## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

Now that you've finished listening to this extract, what did you make of it? Here's a few thoughts from us. 

## "I'm going to be a knight"

While getting to know Ron during the first book, it's obvious how much Ron feels overshadowed by his big family. Remember - when he looked in The Mirror of Erised, he saw himself standing out from them, the centre of attention. It is in this moment, right at the end of Harry's first Hogwarts adventure, that Ron really comes into his own - due to his excellent chess skills. We'd seen Ron introducing Harry to wizard's chess earlier on in the book, and now, he faced the ultimate challenge - a huge version of it, with living pieces - one of the many obstacles protecting the Philosopher's Stone. 

Ron picks the knight, which is one of the more heroic symbols of the chess game. Just by picking that piece, it is obvious that Ron's Gryffindor-esque bravery really sparkles when he is confident in his own abilities.

## Overcoming obstacles 

It is interesting that there is an individual obstacle protecting the Philosopher's Stone that Harry, Ron and Hermione each find themselves good at. For Harry, it is the flying keys, which he is able to catch thanks to his Quidditch skills. For Ron, it's a giant, enchanted chess set. For Hermione, it's a potions-themed logic puzzle, putting her excellent mind to the ultimate test with a riddle. 

Just seeing how the three friends put their best abilities together shows what a perfect trio they really are.

## Harry’s eye-colour is different to the books
One of Harry’s most distinguishing features are the green eyes he inherited from his mother Lily. However, Daniel Radcliffe’s eyes are bright blue. Easily fixed with a pair of green colour contact lenses, right? Unfortunately not. On the very first day of filming, when they were shooting Harry leaving Hogwarts and saying goodbye to Hagrid, Daniel wore the contact lenses and ended up with streaming bloodshot eyes. While Harry having watery eyes was great for this moving moment, it wasn’t so brilliant for Daniel. It turns out he was having a severe reaction to the lenses and so was unable to wear them. Instead, the team tried to digitally alter his eye-colour – but it just looked fake. So, from that moment on, the film version of Harry had blue eyes.

## Harry’s glasses and the mysterious spots
The green contact lenses weren’t the only eyewear that caused Daniel Radcliffe problems on set. According to Daniel, during the first couple of weeks of filming he started getting ‘terrible spots’. It was his Dad, Alan Radcliffe, who noticed what might be causing them when he saw that they seemed to follow a particular pattern. The spots had formed neat circles around Daniel’s eyes – exactly where his glasses would be. It transpired that Daniel had a nickel allergy, and it was Harry’s iconic glasses that were causing this particular skin issue.

## There were some unfortunate practical effects for Fluffy
You’d be forgiven for thinking that Fluffy the three-headed dog was completely a CG animation. And while they were for the most part, there were also some fun practical effects that went into Fluffy’s creation. One of these practical features were the giant paws that were built for the actors to use in close-up shots. However, not all the practical effects were so pleasant. Fluffy’s drool was not CGI. It was very real and very gross – and we’d have the same reaction as Ron if we ended up with it dribbling down our shoulder.

## Warwick Davis played multiple characters
Warwick Davis did not just play the role of Professor Flitwick in *Philosopher’s Stone*. In fact, he played multiple characters found in the wizarding world. If you’re eagle-eyed and sharp-eared you can see him pop up in multiple places. In the first film he was the bank teller at Gringotts bank who asked Harry and Hagrid for the key to the Potter’s vault. He was also the voice (but not body) of the goblin Griphook. However, as a lot of you have probably spotted, he did go on to embody the whole role of Griphook in the final two films.

## Did you spot Hermione’s dentures?
One memorable character trait of Hermione Granger (along with her bushy hair) was her buck teeth. As the production team on the first movie were trying to stick as closely as they could to the books – this included Hermione’s teeth. So, to emulate this a pair of prosthetic teeth were made for Emma Watson. But according to the film’s director Chris Columbus ‘They looked a little silly and they affected her speech’. That didn’t stop them the team from giving them a whirl on the first day of shooting. If you look closely at the final scene of *Philosopher’s Stone*, you will see Emma Watson in a pair of oversized dentures. It’s safe to say they weren’t particularly successful and were quickly abandoned!

## Harry’s first Weasley jumper looked a little different
When Harry wakes up on his first Christmas morning at Hogwarts, he isn’t really expecting to get any presents at all. Luckily, he does, and it turns out he’s even been given a famous Weasley jumper. However, did you notice that the film version was different to the book version? In the book, his glorious knitwear is described as emerald green and has no letter on the front. But in movie, his first Weasley jumper is blue with a large letter ‘H’. Either way, both are brilliant – we certainly wish we had our very own woollen Mrs Weasley creation.

## James and Oliver Phelps aren’t natural redheads
If you think of the Weasleys, we reckon their flaming red hair is one of the first things to spring to mind. But did you know that not all the actors who played the members of this magical family were natural redheads? This was the case for James and Oliver Phelps, who had to dye their brown hair ginger to become Fred and George. Though their newly dyed hair did help them to convince their mates that they had been cast as the popular Weasley twins. Oliver has even said that nobody at their school believed them when they initially revealed they were going to appear in *Philosopher’s Stone*. It was only after they turned up one day with bright red locks that their peers started to think they were being serious.

## Emma Watson didn’t just learn Hermione’s lines
It turns out that Emma Watson shared quite a few similarities with her character Hermione Granger – including going above and beyond when it came to doing her homework. During the filming of the first movie, not only did she learn her lines, but she also learnt those of the other cast members. When they were filming, Chris Columbus would often have to call cut because Emma would be mouthing the lines of Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint without realising what she was doing.

## Devil’s Snare and the puppeteers
When the filmmakers were discussing how to bring the deadly Devil’s Snare to life, they soon realised that creating it using CGI would be too expensive. Instead, they had to think of a practical way for it to ensnare Harry, Ron and Hermione. In the end, they decided to use puppeteers and camera trickery to bring it to life. Giant tentacles were wrapped around the actors and the hidden puppeteers would make them move and slither off the trio. Then, to make the tentacles appear as though they were enveloping rather than releasing the characters, the film was played backwards.

## Richard Harris’s granddaughter convinced him to be Albus Dumbledore
Richard Harris was an excellent choice for the iconic role of Albus Dumbledore. He brought the character to life and made the part his own. However, did you know that he almost said no to being Dumbledore? According to Richard, he was about to turn the role down for various reasons when his granddaughter Ellie stopped him. In an interview he gave about his experience, he said that Ellie had called him and said ‘Papa, if you don’t play Dumbledore, I will never speak to you again!’. With such strong views he felt he had no choice and came on board. We know we’re very grateful that she gave him the push he needed!

## Harry’s family 

This scene is perhaps one of the most emotional moments of the books – Harry finally coming face to face with the family he never knew, thanks to an enchanted looking glass he discovers in Hogwarts. Not only does he see his late parents, Lily and James, in the mirror, but other descendants who share similarities with him. Harry is described as feeling “half joy, half terrible sadness” as he sees what his life could’ve been if Lord Voldemort hadn’t killed his parents. How did this scene make you feel? 

## The mysteries of the mirror 

Then there’s the Mirror of Erised itself – a strange object that Harry happened upon while roaming Hogwarts at night. The name “Erised” is “desire” reversed and does indeed seem to show the subject the thing they desire the most. For Ron, he saw himself achieving glory, finally standing out from his brothers and sister. For Harry, it was quite the reverse – wanting to be with the family he never had.

What if Snape had never been in love with Lily Potter?

Before we dive into what could have happened, let’s take a look at why Snape’s infatuation with Lily was so important to the story…

Severus Snape spent the majority of his life in love with Lily Potter. It is easy to understand why Snape, who had an unhappy homelife as a child, fell hard for the first person to show him love and kindness. His feelings for Lily seemed to be the motivation behind many of his decisions and it often seemed as though their friendship was the thing that he held most dear.

If it wasn’t for Snape’s love for Lily, it could be suggested that the story of Harry Potter would have looked completely different. Snape’s actions helped Harry to overthrow Voldemort. It was Snape that persuaded Voldemort to give Lily a chance to save herself. He also protected Harry during his time at school (however reluctantly). He risked his life constantly as a double agent. He was the one who was in on Dumbledore’s plan for Harry. He was the one to ensure Harry had the sword of Gryffindor when he needed it. Finally, Snape gave Harry his memories, so that he knew exactly what to do to end Voldemort’s reign of terror. 

If Snape hadn’t loved Lily, then it is hard to see where his motivation to do good would have come from. Even though it must have been incredibly painful for him to love someone who didn’t love him back, that relationship was critical. Without it we wonder how things might have changed. Would Snape and Lily still have been friends? Would he have been a Death Eater? Would Voldemort’s Horcruxes have been destroyed? And possibly the most important question, would Harry have survived as an infant and would there ever have been The Boy Who Lived?

## Would Snape and Lily still have been friends?
We think that Snape and Lily may have still been friends in the beginning – even if Snape had not fallen in love with her. Lily brought light and warmth into Snape’s life from the moment they met. He was an isolated, lonely child whose magic would have only made him more of an outsider in his hometown of Cokeworth. The happiness that he must have felt upon discovering that there was another kid that lived close by who was just like him, can’t be underestimated. We can imagine that Snape would still have been drawn to Lily in the beginning – even platonically. 

Likewise, as Lily was such a warm and empathetic person, she would probably have recognised that Snape didn’t have much exposure to kindness and would have tried to be his friend before they headed to Hogwarts anyway. Also, as a Muggle-born, Lily probably felt different to the rest of her family, and Snape would still have been Lily’s first exposure to the magical world. You could say that he was the person who introduced her to who she really was. So, we are pretty confident that they would still have been friends initially.

However, without Snape falling for Lily, we doubt their friendship would have survived for as long as it did. Snape had been obsessed with the Dark Arts from a young age and the friends he made in Slytherin (such as Avery and Mulciber) were partial to them too. In fact, the majority (if not all) went on to become Death Eaters. We can believe that if Snape hadn’t developed any romantic feelings for Lily, a wedge would have been driven between them once they were sorted into their respective houses. Snape would have finally been around people that were more like him, and we think that he would have allowed himself to fall in with the wrong crowd more quickly. Keeping Lily on side wouldn’t have mattered as much to him – and she wouldn’t have been there as the conscience to keep him on track.

## Would Snape have supported Voldemort? 
As we mentioned before, Snape kept some decidedly dodgy company at school and ended up part of Voldemort’s inner circle. That all happened even though he loved Lily who detested Dark magic and those who practiced it. If Snape’s desire for Lily hadn’t existed, there would have been even less reason for him to not support Voldemort – and we can actually imagine him being an even more fanatical and devoted follower.

We also think Snape’s fascination with the Dark Arts would have made Voldemort irresistible. By supporting Voldemort, he could fully immerse himself in that world. He was also not above the arrogance that afflicted many witches and wizards, despite being a half-blood rather than a pure-blood. He sneered at Petunia for being a Muggle, hesitated when Lily asked if it mattered that she was a Muggle-born and even called her a Mudblood. Snape was clearly sympathetic to Voldemort’s abhorrent ideology and enjoyed feeling superior. We reckon that without his feelings for Lily, Snape would not have been tempted to come into the light and probably would have gone down an even darker and more twisted road.

## Would he have ever worked for Dumbledore? 
Snape did eventually turn away from Voldemort – but it wasn’t for any noble reason. As soon as he found out that Voldemort was planning to kill Harry and his parents, he met with Dumbledore and begged him to save Lily. He couldn’t have cared less if James and Harry had ended up dead but couldn’t stand the thought of Lily dying. While Dumbledore said he would protect the Potters, it was on the condition that Snape now worked for him as a double agent. Snape’s love for Lily ran so deep that he agreed. When she was still murdered, he reluctantly decided that her death would not be in vain, and that he would protect her son. 

If Snape had regarded Lily as merely a friend, acquaintance, or just someone he had once known, we don’t think he would have accepted Dumbledore’s conditions or worked as a spy. Snape was put in an incredibly dangerous position the moment he turned away from Voldemort. We can’t believe that he would have been willing to do that for just anyone and we highly doubt he would have done it to do the right thing. After all, when he found out that Harry needed to die at the hand of Voldemort, he was furious – but not because he had grown to care for Harry or even the cause. Snape had worked tirelessly to protect Lily’s son for her and felt it had all been in vain. His love for Lily trumped everything – after all those years and always. 

However, that is not to say that Dumbledore wouldn’t have found another way to recruit Snape – he could be very persuasive. Once Snape was working for Dumbledore, you could see that he did have some influence on him. When Dumbledore was injured by Marvolo Gaunt’s ring, Snape’s anger at him seemed to come from a place of concern and care. He also seemed to respect Dumbledore – even if he didn’t always see eye to eye with him. We also found out that as an adult he didn’t tolerate the use of the word Mudblood, though that was probably more to do with the painful memory of calling Lily one. 

Either way, Snape did demonstrate growth, which suggests that while Voldemort’s philosophy was incredibly enticing, there was something in Snape that was good. And an incredible and intelligent wizard like Dumbledore may have been able to use that small sliver of light and turn him. Though we don’t doubt it would have been an almost impossible task.

## Would he have been a Professor at Hogwarts?
Snape wasn’t a natural teacher. He despised so many of his students and seemed to take great pleasure in torturing them (unless they were Slytherins). If he hadn’t ended up being Dumbledore’s spy, we reckon there is a good chance that this surly Potions Master would never have lurked in the Hogwarts dungeons as a teacher. 

Instead, we can imagine Snape would have lost himself in studying and practicing Dark magic. He could have spent all his time working for Voldemort as a Death Eater and it is possible that he would never have considered returning to the school where he was bullied.

However, if we consider the idea that Harry never had survived as an infant, and Voldemort had been able to rise to power, he might have found his way back to Hogwarts. Voldemort had always seen Hogwarts as valuable. For example, in *Cursed Child*, in an alternate reality where Voldemort succeeded, Hogwarts was one place that he clearly had control over – there was even a Voldemort Day. And even in the *Deathly Hallows*, we see that Voldemort had installed the Carrows to try and keep a grip on the school as his power grew.

So, we think it would be highly like that Voldemort would have installed his best and brightest followers at the castle to indoctrinate the students. As Snape was intelligent, we could easily see him being someone Voldemort thought suited for a role there. And if he was allowed to teach the Dark Arts, we can actually see him being pretty happy.

## Would Harry have died as a baby?
When Snape heard the prophecy and pleaded with Voldemort to spare Lily’s life, he may have inadvertently caused his downfall. While we know Voldemort killed Lily, he did give her a choice. If she stepped aside and allowed him to murder Harry, he would spare her. Lily refused and sacrificed herself to save her son. That action (and Lily’s love) was what gave Harry protection from Voldemort’s Killing Curse. Arguably, if Voldemort hadn’t given her a choice, then Harry wouldn’t have been protected, probably would have died and the curse wouldn’t have rebounded. Consequently, if it wasn’t for Snape’s intervention the story could have looked very different. 

So, we think it is safe to assume that without Snape loving Lily, there would have been a strong possibility that Harry would have died as a baby. We doubt he would have fought so hard to try and save her life. We also think that Voldemort would not have given her a choice and would have killed her on sight. Without the opportunity to put herself between Harry and Voldemort, Lily’s love may not have protected Harry and he would have been left vulnerable. 

Even though Snape’s goal was to protect Lily, he ultimately saved Harry and set off the chain of events that would eventually lead to Voldemort’s end. It is possible that his unrequited love ended up saving the wizarding world from Voldemort’s tyranny.

## Would Harry have been able to complete the Horcrux hunt? 
When Harry discovers the sword of Gryffindor in a frozen pool in the Forest of Dean – his Horcrux hunting prayers had been answered. Having been impregnated with Basilisk venom, the sword was the perfect tool for destroying the pieces of Voldemort’s soul. Though, if it wasn’t for Snape, the sword may have remained out of Harry’s reach. It was Snape who placed the sword there for Harry to discover – and ensured that it was under the conditions of need and valour. He followed Dumbledore’s plan, even though he didn’t know why Harry needed the sword, because he still felt as though he had a duty to protect him. 

Now if he had never loved Lily, he would probably have never felt compelled to look out for Harry. He would probably not have been the person to give Harry the tool he needed to destroy Voldemort – especially if was still a Death Eater. Now that is not to say that Harry wouldn’t have ended up with the sword at all. It is supposed to appear to those true Gryffindors that are worthy of it – and we know that Harry had met that criterion before, when he pulled it out of the Sorting Hat in his second year. So, with that in mind, we think that Harry’s Horcrux hunt may have been delayed but he would still have been able to eventually gather what he needed to ensure Voldemort’s death.

Now that you've finished listening, here's a few things we got to thinking about during this moment.

## Hogwarts has HOW MANY staircases?

142, to be precise. And yes, as Harry realises, they do like to change around too! Hogwarts has so many mysteries everywhere you turn, it's impossible to know them all. This is certainly not your average castle. Even the headmaster Albus Dumbledore admits to not knowing Hogwarts's many, many secrets. 

## The Hogwarts Portraits 

As Harry roams around the castle, he notices that the subjects of Hogwarts portraits are far more animated than our Muggle ones. They can walk, talk and even visit each other's portraits. [According to J.K. Rowling](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/hogwarts-portraits), these portraits are created when the 'subject' of the painting sits for them during their lifetime. Then, the more they talk to their portraits, the more lifelike the portrait will end up being.

## The Hogwarts ghosts... and Peeves 

In the clip above, we also get acquainted with the many ghosts that haunt Hogwarts - and one poltergeist called Peeves. The ghosts (and Peeves) have lived at Hogwarts for hundreds upon hundreds of years, and there have been many attempts to oust the mischievous Peeves. [All of them failed, naturally.](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/peeves) Also, did you know that the word ‘poltergeist’ is German in origin, and roughly translates as ‘noisy ghost’? Certainly works for Peeves! 

Each Hogwarts house has a representative ghost, with Nearly Headless Nick representing Harry's house, Gryffindor. Which of the Hogwarts ghosts would you like to know more about?

## If you’re a nerd and proud… you’re like Scorpius Malfoy
Are you somebody that is happiest when learning something new? Do you spend most of your time with your nose in a book? Are you unafraid to be your geeky self – even when others don’t appreciate it? If this sounds anything like you, you’re like Scorpius Malfoy.

Scorpius was one Slytherin that was not ashamed or scared to embrace his nerdy side. He took pride in his schoolwork, enjoyed reading and was ambitious when it came to his magical knowledge. If anything, studying hard seemed to be Scorpius’s happy place. His best friend (and fellow Slytherin) Albus recognised this and said that a good way to distract Scorpius from difficult emotional issues was to take him to the library. And despite Albus’s gentle teasing, Scorpius never pretended to anything other than his excellent boffin self – and neither should you.

## If you’re prepared to do what is right rather than what is easy… you’re like Leta Lestrange 
Leta Lestrange was by no means perfect. She had a history of lashing out at those who wronged her, and she didn’t always seem to be a great friend for Newt. However, while Leta was flawed, she ultimately stood up to protect those she loved. During *Crimes of Grindelwald*, when she realised that Newt and Theseus were in peril, she caused a distraction to aid in their escape. It worked – but she ended up paying the ultimate price and was engulfed in Grindelwald’s flames. 

If you’re someone who has had to make some difficult decisions to protect those you care about, then you’re like Leta Lestrange. While it might be nice to have an easy life – your conscience wouldn’t allow it and you’re a stronger person for it.
