## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

Yes, even the most cynical of cynics can’t help but revel in matters of heart: the thrill of the chase, the ones that got away and, quite simply, the joy of hopelessly stanning. 

In the Harry Potter stories, we saw every romantic milestone: first kisses, weddings and will-they-won’t-theys. But what if things had been different? Could those characters have ended up with someone else? And who was the most compatible? 

We asked you to tell us your most unpopular opinions when it came to wizarding world couples, and you all had a *lot* to say. There were many so many fantastic suggestions that we thought they deserved their moment in the spotlight. Here are just a few…

## Harry and Cho should have stayed together
You would’ve thought these two sporty types would’ve been a perfect match: but unlike their positions on the Quidditch pitch, they were *seeking* out the wrong things.

So [Harry’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) first romance ended up being short-lived, full of miscommunication – with a touch of awkwardness. However, that doesn’t mean that Harry and [Cho’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/cho-chang) relationship was devoid of any sweet moments. In fact, some fans thought their relationship was so cute they should end game.

One such person was __gabbyisactive__ who stated: 

*‘Harry should’ve been with Cho Chang, not [Ginny].’*

They weren’t alone, *Darcelle* thought Cho and Harry were a better fit than who he eventually ended up with: 

*‘I actually shipped Harry and Cho Chang more! Harry and Ginny just came out of nowhere, even in the books. Ginny always had a crush on Harry in the books. But all sudden after Harry and Cho Chang broke up, in the 6th book, he wants to be with Ginny. It just came out of nowhere.’*

## Hermione and Draco had a spark
If there was one unpopular opinion that seemed... actually pretty popular amongst fans, it was the idea that that a certain [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) and [Slytherin](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/slytherin) belonged together. In fact, this is one pairing people were rather passionate about. 

As __alievaa.66__ clearly demonstrated with their response: '*HERMIONE AND DRACO SHOULD HAVE BEEN A COUPLE*👹👹👹'.

This was further back up by __Brittany__ who thought no love story is complete without a bit of angst:

*‘Unpopular opinion, Hermione and Draco! Mainly cause the actors had such chemistry. The book didn’t really have that, but it could have made a great love story! Lots of angst, which I love.’*

It’s true Emma Watson and Tom Felton are two rather charismatic people and that makes their chemistry rather special. However, we’re not sure that [Hermione](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) would ever have wanted to be with someone who saw her as inferior just because she was [Muggle-born](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggle-borns) and insulted her at every opportunity. Sorry to burst that bubble!

## Yet some people think he was made for another…
There were some fans who completely disagreed with a Hermione and [Draco](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/draco-malfoy) pairing. Instead, they thought that he would be better off with another member of their year group.

__Kami.laa_iu__ thought these two would make quite the power couple: *‘Malfoy and Pansy would have slayed honestly’.* 

Honestly, we can understand it. These two were part of the same friendship group, they were both [Prefects](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/prefect) and seemed to share the same horrible views – two Slytherin-green peas in a pod!

## Hermione and Ron were better off as friends
While the golden trio were always the best of friends, we got to watch two of its members slowly realise that they were more than that. They were meant to be. But apparently, not everybody holds the same opinion. 

This is something that __Tristan__ felt very strongly about. He felt they lacked chemistry: *‘The trio should have just stayed friends. Ron and Hermione felt so forced. Also I have read the books and stick with what I said’.*

## Though some think Hermione suited another member of the trio better
Although __Tristan__ thought that the whole trio were better off as friends, others went in a different direction, hypothesising that Harry and Hermione should’ve been the resulting couple.

As __leti.mgarcia__ stated quite simply: '*Harry and Hermione belong together* 😌❤️' 

While we can see how the cleverest witch of her age and the Chosen One would make quite the dynamic duo, we can’t help but enjoy their deep, platonic love for one another – they’re like siblings!

## But there’s an unexpected Hufflepuff in the mix…
It appears the fans have lots of strong opinions about who Hermione should have ended up with. We do admit this is one pairing we didn’t see coming. 

As __kamrulhassan56__ told us: *‘Hermione looks great with Cedric’.* 

You know what? These two are both clever, talented and interesting people with tall ambitions, both being made Hogwarts Prefects. We can think of a world in which they would make a smart match. Although would they have been *too* similar?

## Unless that Hufflepuff found love with this character…

An off-piste choice, perhaps, but we get it. They were both known for their popularity, skill and good looks. ## Everybody settles down too young
Hogwarts was meant to be a place of learning. Yet, as a school full of teenagers, it’s inevitable that crushes, romance and first relationships are all going to be part of the experience. However, Hogwarts does turn out rather a lot of couples that end up staying together forever. 

__Dr.unicorn_sam__ spotted this: *‘It’s as if no one leaves high school and meets people later in life* 🤷🏿‍♀️ *everyone just married who they met in Hogwarts.’* 

Yet, for every [Molly](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/molly-weasley) and [Arthur](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/arthur-weasley) who *did* start their love story within the walls of the castle, there was also a [Remus](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/remus-lupin) and [Tonks](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/nymphadora-tonks-fact-file), who may have gone to the same school, but didn’t get together until adulthood. But as the majority of the action takes place within a magical boarding school, we can see how this opinion came to be.

## Hagrid deserved a little more love…
One relationship that we loved watching bloom was the connection between [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) and his fellow half-giant, [Olympe Maxime](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/olympe-maxime). Whilst this fleeting romance warmed our cockles, many fans like __gyroandzero__ wanted to see Hagrid settled down properly: 

*‘Hagrid would have been an amazing family man’*

We agree. Hagrid was a [brilliant father figure to Harry](https://www.harrypotter.com/features/why-hagrid-was-the-best-father-figure-harry-had). He was kind, caring and always there for him. He never missed his birthday, supported his journey into the wizarding world and wasn’t afraid to give him a gentle telling off when needed. Dad goals right there.

## Luna had chemistry with a couple of characters
Did you know that Luna ended up marrying the grandson of [Newt Scamander](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/newt-scamander)? Her and Rolf were two globetrotting Magizoologists with twin sons. That feels as though it suits [Luna](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/luna-lovegood) rather well. However, some fans did not agree. 

__Isa_hinojosa__ suggested: *‘Luna and Neville would have been a great couple...’*

They certainly did seem to have a ‘moment’ at the end of the eighth film and we do love the idea of these two oddballs gravitating towards one another. However, __kandyymist__ thought Luna should have been with someone else entirely: 

*‘Luna and Harry had better chemistry than Ginny and Harry.’*

It’s true that these two were rather fond of each other and seemed to have a spiritual understanding – but could that fondness really have developed into something more?

## Now this is a pairing we didn’t see coming…
Out of all the responses that we got, this was one that we never expected to see. __Sunnuntaisaksofonisti__ shared this opinion with us: 

*‘[Gilderoy Lockhart](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/gilderoy-lockhart) and [Rita Skeeter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rita-skeeter) would be perfect for each other.’*

Would they? Actually, that suggestion does make sense. We could imagine them as rather a *practical* couple. He could use her journalistic connections to make himself an even bigger star. She could have endless exclusive interviews with the man with the giant fanbase. It’s win-win. If the pair of them decided to write a book together? Guaranteed bestseller. And probably not one speck of truth throughout the entire thing.

## Ron let a good thing go too easily…
[Ron](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ron-weasley) eventually ended up with Hermione, but his first girlfriend was the one and only [Lavender Brown](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lavender-brown). Many think that she and him were not the best match and perhaps she was a bit over the top? 

__India.shh__ shared another perspective with us: *‘Lavender and Ron. Lavender is unfairly criticised for being a teenager in love.’*

They definitely have a point. Who can say that they didn’t get a little... over-enthusiastic as a lovestruck teenager? Not many. If these two had stayed the course, who knows? Maybe as they matured, they would have realised that they were a perfect match after all. Look and [Lily](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lily-potter) and [James](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/james-potter): Lily thought Harry’s dad was a bit of a berk during their early school days – but that soon changed in later years.

## If you *love* love, then you would smell the inside of Madam Puddifoot’s teashop 
Valentine’s Day is the best. Who doesn’t like to celebrate love? In fact, love should be celebrated every day. The people you care about should never question your love for them. Luckily, as a love connoisseur you make sure they know just how you feel – whether that’s through grand gestures, small gestures, or any other type of gestures to be honest. But Valentine’s Day is *your* holiday. It’s made for you, and you love it when people go all out for it. You want all the decorations, themed food, music – the works. [Madam Puddifoot’s](/fact-file/locations/madam-puddifoots) certainly did that. That tearoom was a haven for lovestruck couples on Valentine’s Day ([Harry](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) and [Cho](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/cho-chang) excluded), filled with golden cherubs, confetti and a vibe that speak to your positive, perky soul. ## The ‘Crumple-Horned Snorkack’ horn 
If there was one creature that [Luna](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/luna-lovegood) firmly believed in, it was the Crumple-Horned Snorkack. A creature that the wizarding world (except Luna’s dad and his magazine, *[The Quibbler](/fact-file/objects/the-quibbler)*) agreed does not exist. Yet in a world full of magic, why wouldn’t there be a Snorkack? You’ve got all manner of beasts from fearsome dragons, to gross Blast-Ended Skrewts and even the humble Flobberworm – is a Snorkack really out of the realms of possibility? 

For a brief moment it seemed as though they might not be quite as imaginary as everyone thought. [Xenophilius Lovegood](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/xenophilius-lovegood-fact-file) supposedly had the horn of this creature displayed on his wall at home. Well, that notion quickly went out with a bang – literally. Turns out it was a highly explosive [Erumpent](/fact-file/creatures/erumpent) horn. Once again, the validity of the Snorkack shattered, like the Lovegoods' house, as the horn blew into a million pieces.

## The Rotfang Conspiracy 
Don’t underestimate the power of gum disease, it can even topple a government – according to Luna Lovegood. Apparently, the [Auror](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/auror) Office were working together to take over the [Ministry of Magic](/fact-file/locations/the-ministry-of-magic) from the inside using a combination of [Dark magic](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dark-arts) and gum disease. Despite the fact that Professor [Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) seemed rather interested in this theory, we don’t think it is strictly accurate. 

Yes, Dark magic was used to topple the Ministry. Yes, Voldemort had his own people stationed there doing his bidding. However, gum disease did not seem to be running rampant and the Aurors we met – [Tonks](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/nymphadora-tonks-fact-file), [Kingsley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/kingsley-shacklebolt), the real [Mad-Eye](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/alastor-mad-eye-moody) – they all seemed to be working to save the wizarding world and not destroy it. We will confidently call this one a myth.

## That Ron was funny but mean 
Luna had an excellent talent for saying the things that everybody was thinking but nobody wanted to verbalise. She was also incredibly shrewd. This combination led to her making a claim about [Ron Weasley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ron-weasley): 

He says very funny things sometimes, doesn’t he?’ said Luna, as they set off down the corridor together. ‘But he can be a bit unkind. I noticed that last year.’

And you know what? This is one instance where Luna was right. The several times he made [Hermione](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) cry were testament to that. Remember the [Charms](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/charms) lesson where they learnt the [Levitation Charm](/fact-file/spells/the-levitation-charm)? Or the time he blamed Hermione and [Crookshanks](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/crookshanks) for [Scabbers’](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/scabbers) death (even though he was very much alive)? Or the time he left a heartbroken Hermione and devastated Harry on the Horcrux hunt? Yeah, Ron did have a mean streak.  

However, like everybody, Ron contained multitudes. That one small aspect of his personality was more than balanced out by how funny, loyal and good he truly was. Still, this is one Luna claim we would mark as true – thanks to Ron’s sharp tongue.

## Nargles in the mistletoe 
While you might want to avoid mistletoe for various reasons, we doubt it’s because you think it is full of Nargles. What even is a Nargle? We don’t know. Luna seemed to think they like to lurk in festive foliage, so we can assume they are tiny creatures – perhaps bug like? We can’t be sure. What we are sure about, is that this is another conspiracy theory of Luna’s. When Luna first mentioned them to Harry, you might think he was confused about their existence because he hadn’t grown up in the wizarding world. But when other characters like [Cho Chang](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/cho-chang) (who *had* grown up around magic) were equally as bamboozled, we knew our suspicion that this was another fantastical Luna claim was correct.

## The purpose of Spectrespecs 
One thing we loved about Luna was her fashion sense. From her [Butterbeer](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/butterbeer) cork necklace to her radish earrings – she was a true original. However, the brightly coloured spectacles that she liked to wear were more than a fashion choice. When worn, this free gift from *The Quibbler* was supposed to show if there were any Wrackspurts floating around. These little creatures were supposedly invisible and caused brain fog. Again, this was a niche belief of Luna’s that others didn’t share. However, as nobody else seemed to wear a pair of [Spectrespecs](/fact-file/objects/spectrespecs) and Wrackspurts are invisible without them, can we really rule out their existence completely?

## Blibbering Humdingers  
While the existence of the Blibbering Humdinger was a myth, the *idea* of the Blibbering Humdinger did come in handy when Harry wanted to slip away at the end of the [Battle of Hogwarts](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-battle-of-hogwarts). Luna caused a distraction by supposedly spotting one of these creatures and successfully drawing people’s attention away from the Chosen One who had literally *just* defeated [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort). This is one myth that did bring Harry some much needed peace.
