## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

At the Yule Ball, we got to see new sides to the Hogwarts staff and student as they ‘let their hair down’ (McGonagall’s words!) and enjoyed an unconventional school dance. So, which character that attended the Yule Ball do you most relate to?

## If you always stick by your best friend... you would be Ron

If you’re going to a glitzy shindig – chances are you’ll either end up engaging in small talk with scary new people or gluing yourself to your best friend who just so happens to be with you. This is precisely what Ron did at the Yule Ball, sticking firmly by Harry’s side throughout the whole night. This was of great annoyance to his date, Padma, of course, and things didn’t get much better when he took out his jealousy on Hermione in a display of emotional fireworks at the end of the evening. However, we’re not saying you would do any of those things.

Sometimes, parties can just be a bit overwhelming, especially if the person you fancy is at the party too – and attending it with someone else. Although Ron didn’t handle that situation very well, at least he got to be distracted with Harry for a while, especially when they accidentally eavesdropped on quite a personal conversation between Hagrid and Madame Maxime.

## If you’re just in it for the buffet... you would be Dumbledore

What separates a good party from a great party? The answer is easy: a good spread. And if anyone knows how to do food well, it’s Hogwarts. For the Yule Ball, things really stepped up a notch, with the celebration featuring enchanted plates that would conjure up any food you wished, simply by saying its name. Albus Dumbledore, a man who often professes his love for snacks, kicked off proceedings by wishing for pork chops. So, if you enjoy playing a stealth mission at parties, such as hunting down buffet items or canapés, we suspect Dumbledore would be right there with you.

## If you like to dress up... you would be Hermione

The usually frizzy-haired Hermione surprised her peers at the Yule Ball by appearing in a beautiful dress with especially sleek hair, not to mention turning up arm in arm with the Durmstrang Triwizard Champion and Quidditch ace, Viktor Krum. A party can be an opportunity to transform and simply feel good about yourself, which is precisely what Hermione did after years of stressful studying and dedication to being the top student of her year. Perhaps you love to turn heads at your parties too – and if so, good! Hermione certainly deserved the self-esteem boost after instances of being bullied by Malfoy and even Ron ‘forgetting’ she was a girl. But we especially loved that she gave herself this big glamour moment for *herself* rather than anyone else.

## If you like to make the most out of a not-great situation... you would be Parvati

Attending the Yule Ball with the Hogwarts champion (well, one of them) was obviously a huge moment for Parvati Patil, who relished the opportunity to dress up to the nines and dance in front of the whole school. Alas, Harry had asked her last minute after getting turned down by Cho – and nobody loves being the second choice. To make things worse, after an awkward dance with Harry, he immediately descended from the dance floor to be grumpy alongside Ron! No matter, though. Parvati quickly found a new dance partner – and we admired her greatly for brushing herself down after Harry ignored her.

If you are also good at overcoming setbacks and rescuing your night, then you and Parvati have that in common.

## If you love to dance the night away... you would be Neville

Some people go to parties to meet people, some go to hopefully find a bit of romance, but some people just want to dance! And Neville Longbottom was very much the latter. The usually shy and nervous Neville really came out of his shell at the Yule Ball, not returning back to his dormitory until the dying embers of the night. And good for him! Why overcomplicate things? Sometimes, all you need is to quite literally dance the night away.

## If you’re an over-sharer... you would be Hagrid

Bless lovely Hagrid. After finding a kindred spirit in Madame Maxime, Hagrid revealed that he is a half-giant to her in Hogwarts’ rose garden. Unfortunately, the way that Hagrid tells Madame Maxime this information, inferring that she must be one too, doesn’t go down too well, ending with her storming off, announcing she was not the same: just big-boned. Poor Hagrid. He really was just trying to seek a connection – and we’ve all been guilty of putting our foot in our mouth at one social occasion or another. Hagrid, we’ve all been there.

## If you don’t really like parties... you would be Harry

You know what? Parties aren’t for everyone, and that’s completely fine. For our hero, our Boy Who Lived, our Chosen One, Harry simply had too much on his plate to enjoy the extravagances of The Yule Ball, and we're not talking about the delicious dinner.

For a start, there was the ever-looming Second Task of the Triwizard Tournament to look forward to, with a mysterious egg-clue that Harry had yet to figure out. Then there was the small matter of him still not knowing how he was a Hogwarts Champion in the first place. How about the fact that his crush Cho Chang was going with the other, more legitimate Hogwarts Champion? And then there was smaller party admin to deal with, such as learning how to dance without falling on his face and contending with Ron’s seething jealousy of Hermione. Oh, and this was on top of his own jealousy for Cho and Cedric. There was just a lot going on, and it mostly just led to Harry surviving the evening with Ron – where he could find a scrap of comfort. Parties can be stressful for all sorts of reasons, so we're glad Harry had Ron by his side to navigate it with.

__The Official Harry Potter Quiz__

We know you’ve always wanted to do your Hogwarts house proud, so it’s time to put yourself to the test with this ultimate Wizarding World challenge – earning house points along the way. The Official Harry Potter Quiz Alexa Skill is available on all Alexa-enabled devices in the UK, US, Canada, India and Australia. 

The quiz uses excerpts from the Harry Potter audiobooks as the basis for the questions. It has two difficulty modes to suit all players (O.W.L. and N.E.W.T. settings, of course).

There’s a leader board and ranking, so you can compete for individual glory against players globally. Monthly tournaments give you a chance to get your house to the top of the leader board.

To get things started, simply say, ‘Alexa, play Harry Potter quiz’ to any Alexa-enabled device, including the Echo, Echo Show, Echo Dot and Echo Spot. __Quidditch Through the Ages: Highlights__

## Last place: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

If camping out in the freezing cold is not your idea of a relaxing Christmas break, you’ll probably understand Harry’s final Christmas in the series being bottom of our ranking. Alone with Hermione after Ron had left the trio after a huge row, the pair ended up spending Christmas Eve being attacked by Nagini disguised as Bathilda Bagshot at Godric’s Hollow. Seeing the graves of his parents for the first time earlier in the evening was literally cold comfort. In fact, they didn’t even notice it was Christmas time until Hermione noticed the lights of the neighbouring village. Things improved a bit when Ron returned and saved Harry’s life by destroying the locket Horcrux after Harry ventured into a freezing pool to attempt to retrieve the sword of Gryffindor.

## Sixth place: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

In Order of the Phoenix, Harry finds himself in the strange situation of visiting Arthur Weasley at St Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies during the Christmas period. After seeing Arthur attacked by Nagini at the Department of Mysteries in a ‘dream’, it is Harry that sounds the alarm to Dumbledore, leading to Arthur’s rescue before it is too late. While Arthur recovered, Harry spent a lot of time back at Grimmauld Place hiding away because he was worried he was possessed by Voldemort. Hermione eventually coaxed him out and Ginny was able to convince him he wasn’t, despite his vision of Nagini coming to him from the snake’s point of view. Worries about possession don’t make for a happy Christmas.

## Fifth place: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

On the plus side, Harry’s second year saw him spend Christmas at Hogwarts with Ron and Hermione. But it was a little fraught. Hermione finished brewing up some Polyjuice Potion on Christmas Day itself. She might have preferred another tipple, because she accidentally added a cat hair to the mix, transforming herself partially into a cat rather than Millicent Bulstrode. Harry and Ron did better, disguising themselves as Goyle and Crabbe in order to gain access to the Slytherin common room and quiz Malfoy about whether he was the Heir of Slytherin opening the Chamber of Secrets. It turned out he wasn’t. It was probably worth it – but Hermione had to spend the rest of the holidays in the hospital wing.

## Fourth place: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

You’d think Christmas at the Burrow with Lupin and the Weasleys would be great. Well, it was, until Percy turned up with Minister of Magic, Rufus Scrimgour, on Christmas Day itself. Giving them short shrift, Harry was then able to focus on his present from Kreacher: a parcel full of maggots! Still, it wasn’t as bad as the ‘My Sweetheart’ necklace that Ron received from Lavender Brown.

## Third place: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

The most extraordinary Christmas at Hogwarts saw the holding of the Yule Ball during the Triwizard Tournament. A lavish and loved-up affair where the students could bring dates to the dance, there was a lot of tension simmering under the surface. Harry attended with Parvati Patil, but would have preferred to go with Cho Chang, who instead went with Hufflepuff champion Cedric Diggory. Hermione linked arms with Durmstrung Champion and Quidditch superstar Victor Krum, filling Ron with jealousy (there with Padma Patil – the ball was hard on the Patils) which culminated in a row between the friends. Worst of all, Harry overheard a conversation between Snape and headmaster of Durmstrang Igor Karkaroff, where the latter said that his Dark Mark was burning – a sign of Voldemort’s growing power. This Christmas event presaged the tragedy to come at the Tournament’s conclusion…

## Second place: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Once again joined by Ron and Hermione, on Harry’s third Christmas at Hogwarts he received an excellent gift: the Firebolt. Hermione suspected it was from Sirius Black, at that point the notorious escapee of Azkaban, and she notified Professor McGonagall. Nothing like receiving a pressie and not being able to play with it!

## First place: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

After a lifetime of Christmases at the Dursleys, it’s not surprising that Harry chose to spend Christmas at Hogwarts during his first year. It was a lot of fun, mainly because all the Weasley boys also stayed. The snowbound japes included Fred and George pelting Professor Quirrell with snow balls. But this Christmas was also tainted with personal pain. After he received the Cloak of Invisibility from Dumbledore, Harry whiled away this sleepiest part of the year exploring the nooks and crannies of Hogwarts. It was then he came upon the Mirror of Erised and a glimpse of his deceased parents: a bittersweet tang of long-lost affection in an otherwise cosy festive sea

## Step One

Cut around all the templates on coloured card – each piece specifies what colour card it should be cut out on. Take your time with the scissors, especially when cutting around the two melting wax templates.

## Step Two

Take the large Candle Base piece and roll into a tube until the two sides meet and secure with glue. Fold over the two attached flaps inwards in the base. Then take the Circle Base (without the hole) and glue this to the folds. This will form the base of your candle.

## Step Three

Take the Large Melted Wax piece and glue this around the top of the candle, folding the flaps inside the top of the candle, similarly to how you did this in Step Two.

## Step Four

Assemble the flame by taking one ‘Large Flame’ piece, one ‘Medium Flame’ piece and one ‘Wick’ piece. Hold all pieces together so the bases are lined up and glue together. Once secured, fold them in half lengthways so there is a curve in the card.

Repeat this three times, using up all the pieces. Once all are dry, glue all three flames together by securing the edges of the large flames, to form a 3D flame. This is a little bit fiddly so take your time. 

## Step Five

Take the Circle Top piece and place the bottom of the flame through the middle hole. Secure the flame by sticking the bottom of the flame to the base side of the circle so the flame doesn’t fall out of the hole. Then glue the base of the circle to the flaps you folded over in step three at the top of the candle.

## Step Six

Wrap the Small Melted Wax template around the top of the candle and secure with glue to complete the design.

## Step Seven

Hook some cotton thread or fishing line underneath part of the melted wax layers and hang your candle up at home. For the best effect make multiple candles that look like they are floating together. You can hang these from the ceiling, in your windows or even on your tree.

## Step Eight

To personalise your candle, get creative with layering some eco-friendly glitter on the melting candle wax. Or swap out the colours of card to make candles in your House colours, to bring the magic of Hogwarts into your home.
