## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

The main condition for getting into Hogwarts is that you have the ability to produce magic. Obviously, children don’t use a wand until they attend wizarding school – so this magic is not controlled. Instead, young witches and wizards will demonstrate they are magical by doing something accidentally, often when they are scared or angry.

Strange things happened to Harry before he attended Hogwarts, which he could not explain at the time. When Aunt Petunia gave him a terrible haircut, it grew back overnight. Another time when Aunt Petunia tried to force Harry into a horrible hand-me-down jumper, it shrank. And when Dudley and his gang chased Harry, he found himself out of their reach and up on the roof of the school. Finally, when Dudley thumped Harry in front of the snake in the reptile house at the zoo, the glass vanished. While Harry didn’t know it at the time, he was using his magic. 

It’s not only children who are unaware of the wizarding world that do unintentional magic. In fact, Neville Longbottom’s family were so desperate for him to show any signs of magical ability they tried to force it out of him. He was pushed off Blackpool pier by his great-uncle Algie – though nothing magical happened then. He was also dropped out of a window by the same great-uncle. However, this time he bounced all the way down the garden and into the road, showing that he did have magical capabilities after all. 

So, before children go to wizarding school, they do have magic – which seems to be driven by their emotions. Nevertheless, they don’t have a way to channel or control it, as they don’t have a magic wand.

## If you’re known for being supportive and encouraging… you’re like Filius Flitwick
Professor Flitwick was one of the warmest and most welcoming teachers at Hogwarts. He truly seemed to want the best for all his students and was great at motivating them in a positive way. Unlike some of the other Professors at school, he wasn’t averse to giving praise when it was due or when he felt like a pupil needed a little boost. ## If you are the sporty type… you’re like Cho Chang
Are you an avid sports fan? Do you play for a team (whether it be football, rugby or even tiddlywinks)? Have you been a diehard supporter of your local club since you were a tiny tot? Do you spend lots of time practising and now have quite the reputation? Then you’re like Cho Chang.

Cho may have been known for her relationships with Harry Potter and Cedric Diggory, but it was her sporting ability that we should have been focussing on. ## If you have an air of mystery… you’re like Garrick Ollivander
Ollivander is an incredibly talented wizard – there’s no doubt about that. His wands are legendary and his knowledge of them unparalleled. Yet he remains a secretive fellow. Harry certainly never got quite the handle on who he truly was (and could never fully figure out whether he liked him or not). Though in a lot of ways it makes sense that Ollivander had such an enigmatic air about him, given his profession, as wandcraft is a rather mysterious calling. So, if you’re someone who likes to keep an air of mystery about you, doesn’t give away your secrets easily and keeps their feelings close to their chest, then you’re most like Ollivander.

## If you’re incredibly empathetic… you’re like Luna Lovegood
Luna is probably best known for being quite eccentric – and while that is true – one of her other defining personality traits was her empathy. Luna was perceptive and could read people. She knew if someone was struggling and made sure that she was there for them. Like when she gently explained Thestrals to Harry and made him feel less alone. Or how she encouraged Harry to produce a Patronus during the Battle of Hogwarts and took on the role of teacher. Or how she comforted Hermione after Ron and Lavender became a couple – and these are just a handful (out of many) examples. 

You’re just like the brilliant Luna if you feel things very deeply, but you can also understand and share the feelings of another. We can imagine that you’re the type of person who friends and family turn to when they are going through a hard time. You’re always there to help celebrate or commiserate an important event and are known for being a rock for those you love.

## If you aren’t lacking in self-confidence… you’re like Gilderoy Lockhart
Gilderoy Lockhart certainly didn’t ever underestimate himself. He knew he was exceptionally good looking, good at Memory Charms, famous and beloved by plenty of witches and wizards – and he didn’t feel bad about it. In fact, he embraced it and didn’t try to act humble or downplay who he was. Gilderoy Lockhart believed he was special and seemed to live a pretty happy life as a result.

Lily told us about how she fell in love with the wizarding world at a young age (‘my mother introduced me and read all seven books to me as bedtime stories’) and has been a fan ever since. 

‘What I love most about Harry Potter is how real the Wizarding World feels, even though it is all a fantasy,’ she said. ‘When I watch the movies and read the books, I get completely immersed into this magical universe. The amount of thought put into creating such a detailed and convincing world filled with funny, relatable characters is truly incredible. From the set decorations, to the wardrobe choices, to creating Hogwarts, and developing an entirely new kind of culture from scratch, the Wizarding World is so exceedingly detailed that for a moment I can almost believe that it actually exists. Harry Potter is something that I can always count on if I need a heart-warming and enjoyable escape from reality.’

What if Ginny Weasley had never possessed Tom Riddle's diary?

Before we dive into what could have happened, let’s look at why the diary was so significant in the first place…

When we initially come across Tom Riddle’s diary in *Chamber of Secrets*, we are unaware of just how powerful an object it truly is. At first the diary bought from a Muggle stationary shop seems harmless. The pages are blank after all… but we soon learn there is more to this journal than meets the eye.

Soon we are taken into the diary and shown the memories of Tom Riddle. The diary wants us to believe it was Hagrid who had opened the Chamber of Secrets and Tom who had stopped him. Of course, at this point we were still unaware that Tom was Voldemort. However, when Ginny is taken to the Chamber and Harry goes to rescue her, we soon realise that this is a rather insidious artefact, and that this sentiment applies to its original owner too. 

It was Tom Riddle who had found the Chamber of Secrets during his time at Hogwarts, and it was he who opened it – which led to the death of a student. Having been worried that Hogwarts would be closed because of this murder, Tom pinned the blame on someone else and abandoned his current plan to finish Salazar Slytherin’s work. Instead, he left an enchanted diary which would complete the mission in the future by possessing and manipulating an innocent soul, such as Ginny, to do his dirty work.

If it wasn’t for Harry’s timely intervention, Ginny would have died, and Hogwarts would have closed. When Harry destroyed the diary, he wasn’t just getting rid of an awful object but was also destroying a part of Voldemort’s soul – as the diary turned out to be a Horcrux. 

Yet none of this may have happened if Lucius Malfoy hadn’t slipped the diary into Ginny’s book in the first place. While the Chamber of Secrets remaining sealed would have been a good thing… we can’t help but wonder what impact it would have had on the rest of the story. Would it have changed Ginny? Would it have had an impact on her relationship with Harry? Most importantly, what would it mean for the destruction of Voldemort?

## Would the Chamber of Secrets have reopened? 
When Tom Riddle created the Horcrux out of his diary, he probably didn’t have an exact idea of when it would be used to open the Chamber of Secrets again. In fact, it wasn’t his decision to open it at all. That was all down to Lucius Malfoy and his vindictive desire to get one over on Arthur Weasley. We think it is pretty safe to say that there is a fair chance that the Chamber would have remained closed in Harry’s second year at Hogwarts. We also reckon that could have extended to Harry’s entire time at school. We highly doubt that there was any pupil at Hogwarts who would have had the capability to open the Chamber, even if they did have strong anti Muggle-born views (like Draco Malfoy for instance). So, without the diary we reckon it might have stayed shut.

We also think that the Chamber may not have been opened if the diary had come into the possession of someone who wasn’t as vulnerable as Ginny. For Tom Riddle's plan to work, he required an innocent soul who needed a friend. They had to pour themselves into the diary and be completely open. If they were guarded, he might not have been able to possess them and force them to carry out his plan. He also needed someone who would be too frightened to own up to what was happening or ask for help. Ultimately, the person who owned the diary could not suspect its true motives. While we don’t deny that there could have been other students who were susceptible, at that moment, Ginny was the perfect target.

Nevertheless, we’re not saying that it could never have been opened at another moment in time. Lucius Malfoy didn’t seem to understand just how valuable the diary actually was to Voldemort or that it contained a piece of his soul. He just thought it was an excellent way to get rid of Muggle-borns. So, even though he was supposed to take care of it, we imagine he wouldn’t have been able to pass up on an opportunity to try and have the Chamber of Secrets opened again. He might not have chosen Ginny, but he still would have given it a go in the years before Voldemort returned to power.

## Would the sword of Gryffindor have been so important?
The sword of Gryffindor was integral to the plot of the *Chamber of Secrets* – it was what killed the Basilisk. And as the sword is Goblin-made, it was built to imbibe only that which makes it stronger. Therefore, when the sword was used to kill the King of Serpents, it became impregnated with its venom. Now this made the sword an invaluable object as Basilisk venom is one of the very few substances that can obliterate a Horcrux. Without it, the sword would not have been powerful enough to destroy one. If Ginny hadn’t opened the Chamber of Secrets, Harry would probably have been oblivious to the sword, and it would not have been as important. 

It was not just the hunt for Horcruxes that made this sword so special, it was also because of what it symbolised. If Harry hadn’t known about it, he may never have had the reassurance that he belonged in Gryffindor. It was the discussion he had with Dumbledore, after he returned from the Chamber (with the sword), that led him to realise that it is our choices rather than our abilities that make us who we are. Without it, his worries about his Slytherin traits would probably have become worse and made life even more difficult for him.

Ultimately, we reckon that the sword of Gryffindor would not have been an important element in the stories if Ginny didn’t have the diary. Harry would probably not have encountered it. Even if he had come across it, it would not have been a crucial tool in the Horcrux hunt but a rather beautiful, if decorative, object.

## Would the trio have had more trouble hunting Horcruxes and defeating Voldemort? 
We’ve briefly touched upon the importance of the sword of Gryffindor as a means to destroy Horcruxes and with that in mind, the short answer would be yes. 

If Ginny didn’t have the diary, the subsequent events would not have occurred, and this would have left our trio with no means of getting rid of the Horcruxes. While we know there are other ways of disposing of one, it requires magic that is very powerful and often unstable. Fiendfyre is one example of this. Though, as we saw with the death of Crabbe, it was incredibly dangerous and almost uncontrollable – even Hermione didn’t think she had the skill to handle it. 
We also think that even if the trio had been able to discover another method for destroying Horcruxes, it would have taken them a long time to figure it out and even if Voldemort wasn’t victorious, he would have remained powerful for a much longer period of time.  

It is also possible that Voldemort may never have been destroyed. Without the discovery of the diary, Dumbledore and Harry may never have known about the piece of Voldemort’s soul concealed in it. As someone who hated everything to do with Muggles, it seemed like an odd choice of Horcrux for him. It certainly went against his regular pattern of wanting to use objects that almost seemed like trophies – such as Slytherin’s Locket or Ravenclaw’s Diadem. 

Similarly, if Lucius Malfoy had held onto it for a couple more years, the diary would have been back in Voldemort’s grasp and much harder to access. We doubt that Voldemort would have let something so important out of his sight once he knew that his Horcruxes were under threat. We also don’t know if Harry, Ron and Hermione would have been able to get close enough to take it from his possession.

## Would Ginny not have become as strong a witch? 
This is an interesting question. There is no doubt that Ginny came away from her experience with the diary and the Chamber of Secrets as a more resilient and wiser person. It was Ginny who was incredulous in *Half-Blood Prince*, when she found out that Harry had been taking orders from something someone wrote in a book. She knew just how dangerous it could be because of her experience and was a lot warier and a lot less naïve when it came to objects of unknown origin. 

Furthermore, the aftermath of this event probably forced Ginny to develop quite a tough skin. As we learn in *Cursed Child*, Ginny was shunned by her peers for a long time and probably felt quite isolated. But rather than letting that incident crush her, she remained confident and put on a cheery face – even though she still carried the weight of that horrific ordeal. 

Yet, we reckon Ginny would still have been as fierce and as strong even if she hadn’t had been through any of that. This was the witch who had been breaking into the Weasley’s broom shed since the age of six and taking each of her brothers’ brooms in turn to practice. She was also determined to be in the thick of things – whether that was as a member of Dumbledore’s Army, fighting underage in the Battle of Hogwarts or her schemes with Fred and George. Ginny Weasley had always been a strong and capable witch. While this incident may have influenced her personality – it didn’t change who she was.

## Would Ginny and Harry have ever become a couple?
We are pretty certain that Harry and Ginny would have still become a couple. Even if the Chamber of Secrets had not been opened, they still would have been very involved in each other’s lives. She was the sister of his best friend. She was also a fellow Gryffindor. They were both members of Dumbledore’s Army. They both played for the Gryffindor Quidditch team. Their similarities were still there, and we reckon the attraction would have still grown. 

It’s also worth remembering that it wasn’t Harry rescuing Ginny that sparked her crush on him – she was already smitten. She was the one who (probably) sent him a Valentine’s Day card before the events of the Chamber of Secrets, and she had always been flustered and giddy in his presence. Harry saving her may have reinforced those feelings, but they certainly didn’t cause them.

That’s not to say that the diary didn’t have any impact on their relationship. When Ginny was being shunned, it was Harry that reached out to her in the Gryffindor common room and asked her to play a game of Exploding Snap. Even as an adult she recalls how important that gesture was to her – and how it made her feel loved. 

Overall, we think Harry and Ginny would have still been together. They had such similar interests, and their temperaments were well suited. They both were excellent at supporting one another and knowing what each other needed. They handled decisions maturely – like their temporary break up when Harry went to hunt Horcruxes. So, we reckon that even without that awful shared experience, they still would have had many more moments where they would have got to know each other.

## When we realised Sirius didn’t need saving…
Harry had, as Hermione described, a ‘saving-people thing’. If he believed someone was in danger, then he would do whatever it took to save them – with little regard for his own safety. However, his need to protect people meant that he was very reluctant to ask for help or put others in risky situations. So, when he raced to save Sirius without thinking and discovered it was all a ploy, we knew that it would devastate him. ## When we heard there was a prophecy…
We’ve known from the very beginning that Harry’s parents were killed by Voldemort. However, it wasn’t until this moment that we thought to ask why they had been targeted and hunted down. The small glass orb he held in his hand could have been both the answer to his questions and the reason his life turned out the way it did – and the power of that cannot be underestimated. 

>‘And why did he want to steal a prophecy about me?’

## When a Death Eater had an unfortunate run in with Time…
The Department of Mysteries held so many, well… mysteries. The magic that was found there was unlike any we had come across before. One particularly disturbing, yet fascinating, piece that we came across was when a Death Eater fell into the bell jar and Harry, Neville and Hermione watched in horror as a grotesque transformation took place. Of course, Hermione was the first to realise what it actually was...

>‘Look out!’ said Neville, horrified. He was staring at the Death Eater’s head in the bell jar. All three of them raised their wands again, but none of them struck: they were all gazing, open-mouthed, appalled, at what was happening to the man’s head. 
>
>It was shrinking very fast, growing balder and balder, the black hair and stubble retracting into his skull; his cheeks becoming smooth, his skull round and covered with a peachlike fuzz…
>
>A baby’s head now sat grotesquely on top of the thick, muscled neck of the Death Eater as he struggled to get up again; but even as they watched, their mouths open, the head began to swell to its previous proportions again; thick black hair was sprouting from the pate and chin…

## When we didn’t know if Hermione was alive…
One of the scariest moments in the Department of Mysteries was when we didn’t know the fate of Hermione. Having been by Harry’s side since the very beginning, the thought of losing such a brilliant character (at the hands of an unimportant Death Eater) was too horrible to contemplate. While we now know that she thankfully survived, we couldn’t help but feel as terrified and worried as Harry did as he watched her be struck down.

>‘Well done, Ha––’

>But the Death Eater Hermione had just struck dumb made a sudden slashing movement with his wand; a streak of what looked like purple flame passed right across Hermione’s chest. She gave a tiny ‘Oh!’ as though of surprise and crumpled on to the floor, where she lay motionless.

## When Ron was attacked by a brain…
This was another stomach churning and gross moment. Having been hit by a spell that had made him giddy and not in his right mind, Ron decided to use a Summoning Charm in the room full of brains to take a closer look at one of them. What happened next was something straight out of a horror movie and another example of why that particular Ministry department should be considered highly dangerous.

>‘Ha ha ha, Harry, look at it –’ said Ron, watching it disgorge its gaudy innards, ‘Harry, come and touch it; bet it’s weird –’

>‘RON, NO!’ 
>
>Harry did not know what would happen if Ron touched the tentacles of thought now flying behind the brain, but he was sure it would not be anything good. He darted forwards but Ron had already caught the brain in his outstretched hands. 
>
>The moment they made contact with his skin, the tentacles began wrapping themselves around Ron’s arms like ropes. 
>
>‘Harry, look what’s happen– No – no – I don’t like it – no, stop – stop –’

>But the thin ribbons were spinning around Ron’s chest now; he tugged and tore at them as the brain was pulled tight against him like an octopus’s body.

## When Neville and Bellatrix came face to face…
Neville Longbottom’s backstory is incredibly tragic. To know that your mum and dad were tortured into insanity must be difficult to live with. We can’t imagine how painful it would be to have parents that are still physically alive but who have no sense of who they or you are. Then to come face to face with the person responsible for that, is just horrendous. Yet, Neville faced Bellatrix and didn’t break – even when she used the same curse on him that had destroyed his family. That moment was a true testament to Neville’s bravery.

>‘Longbottom?’ repeated Bellatrix, and a truly evil smile lit her gaunt face. ‘Why, I have had the pleasure of meeting your parents, boy.’ 
>
>‘I DOE YOU HAB!’ roared Neville, and he fought so hard against his captor’s encircling grip that the Death Eater shouted, ‘Someone Stun him!’ 
>
>‘No, no, no,’ said Bellatrix. She looked transported, alive with excitement as she glanced at Harry, then back at Neville. ‘No, let’s see how long Longbottom lasts before he cracks like his parents ... unless Potter wants to give us the prophecy.’ 
>
>‘DON’D GIB ID DO DEM!’ roared Neville, who seemed beside himself, kicking and writhing as Bellatrix drew nearer to him and his captor, her wand raised. ‘DON’D GIB ID DO DEM, HARRY!’ 
>
>Bellatrix raised her wand. ‘Crucio!’ 
>
>Neville screamed, his legs drawn up to his chest so that the Death Eater holding him was momentarily holding him off the ground. The Death Eater dropped him and he fell to the floor, twitching and screaming in agony.

## When the Order of the Phoenix appeared…
As the handful of Dumbledore’s Army members who had accompanied Harry were struck down one by one, the situation seemed dire. It looked as though the Death Eaters were going to walk away with what they wanted… and we doubt they would have left survivors. So, when the Order of the Phoenix burst through into the room with the archway, our hearts lifted. Finally, there was a glimmer of hope…

>Then, high above them, two more doors burst open and five more people sprinted into the room: Sirius, Lupin, Moody, Tonks and Kingsley. 
>
>Malfoy turned, and raised his wand, but Tonks had already sent a Stunning Spell right at him. Harry did not wait to see whether it had made contact, but dived off the dais out of the way. The Death Eaters were completely distracted by the appearance of the members of the Order, who were now raining spells down upon them as they jumped from step to step towards the sunken floor.

## When Sirius fell through the veil…
The hope that was inspired by the arrival of the Order soon gave way to total devastation when Sirius Black was killed. The moment he fell through the veil was unbearably awful and we couldn’t believe that Harry has lost yet another parental figure. The fact that he had rushed to Harry’s aid in the same way Harry had tried to go to his just added yet another layer of tragedy to this situation – especially as this horrible night could have been avoided…

>Only one pair was still battling, apparently unaware of the new arrival. Harry saw Sirius duck Bellatrix’s jet of red light: he was laughing at her. 
>
>‘Come on, you can do better than that!’ he yelled, his voice echoing around the cavernous room. 
>
>The second jet of light hit him squarely on the chest. 
>
>The laughter had not quite died from his face, but his eyes widened in shock. 
>
>Harry released Neville, though he was unaware of doing so. He was jumping down the steps again, pulling out his wand, as Dumbledore, too, turned towards the dais. 
>
>It seemed to take Sirius an age to fall: his body curved in a graceful arc as he sank backwards through the ragged veil hanging from the arch. 
>
>Harry saw the look of mingled fear and surprise on his godfather’s wasted, once-handsome face as he fell through the ancient doorway and disappeared behind the veil, which fluttered for a moment as though in a high wind, then fell back into place.

## When Dumbledore and Voldemort duelled… 
To have two of the most powerful wizards in wizarding history battle each other in the Ministry of Magic was both terrible and awesome. We had never seen Voldemort and Dumbledore come face to face in such a way and the resulting skirmish could only be described as epic…

>There was a burst of flame in midair above Dumbledore just as Voldemort reappeared, standing on the plinth in the middle of the pool where so recently the five statues had stood. 
>
>‘Look out!’ Harry yelled. 
>
>But even as he shouted, another jet of green light flew at Dumbledore from Voldemort’s wand and the snake struck – 
>
>Fawkes swooped down in front of Dumbledore, opened his beak wide and swallowed the jet of green light whole: he burst into flame and fell to the floor, small, wrinkled and flightless. At the same moment, Dumbledore brandished his wand in one long, fluid movement – the snake, which had been an instant from sinking its fangs into him, flew high into the air and vanished in a wisp of dark smoke; and the water in the pool rose up and covered Voldemort like a cocoon of molten glass. 
>
>For a few seconds Voldemort was visible only as a dark, rippling, faceless figure, shimmering and indistinct upon the plinth, clearly struggling to throw off the suffocating mass –

>Then he was gone and the water fell with a crash back into its pool, slopping wildly over the sides, drenching the polished floor.

## When Cornelius Fudge could no longer deny the return of Voldemort…
The moment that the obstinate and weak Minister for Magic finally acknowledged the return of Voldemort, we breathed a sigh of relief. Harry and Dumbledore had been vilified for an entire year because this fool had refused to believe them and poisoned many others against them. So, to see Fudge finally have to face the truth was very cathartic.

>‘He was there!’ shouted a scarlet-robed man with a ponytail, who was pointing at a pile of golden rubble on the other side of the hall, where Bellatrix had lain trapped only moments before. ‘I saw him, Mr Fudge, I swear it was You-Know-Who, he grabbed a woman and Disapparated!’ 
>
>‘I know, Williamson, I know, I saw him too!’ gibbered Fudge, who was wearing pyjamas under his pinstriped cloak and was gasping as though he had just run miles. ‘Merlin’s beard – here – here! – in the Ministry of Magic! – great heavens above – it doesn’t seem possible – my word – how can this be –?’
