enough to make them not trust Snape – with or without the troll in the dungeon.

## Would Voldemort have got the Philosopher’s Stone?
If the troll had never been in Hogwarts, we think that Voldemort might have been able to come into possession of the Philosopher’s Stone – especially if the Harry, Ron and Hermione hadn’t become friends as a result of that night. 

Once they went through the trapdoor, each of the trio had a significant role to play in rescuing the Stone. If it wasn’t for Harry’s flying skills, they might not have got past the keys. If Ron hadn’t been so great at wizard chess, they might have been stuck there. Finally, if Hermione hadn’t figured out the potions puzzle, and they had taken a drink from the incorrect bottle, they could have died. We highly doubt they would have undertaken such a dangerous adventure together if they weren’t firm friends. 

Besides, they probably wouldn’t have got to that stage without Hermione as part of the team. While they all played a part in retrieving the Stone, it was Hermione who figured out the identity of Nicolas Flamel, and what was being hidden at Hogwarts in the first place. Without her brain, Ron and Harry would probably have been stuck. 

If they were friends, without this specific incident, there is the slim possibility that they might not have realised that whatever Fluffy was guarding was under threat until it was too late. It wasn’t until they began to suspect Snape that they really started to put this together. Having said that, we are confident that Harry, Ron and Hermione would have managed to stop Quirrell and Voldemort in time – even if figuring out the initial mystery of what was being kept at Hogwarts took them a few extra weeks.

## Most importantly… would Ron have ever mastered Wingardium Leviosa?
The Levitation Charm didn’t seem to come all that easily to Ron – he just couldn’t get the hang of Levi-*o*-sa vs Levi-o-SA. By the end of Flitwick’s lesson, all he had managed to do was get very cross at Hermione and be mean. Yet, when confronted by the troll later that day, he managed to use that spell to knock it unconscious with its own club.

Although, without finding himself in an extremely stressful situation, which required him to act on the spot, it could be argued that Ron would not have mastered Wingardium Leviosa. After his very frustrating lesson, he could have just tried to put it from his mind. His fury at Hermione might have made him too stubborn to correct his mistakes. Nevertheless, we think that he would have learnt it eventually. 

Not only was it likely to come up again in some exam or class, but as a handy and basic spell Ron would definitely have had the capability to get to grips with it in the future. If he didn’t manage it on that Hallowe’en, with a bit of practice (and a change of pronunciation) he would have got there eventually.
