## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

### James Potter
This confident (who certain people might call arrogant) [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) happened to be the father of the one and only [Harry Potter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter). A talented wizard, [James](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/james-potter) often used his abilities to cause all sorts of mischief – normally with right-hand man Sirius – whilst a student at Hogwarts. The pair of them have even been compared to fellow pranksters [Fred](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/fred-weasley) and [George Weasley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/george-weasley). He also happened to be a talented Quidditch player and was a [Chaser](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/chaser) on the Gryffindor team. Sometimes known by his [Marauder](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/marauders) moniker, Prongs, he and his fellow friends did channel some of their energy into accomplishing some pretty complex magic while at school. The [Marauder’s Map](/fact-file/objects/the-marauders-map) was the result of one such escapade. While the other Marauders might have thought he was the bee’s knees, fellow Gryffindor [Lily Evans](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lily-potter) was not so keen… at least until their seventh year at Hogwarts.

### Sirius Black
This young rebel loved to push boundaries and break the mould – starting with being sorted into Gryffindor when the rest of his [pure-blood fanatic family](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-black-family) belonged to [Slytherin](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/slytherin). He and James were the two founding members of the Marauders, having become firm friends while aboard the [Hogwarts Express](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hogwarts-express). [Sirius’](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sirius-black) impulsive streak did cause him some issues while at school and could tip over into unkindness – especially towards a certain long-haired Slytherin. However, fundamentally Padfoot (his Marauder name) was a good person who stood against Dark magic and was entrusted with the role of godfather to a young Harry Potter.

### Remus Lupin
The Marauder known as Moony might have been the best [Defence Against the Dark Arts](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/defence-against-the-dark-arts) teacher that Harry ever had, but there was so much more to the talented [Remus Lupin](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/remus-lupin). Intelligent, kind and often an outsider, Lupin found his place amongst the Marauders. While this Gryffindor did have a *furry little problem* that needed to be kept under wraps, his friends embraced every part of Remus – something he rarely experienced. While he was often the conscience of the group, he did end up a [Prefect](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/prefect), he could have the odd moral wobble… especially when it involved turning a blind eye to the activities of the more *rambunctious* Marauders.

### Peter Pettigrew
The final member of the Marauders, [Peter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/peter-pettigrew) (also known as Wormtail), was the weak link in the group. He might have been sorted into Gryffindor, but courage was not something he was known for. Pettigrew was always on the lookout for those more powerful than him – especially those who could offer him some form of protection. At school that was fellow Gryffindors James, Sirius and Remus – who he tagged along with until the latter eventually asking him to join their gang out of the kindness of his heart. He stayed loyal to them throughout school, with his name even featuring as one of the creators of the Marauder’s Map. After school? Well, let’s just say he took a different path to his school friends.

## 1. The first-ever Hogwarts start-of-term feast

Harry’s mouth fell open. The dishes in front of him were now piled with food. He had never seen so many things he liked to eat on one table: roast beef, roast chicken, pork chops and lamb chops, sausages, bacon and steak, boiled potatoes, roast potatoes, chips, Yorkshire pudding, peas, carrots, gravy, ketchup and, for some strange reason, mint humbugs.

Bearing in mind [Harry](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) grew up with the Dursleys’ scraps while his [cousin](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/dudley-dursley) got all the spoils, his first-ever [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) feast is a true joy to behold. For anyone not British, they were left wondering what on earth a Yorkshire pudding was. But the bountiful joy of the Hogwarts feast (especially for a skinny, neglected eleven-year-old) surely united us all across the world. And did you also notice the mint humbugs – clearly an addition from the Muggle-sweet-loving [Professor Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore)? A very nice touch.

Harry had never in all his life had such a Christmas dinner. A hundred fat, roast turkeys, mountains of roast and boiled potatoes, platters of fat chipolatas, tureens of buttered peas, silver boats of thick, rich gravy and cranberry sauce – and stacks of wizard crackers every few feet along the table.

And if a regular Hogwarts feast wasn’t good enough, we then got to see what a Christmas dinner at Hogwarts looked like. Spoiler: it was extremely yum. The description of the ‘tureens of buttered peas’ gets us every time. Never has a vegetable seemed so alluring – and the fact this was Harry’s first proper Christmas gave this scene emotional heft.

Professor Lupin had come back. He paused as he entered, looked around and said, with a small smile, ‘I haven’t poisoned that chocolate, you know ...’ Harry took a bite and to his great surprise felt warmth spread suddenly to the tips of his fingers and toes.

It doesn’t always need to be a plentiful feast when it comes to the small pleasures of eating well. During Harry’s unpleasant (to say the least) encounter with a [Dementor](/fact-file/creatures/dementor) aboard the [Hogwarts Express](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hogwarts-express), he was surprised to learn that a bit of chocolate could do so much more than just be delicious. After being left cold and weakened by the heinous creature, his new [Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/defence-against-the-dark-arts), [Professor Lupin](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/remus-lupin), knew what was best for him. Sometimes it’s the simple things that are the most powerful, if consumed in the right moment.

Ron came back five minutes later, carrying three foaming tankards of hot Butterbeer. ‘Happy Christmas!’ he said happily, raising his tankard. Harry drank deeply. It was the most delicious thing he’d ever tasted and seemed to heat every bit of him from the inside.

Ah, of course. The spectre of [Butterbeer](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/butterbeer) loomed large over Harry during *Prisoner of Azkaban*, on account of the fact he couldn’t go to [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) to have any. After hearing the accounts from [Ron](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ron-weasley) and [Hermione](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) on just how great it was, he eventually snuck into the wizarding village to try it for himself. We bet it tasted all the sweeter having to wait for it for so long.

Creamy chunks of nougat, shimmering pink squares of coconut ice, fat, honey-coloured toffees; hundreds of different kinds of chocolate in neat rows; there was a large barrel of Every Flavour Beans, and another of Fizzing Whizzbees, the levitating sherbet balls that Ron had mentioned; along yet another wall were ‘Special Effects’ sweets: Droobles Best Blowing Gum (which filled a room with bluebell-coloured bubbles that refused to pop for days), the strange, splintery Toothflossing Stringmints, tiny black Pepper Imps (‘breathe fire for your friends!’), Ice Mice (‘hear your teeth chatter and squeak!’), peppermint creams shaped like toads (‘hop realistically in the stomach!’), fragile sugar-spun quills and exploding bonbons.

Butterbeer wasn’t the only delicious thing waiting for Harry in Hogsmeade. The luscious confectionary of [Honeydukes](/fact-file/locations/honeydukes) also cast a spell on him – where we discovered even more weird and wonderful sweets not available from the [Trolley Witch’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/trolley-witch) selection. Just seeing the seemingly endless choices at Hogsmeade’s shops really opened up the wizarding world for us even more. And besides the magical options, even just the creamy chunks of nougat sound great.

Harry watched her out of sight, then crawled under his bed, wrenched up the loose floorboard, and pulled out a large chunk of birthday cake. He sat there on the floor eating it, savouring the happiness that was flooding through him. He had cake, and Dudley had nothing but grapefruit; it was a bright summer’s day, he would be leaving Privet Drive tomorrow, his scar felt perfectly normal again, and he was going to watch the Quidditch World Cup.

After Dudley was forced on a diet during another miserable summer at the Dursleys, Harry evaded the banality of grapefruit breakfasts thanks to a little help from his friends. Although birthday cake is delicious, whatever the context, it’s more about the secrecy of enjoying his birthday cake undercover that we love the most about this scene. A sly moment of hidden happiness after weeks of the opposite.

‘Chicken!’ he said hoarsely, after removing the old Daily Prophets from his mouth and throwing them down onto the cave floor. Harry pulled open his bag and handed over the bundle of chicken legs and bread. ‘Thanks,’ said Sirius, opening it, grabbing a drumstick, sitting down on the cave floor and tearing off a large chunk with his teeth.

Bit of a weird one, admittedly, but a moment that sticks in the mind all the same. After having been forced on the run at the end of *Prisoner of Azkaban*, Harry’s Godfather was a sorry state by the time they were able to reunite. Again, the simplicity of this meal is what was important – as poor [Sirius](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sirius-black) ravenously feasted on chicken and bread, snuck out of Hogwarts by Harry. You can feel his hunger emanating from the pages.

Three helpings of rhubarb crumble and custard later and the waistband on Harry’s jeans was feeling uncomfortably tight (which was saying something as the jeans had once been Dudley’s). As he laid down his spoon there was a lull in the general conversation: Mr Weasley was leaning back in his chair, looking replete and relaxed; Tonks was yawning widely, her nose now back to normal; and Ginny, who had lured Crookshanks out from under the dresser, was sitting cross-legged on the floor, rolling Butterbeer corks for him to chase. ‘Nearly time for bed, I think,’ said Mrs Weasley with a yawn.

And of course, we couldn’t talk about the bliss of a well-cooked dish without thinking of the Weasley matriarch, [Molly Weasley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/molly-weasley). Dinnertime at [The Burrow](/fact-file/locations/the-burrow) was always a pleasure thanks to Molly’s enviable culinary skills. And there was just something so wholesome about breakfast sizzling on a pan, or a delicious stew being stirred whenever Harry came to visit.  

Molly upped the ante when certain events forced everybody to move into [Sirius’s decrepit family home](/fact-file/locations/number-twelve-grimmauld-place) – but she would not be deterred by the unwelcoming surroundings. Upon Harry’s first visit there with the [Order of the Phoenix](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/order-of-the-phoenix), tense discussions eventually gave way to Molly’s delicious cooking. [Lord Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) might have been on the ascent, but nothing was going to stop Molly from making her rhubarb crumble.
