## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

When I was growing up, if I banged my knee or cut my hand, to stop myself from crying, I would think about all that Harry Potter had endured in his young life, telling myself that if Harry could survive several Dementor attacks, I could probably be brave about my twisted ankle. The characters of Harry Potter have always been people I could turn to for hope, inspiration and advice (it’s the reason I always check the ceiling for poltergeists), but as I’ve got older, the meanings of some conversations have become more layered.

A moment that has always been special and full of meaning is the exchange between Harry and Remus Lupin in *Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.*
You know the one. “It has nothing to do with weakness.” The words Harry longs and needs to hear, after years of grief, torment and loss. “It has nothing to do with weakness.” Lupin’s acknowledgment of the “horrors” in Harry’s past is such a simple, sigh-of-relief moment for Harry and for us. I think so many of us need to be told that the stress or worries that we feel regularly are not our fault and that we’re handling it in the best way that we can. Harry hasn’t been taught how to forgive himself or even how to like himself so of course, his natural instinct would be to blame himself, especially after a lifetime of bullying at the hands of the Dursleys. Lupin sees this and understands. Perhaps out of everyone Harry has met so far, Lupin understands him the most. As a small boy himself, his life was changed irrevocably when he was bitten by Fenrir Greyback, leading to a lifetime of being shunned and isolated. A couple of years after this chat with Harry, Lupin is still struggling to accept that anyone would be capable of loving him, despite Tonks making her feelings very clear. He doesn’t want to inflict the life he has had onto anybody else but it’s precisely these experiences that make him so perfectly placed to guide a lost and confused Harry.

There are so many times in Harry Potter’s life where his feelings of frustration, loneliness and heartache could have been relieved immeasurably by talking to someone. He, as do many of us, bottles up his feelings to the extent that he explodes at the people who mean the most to him. We see this happen over and over, where pride or embarrassment has overtaken his willingness to seek advice, so for him to actually reach out and ask, “why?” is such a simple but huge step - it’s one of the few times that he asks for help and luckily, Lupin steps up.

We know that in contrast to many of his classmates, Harry has had a tough life and as he has fewer, happy memories to protect him from the Dementors, his worst experiences come to the surface much quicker and with a far more damaging effect. Ron’s reaction to the Dementor on the train is a really good way of showing how different people deal with grief and stress. Ron has had a happy childhood and has never really experienced hardship at this point, certainly not compared to Harry but still, he thought he “would never feel cheerful again”. We’re all on a spectrum, nobody is immune to the effect of the Dementors, no matter how privileged or happy their lives have been. Remember Dudley? I have always wondered what he felt the night when he met the Dementors on a warm, summer’s evening. If anyone had a ‘charmed’ life, it was Diddikins, so did his years of endless torture of Harry come back to haunt him that night? Did the screams of the children he bullied ring in his ears? Who knows but I think of all the characters and creatures we meet in the wizarding world, the Dementors are perhaps the most terrifying because unlike werewolves or dragons or Basilisks, they don't cause physical suffering but they reflect and amplify emotional pain that already exists within their victims. And although a Patronus may banish the Dementors themselves, the memories and the trauma remain because they were always there to begin with and no balm or stitch or phoenix tear will make it better, but time and talking usually helps to heal.

There are so many parallels to be drawn between what witches and wizards hear when they are close to Dementors and that little voice in our head that keeps us awake at night, making us relive our most upsetting and embarrassing moments. Most people have felt that heavy cloud of despair descend, but it’s the people we turn to who offer us hope and help that we remember. Lupin makes it so easy for Harry to be honest, there’s no talk of being brave, or keeping his chin up or being a man. Instead, he says how wise it is to be fearful, which 20 years ago, was quite radical advice for a thirteen-year-old boy. He teaches Harry to recognise the Dementors for what they are - greedy, soulless, evil creatures - while also giving him the confidence and knowledge to fight back, by harnessing his happiest memories, another piece of advice I’ll be following from now on.

While the wizarding world does come with its fair share of terrifying beasts (although Hagrid would beg to differ) there are more adorable magical creatures roaming around too. We’ve put together our favourites for you – just for a good mood boost.

## The Mooncalf 

Now, despite their spindly legs and webbed feet, there’s something about the Mooncalf and those big, bulging blue eyes that just warms our hearts. Mooncalves are also rather odd creatures, as they emerge from their burrows by the light of the full moon to perform ‘complicated’ dances that leave geometric patterns in wheat fields. However bizarre their hobbies may be, it’s safe to say that the Mooncalf definitely beats the werewolf as the cutest creature to come out at night.

## Bowtruckles 

Bowtruckles are not only quite sweet, but extremely useful little tree guardians. Newt Scamander found the creatures so fascinating that he kept one as a miniature sidekick in his pocket – named Pickett. Okay, so Pickett might be a little needy at times, but his loyalty to Newt is unparalleled. We admire that level of dedication.

## Newt Scamander’s Niffler 

Ah, the troublesome Niffler. Destructive, yet one of the fluffiest, cutest creatures in the wizarding world. Perhaps we’re drawn to their mischievous personalities, but Newt Scamander certainly isn’t the only one to have a special place in their heart for the little Niffler. We’d happily have one as a pet, even if it meant our precious items would most likely get stolen. The things we do for love.

## Baby Norberta (aka Norbert the Norwegian Ridgeback)  

We’re certain Ron would suggest we’ve lost our marbles to include Norberta in this list, but we just couldn’t leave her out. Previously known as Norbert, Hagrid’s baby dragon was one of the earliest magical creatures we ever met – so maybe that’s why this creature warmed the cockles of our heart. Or perhaps that’s just the fire-breathing. Of course, baby dragons are still extremely deadly with dangerously venomous fangs, but we still think they’re just as lovely as kittens. No, just us?

## Pygmy Puffs 

We have one stand-out reason for including Pygmy Puffs in this list: they’re just so fluffy. Bred as miniature versions of Puffskeins by the troublesome Fred and George Weasley, the violently pink and purple balls of fluff are one of the more innocent things you can buy at Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes. As if they’re not heart-warming enough on their own, did you know that the collective noun for a group of Puffskeins (or Pygmy Puffs) is called a poffle? A poffle!  

## Fluffy (while asleep only) 

Speaking of things that are fluffy, we thought we’d also give a shout out to the three-headed dog with that exact name. All you’ve got to do is play him a bit of music and he falls right to sleep – how cute is that? We think this perilous canine from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was simply misunderstood.

## Hippogriffs 

And last but by no means least, we have another one of Hagrid’s pets, the Hippogriff. We meet the ever-endearing Buckbeak in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, where he immediately stole our hearts. 

Despite being rather dangerous (as Malfoy found out the hard way) if tamed by an expert, the Hippogriff can be one of the most loyal and helpful creatures – hence their rightful place on the list.

Some call it the “Come and go room” but most know it as The Room of Requirement – which has assumed many forms throughout the Harry Potter books. When Winky the house-elf was recovering from too much Butterbeer, for example, the room turned into a safe haven for her, complete with a bed and Butterbeer antidotes – whereas when caretaker Argus Filch came across it, he simply found a room full of extra cleaning supplies. His dream come true. So, whatever you need – the Room of Requirement’s got you covered. So, what would it become for you?

## If you always love playing host... The Room of Requirement would turn into Dumbledore’s Army headquarters 

Perhaps the most famous ‘state’ of the Room of Requirement that we see in the books is when Harry, Ron and Hermione assemble Dumbledore’s Army, and the room becomes a huge workspace for the students to practise defensive spells in. Full of cushions to fall on and handy spell books to study up with, this version of the room sounded spacious, yet cosy. If you love hosting your friends’ round at your house, we imagine this state of the room would be ideal to create the ultimate hangout hotspot.

## If you love your own secret hangout... The Room of Requirement would turn into Neville’s version of Dumbledore’s Army headquarters

Okay, so this version of the Room of Requirement was quite different to the one Harry ‘found’ in *Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix* to train up the DA. Upon our return to Hogwarts in *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows*, Neville’s version of the Room of Requirement was a special hideout during the horrific reign of the Carrow siblings at the school. It was said to resemble a treehouse or a ship’s cabin, full of hammocks, tapestries, brooms and books. 

So, if you were always making dens as a kid – or had your own treehouse or something similar – we think you’d favour Neville’s version of the room the most! 

## If you have a tendency to be a hoarder... The Room of Requirement would turn into the room of hidden things 

Be honest. Do you have a drawer or box in your house which is full of unexplained wires and chargers that you’re not quite sure what they’re for? Then the Room of Requirement would 100% be turning into ‘the room of hidden things’ for you.

This is where the room held all manner of strange and mysterious magical artefacts that had accumulated over the years. As it turned out, a lot of people in Hogwarts needed to hide certain items... For Harry, this is where he put his copy of the Half-Blood Prince’s annotated version of Advanced Potion Making – but this room is also where you’d find a random Horcrux, should you need one. As a self-confessed hoarder, who simply can’t get rid of that dress you haven’t worn in several years, this huge room is exactly what you need when you just can’t say goodbye.

## If you just like to get away from it all... The Room of Requirement would turn into a broom cupboard 

There are smaller instances where The Room of Requirement appeared to pop up in the Harry Potter stories. Fred and George seemed to come across it once when they were on the run from Filch, where the room turned into a handy broom cupboard for the troublesome pair to hide in. We love that sometimes the room becomes something functional and inconspicuous, always serving those that need it in the cleverest of ways.

So maybe you’re not on the run from Filch, but just fancy a bit of alone time? 

## If you’re a cleaning fiend... The Room of Requirement would simply turn into a place with extra cleaning supplies!

So some Hogwarts residents have slightly more imagination than others, but for Argus Filch, so dedicated to his work as the school caretaker, his version of the Room of Requirement just transformed into a room full of extra cleaning supplies. After all, when you’re chasing round unruly Hogwarts students and Peeves the poltergeist, you’ll need a spare scrubbing brush for emergencies. Confess – do you also get excited at the thought of an extendable mop? Then you and Filch would be best friends! 

## And finally, if you drink a lot of water... The Room of Requirement would turn into a room full of chamber pots! 

Keeping hydrated? Good for you! But you’ll probably be requiring frequent visits to the restroom as a result. No problem – Albus Dumbledore once stumbled upon (what we assumed was) the Room of Requirement absolutely chock-a-block with chamber pots! So, if you love to drink water all day long – we think you’d love it here too.

The universe is vast – and you want to know everything about it, from the world’s great unsolved mysteries to knowing the world’s best knitting patterns. Professor Dumbledore was a hugely celebrated wizard for many reasons, whether it was for his epic duel with Gellert Grindelwald or his discovery of the 12 uses of dragon blood. Life’s too short for horseplay and tomfoolery sometimes – and don’t you and Minerva McGonagall know it. Do you roll your eyes at silly news stories on a frequent basis? Do you have zero time for small talk and general faff? Then, we think you’d love Minerva, Gryffindor’s no-nonsense head of house who felt very much the same. Minerva had a reputation for being strict – and though she was – she also had a devilishly dry sense of humour and a disregard for anything airy-fairy. We can just imagine the pair of you now, chuckling over some biscuits from her tartan biscuit tin, talking about Professor Umbridge’s ludicrous recent behaviour.

## If you’re a selfless and creative person... you’d be best friends with Professor Flitwick 

This kindly Ravenclaw wasn’t just Hogwarts’ Charms professor – but a generally happy wizard who always brought subtle joys to the school, whether that was decorating the castle at Christmas or teaching his students some of the niftiest spells. If you like to cheer up others (despite not being able to cast a Cheering Charm yourself) with your creative ways (maybe you’re really good at wrapping presents or think up the best party games) we reckon you’d adore Filius Flitwick. And we’d definitely attend a soiree hosted by the pair of you – because you guys know how to bring a bit of sparkle to everyday life.

## If you’re always to be found taking photos of your pet... you’d be best friends with Professor Hagrid 

Do you love animals a bit more than people sometimes? Rubeus Hagrid can definitely relate to that, for this is the guy that once treated a baby Norwegian Ridgeback like it was a new-born kitten. We love that Hagrid is always able to see the beauty in some of the scarier magical creatures out there (being best mates with a giant spider, for example) and your love of animals would be perfectly in tune with how Hagrid feels. We can just imagine the two of you now... swapping pet photos over some over-done rock cakes.

## If you’re the sarcastic sort with a dark sense of humour... you’d be best friends with Professor Snape 

Yes, Snape was a bully whose enjoyment of the Dark Arts was deeply, deeply troubling... so it is entirely understandable if you disagree with wanting to be friends with him. But if you did find yourself in the dungeons one day, perhaps your dark sense of humour and sardonic wit would actually make Snape... dare we say it, laugh? Snape did have his moments (his face-off with Professor Umbridge, in particular) where his bitterness and contempt for the world translated into black comedy, and we do always wonder if Snape had hung out with better people, would he have gone down a brighter path.

While the Harry Potter series is mainly set at Hogwarts, there are plenty of references to the big wide wizarding world throughout the books. For example, in *Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire*, Harry learns about other wizarding schools for the first time. We also learn about American wizards and witches in *Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them* and visit the French Ministry of Magic in *Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald*. ## Fleur Delacour - France

*Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire* really opened up what we knew about the wizarding world thanks to the introduction of the Triwizard Tournament. Not only did we cheer on Ireland and Bulgaria for the Quidditch World Cup, but Hogwarts also hosted students from the fellow European schools of Beauxbatons and Durmstrang for the Triwizard Cup. 

Enter Fleur Delacour. 

> As a half-Veela, Fleur caused a stir with the students of Hogwarts - namely Ron Weasley and Roger Davies – who were infatuated with the Beauxbatons student throughout her stay. Although Fleur's school was never visited in the books, she gave us plenty of info about Beauxbatons (which is said to be located [‘somewhere in the Pyrenees'](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/beauxbatons-academy-of-magic)) while complaining about Hogwarts in comparison! Still, the diamond statues do sound lovely.

Zey do not melt, of course . . . zey are like 'uge statues of diamond, glittering around ze place. And ze food is seemply superb. And we 'ave choirs of wood nymphs, ’oo serenade us as we eat."

## Bill's pen friend - Brazil 

Do you remember that Bill Weasley has a disgruntled pen friend in the book series? In the books, this pen friend was not impressed when he heard that he and Bill couldn't go on an exchange trip, and as such, sent him a cursed hat that caused his ears to shrivel up. Well, we’ve all had fallouts with our friends before...

We also know of a [Brazilian wizarding school called Castelobruxo](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/castelobruxo), which is described as "the Brazilian school for magic, which takes students from all over South America, and may be found hidden deep within the rainforest". No offence to Hogwarts, but a rainforest-based wizarding school sounds very picturesque and probably less terrifying than the Forbidden Forest.

> "’Spect they go to some foreign school,'" said Ron. 'I know there are others. Never met anyone who went to one, though. Bill had a penfriend at a school in Brazil . . . this was years and years ago . . . and he wanted to go on an exchange trip but Mum and Dad couldn’t afford it. His penfriend got all offended when he said he wasn’t going and sent him a cursed hat. It made his ears shrivel up.'"

## Viktor Krum - Bulgaria 

Viktor hails from Bulgaria, representing the country at the Quidditch World Cup. While the novels don't reveal much about Bulgarian wizarding life, aside from the country's love of Krum himself (with most Bulgarian tents at the World Cup showcasing posters of the Seeker at the campsite), we also briefly meet the Bulgarian minister, Mr Obalonsk, who is excited to meet Harry Potter, reaffirming that our hero is world famous. 

The minister also has a wicked sense of humour, and pranks Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge by pretending that he couldn't speak any English throughout the Quidditch World Cup. 

> "'Vell, ve fought bravely,' said a gloomy voice behind Harry. He looked around; it was the Bulgarian Minister of Magic. 'You can speak English!' said Fudge, sounding outraged. 'And you’ve been letting me mime everything all day!''

Viktor attended the somewhat [chilly-sounding Durmstrang](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/durmstrang-institute) - a school described as being based in northern Europe, but its exact location is a mystery. According to Draco Malfoy, unlike Hogwarts, the Dark Arts is taught at the school, and Muggle-born students are not invited to attend. Indeed, Durmstrang proved itself to be dangerous after producing one of history's most dangerous dark wizards, Gellert Grindelwald. 

> "'I think Durmstrang must be somewhere in the far north,' said Hermione thoughtfully. 'Somewhere very cold, because they’ve got fur capes as part of their uniforms.'"

## Rudolph Spielman – Germany 

We meet Rudolph Spielman in *Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald*, who works for the International Confederation of Wizards. Spielman played a big role in overseeing the transfer of Gellert Grindelwald to Europe and was the only one to survive Grindelwald’s attack after the Dark wizard escaped. 

Beyond Spielman, we know a few other things about German wizarding history. In *Quidditch Through the Ages*, for example, the country originated the ancient broom game Stitchstock, which involved the players protecting a dragon’s bladder on a pole (lovely!) illustrated by a painting entitled ‘Gunther the Violent is the Winner’!

## Hassan Mostafa - Egypt 

Hassan, the Quidditch referee during the Bulgaria vs Ireland Quidditch World Cup, hails from Egypt. Although little is known about him - except that he has a large moustache, a bald head and is a Chairwizard of the International Association of Quidditch - we know a little about the magic of Egypt as the Weasley family also went there on holiday!

Since Bill works as a Curse Breaker on tombs that were cursed by ancient Egyptian wizards, they family visited him and saw tombs with skeletons of Muggles who had managed to get inside and, according to one of Ron's letters to Harry, had "grown other heads". 

We also know that Egyptian witches and wizards could have attended [Uagadou](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/uagadou), which accepts students from all over the continent of Africa. According to this piece of writing on the school, the students there are particularly proficient at Astronomy, Alchemy and Self-Transfiguration.

## Tina and Queenie Goldstein - USA 

And of course, we were introduced to North American wizarding life in the 1920s thanks to *Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them*. While Newt hailed from England, he went across the pond to meet many American wizards, including the Goldstein sisters, Tina and Queenie, in New York.

As well as magical folk [attending Ilvermorny](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/ilvermorny), which, according to Queenie, is "only the best wizarding school in the whole world", the new films also reveal that the American wizarding community in the 1920s had "rather backwards laws about relations with non-Magic people", and were not allowed to wed non-magical folk. We experienced the difficulties of this law through Queenie’s character when she fell for the No-Maj, Jacob Kowalski.
