## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

Make reading Harry Potter fun with these three easy tips

Children deserve reading experiences that resonate with their joyful spirits, and their desire to explore and play. These three activities will help.

## 1.	Read aloud, read aloud, read aloud

To help children become super readers, one persistent theme is the power and fun of the read aloud. It's a simple, yet transformative act that brings families together and helps kids learn thoughtfully.

Make the read aloud a daily experience for kids, and use best practices to keep them engaged. Before even opening the book, look at the cover – the Harry Potter books have magical illustrations – and make predictions together on what the book is about. 

As you read, stop to ask your child questions about the text – what shape is the scar on Harry’s forehead? Who is their favourite character so far? Which shops would they like to visit in Diagon Alley? Read with enthusiasm and expression by making silly voices, faces, and gestures to bring the text to life. Don’t be shy — the more dramatic the better!

Also remember that reading aloud is for kids of ALL ages. So, start early and don’t stop!

## 2.	Incorporate art

Setting up an art station during read-aloud time is just one way to combine reading and writing with creative expression through art. Bring out the crayons, coloured pencils, construction paper and all varieties of art supplies, and have a child design their own cover for a book they love!

Beyond the traditional read aloud, stories can come from a variety of sources, including poems, oral tales, and wordless books! Technology can also be a great outlet – think about ebooks or audiobooks. 

Think outside of the box when it comes to reading and watch your child light up with excitement. Making reading fun fosters a love of reading and captivating our kids with great stories is where true magic lies.

Into the Pensieve: Do you remember Silvanus Kettleburn?

## Who was Silvanus Kettleburn?
Silvanus Kettleburn – or Professor Kettleburn to his students – was the Care of Magical Creatures teacher at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, before he retired and was replaced by Rubeus Hagrid in Harry’s third year. Professor Kettleburn might not have appeared in the Pensieve – after which this article series is named – but you may need to take a second look at your memories to remember reading about him. 

## When did we meet him?
Well, we have to admit – we didn’t actually meet him! Dumbledore mentioned him in his start-of-term speech in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: ‘I am sorry to tell you that Professor Kettleburn, our Care of Magical Creatures teacher, retired at the end of last year in order to enjoy more time with his remaining limbs.’

## How do we know anything about him at all?
You’re probably thinking that this is going to be a very short article if all we know is that Silvanus Kettleburn retired and had some nasty run-ins with magical creatures. However – just like Dumbledore collected memories to share with Harry in the Pensieve – we’ve done a little investigating of our own, and found some information on the Hogwarts teacher, shared with us by J.K. Rowling herself.

## What was he like?
Son of a magical father and a magical mother, Silvanus Kettleburn was sorted into Hufflepuff house on his arrival at Hogwarts. According to J.K. Rowling, he was ‘an enthusiastic and occasionally reckless man whose great love of the often dangerous creatures he studied and looked after led to serious injuries to himself and, occasionally, others’. Also, ‘he was prone to underestimating the risks involved in caring for creatures such as Occamys, Grindylows and Fire Crabs’ – sounds like another Care of Magical Creatures teacher we know and love, doesn’t it? Professor Kettleburn was, it seems, a loveable eccentric. 

## What was unusual about him?
The first unusual thing about Silvanus was his wand – chestnut, eleven-and-a-half inches, whippy, with a phoenix feather core. The phoenix feather is the rarest of all core types – interestingly Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort also shared this core – you can [read more about wands here](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/what-does-your-wand-mean "Wand article").
It also seems that Silvanus wasn’t very good at learning from his magical creature-related mistakes. Apparently, he had ‘no fewer than sixty-two periods of probation during his time of employment at the school (a record that still stands)’. Also, J.K. Rowling tell us that he ‘once famously caused the Great Hall to catch fire after enchanting an Ashwinder to play the Worm in a play of “The Fountain of Fair Fortune.”’ ‘The Fountain of Fair Fortune’ is a story written by Beedle the Bard and appears in his tales – if you’d like to find out more about it, [here’s an article for you](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/web-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-tales-of-beedle-the-bard "Beedle the Bard - everything to know"). 

By the end of his career at Hogwarts, Silvanus only had one arm and half a leg due, we assume, to the injuries caused to him by the magical creatures he’d worked with all his life. On his retirement however, Albus Dumbledore came to the rescue and ‘presented him with a full set of enchanted wooden limbs’. How thoughtful!

## What did he do after retiring from Hogwarts?
Silvanus retired to Hogsmeade, and we can understand why – imagine being able to visit the Three Broomsticks and Zonko’s Joke Shop every day? And it had a great owl post office so you could keep in touch with all your friends! Inadvisably, despite his wooden limbs, Silvanus still continued to visit dragon sanctuaries in his spare time, which meant that his wooden prosthetics were frequently set on fire and had to be replaced regularly. 

## Why did he matter?
Professor Kettleburn had a fearlessness and encyclopaedic knowledge of magical creatures that no doubt inspired many a young witch or wizard to continue studying beasts – maybe even to become Magizoologists. And the fact that he had sixty-two periods of probation, yet was still allowed to teach at Hogwarts, according to J.K. Rowling, ‘was evidence of the great affection in which staff and students held him.’ He was clearly a hero to many.

Heroism comes in all shapes, sizes and varieties, and after he retired, J.K. Rowling shared with us one specific act of Kettleburn’s heroism. Silvanus was retired and living in Hogsmeade by the time the Battle of Hogwarts came around, and he was unable to join the effort against Lord Voldemort and his forces due to the state of his limbs. However, ‘determined to play his part, he clambered into his attic and threw his entire stock of Flobberworms out of the skylight at passing Death Eaters. While this may not have had much effect on the outcome of the battle, it was generally felt to show the right spirit.’ Some wisdom here: ‘You don’t have to be a sword-wielding Gryffindor to be a hero; sometimes, all it takes is having your heart in the right place’.

## Why might we have forgotten him?
You’d be forgiven for forgetting about Silvanus Kettleburn, even more readily than Bob Ogden slipping your mind. Mentioned in the Harry Potter books only twice, knowledge of this fearless Care of Magical Creatures is certainly something to show off about.

## Make a den 

Entering the wizarding world for the first time is a pretty big deal, so make sure you’re cosy once those Hogwarts doors open. We thoroughly recommend making a den – or a blanket fort – whatever you may call it. Get every cushion in the house, prop a duvet up to create a little tent – get creative! Just make sure to ask your parent or guardian before stealing every cosy thing in the house!

## Get some good snacks in  

Learning about wizards is hungry work – and once you get introduced to the amazing Hogwarts feast – you’re guaranteed to get a bit peckish yourself! So, have a handy snack-horde nearby. Harry’s favourite is treacle tart – what’s yours? Maybe you could even try an eat-a-long. Got any corned-beef sandwiches in, by any chance? That’s usually what Ron is (reluctantly) eating...

## Make sure the lighting is good

Reading in the dark might give you a bit of a headache, so make sure you’ve got a lot of lighting, especially if you have made a den. Sadly, we cannot cast Lumos with our wands, so try torches and lamps to create a Hogwarts-like atmosphere! 

## Pick your favourite Harry Potter book 

Merlin’s beard, there are just so many Harry Potter books to choose from! Maybe you’re reading someone else’s tattered old copy of the first book, or maybe you’re lucky enough to have one of the new shiny illustrated versions? Whichever Harry Potter book is your favourite, and in whatever form, the wizarding world is always just a page turn away.

Say hello to James and Oliver Phelps, the real-life twins who played the troublesome Fred and George Weasley respectively. Find out how much the pair have in common, as we quiz them on all things wizarding. Do they have the same Hogwarts house? What’s their favourite moment on set? What would their Boggarts be?

## First thing’s first: what is your Hogwarts house?

__James:__ Hufflepuff... which is cool, but even cooler as I actually have a badger living under my shed!<br>
__Oliver:__ I was put into Gryffindor, which I was very happy with. It helps when you already have the uniform!

## Which Wizarding World character do you most relate to? It doesn’t have to be your character! 

__James:__ I’ve got to say Fred. Even before getting the role I had a great connection with him, being a twin was a start!<br>
__Oliver:__ I’m not just saying it to be lazy but honestly, I think that George is the most relatable for me. He’s an identical twin, he likes to have a joke and he doesn’t shy away from standing up for what he sees as right. 

## What’s your first Wizarding World memory?

__Oliver:__ Our first memory would be being on holiday with some family friends in 1998. The boys who were away with us were really excited because their auntie picked up a new book at the airport. We remember thinking, ‘How can a book get people this excited?’ I’d never seen a reaction like this before. I read the first book, then this new book they had. It was *Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets*. 

## What’s your favourite Wizarding World memory?

__James:__ The Wizarding World has given me such great memories, but the final premiere in London for *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2* was like nothing I will ever see again. London was literally at a standstill. <br>
__Oliver:__ Talking to my Grandad about the Marauder’s Map scene. He always said it would be an important scene for us to be part of. Unfortunately, he passed away before the film was finished but calling him the day we filmed it and telling him about it will always stay with me.

## If you could have one spell, or one type of magic, that you were able to use in your day-to-day life, what would you pick?

__James:__ ‘*Lumos*’ –  if you ever wake up in the middle of the night and can’t find the light switch, this would come in handy!<br>
__Oliver:__ Right now, it would be a kind of Portkey. Using an object to take me anywhere would be very useful right now.

## What would be your Wizarding World pet?

__James:__ Pygmy Puff. It would go everywhere with me!<br>
__Oliver:__ Although they may be a handful, I’d love to have a Niffler in the house.

## Pick a Deathly Hallow: The Invisibility Cloak, The Resurrection Stone or the Elder Wand? And say why.

__James:__ Invisibility Cloak. You can get anywhere with it.<br>
__Oliver:__ Invisibility Cloak. You could get away with never having to wait in line or get tickets to an event again! You could even watch your favourite band from the stage and nobody would ever know.

## What’s your favourite Harry Potter book and film?

__James:__ *Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire* for film, but *Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban* was the book I was reading when I learned I had got the part in the films. Even now when I smell that book smell (you know the one) it reminds me of it.<br>
__Oliver:__ *Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire* – for both.

## Apart from Harry Potter, what other books/films do you like?

__James:__ For books, the Cicero Trilogy by Robert Harris; for films, anything from the *Rocky* series.<br>
__Oliver:__ As film series go, *Rocky* as well. I’ve watched those in a marathon session before. As for books, Lee Childs’ Jack Reacher series is so captivating. 

## Which two people would you ask to help you defeat Lord Voldemort?

__James:__ Harry Potter (he’s got a good history against him) and David Beckham (I imagine even Voldemort would be a little starstruck by him!)<br>
__Oliver:__ Tyson Fury and Queen Elizabeth II. 

## What would your Boggart be?

__James:__ Getting a puncture on my road bike - 100km from home, in the rain, without a puncture kit. <br>
__Oliver:__ A giant rat.  

## Which Wizarding World moment made you cry/emotional?

__Oliver:__ The premiere we attended in Oslo for *Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince*. It was all outdoors and a very special setting. Thinking about it now still gives me goosebumps. <br> 
__James:__ Once, Oliver’s eyebrows were burnt off accidentally when they were meant to be dyed ginger. I cried with laughter for about a week.
