__*Spoiler warning! Watch where you tread, there are some spoilers ahead – turn back now if you’re not familiar with the books…*__

## Firstly, who were the Dursleys?

The Dursleys were a [Muggle](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) family who took an extraordinary amount of pride in their ordinariness – [Vernon Dursley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/vernon-dursley) even had a moustache comb. If that wasn’t monumentally mundane enough, they lived in an extremely ordinary house on a totally normal street – [number four, Privet Drive](/fact-file/locations/number-four-privet-drive).  

[Petunia](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/petunia-dursley) was Harry’s aunt and the only sister of his mother, [Lily](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lily-potter) – their similarities ended at their floral names. Where Lily was kind-spirited and welcoming, Petunia was mean and narrow-minded. 

Her husband, Vernon, was a director of the drill-making firm, Grunnings. A respectable job to match his respectable car and respectable family. Having a witch for a sister-in-law? Not respectable. 

Together, they had their son and apple-of-their-eye – Diddykins (otherwise known as [Dudley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/dudley-dursley)). Some would call Dudley boisterous while most others would call him a spoilt bully.  

We also had the unfortunate honour of meeting Vernon’s sister, [Marge](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/marge-dursley), but the less said about the incident which was… blown completely out of proportion, the better. 

By the time Harry arrived on their doorstep, Vernon and Petunia Dursley were not close with Lily and [James](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/james-potter) Potter. Actually, after a disastrous dinner at a restaurant, Petunia not having Lily as one of her bridesmaids, and Vernon referring to James as an ‘amateur magician’, they weren’t on speaking terms.

## Ok, but why were they so horrible to Harry? 

With an introduction like that, it’ll come as no surprise to learn that the Dursleys were very prejudiced people. Anything that they didn’t understand, they feared – including magic. Something that unusual couldn’t be good and that included Harry. 

There is one other reason to consider here – jealousy. Did you know that Petunia had wanted to be a witch too? She had even written to [Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) as a child to ask if she could go to [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts). Although he let her down gently, Petunia’s resentment towards her sister and magic continued to grow. Eventually, magic was no longer the thing she most wanted, it was the thing she most despised.  

Harry was a living, breathing reminder of Petunia’s pain and a threat to the carefully curated image of her family. There would be no greater disaster than if the neighbours found out who Harry truly was – how could they bear the scandal!

## Surely, they had other family who could take Harry in?

Well, with that history, leaving your only son to live with the sister who threw his birth announcement in the bin is… not ideal. But, when [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) murdered Lily and James Potter, there wasn’t another choice. Lily didn’t have any other living family.

On James’ part, his parents Fleamont (the creator of [Sleekeazy’s Hair Potion](/fact-file/plants-and-potions/sleekeazys-hair-potion)) and Euphemia, had passed away. Born after Fleamont had retired, James was their only son – a wonderful surprise after they had given up any hope of having a child. Although they lived long enough to see him get married, Dragon Pox claimed them both before they met their grandson.

## Or literally anyone else?

Outside of their blood relations, the people that were closest to the [Potters](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-potters) were not in any position to take Harry in. The [Marauders](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/marauders) had broken apart completely – [Peter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/peter-pettigrew) was thought to be dead, [Sirius](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sirius-black) was locked up for Peter’s murder and [Lupin](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/remus-lupin) had retreated to the outskirts of society. 

Plus, while we’re sure that lots of wizarding families would have jumped at the opportunity to take in and raise the Boy-Who-Lived, Dumbledore thought that there might be a deeper magic at play – making this impossible.

## Couldn’t he live somewhere else once he knew he was a wizard? 

It’s true that Harry felt more at home at Hogwarts than he ever had at the Dursleys. He was no longer the lonely little boy in the cupboard-under-the-stairs – and not just because everybody here knew who he was. He had finally found his people – from his best friends to his godfather and everybody else who was there for him. 

Except, none of them were related to him by blood. More specifically, none of these people shared his mother’s blood. This is the crucial point. Even if James’ family had been alive, Harry couldn’t have stayed with them – and it all goes back to the [prophecy](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/sybill-trelawneys-first-prophecy). 

When [Professor Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) spoke of the one person who could vanquish the Dark Lord, Voldemort believed that meant Harry Potter. Determined to eliminate any threat to his power, he decided that the Potter family must be killed. 

Surprisingly, one of his most loyal [Death Eaters](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/death-eaters), [Severus Snape](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/severus-snape), asked him to spare the life of Lily Potter. So, when Voldemort arrived on that Hallowe’en night in [Godric’s Hollow](/fact-file/locations/godrics-hollow), he gave Lily a choice. If she stepped aside and allowed him to kill Harry, he would let her live. She refused. He murdered her to get to her son. 

Except, Voldemort did not know that Lily’s sacrifice had unlocked an ancient magic. When she gave up her life to protect Harry, that protection lingered – flowing through his veins and making it impossible for Voldemort to touch him.  

Suspecting this, Dumbledore took Harry to live with the only other person to share Lily’s blood, Petunia. Despite being incredibly reluctant, bitter and furious (amongst other things), Petunia brought Harry into her home, sealing the Charm Dumbledore had placed – the bond of blood being the strongest shield he could give him.  

As Dumbledore explained in a letter to Petunia, while Harry could refer to the place where his mother’s blood still dwells as home, Voldemort could not harm him. Even if he only returned once a year. Even if it was miserable for him there. Even if the Dursleys resented him. As long as number four, Privet Drive was his home, the magic would continue to work. Harry would be protected, and Lily’s love and sacrifice would be honoured.

With so many wonderful personalities reflected in nearly 150 possible Patronuses, some animal guardians are more common than others. Out of them all, these were the 10 rarest – can you spot your unusual Patronus on this list? 

## 10th: Lion and 9th: Lioness – Roarsome Royalty

You probably won’t be surprised to hear that the lion is not one of the 10 rarest Patronuses in [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor). Although, you might be surprised that's also the case for [Slytherin](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/slytherin). It creeps into the [Ravenclaw](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/ravenclaw) list at number 10 and is the eighth rarest Patronus in [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff). 

Interestingly, the lioness is a slightly different story. It is not on the Ravenclaw or Slytherin list, but it is the eighth rarest for Gryffindor and seventh for Hufflepuff.  

## 8th: Abraxan Winged Horse – Proud and Powerful

__*The Abraxan is a breed of magical winged horse, one of a few types in the wizarding world. This particular type pulls the Beauxbatons school carriage, so they are suitably majestic looking and even drink whisky.*__ 

While this powerful protector is eighth overall, it is not quite as uncommon in Gryffindor and Slytherin – taking 10th and ninth place. You are even more likely to find a Hufflepuff with this Patronus as it doesn’t make it into their rarest top 10. However, at number five, you will find less Ravenclaws are drawn to this Patronus.  

## 7th: Seal – Fearlessly Theatrical

__*They might be more clumsy than graceful when stuck on land, but when a seal is in the water? That’s a different story. Seals glide, twirl and dive through water with ease. As a Patronus, a seal could use its splashy skills to dazzle anybody.*__ 

At number 13 for Slytherin, the seal isn’t on their list of rarest Patronuses. However, in sixth, fourth and third place, that isn’t the same for Ravenclaw, Gryffindor and Hufflepuff. 

## 6th: Tiger and 5th: Tigress – Wild Majesty

While this big cat is not one of the 10 most uncommon Patronuses in Hufflepuff, it is the third rarest in Slytherin. You’ll find a few more tigers in Gryffindor and Ravenclaw – taking seventh and ninth place. 

This is similar for the tigress. Again, it is not on the Hufflepuff list but is the rarest Slytherin Patronus. Pretty uncommon for Gryffindor and Ravenclaw, it makes their top 10 in sixth and eighth position. 

## 4th: Albatross – Dynamic and Free

You will find this seafaring bird on every house’s list. It just makes the cut in Hufflepuff as their 10th rarest. Yet, you will find slightly less of them in the other three – seventh place for Ravenclaw, sixth for Slytherin and fifth for Gryffindor.  

## 3rd: Impala – Lithe Leaper

At number three, Gryffindor and Ravenclaw mirror the overall ranking of rarest Patronuses. You’ll find a handful more impalas in Slytherin and Hufflepuff, as they take fourth and sixth place. 

## 2nd: Vulture – Poise and Patience

There aren't many Gryffindors with this dignified Patronus – it happens to be their rarest form. In line with the overall ranking, it is number two for Ravenclaw but fifth for Hufflepuff and Slytherin.  

## 1st: Erumpent – Epic and Thunderous

__*The Erumpent is a large magical creature that can be mistaken for a Muggle rhino. With skin that repels most spells and a horn that has a habit of exploding, your Patronus is particularly unique – Newt Scamander would be impressed!*__ 

The larger-than-life Erumpent might take the top spot on the overall rank of rarest Patronuses but not when it comes to the houses. In second place, it just misses the top spot for Gryffindor and Slytherin. It only just makes it into the Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw top 10 at number nine.

## What about the Hogwarts houses? 

As both your house and your Patronus reflect your personality, we’re not surprised to see that different houses find themselves drawn to different animals.  

This is certainly the case when it comes to the 10 rarest Patronuses. From their rankings to what form they take – each house has their own distinct list. 

So, which house is not such a fan of the Runespoor? Let’s see…

# Hufflepuff  

## 4th: Leopard and 2nd: Leopardess – Fierce and Fast

These speedy cats are right near the top of the Hufflepuff list, with the leopard in fourth place and the leopardess in second. Curiously, it does not make any other top 10. Both the leopard and leopardess sit outside the 20 rarest Slytherin Patronuses in 22nd and 23rd place. The leopard is the 11th and 14th rarest for Gryffindor and Ravenclaw while the leopardess is 12th for Gryffindor and 13th for Ravenclaw. 

## 1st: Shark – A Dominant Force

This mighty Patronus isn’t just slightly unusual for Hufflepuff – it swims into the top spot as their rarest.  

# Gryffindor 

## 9th: Shark – A Dominant Force 

One of the rarer Gryffindor Patronuses, this toothsome creature takes ninth place. At number 12, you will see a few more in Ravenclaw and more again in Slytherin, as it’s their 21st rarest. 

# Slytherin 

## 10th: Elephant – Majestic and Memorable

You won’t find the elephant in the Gryffindor top 10 – it's their 16th rarest Patronus. The same goes for Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw where it takes 19th place.

## 8th: Cheetah – Stealthy and Speedy

This ferociously fast cat just breaks into the top 20 unusual Patronuses for Gryffindor and Hufflepuff. It is slightly rarer in Ravenclaw at number 17. 

## 7th: Python – Unyielding and Powerful

__*This is one of the largest snakes in the world: it lurks in the shadows, calculating its moves before launching on prey. As a key regulator of the ecosystem, the giant python teaches us that even scary-looking beings can be a force for good.*__ 

We were quite shocked to see a snake on the list of unusual Patronuses for Slytherin. Intriguingly, it is more popular in the other houses. It is the 18th rarest for Gryffindor and Hufflepuff and 15th for Ravenclaw. 

# Ravenclaw  

## 7th: Runespoor – Triple Threat

__*Three heads are better than one, as this magical snake proves. Each head has a role: the planner, the dreamer and the critic. As a Patronus, it reflects your canny ability to adapt your thinking to help any situation, such as fending off Dementors.*__ 

For a house that is all about the mind, it is funny to see that this three-headed snake is their seventh rarest Patronus. It is only slightly more common in Gryffindor and Hufflepuff in 14th and 12th place. Interestingly, it is only the 30th rarest Patronus for Slytherin.

## Did you know? 

In the wizarding world, Patronuses that take the form of magical creatures are considered extremely rare… but is that the same in our Muggle world?  

With a few as possible outcomes for your own Patronus, we thought it would be interesting to look at a handful of these magical creatures and just how popular they are. 

## Dragon – Ferociously Fiery

__*Possibly the most famous of magical creatures, but interestingly one of the rarest Patronuses in the wizarding world, dragons are deadly yet awe-inspiring and hold the most dangerous Ministry classification. Do not be afraid of these remarkable Patronuses – be...fired up!*__ 

Probably the first magical creature to spring to mind, this fiery friend is nowhere near the top of the rarest Patronus list for Slytherin – it’s only 113th! It is middle-of-the-road for Gryffindor and Ravenclaw in 73rd and 43rd place and far more uncommon in Hufflepuff in 25th position.  

## Unicorn – Rare and Mysterious

__*This grand, mythological beast has been a mainstay in folklore for centuries. Yet, they like to avoid human contact – fitting for a Patronus that is exceedingly rare in the magical world. A Patronus as mystical as it is impressive.*__ 

This beautiful Patronus is one of the less common Patronuses found among the houses – it even breaks into the Slytherin top 20. In 26th place, it is not quite as unusual to see this form in Gryffindor and Ravenclaw. It sits at number 27 for Hufflepuff.

## Thestral – All-Seeing and All-Knowing

__*This black, skeletal winged horse is a unique breed that cannot be seen by all. Fittingly, it happens to be one of the rarest Patronuses in the wizarding world. Intelligent and loyal, this Patronus proves you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.*__ 

You are likely to find quite a few Thestral Patronuses among the Slytherins – it is only the 94th most uncommon. In 49th, 44th and 37th place there are not as many in Ravenclaw, Gryffindor and Hufflepuff.

## Dr Filibuster’s Fabulous, Wet-Start, No-Heat Fireworks

We all remember these magical fireworks due to Fred and George’s love of them: fireworks that never seem to stop exploding – or at least on one occasion for ‘at least half an hour’. 

It wasn’t until a long while later that we realised that a ‘filibuster’ is a political tactic, where a speaker delivers a time-wasting speech that doesn’t feel like it’s ever going to end. These ceaseless fireworks were made by one ‘Dr Filibuster’ – coincidence? 

## Roonil Wazlib 

We’ve all had our names misspelt before, right? Forms, coffee cups, birthday cards... but maybe not quite as dramatic as the great Roonil Wazlib.

Thanks to one of Fred and George’s [useful joke shop products](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/locations/weasleys-wizard-wheezes), a Spell-Checking quill with its charm wearing off, Ron inadvertently created the best nickname ever. Although it positively ruined one of Ron’s essays, it did later come in handy for Harry, pretending he was the great Roonil Wazlib to avoid a textbook faux pas with Snape. 

‘This is the copy of Advanced Potion-Making that you purchased from Flourish and Blotts?’ 

‘Yes,’ said Harry firmly. 

‘Then why,’ asked Snape, ‘does it have the name “Roonil Wazlib” written inside the front cover?’ 

Harry’s heart missed a beat. 

‘That’s my nickname,’ he said.

Happily, Roonil Wazlib had a shelf life outside of the Harry Potter books – with the iconic monicker becoming a meme amongst the fans forever more. Long live Roonil!  

## Professor Binns never getting anyone’s name right  

The novelty of having a ghost teach a Hogwarts subject quickly wore off for Harry and his school-friends, after discovering Professor Binns’ [History of Magic](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/magical-miscellany/history-of-magic) classes were not exactly stimulating, Perhaps the only interesting thing about them is that Binns never got anyone’s names right at all – you can find multiple examples of this across the books. 

‘But, sir,’ said Seamus Finnigan, ‘if the Chamber can only be opened by Slytherin’s true heir, no one else would be able to find it, would they?’ 

‘Nonsense, O’Flaherty,’ said Professor Binns in an aggravated tone. ‘If a long succession of Hogwarts headmasters and headmistresses haven’t found the thing –’ 

‘But, Professor,’ piped up Parvati Patil, ‘you’d probably have to use Dark Magic to open it –’ 

‘Just because a wizard doesn’t use Dark Magic, doesn’t mean he can’t, Miss Pennyfeather,’ snapped Professor Binns.

In Binns’ defence, he is still working despite being dead, so you can maybe forgive him for not being entirely on his A-game.  

## Merlin’s many... things

For reasons only wizards and witches may know, it has become common parlance in the wizarding world to use “Merlin’s..." as an exclamation. Perhaps a nod to some of our idiosyncratic British phrases, such as Flaming Nora and Gordon Bennett. (Look them up, seriously.)

Usually, when shocked or surprised by something, a witch or wizard may opt for a nice, innocent, “Merlin’s beard”. But we have seen more upscaled versions. Never forget Hermione’s controversial, “Merlin’s pants!” - could it ever get more scandalous than that? 

Well, yes.  

‘We are holding your brother’s wedding here in a few days’ time, young man –’ 

‘And are they getting married in my bedroom?’ asked Ron furiously. ‘No! So why in the name of Merlin’s saggy left –’

## Weatherby! 

It feels only apt that the Weasley family have infiltrated many of the moments on this list. But now, here’s one from an unlikely source: poor Percy. 

‘Oh,’ said Mr Crouch, looking over at Percy in mild surprise. 

‘Yes – thank you, Weatherby.’ 

Fred and George choked into their own cups. Percy, very pink around the ears, busied himself with the kettle.

Determined to impress his boss at the Ministry, Percy was instead left to reconcile with the fact Mr Crouch barely knew his name, earning him the new one of Weatherby. And it wasn’t just one time. For the entire of *Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire*, Percy is called Weatherby at every opportune moment – and of course, Fred and George are only happy to join in.

Okay, one more Weasley submission for the road. The Weasley twins, of course, [were no strangers to a good laugh](https://www.harrypotter.com/features/debate-club-who-was-funnier-fred-or-george-weasley) – but we particularly enjoyed this more subtle endeavour of theirs – a strange dedication to toilet seats. 

In the first instance we meet them, Fred and George console their weeping sister Ginny by saying they’ll send her a Hogwarts toilet seat as they part ways. But this isn’t the only time the Weasley twins employ toilet seats as an off-piste replacement for a greeting card. When Harry wakes up in the hospital wing at the end of *Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone*...

He was lying in a bed with white line sheets and next to him was a table piled high with what looked like half the sweet-shop. 
‘Tokens from your friends and admirers,’ said Dumbledore, beaming. ‘What happened down in the dungeons between you and Professor Quirrell is a complete secret, so, naturally, the whole school knows. I believe your friends Misters Fred and George Weasley were responsible for trying to send you a lavatory seat. No doubt they thought it would amuse you. Madam Pomfrey, however, felt it might not be very hygienic, and confiscated it.’

*Spoiler warning! Even though we’re dipping into the past – we may also drift into some key Harry Potter plot points in his present! Tread carefully.*  

## The House founders

As well as, you know, pretty much inventing Hogwarts itself, Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff and Salazar Slytherin also taught there. (It was probably hard to head-hunt back in the tenth century...) We’re not sure exactly how they divvied up teaching responsibilities, but we can make a few educated guesses. 

With Godric Gryffindor’s duelling prowess, it’s likely he would’ve passed on these skills to his students – and was known to focus on teaching ‘the bravest and the boldest’. Helga Hufflepuff was a lot more open-minded, promising to teach ‘the lot’ and had a particular talent with Charms. With her all-encompassing wisdom, Rowena Ravenclaw’s students were known to be highly intelligent, while Salazar Slytherin was too busy only teaching students ‘whose ancestry is purest’ ... 

Not the best way to operate a school, but thankfully specific classes and teachers with the right expertise would soon follow! 

## Armando Dippet  

Before Albus Dumbledore, there was Armando Dippet: often described as a ‘frail-looking wizard’ who had his fair share of challenges as Hogwarts Headmaster too. 

The most notable thing to know about Dippet was his misjudged fondness of a particular student called – yes, you guessed it – Tom Riddle. During Dippet’s tenure, Riddle opened the Chamber of Secrets (an event which Dippet then tried to cover up) never realising it was, in fact, the young Lord Voldemort who did the deed in the first place.  

Dippet and Riddle even became somewhat friendly, with Riddle asking the Headmaster if he could have a job at the school after he graduated. Thankfully, for the students of Hogwarts, a suspicious Dumbledore (who worked at Hogwarts as a professor at the time) persuaded Dippet against the appointment. 

So, although Dippet was nowhere near as bad a Headmaster as, say, Dolores Umbridge, he seemed to lack the vigilance that his famous successor had in abundance. Perhaps this wizard’s reputation can be best summed up by Rita Skeeter’s best-selling book on the man, Armando Dippet: Master or Moron? 

## Herbert Beery  

The then-Herbology professor before Pomona Sprout’s time, Professor Herbert Beery didn’t just love magical flora and fauna, but also amateur dramatics. Thanks to Herbert, Hogwarts put on their ‘sole attempt’ at a Christmas pantomime with him in charge – taking on the story of The Fountain of Fair Fortune from The Tales of Beedle the Bard.  

Suffice it to say, due to a comedy of errors, the production ended up creating a fiery inferno in The Great Hall, ending with a packed Hospital Wing and a vow from the Headmaster, Professor Dippet, to never put on another pantomime again. Maybe Herbert should’ve stuck to Bubotubers.  

## Phineas Nigellus Black

Like most of Sirius Black’s ancestors, Phineas Nigellus wasn’t a particularly nice fellow. In fact, he was known as one of the most unpopular Hogwarts Headmasters of all time. Of course, we had the misfortune of meeting Phineas in Harry’s story, albeit as a grumpy, sardonic portrait.  

But in his days actually in charge of Hogwarts (which Hogwarts Legacy players know all too well!) Professor Black was even more dastardly than the painted version, exhibiting the same Pure-Blood fanatical views as many of his other family members. But his greatest crime? A lot of Hogwarts students would probably say banning Quidditch for a whole year... 

## Dilys Derwent  

Another character we meet in Dumbledore’s office as a portrait, Dilys Derwent was a Healer at St Mungo’s Hospital, and soon went on to become Headmistress at Hogwarts in the 1700s – quite the double whammy. 

During the attack of Arthur Weasley in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Dumbledore asks for help from two of Hogwarts’ most ‘celebrated Heads’, with Dilys being one, alongside a fellow Headmaster named Everard. Even as portraits, the two professors are able to help the cause; due to their high statuses in life, they have other portraits hanging in various esteemed establishments, able to pass from one to another to help find Arthur.  

## Special shoutouts 

A couple of Hogwarts professors of yesteryear did bleed into Harry’s present, but we’re sure they had many more stories to tell. Of course, Professor Binns has been at Hogwarts so long he did actually used to be alive at one point... while Professor Slughorn originally taught at Hogwarts during Tom Riddle’s era, famously telling him about Horcruxes: whoops. Then there’s Silvanus Kettleburn, who left the post of Care of Magical Creatures professor to make way for Hagrid – and to ‘spend time with his remaining limbs’. Apparently he was quite the character, with Headmaster of the time, Professor Dippet, putting him on probation over 60 times. We’d like to have known you better, sir.

## The guest list  
Before there can be any party, there must be a guest list – that alone can make or break an event. [Harry](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) tended to have rather rubbish birthdays when he was with the Dursleys, but things significantly improved when he could celebrate with his favourite people. Our first party tip? Don’t create a party full of [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) that get you down – fill it with people who will help bring the magic.  

Speaking of which, you have to actually invite the guests. While there are many ways to do this (though we wouldn’t recommend [owl post](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/owl-post)), there is one wizarding invitation that trumps them all… the [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) acceptance letter. Imagine your guests’ faces as they open your invitation that seems like one of their very own – we’d bet [Galleons](/fact-file/objects/wizarding-money) that you wouldn’t get a single no.

## Every party needs a theme 

Isn’t Harry Potter a theme on its own? Absolutely! A Potter party combining all your favourite things into some sort of wizarding world mashup would be spectacular. Yet, as the wizarding world is *so* vast and varied, it would be equally cool to home in on a particular element.  

Such as the Hogwarts houses. Bedeck every available space in the house colours, encourage some friendly competition and give every guest the opportunity to show off their house pride.

Or if you want your party to be a little bit more lowkey, a birthday at [The Burrow](/fact-file/locations/the-burrow) would be the cutest theme! ## Let them eat cake

Although Harry’s formative years were sadly cake-less, things changed once he joined the wizarding world… immediately in fact. Anyway, it turns out there are plenty of wizarding bakes to be inspired by! 

When [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) burst into the Hut-on-the-Rock, armed with a pink cake with ‘Happee Birthdae Harry’ in bright green and a huge secret, Harry’s life changed forever. As a symbol of his best birthday (nothing beats finding out you’re magic) and as one of the most iconic birthday cakes ever, you couldn’t go wrong with recreating it. While we’re not saying you should have a dour Dursley-themed party (or hide cake under the floorboards), it could be fun to emulate the year of four birthday cakes! Like Harry’s friends sent them to him, your friends could each bring a different cake to your party – wizarding bake-off anyone?  

Finally, if you’re looking for a showstopper, then look to Mrs Weasley! Her beachball-sized, [Golden Snitch](/fact-file/objects/golden-snitch) cake was described as ‘amazing’ by Harry. If you were to have one, not only would it wow your guests, but it would be a guaranteed conversation starter.

## It’s all fun and games 

There are so many fun ways to add a wizarding twist to your party games – here are a few to spark your imagination.

Making things a little more musical, imagine how epic it would be to have a wand battle dance-off. Channel your favourite character, throw some excellent wand shapes and add your own flair. Some may say Neville had the memory of a goldfish. Some may say Neville's magical acumen left a lot to be desired. But don't listen to Augusta Longbottom! Yes, oh yes, if you're reading this paragraph, we sense an intense rhythm positively emanating from you. As any hardcore Neville fan knows, the guy knows a thing or two about throwing some shapes on the dancefloor. And we're just so glad the Yule Ball rocked around in fourth year for Neville to discover his untapped potential in this area.

Some people just have an innate sense of musical timing, and some... do not. Not naming any names, Harry and Ron. But you absolutely do - whether that's finessing the absolute perfect playlist (Hedwig's Theme x 34, right?) or secretly harboring rock god status on your guitar in your bedroom. 

With this in mind, take a leaf out of Nev's book and dance like nobody's watching. Because even if they were, they'd probably give you tens, tens, tens across the board.

That's you, that is. Yes, whatever the weather, you are just, quite simply, very very cold. But not just in winter. All the time. Even in the summer, you can be caught with an emergency hoodie or blanket at a picnic. Just in case. We see you.

Now, in Neville's defence, he was in a freezing, draughty castle a lot of the time we got to know him, and as such, was often to be found sensibly layering up in some extremely charming knitwear. But we get the impression Neville enjoys being cosy, whichever season it may be. And never forget he even slayed the final Horcrux in an absolutely adorable cardigan.
