## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

## The Sorting Hat
At first glance, this scruffy hat might not seem like much but don’t be fooled by appearance alone. This is a very important – not to mention personable – object. Every single student to pass through Hogwarts has placed this hat on their head. Full of wit and wisdom, it contains the intelligence of the four Hogwarts founders, is great at conversation and can also see what is inside your head. Its primary purpose might be to tell you which house you belong to, but it also has a rather impressive talent for song writing too.

## The Quill of Acceptance and the Book of Admittance
You might have wondered how students are picked for Hogwarts, and you might be surprised to hear that no human involvement in the process… at all. Up in a locked tower, that no student visits, sits the Quill of Acceptance and the Book of Admittance. Placed there by the four founders, these objects decide who attends this famous school. The moment a child exhibits any sign of magic, the Quill will float up out its inkpot and try to record their name in the Book. Once it is written, that child’s place at Hogwarts is secure. However, the Book is nowhere near as lenient as the Quill – it demands to see more than a hint of magic before it will allow a name to be written down. It has been known to snap shut if it feels there isn’t enough evidence of magical ability and will keep doing so until it is satisfied that there is. So, unless your name is in the Book, you’re not going to Hogwarts.

## The Marauder's Map
This map is bursting with personality. It was created by the four Marauders – James Potter, Remus Lupin, Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew (otherwise known as Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs). At first it appears to be a blank bit of parchment, but once you say ‘I solemnly swear that I am up to no good’ it reveals its secrets. This intricate map shows you every detail of Hogwarts and its grounds, including exactly where everyone is within the castle. It would have taken a great deal of skill and a lot of complex magic to create this object. It’s also rather cheeky too. Who can forget when Professor Snape tried to force it to reveal itself? Not only did it not show its true contents, but it insulted the surly Potions master… object or not, we think it’s a very bold move to call Snape an idiot.

## Model dragons
Dragons are incredible, majestic creatures. Though as we learnt with Norbert, they don’t make good pets – and that’s an understatement. Having said that, we wouldn’t say no to a teeny tiny model version instead. In *Goblet of Fire*, the Triwizard Champions all have to pick a mini dragon out of a bag and then face the full-size version. They’re surprisingly lifelike and we can’t help but be charmed by them. It seems Harry was too…

Before he pulled the curtains of his four-poster shut, Harry set his tiny model of the Hungarian Horntail on the table next to his bed, where it yawned, curled up and closed its eyes. Really, Harry thought, as he pulled the hangings on his four-poster closed, Hagrid had a point ... they were all right, really, dragons ...

## The Hogwarts Portraits
Out of all the objects in the wizarding world, portraits are arguably the ones with the most personality. Unlike Muggle paintings, wizarding portraits can talk, move and even visit other pictures – and the ones we encounter at Hogwarts are no exception. There’s Sir Cadogan and his trusty pony – a knight who is more than happy to challenge you to a fight. There’s also the Fat Lady, who loves nothing more than hanging out with Violet, her friend from another painting. Not to mention all the previous Headteachers of Hogwarts who reside in the Headteacher’s office. Nevertheless, while these portraits can do an excellent impression of their subjects, by mimicking their favourite phrases and general demeanour, their ability to interact with people only goes so far. Ultimately, they are just representations of the living subjects captured by an artist.

## The Weasley’s talking mirror
When you’re stood admiring yourself in the mirror, the last thing you’d expect is it to critique you. Yet, the mirror at the Weasley house certainly did that… and with a lot of sass. Harry undoubtedly had a shock when he glanced at himself in this opinionated mirror and it yelled ‘Tuck your shirt in, scruffy!’. This is one magical object that has a lot to say for itself.

## Wizard chess pieces
Wizard chess seems much more exciting than its Muggle counterpart. The pieces appear to be alive, so it is almost like directing troops in a miniature battle. It can also be brutal. The chessmen are not afraid to use force to take down their opponents. They’re also unafraid to speak their mind and are more than happy to let you know when you’re making a mistake…

However, old chessmen weren’t a drawback at all. Ron knew them so well he never had trouble getting them to do what he wanted. Harry played with chessmen Seamus Finnigan had lent him and they didn’t trust him at all. He wasn’t a very good player yet and they kept shouting different bits of advice at him, which was confusing: ‘Don’t send me there, can’t you see his knight? Send him, we can afford to lose him.’

## If you’re a night owl… you’d roam the corridors after hours
Do you often find yourself wide awake in the middle of the night? Do you just not do mornings? Would you hate the idea of having a set bedtime? Then we reckon you’d break the rules by wandering around the castle when you should be tucked up in your four-poster bed. Hogwarts is crammed full of secret passageways, curious objects and intriguing secrets… it would feel almost impossible to stay put when you’re wide awake – especially when there is so much exploring to be done. We could totally see you sneaking around after dark, finding all the hiding places to avoid being spotted by Filch and Mrs Norris, and ending up with a knowledge of the castle that rivals the Marauders and the Weasley twins.

## If you have an endless thirst for knowledge… you’d sneak into the Restricted Section
If you enjoy getting stuck into a good book, have a wide range of interests and always want to learn something new, then you’d sneak into the Restricted Section. Like Hermione Granger, the library would be your favourite stomping ground, where we imagine you’d spend the majority of your free time. However, there are only so many books in the main section of the Hogwarts library. Once you had made your way through those, you’d want to get your hands on something new – especially if it was something challenging and exciting… which is exactly the type of thing you would find in the Restricted Section.

## If you enjoy hanging out in nature… you’d visit the Forbidden Forest 
The hustle and bustle of everyday life and being surrounded by people can often feel like too much. So, if you love nothing more than a good hike and are quite solitary by nature, we think you’d be drawn to the Forbidden Forest. It wouldn’t matter to you that it is out of bounds, you’d sneak in there at every chance you’d get. While you’d have to be on guard for creatures that aren’t very friendly – it would be awful to run into an Acromantula – we can also see it soon becoming your happy place, where there is plenty to explore and where you can switch off from the rest of the outside world.

## If you’re known for being a hothead… you’d duel in the castle corridors 
Are you the type of person who isn’t always very patient? Do you tend to act first and think later? Then we reckon you’d be duelling in the castle corridors. If someone insulted you, you’d forget all about the fact that magic was banned in the hallways. Instead, with a wand in your hand, you’d find it all too tempting to respond to with a quick hex or jinx. And like the bold Ginny Weasley with her infamous Bat-Bogey Hex, we can imagine you having a signature spell that would cement your fierce reputation and would become legendary throughout the school.

## If you’re an animal lover… you’d bring a fantastic beast inside the castle
If animals are your most favourite thing in the world, then you’d definitely break the rules by trying to smuggle a magical creature – not on the approved pet list – into Hogwarts. Like Newt Scamander and Rubeus Hagrid, you believe that all creatures deserve to be loved and would not be able to say no to taking care of any animal who needed it. You’re probably the type of person who would arrive home from school with an injured bird or squirrel or mouse in your pocket, which you would nurse back to health (even if your parents weren’t keen on the idea). So, whether it was a baby unicorn that had wandered from its herd, a Mooncalf that had damaged one if its spindly legs or a Niffler that you’d taken a shine to, you’d sneak all manner of fantastic beasts into Hogwarts.

This beautiful emulation of Hogwarts castle comes courtesy of Sam Pierpoint and her collaborators - which she has built in keeping with the 20th anniversary celebrations of *Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.*

Sam is a Bristol-based image maker and art director, specialising in handcrafted sculptures. 

"Creating the sculpture took me back to the first time I saw *Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone*, I was in awe of the scale and detail of Hogwarts," she said. "The scene in the film really captured my creative imagination and I was instantly transported into the magical world of the Harry Potter stories!"

As you can see from her work above, Sam has truly captured the grandeur of the castle.

Deconstructing... the moment Harry first sees Hogwarts

## The darkness 

By the time the Hogwarts Express reaches the school, it is pitch black – and the students must cross the lake by boats to reach the castle. Lit up by only lanterns guiding the way, Hogwarts suddenly looms into shot, providing its own light beaming through the castle windows. Dumbledore once famously spoke of “finding light in the darkness” – and this truly was the moment where Harry was taken away from the darkness of the Dursleys and found light with his new friends in the wizarding world. 

## The music 

John Williams’s unforgettable score for the Harry Potter films rests in the memories of so many Wizarding World fans of different generations, and it is never played to such perfection as it is here. It could only be the soaring strings of Hedwig’s Theme that would befit introducing us to the grandeur of the castle. Hedwig’s Theme would go on to become the leitmotif that is heard across all eight Harry Potter films, always waiting in the wings to truly bring the wizarding world to life. Producer David Heyman has described the score as “majestic” and says he remembered thinking, “this is it”.  It really was! 

## The castle  

Then there’s Hogwarts itself. Towering above the lake against the backdrop of a mystical moonlit sky, our first introduction to Harry’s new home is unforgettable. There is something quite overwhelming and gothic about this building’s silhouette, bursting with turrets, towers and grand, fortified walls, which makes the nervous first years look even tinier looking up at it. The lights pouring through the windows create a sense of mystique immediately, leading us viewers to wonder exactly what is going on in there. 

The spectacle of Hogwarts was created via various techniques by the filmmakers, usually involving models. According to Harry Potter: Page to Screen, production designer Stuart Craig’s designs for Hogwarts were designed as “a huge physical miniature, which was designed for filming on, and which occupied one of the big soundstages at Shepperton.”...

“The model was approximately eighty feet in diameter and used for many of the shots of Hogwarts seen in the original film”, the book adds.

## The reaction 

As Ron Weasley says, “wicked”. Because what else is there to say? The looks on the faces of the Hogwarts students truly says it all – with the likes of Hermione, Seamus, Dean, Harry and Ron all gazing up at their new home in awe. 

There is even a low angle shot of the castle as the students draw closer, making Hogwarts seem even more grand, even a little scary! In fact, there are quite a number of low angle shots used as the students enter Hogwarts, and a humble Neville looks up at Professor McGonagall slightly embarrassed after collecting his unruly toad, Trevor. After all, it’s a very overwhelming thing – going to Hogwarts!

## His views of Voldemort were quite different…
When Draco Malfoy was at school, he believed the abhorrent views of his family. They were all big supporters of Voldemort, who thought that they were superior just because they happened to be pure-blood witches and wizards. They were so invested in this ideology, that Draco and his father were both in Voldemort’s inner circle as Death Eaters. Draco wouldn’t flinch at calling Muggle-borns the derogatory term ‘Mudblood’ and did call Hermione that several times at school. 

However, the older Draco had moved away from that way of thinking. He still had a snobby attitude and some of his old prejudices lingered. Yet, with the help of his wife, Astoria, he had managed to not raise his son with those same bigoted views. While this didn’t excuse Draco’s past behaviour, it did show that he had grown and matured as a person. ## His relationship with Harry, Ron and Hermione had changed… 
Harry, Ron, Hermione and Draco were never going to be best friends – they would probably never even like each other. However, the animosity between them had definitely subsided since their schooldays. In *Cursed Child*, they were no longer on separate sides and had managed to form an uneasy truce. However, that didn’t mean the past had been forgotten. Ron especially remembered the way that Draco was particularly horrible to Hermione. Yet, things clearly had changed, as we don’t think Hermione would have ever spoken about hugging Malfoy as a teenager…

## He was less reluctant to reach out for help…
When Draco was tasked with the murder of Dumbledore at age sixteen, he didn’t ask for any help. He struggled alone under the enormous weight of such an evil task. Even though Snape pleaded with him to allow him to help, Draco refused his offer. In fact, Draco managed to master the tricky art of Occlumency to keep everyone out and ensure that Snape could not assist him with his mission. 

As an adult, Draco had managed to learn that sometimes you need to reach out to others – especially when your child is involved. With the story that Scorpius was the son of Voldemort running rampant, Malfoy had no choice but to ask his former enemy, Harry Potter, to assist him in dispelling those rumours. The amount of pride that Draco would have swallowed to do that shouldn’t be underestimated. There is no way that the young Draco would have done something for anyone else – let alone something so humiliating.

## His had new hair…
Draco Malfoy was always famous for his sleek, blond hair. While he was at school, he kept it rather short. However, as an adult, Draco seemed to have had quite the makeover and sported a long, luxurious and swishy ponytail. It’s always good to shake up your look and keep things fresh. But don’t be fooled in thinking this new ponytail meant a more relaxed, hippy version of Draco. He still enjoyed the finer things in life and still liked to look his very best – with no hair out of place.

## And a new love of farmers’ markets…
Ok, so we don’t know what Draco’s previously feeling were on farmers’ markets, but we would hazard a guess that they probably wouldn’t have been on his radar. We thought it was very cute that adult Draco had an appreciation for thatched roof cottages and local produce – it made him seem like a proper grownup.

## Lavender Brown and Parvati Patil 
One of the most enduring, if unnoticed, female friendships in the entire series had to be that of Lavender and Parvati. While the nature of the story meant we didn’t spend much time with them, the little we saw of their relationship only reinforced the idea that they did everything together. Whether they were racing their pencil cases while practicing Locomotion Charms, or hanging out with their favourite teacher Professor Trelawney, or simply having a giggle together, these two always seemed to be happiest when in each other’s presence. Though when Lavender started dating a certain Weasley, Parvati was a little embarrassed by her friend’s mushy behaviour. But once that was over, we think they would have gone right back to normal.

## Seamus Finnigan and Dean Thomas
Dean and Seamus were another pair where one rarely seemed to be without the other. Their friendship was solid from the moment that they met. Even though they didn’t necessarily agree on everything – like the return of Voldemort – they didn’t allow it to come between them. We imagine it would have been horrible for them to have been separated during *The Deathly Hallows*, when Dean had to go on the run because of his unknown blood status. But the joy that they displayed when reunited before the Battle of Hogwarts was a testament to just how close they were.
