## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

## If you’ve always been incredibly ambitious... you’d work as the Minister for Magic 

Do you always have 14 hobbies on the go at once? Were you that kid in exams always asking for more paper? Are you constantly worrying about how to improve upon yourself? First of all, we think you’re doing great, and secondly, we think you’re doing so great, you’d have the potential to take on the top job in the wizarding world.  

The wizarding world has had several Ministers for Magic over its long rule, some of them good, some of them so bad that one actually proposed a [“Dementor breeding program”](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/ministers-for-magic). But the ones that succeeded brought great progression to the wizarding community – and we believe that’s exactly what you could do. After all, Hermione Granger was an over-achiever, just like you, and look where she ended up. 

## If you’re good with people... you’d work at the Department of International Magical Cooperation 

This job sounds like it requires a lot of meetings, so if you’re a social butterfly, this could be a role you could really embrace. This is where Percy Weasley started his political career, although the entry-level jobs for this department are more concerned about regulations for cauldron thickness than shaking hands with great wizarding world leaders.

But, if you stuck it out, we imagine this job could take you round the world, involve creating magical laws, and help to unite nations and embrace other wizarding cultures. So, if you put as much passion into the safety of cauldron bottoms as you do when it comes to meeting people, this job could be perfect for you. Eventually.

## If you want something relatively straight-forward... you’d work at the Misuse of Muggle Artefacts Office  

You’ll know this Ministry of Magic sub-department well, as it’s where our much-treasured Arthur Weasley worked. Ron may call it “the most boring department” but excuse us. Actually, the Misuse of Muggle Artefacts department is sometimes very interesting. Sometimes, it can involve a Muggle teapot that’s gone berserk. Sometimes it gets even crazier, when regurgitating toilets get involved. 

Alright, so it’s not as interesting as, say, being an Unspeakable at the Department of Mysteries (more on that in a moment) but it does sound like a good job to get stuck into if you want a job that’s dependable and relatively harmless. Moseying around London and magically fixing regurgitating toilets doesn’t sound all bad, especially if you have a huge family waiting for you at home. You’d get to travel round, see some of the mad ways Muggle artefacts have been tampered with, and be able to improve a lot of confused Muggles’ days. Not that they’d know about it – you have to perform a lot of Memory Charms in this job.

## If you are good at keeping secrets... you’d work at the Department of Mysteries 

One of the most enigmatic jobs in the Ministry of Magic lies in the Department of Mysteries, where employees are so secretive, they are called Unspeakables. 

Although we don’t know much about what the Unspeakables actually do, we learnt about their department during Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, where Harry and his friends learnt about different rooms specialising in different abstract concepts, such as love, death and time. So, if you’re good at keeping secrets, this is the job for you. But be warned: as interesting as this job sounds, it also sounds very dangerous – but maybe that’s more the case when Lord Voldemort suddenly has an interest in your department...

## If you’re a competitive person or are a sports obsessive... you’d work at the Department of Magical Games and Sports 

This department specialised in Quidditch, Gobstones and other wizarding world activities. We got to learn a little bit about it during the Quidditch World Cup, where former player, Ludo Bagman, worked during his post-sporting career. We even got a glimpse of its office in *Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoeni*x, where the office was described as ‘untidy-looking’ and a wizard was spotted with an armful of brooms. 

All in all, this job sounds like a lot of fun for a sports enthusiast and would certainly involve getting tickets to all the big matches. But we imagine, with a dangerous sport like Quidditch to look after, it wouldn’t be all... fun and games. 

## If you just want Harry’s job... you’d work at the Department of Magical Law Enforcement 

This department is perhaps most famously known for the fact it is where Aurors work, although it has a series of sub-divisions. It was Harry’s main goal to become an Auror (no surprises after his dealings with Lord Voldemort) which he fulfilled after the events of the Battle of Hogwarts. In his later years, he would go on to become the head of the department. 

So, if you want to follow in the footsteps of the Boy Who Lived, defeating the Dark Forces of the wizarding world and helping to attain justice wherever you roam, this is the job to sign up for. 

## If you’re talented at solving problems quickly... you’d work for the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes 

This job requires quick-thinkers and people who don’t get stressed out easily – and the clue is in the title as to why. Jobs within this department include the likes of the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad, who help sort out situations such as... inadvertently blowing up your Aunt Marge, for example. Those that are particularly adept at Memory Charms may become professional Obliviators.

Basically, this department is for selfless people who know how to tidy up other peoples’ messes – so you need to be made of strong stuff to work here. 

## If you love to travel... you’d work at the Department of Magical Transport 

From Portkeys to Floo Powder, this department takes care of all the magical ways a wizard or witch gets from point A to point B, and gave us the likes of [the Hogwarts Express](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/the-hogwarts-express) and [the Knight Bus.](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/the-knight-bus)

Depending on which section you worked in, you could end up developing the next big mode of magical transport – or maybe you’d just end up fining people for unauthorised Apparition. Either way, we imagine this job would require a bit of travel, just from the sheer nature of it.

__Before we dive in, we just want to let you know there are a couple of spoilers for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald – so proceed with caution!__

## Two words: Niffler babies 

Nifflers are adorable. Everything about them is cute and squishy – from their tiny paws to their little snouts. Adult Nifflers are delightful, but the babies take it to a whole new level. When we meet them in The Crimes of Grindelwald, they are little balls of mischievous fluff that you just want to snuggle. Even though they had escaped from their home in Newt’s basement to cause chaos upstairs, we imagine he couldn’t stay mad at them for very long… we know we couldn’t.

## They are excellent treasure hunters

Nifflers love all things shiny (who can really blame them) and are excellent at spotting anything potentially valuable. When we meet them for the very first time in Goblet of Fire, it is in one of Hagrid’s better Care of Magical Creatures lessons. Each student takes a Niffler and sends them digging for the gold coins Hagrid has hidden. They are so efficient Ron even queries whether he could have one for a pet. Though we wouldn’t recommend it – as nothing gets in the way of their search for treasure and they can be rather destructive. We’re not sure the furnishings in The Burrow could take it.

## They know how to accessorise 

It’s all well and good collecting any sparkly thing you see – but where do you keep your loot? If you are a Niffler, you keep it in your amazing little pouch of course. When Newt catches his one taking a turn as a bank robber, we get a glimpse at just how handy it is. It never seems to end! When Newt turns him upside down and gives him a good shake so much falls out – far more than you would think physically possible. Imagine just how useful that could be and all the things your Niffler could carry for you!

## They are a constant source of entertainment

While it may not be intentional, there is no doubt that Nifflers are thoroughly entertaining. Who can forget the hilarious moment when someone managed to sneak one into Professor Umbridge’s office? Not only did it tear the room apart in its search for shiny things, but it even tried to take the rings from her fingers – a deeply satisfying moment for us all. Or what about the moment in Fantastic Beasts when Newt’s Niffler broke into a jewellery store and proceeded to cause (very cute) chaos? No matter the situation, you’re guaranteed to be amused if one of these furry little beasts are around, despite all the mess.

## They can actually be helpful (sometimes)

Nifflers do have a reputation for only caring about twinkly things – but that isn’t strictly true. They can sometimes be helpful. In fact, it was Newt’s Niffler who managed to steal the blood pact from Grindelwald despite getting injured in the process. The vial may have been a super shiny pendant – but we still believe he knew it was more important than ordinary treasure. So yes, they may be little kleptomaniacs, but there is definitely more to them than that. We believe that they can be loyal and useful – if they’ve not been distracted by anything sparkly that is.

## Spells

__Alohomora__

A handy unlocking charm also known as the ‘thief’s friend’. Hermione used this spell to open a door on the forbidden third-floor corridor when she, Ron, Harry and Neville were hiding from Argus Filch. She probably regretted choosing that hiding place though, seeing as a certain three-headed dog was on the other side of that locked door!

__Hermione’s bluebell flames__

Hermione seemed to have a real knack for conjuring portable flames that could be carried in a jar. While we never hear the incantation for this spell – it makes quite a few appearances. From keeping Harry, Ron and Hermione warm when standing outside, to setting Snape’s robes on fire and even using them to escape the Devil’s Snare – this neat little spell is certainly versatile!

__Locomotor Mortis__

This is the Leg-Locker curse. Draco Malfoy used this spell on poor Neville, binding his legs together so he had to hop all the way back to the Gryffindor common room! It is also mentioned when Hermione and Ron prepare to use it on Professor Snape. They were worried that he might try to harm Harry during a Quidditch match. Luckily, they didn’t need to use it – we can’t imagine how they would have explained that to an irate Snape!

__Petrificus Totalus__

This is the full Body-Bind curse. Hermione used this spell on Neville when he bravely stood up to her, Harry and Ron and tried to stop them from leaving the common room at night. You really have to feel for Neville – not only were his legs bound by Malfoy, but he also had to deal with his whole body being locked together by someone who he considered a friend. 

__Sunshine, daisies, butter mellow…Turn this stupid, fat rat yellow__

Ron used this spell to try and turn Scabbers yellow on the Hogwarts Express. Fred and George were the ones who taught him this – and we can’t help but think that it probably wasn’t a real spell and they were just pulling his leg. That’s siblings for you!

__Transfiguration__

We don’t learn any incantations for Transfiguration spells in the Philosopher’s Stone, but we certainly see a lot of them. There’s Professor McGonagall turning herself into a cat, Hagrid giving Dudley a rather fetching tail and Harry’s first Transfiguration lesson where McGonagall turned her desk into a pig. All these spells were cast non-verbally – and all were rather impressive. 

__Wingardium Leviosa__

All together now – swish and flick! Professor Flitwick taught this charm to his first-year students – and it certainly came in handy for our main trio. On the very day they learnt the spell (and of course Hermione was the first to crack it), they found themselves face-to-face with an angry troll in the girls’ bathroom. Ron successfully used the spell to levitate the troll’s club and dropped it on his head – knocking him out and saving Hermione in the process.

## Plants

__Devil’s Snare__

Devil’s Snare is a plant that thrives in the damp and dark but retreats from light and warmth. It was used as the first obstacle through the trapdoor – winding its way around Harry and Ron in a surprising turn of events towards the end of our adventure. Thankfully, Hermione paid attention in Herbology, and knows that the way to get out of Devil’s Snare is to remain still and create fire. This is certainly not a plant to be messed with.

## Magical Creatures

__Centaur__

We first meet the centaurs when Harry, Hermione, Neville and Malfoy find themselves in detention in the Forbidden Forest. With the head, torso and arms of a human and the body of a horse – these magnificent beings are highly intelligent and also highly secretive. They are mistrustful of humans and prefer to keep their distance. However, young Firenze the centaur is helpful towards Harry.

__Fluffy the three-headed dog__

Only Hagrid could look at a three-headed dog and think that Fluffy is the perfect name. This huge and frankly terrifying beast guarded the trapdoor which led to the Philosopher’s Stone. If you want to try and get past him, you better have a musical instrument ready – as only a soothing tune will send him to sleep. Be careful though – as soon as the music stops, he will wake up and we wouldn’t like to be you when he does!

__Giant Squid__

The Giant Squid lived in the lake at Hogwarts and seemed to be quite tame. In fact, it would even interact with students when it made its way to bask in the shallows. Fred, George and their friend Lee Jordan were known to give its tentacles a good tickle every now and then!

__Unicorn__

Unicorns are wonderful creatures with magical properties. When they are young, they are a gold colour before turning silver and eventually pure white. Unicorns are known to generally avoid humans, but they are more likely to allow a witch rather than a wizard to approach them. Unfortunately, our introduction to these magnificent beasts is rather sad. The first one we meet has been killed in the Forbidden Forest, but luckily, this isn’t the last unicorn we see, as some make an appearance later in the series. 

__Norbert the Norwegian Ridgeback__

Norbert was Hagrid’s baby Norwegian Ridgeback – hatched from an egg that he won in a game of cards. Norbert was one of the rarer types of dragon and had a nasty nip! In fact, poor Ron ended up in the hospital wing with a horrid bite thanks to those venomous fangs. This Norwegian Ridgeback is only the beginning when it comes to wizarding world dragons – there are many different types that we learn about in later books.

## Potions

__Draught of Living Death__

What do you get if you add powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood? The Draught of Living Death of course! While this powerful sleeping potion might not physically appear in the book, it is the answer to the very first question Snape asks Harry in his very first Potions lesson. 

__Elixir of Life__

This handy potion makes those who drink it immortal! A product of the Philosopher’s Stone (which can also turn things to gold), it is the reason why Voldemort is desperate to get his hands on it. It is also the potion that allowed the alchemist Nicolas Flamel to reach his 665th birthday and his wife Perenelle to reach her 658th!

__Potion to cure boils__

A simple potion to cure boils – well, simple for some it seems! This potion was the first potion Harry ever made and at least his attempt was better than Neville’s. Who can forget how our favourite clumsy Gryffindor managed to melt Seamus’s cauldron, flood the dungeon with the potion and end up covered in angry red boils? 

__The potion puzzle__

When Harry, Ron and Hermione go through the trapdoor, one of the obstacles on the way to the Philosopher’s Stone is a baffling potion puzzle. Faced with seven bottles, they must solve the riddle and select the right one to move on (easier said than done when three of the bottles would kill them outright!). This game of life and death was solved by a 12-year-old Hermione Granger – certainly the cleverest witch of her age.

Whether you want to catch Dark wizards as an Auror or do highly secret things as an Unspeakable, if you’re someone who is career driven and ambitious, the Ministry of Magic is the location for you.

The world can be busy and loud and for some this can be a little overwhelming. If you have ever felt the urge to switch off from it all and go on your own adventure, then the Forbidden Forest is where you belong. While it isn’t the safest of places (why else would it be forbidden to Hogwarts students?), it is a forest full of mysteries and secrets that your wandering mind can't help but want to explore! Home to weird, wonderful and often dangerous creatures – such as Unicorns and Acromantula, it is not for the faint of heart. But for fearless adventurers, who want a break from the modern world, it is the perfect idyll.

There is nothing like sharing a few stories over a pint of Butterbeer with a friend – and the Three Broomsticks is a great place to do that. Packed full of characters, you never quite know who you are going to meet. Witches, wizards, warlocks, dwarfs... you'll definitely bump into Hagrid who is known to congregate there. Wizarding pubs are also spaces where secrets are spilled, and deals are made – you never know what you might hear (or what creature you might be offered). ## If you’re a shopaholic… we can see you in Diagon Alley
The hustle and bustle of a busy high-street. Shop windows packed full of colourful trinkets. The thrill of finding that perfect item. Any of this tickling your fancy? If the answer is yes – you should take a trip down Diagon Alley. There really isn’t any Muggle shopping experience that can compare. What a wonderful afternoon you could have perusing the beautifully crafted wands at Ollivanders, before having a good rummage through the books at Flourish and Blotts and finally finishing the day with an ice-cream at Florean Fortescue’s.

## If you’re an animal lover… we can see you in Newt Scamander’s case

Are you someone that often prefers the company of animals to humans? Do you feel you understand them in a way you don’t get people? If this is you, then we can see you happily helping Bunty in Newt’s case – surrounded by a multitude of magical creatures. Who wouldn’t want to play with squashy baby Nifflers, meet big-eyed Mooncalves or even admire a rare Thunderbird? ## If family means everything… we can see you at The Burrow

Nowhere says home quite like The Burrow. It may be rundown and ramshackle, but that doesn’t make it any less special or ‘brilliant’ (as Harry first described it). It is a place where anyone can feel as though they are part of a family and Mr and Mrs Weasley wouldn’t have it any other way. There may be bickering, a ghoul in the attic and a constant need for de-gnoming the garden – but warmth and love radiate from every nook and cranny. As do delicious meals and a general sense of cosiness. So, if you’re someone who is at their happiest when safe, secure and surrounded by family, you would slot right into The Burrow and right into the Weasley clan.

If this sounds like you, then we believe that Gryffindor Quidditch Captain Oliver Wood is your perfect pal. There is no doubting Wood’s dedication (even if his teammates don’t appreciate practising at the crack of dawn) but it’s his sportsmanship and loyalty that really shines through. His commitment to his team, his house and his school is unwavering. If you’re someone who values loyalty, passion, and sport – then we think you two would click.

## If you are intent on making the world a better place… you’d hang out with Hermione Granger

Hermione Granger may be known for being the cleverest witch of her age, but she used that intelligence to make the wizarding world a better place. She freed the dragon from Gringotts bank (even though it was dangerous) because she knew it was the right thing to do. She played a crucial role in defeating Voldemort and never wavered in her commitment to the cause. In fact, that dedication to change led to her become Minister for Magic. If you’re someone who can’t let injustice and inequality lie, likes to sign petitions and always does what is right rather than what is easy – then Hermione would be a fan of yours. We can just imagine the two of you standing side by side, at a protest for Muggle-born rights, being a force for good in the world.

## If you love a good gossip… you’d hang out with Ernie Macmillan

Do you feel a little thrill of excitement when you hear a new rumour? Or enjoy bonding over scandal with others? Then you would be friends with Ernie Macmillan. While he is kind, his pompous nature does mean that he has an unfortunate habit of believing everything he hears (like thinking Harry was the heir of Slytherin). Ernie could do with a friend who can help him sort fact from fiction and come to the right conclusions more quickly. If you know the difference between a harmless rumour and a damaging lie, then you would be an excellent influence on Ernie.

## If you would like to find your place in the world… you’d hang out with Albus Potter

Sometimes it can be difficult to navigate the world when you are unsure of your place in it. Maybe you feel you are different to those around you and are not sure what direction your life is supposed to take. If this sounds like you, then Albus Potter would make a great friend. As a Slytherin in a family full of Gryffindors, it is no wonder Albus feels out of place. However, as time goes on, he learns to accept and even like the parts of him that make him a Slytherin (though it wasn’t easy to get to that point). Just like his friendship with Scorpius, we know that Albus would be loyal, patient, understanding and would help you discover who you really are.

## If you are a bit of a klutz… you’d hang out with Neville Longbottom

If you’re someone that finds it difficult to walk in a straight line without tripping over your own feet, then you and Neville Longbottom will have a lot in common. Who can forget how Neville broke his wrist during his first ever flying lesson, left a trail of broken teacups in Divination or just the disaster that was any of his potion lessons? We are sure the clumsy Gryffindor would be thrilled to find an ally who understands that pain. Neville is also incredibly kind, resilient and an excellent friend. With someone like Neville on your team, you will always have someone to help get you back on your feet when you accidentally trip over a pile of broomsticks.

## If you were the popular kid in school… you’d hang out with Cedric Diggory

Are you somebody that is never short of attention? Did everyone at school know your name? Were you never alone unless you wanted to be? Well, that sounds like Cedric Diggory – the heartthrob of Hogwarts, Triwizard Champion and Quidditch player extraordinaire. If you are also an all-rounder with a friendly demeanour and knack for getting people on side – we think you would get on with Cedric. We can just imagine the two of you turning heads and being stared at with expressions of awe and wonder wherever you go. We would certainly feel honoured if we were ever invited to come and hang out in the courtyard with the pair of you.
