With so many wonderful personalities reflected in nearly 150 possible Patronuses, it turns out you might share one with a Harry Potter character. From their unique quirks to how popular it is among your house – here are those animal forms. Can you spot yours on this list?

## Harry Potter & James Potter: Stag – Stately Sentinel

__*Considered the royalty of the British woodland, deer are proud and magnificent creatures. Interestingly, both James and Harry Potter’s Patronuses were that of a mighty stag who would charge at Dementors antlers first.*__

With their [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) tendency to dive headfirst into dangerous situations – especially when it involved protecting people they love – [Harry](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) and his father, [James](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/james-potter), were an excellent reflection of their Patronus. Interestingly, those of you in Hufflepuff seem the most drawn to this Patronus – but only just.

The stag is a rather rare form, taking the 119th spot in terms of popularity – the same as its ranking in Ravenclaw. In 118th place, it is slightly more common in Gryffindor and sneaks up another spot in Hufflepuff as 117th most popular. It is least popular in Slytherin at 127. 

## Lily Potter & Severus Snape: Doe – Majestic Protector

__*The queens of the British woodland, these female deer are proud, magnificent creatures. Lily Potter and Severus Snape each famously had a doe Patronus, with Snape’s being a representation of his love for Harry's mother.*__ 

Knowing the origins of [Snape’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/severus-snape) Patronus stretch right back to his and [Lily’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lily-potter) childhood, we weren’t surprised to find that this was unique to him and not a Patronus that [Slytherins](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/slytherin) are often drawn towards. Out of all four houses, it is the least popular there, in 126th place.

At number 120, this Patronus is also rare among the other houses. While Lily and James’ Patronuses matched perfectly as King and Queen of the forest, in 119th place, this isn’t a common occurrence among other Gryffindors. You’ll find slightly more in Hufflepuff where it takes 118th place and Ravenclaw matches the overall ranking of 120. 

## Remus Lupin & Nymphadora Tonks: Wolf – Strong and Soulful

__*Known for their distinctive, soulful howl and mysterious nocturnal habits, it's easy to see why wolves have captured the imagination of many a storyteller. This animal is also significant for being Lupin's Patronus which was shared with Tonks.*__ 

Both [Lupin](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/remus-lupin) and [Tonks](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/nymphadora-tonks-fact-file) had an interesting relationship with their Patronus. For Lupin, though it was a wolf rather than a [werewolf](/fact-file/creatures/werewolf), he thought his animal guardian was too close to his *furry little problem*. When casting the spell, he would choose to disguise it by producing an incorporeal Patronus instead.  

Although Tonks was a [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), at number 74, you’ll find this Patronus the least in her house. Yet, this isn’t entirely unexpected. Tonks’ Patronus wasn’t always a wolf – it had originally been a jackrabbit. Her love for Remus Lupin caused it to change form. 

Actually, while it is the 50th most popular Patronus, you’ll find quite a lot of Slytherins with this enigmatic guardian – it’s their 27th most popular. At number 40, it’s not quite as common in Ravenclaw but we wouldn’t consider it rare. In 52nd position, there are a few less in Gryffindor. 

## Kingsley Shacklebolt: Lynx – Graceful and Gleaming

__*Their name might derive from the Greek word ‘to shine’ (thanks to their reflective eyes), yet Lynxes prefer to remain hidden. This wise animal makes a perfect guardian – and you share this Patronus with the ever-stoic Kingsley Shacklebolt.*__ 

A rare gem like [Kingsley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/kingsley-shacklebolt), the lynx is 92nd when it comes to Patronus popularity. Curiously, this Patronus that eschews the spotlight is most common in Hufflepuff in 62nd place. At the other end of the scale, its number 100 for Slytherin. There are a couple more in Gryffindor as the 96th most popular, and it is slightly higher up the [Ravenclaw](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/ravenclaw) ranking in 83rd place. 

## Arthur Weasley: Weasel – Savvy and Sleek

__*The nimble weasel is often depicted in culture as being a wily old thing. As someone with this Patronus, perhaps it speaks to your intelligent and perceptive nature? It also happened to be Arthur Weasley’s Patronus, so you’re in excellent company.*__ 

If one of the [Weasleys](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-weasleys) didn’t have a weasel it would W-easily be considered weird. Luckily, this smart and sprightly creature is the Patronus form of the Weasley patriarch, [Arthur](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/arthur-weasley). At number six, it is one of the more popular Patronuses. However, despite having ties to a Gryffindor family, you’ll find the most weasels in Slytherin, where it takes third place. 

For Gryffindor? Well, it drops just below the overall ranking in seventh place. It is sixth for Ravenclaw and in 12th place, it is least popular among Hufflepuffs. 

## Seamus Finnigan: Fox – Stealthy and Shrewd

__*Foxes are a widely known symbol of cunning and stealth. Highly adaptable, your Patronus has the ability to thrive anywhere. Interestingly, this wily creature happened to be the Patronus of Harry’s classmate, Seamus Finnigan: so you're in good company.*__ 

At number four, the clever fox is one of the more popular Patronuses. Yet even though a fox’s coat contains the red and gold of Gryffindor and member of that house, [Seamus Finnigan](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/seamus-finnigan), had this Patronus… you’ll find most in Slytherin. It just misses out on their top spot in second place. It drops down to third for Ravenclaw, fifth for Gryffindor and eighth for Hufflepuff.  

## Hermione Granger: Otter – Clever and Capable

__*Otters are nimble creatures and talented swimmers. Playful and dexterous – they have even been known to juggle rocks. Known for their intelligence, it is no surprise that Hermione Granger also has this Patronus.*__ 

[Hermione’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) Patronus was always going to reflect her intelligent nature, and it appears to be the case for a lot of you too! At 23rd most popular, we are in the company of quite a few brainiacs. 

Interestingly, Hufflepuff are the house most drawn to this Patronus – breaking into their top 20 at number 17. Ravenclaw is close behind at 19 and it takes 22nd place in Gryffindor. However, it appears Slytherins have less of an affinity with this fluffy friend, dropping well below the overall rank to number 61. 

## Fred Weasley & George Weasley: Magpie – Sociable Collector

__*These birds are most known for being collectors of shiny objects (very Niffler coded). They’re also social and chatter to each other. Interestingly, [Fred](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/fred-weasley) and [George](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/george-weasley) both had this Patronus, which complements their personalities.*__ 

They say that if you see two magpies you can expect joy... when both Weasley twins were together? It was joy squared. However, in seventh place, it seems as though Slytherin is most fond of these sharp-sighted birds.

You could say Slytherin have a unique connection to this animal form – it isn’t anywhere near another top ten and is 41st overall. It takes 45th and 50th position for Ravenclaw and Gryffindor. It is even less common in Hufflepuff, at number 85. 

## Luna Lovegood: Brown Hare – Eccentric Energy

__*Hares are famously known for their speed, eccentricity and connection to the moon. Interestingly, Luna Lovegood’s Patronus happened to be a hare too! She’s certainly not afraid to lean into her uniqueness. Can you relate?*__

This dreamy Patronus suits the [equally dreamy Ravenclaw](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/luna-lovegood) with its distinctive quirks. At number 34, there are many of you who feel the pull towards the sprightly hare. Most of you are in Gryffindor, where it the 26th most common Patronus. In Hufflepuff it is number 32 and it is 37 for Ravenclaw. Bucking the trend, you will spot less of these guardians in Slytherin where it takes 58th place. 

## Ernie Macmillan: Wild Boar – Wild Grandeur

__*The grandeur of the wild boar would make this a perfect Patronus for anyone in a tight bind. Interestingly, Harry's schoolmate Ernie Macmillan had a Wild Boar Patronus, which certainly complements the confidence Ernie liked to exhibit at Hogwarts!*__

Well, you can’t fault [Ernie](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ernie-macmillan-fact-file) for believing in himself! While he was a Hufflepuff, it turns out that there are more Ravenclaws with this Patronus – in 51st place compared to 58th. At number 60, it is still slightly more popular in Gryffindor than the overall ranking of 65. It is rarest in Slytherin at number 67 in their list.

# What about those Patronuses that are slightly different?

There are some characters in the wizarding world whose Patronuses are either not quite the same as the ones you might have discovered or whose forms are only known in more general terms. Yet, they’re still just as fascinating…

## Minerva McGonagall: Cat

As an exceptionally talented witch, while many were unable to even summon an incorporeal Patronus, [McGonagall](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/minerva-mcgonagall) could conjure multiple at once! Harry witnessed three of her cats, all with spectacle markings around their eyes, acting as messengers for the Head of Gryffindor.

Interestingly, we know that McGonagall was an [Animagus](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/animagus) who turned into a tabby cat with spectacle markings around her eyes. As a Patronus can match the animal form of an Animagus – we wonder if it’s the same for the [Transfiguration](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/transfiguration) teacher?

## Dolores Umbridge: Cat

It may seem strange that rotten-to-the-core [Umbridge](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/dolores-umbridge) was able to produce a Patronus – especially with many in the wizarding world holding the (somewhat justified) belief that a wizard can’t produce a Patronus if they’re not pure of heart. The Dark wizard Raczidian discovered this, when his backfiring [Charm](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/charms) ended with him being devoured by maggots.

Umbridge is one of the exceptions. Some believe, in cases such as this, if a person has total conviction in the rightness of their actions (even if they are deplorable) it can create the necessary happiness. Yet, many Dark witches and wizards see the Patronus Charm as unnecessary – already numbed to the effects of the Dark creatures they associate with. 

## Ron Weasley: Jack Russell Terrier

Known for being brilliant best friends, we can see why [Ron](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ron-weasley) (also a brilliant best friend) found himself with a Jack Russell Terrier. With their mixture of loyalty, mischief-making and ability to eat pretty much anything – it just works.

There are two terriers within the Patronus experience – the Fox Terrier and the West Highland Terrier. As the Playful Protector and Bubbly Buddy, we think Ron’s Jack Russell would fit in well with these other pups. 

## Ginny Weasley: Horse

We might not have discovered what kind of horse [Ginny’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ginny-weasley) Patronus was… but we can see why it took that form. Horses are known for their powerful and wild natures – Ginny proved that she was a force to be reckoned with as the [Bat Bogey-Hex](/fact-file/spells/the-bat-bogey-hex) queen. They’re also known for their speed and athleticism – Ginny was an extremely talented [Quidditch](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/quidditch) player. Horses are strong-willed and determined – remember what happened when they tried stop Ginny joining the [Battle of Hogwarts](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-battle-of-hogwarts)?

We think Ginny and her Patronus make a perfect pair.

## Cho Chang: Swan

While we know that [Cho Chang’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/cho-chang) Patronus was a swan, it wasn’t made clear whether that was the graceful white swan or dignified black swan. Either way, her spectacular flying ability reflects the innate elegance of both. Plus, swans are known to be loyal and that was certainly the case when it came to Cho’s relationship with [Cedric Diggory.](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/cedric-diggory)

# The curious case of the Dumbledore family Patronuses  

It turns out that both [Aberforth](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file) and [Albus Dumbledore ](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore)have Patronus forms that live outside of the Patronus experiences – fitting as they’re both one-of-a-kind.  

## Albus Dumbledore: Phoenix

With [Fawkes](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/fawkes) as his trusted companion, it seems Albus already had an affinity with these majestic creatures – they’re both powerful and mysterious beings. Also, if you consider that in the wizarding world Patronuses which take the form of magical creatures are exceedingly rare, Dumbledore’s guardian could be seen as a reflection of his uniqueness and rare talent.

## Aberforth Dumbledore: Goat

The younger brother of Albus and owner of the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head), Aberforth was another Dumbledore known for his eccentricity. He famously had a fondness for goats, so we’re not shocked that this turned out to be his Patronus form. Plus, we don’t think it’s a coincidence that goats are known for being extremely stubborn and a certain crochety pub owner had that personality trait too.

## Harry Potter

With his name in the title of every book, [Harry James Potter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) didn’t just give off main character energy – he *was* the main character.

A half-blood wizard, he looked like his father, [James](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/james-potter), but had green eyes like his mother, [Lily](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lily-potter). Thanks to [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort), he also possessed a lightning-shaped scar on his forehead – a permanent reminder that he was the only person to have survived the [Killing Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-killing-curse).

Having been brought up by his miserable [Muggle](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) relatives (The Dursleys), the Boy-Who-Lived’s magic remained a mystery to him until his eleventh birthday… when a letter from [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) changed his life forever.

A [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor), Harry was brave, resilient and quickly embraced all aspects of life at Hogwarts. From the good, such as finding his two best friends and becoming the youngest [Seeker](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/seeker) in a century to play for a house [Quidditch](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/quidditch) team. To the bad, like battling [Dark magic](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dark-arts) and finding himself covered in [Stinksap](/fact-file/plants-and-potions/mimbulus-mimbletonia) in front of his crush. 

Although he made mistakes along the way, Harry was truly a good person and a natural leader (which he would humbly deny). The fate of the wizarding world might have been on his shoulders but with courage, and Ron and Hermione by his side, Harry could face anything.

## Ron Weasley

The sixth of seven siblings, [Ronald Bilius Weasley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ron-weasley) was a pure-blood wizard, Gryffindor and Harry’s first best friend. As part of this [flame-haired bunch](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-weasleys), he grew up in their ramshackle but loving family home, [The Burrow](/fact-file/locations/the-burrow).

Ron was loyal, brave and hilarious… ‘Merlin’s most baggy Y-fronts’ had us cackling. Whether he was facing his fears by following the spiders to help Harry or standing up to [Malfoy](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/draco-malfoy) when he called Hermione a ‘Mudblood’, Ron proved to be a brilliant friend.

Yet, having grown up in the shadow of his siblings where everything, including his [pet rat](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/scabbers), was a hand-me-down that once belonged to someone else, he struggled with feeling inadequate. Unfortunately, his two best friends being the Chosen One and the smartest person in their year didn’t help with these feelings, causing a few bumps along the way.

Ultimately, Ron was a hero in his own right. A wizard with plenty of his own strengths and a crucial part of the golden trio.

## Hermione Granger

The [Muggle-born](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggle-borns) daughter of two dentists, [Hermione Jean Granger](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) was a Gryffindor with bushy brown hair, a brilliant mind, and the important final member of the golden trio. Despite having grown up with no knowledge that magic existed, Hermione soon fixed that – reading all her textbooks before school began.

A smart move… but what else would we expect from the witch that got 112% in her [Charms](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/charms) exam? The person who used cool logic to solve a Potions puzzle that would defeat most adults when she was only a first-year? Or the teenager entrusted with a very valuable [Time-Turner](/fact-file/objects/time-turner) by the [Ministry of Magic](/fact-file/locations/the-ministry-of-magic) itself?

However, that intelligence could prove to be a double-edged sword, with many believing her to be an ‘insufferable know-it-all’ – even Harry and Ron when they first met her. Yet, despite a few teething problems, they soon became inseparable.

Beyond her brain, Hermione was every bit as loyal and brave as Harry and Ron. Yes, they had their fallings out (justice for [Crookshanks](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/crookshanks)!). And yes, they might not understand her love of the [library](/fact-file/locations/the-hogwarts-library), but they knew she would always have their back and most likely the answer too.

### Harry James Potter
That’s right! [Harry Potter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) is *not* Harry Potter in every translation of the stories. In Brazil, the Boy-Who-Lived’s middle name is no longer James, it’s Tiago. In Norwegian, James becomes Jakob.

His entire name is completely different in the Latvian edition – Harijs Džeims Poters. It’s a similar story in the Lithuanian version, where he’s known as Haris Džeimsas Poteris.

You know him as member of the iconic [Weasley](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-weasleys) family… but that isn’t always the case. In Norwegian, the Weasleys become the Wiltersons, with [Ron](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ron-weasley) known as Ronny Kolerius Wiltersen. Whereas in Dutch, his family name is Wemel.

While the Latvian version only changed Ron’s surname to Vīzlij, the Lithuanian translation has a few more modifications to the original – Ronaldas Bilijus Vizlis.

### Hermione Jean Granger
At first glance, the translations of [Hermione’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) name all look quite similar. However, channel her attention to detail and you’ll spot the unique distinctions.  

Take the Hungarian version, where her middle name has gone from Jean to Jane. Or the Norwegian, where she is known as Hermine Grang. Then there’s the Polish, Hermiona Granger, too.   

The Dutch edition has a few more changes, where she is known by the powerful moniker, Hermelien Griffel.  

Her first name remains the same in Latvian, as Hermione Džīn Grendžer. Though that’s not the case in Lithuanian where she’s known as Hermiona Džin Įkyrėlė.

### Albus Dumbledore
The twinkly-eyed [Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) is known as Alvo rather than Albus in Brazil. Going a step further, both of his names are different in Lithuanian edition, where he’s known as Albas Dumbldoras. The Latvian is even more distinct, with the headmaster known as Baltuss Dumidors.

Though a few translations keep the first name, Albus, the same can’t be said for his surname, Dumbledore. In Italian, the enigmatic headmaster is Silente – the Italian word for silence. In Dutch, Dumbledore becomes Perkamentus and he’s Albus Humlesnurr in Norwegian.

### Severus Snape
In some translations of the stories, the rather severe Severus isn’t known as Severus at all. In fact, his name in Hungarian is unrecognisable – Perselus Piton!

While not quite such a dramatic change, in Brazil, Severus become Severo. The Latvian translates [Severus Snape](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/severus-snape) to Severuss Strups, and in Lithuanian he’s Severas Sneipas.

His surname might not be the same in different countries… but they all suit his waspish personality. Snape becomes Sneep in Dutch, Piton in Italian and even Slur in Norwegian. In French his surname is Rogue – fitting for how his story eventually unfolds.

### Minerva McGonagall
Although known by various names in various languages, each capture the firm but fair nature of the brilliant Head of Gryffindor. In fact, many kept [Minerva](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/minerva-mcgonagall) – which was also the name of the Roman goddess of warriors and wisdom – only altering her last name.

Such as the Lithuanian translation, where McGonagall becomes the very similar, Makgonagal. Plus, the Hungarian edition, where her last name is McGalagony.

Although it retains the start of the [Transfiguration](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/transfiguration) teacher’s surname, in Norway, Minerva is now a McSnurp. The Dutch edition ditches the original name completely, calling her Minerva Anderling.

In Latvia, both names were changed when translated – becoming Minervas Maksūra. In the Polish books, she’s Minerwy McGonagal.

### Draco Malfoy
Harry’s arch-rival had a name that suited his slippery nature – in every language. In Dutch he became the malevolent, Malfidus. The Norwegian translation adds to that sharp nature, with Malfang.

Similar to the English edition, in French, [Draco Malfoy](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/draco-malfoy) becomes Drago Malefoy – with both surnames having been influenced by the old French for ‘bad faith’.

Latvia follows a similar pattern, with Drako Malfojs still appearing to be quite close to the original. However, the Lithuanian moves away from Malfoy entirely with Drakas Smirdžius.

### Neville Longbottom
Did you know that in the Dutch translation, [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) is no longer Neville but Marcel? Yep, our favourite [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) underdog is the one and only, Marcel Lubbermans.

Both his names are also different in Norwegian, where he is known as Nilus Langballe. It’s a similar story for the Latvian version, where he’s known as Nevils Lēniņš and the Lithuanian too, as Nevilis Nevėkšla.

In the French edition, Neville is still called Neville, but his last name is Londubat rather than Longbottom.

### Lord Voldemort
Ah the Dark Lord. In *Chamber of Secrets*, we learn (thanks to a handy anagram) that Tom Marvolo Riddle is none other than [Lord Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort). When the stories were translated, his name needed a little adjusting to make it work in other languages, giving us some fantastic versions of Voldemort.

In France, Elvis hasn’t left the building, with Tom Elvis Jedusor. In Dutch, he is the extremely sensible-sounding Marten Asmodom Vilijn. This is just the tip of the iceberg! ### Peter Pettigrew
A rat through-and-through, we might have also known him as [Scabbers](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/scabbers) and Wormtail, but those aren’t his only other names. In Brazil, Peter became Pedro and in Poland, he’s Petera.

The opposite is true for the Dutch translation, where he keeps [Peter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/peter-pettigrew) but is Pippeling rather than Pettigrew. It’s the same for the French, where there’s a subtle shift from Pettigrew to Pettigrow.

In some languages, there are differences in both names. Take Norwegian, where he’s Petter Pittelpytt. The Latvian edition calls him, Pīters Sīkaudzis. Finally, in Lithuanian he’s the pitiful, Piteris Trumpulis.

### Buckbeak
Last, but by no means least, we have [Buckbeak](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/buckbeak). A [Hippogriff](/fact-file/creatures/hippogriff) who was no stranger to a name change – he did become Witherwings after all! In Germany, he is known by the rather excellent, Seidenschnabel. In Italy, he goes by moniker, Fierobecco. The Dutch version of his name is the strong, Scheurbek.

We can’t help but think that the Norwegian, Bukknebb, sounds rather cute – plus the Brazilian Portuguese version, Bicuço.

In Poland, Buckbeak beomes Hardodziob. In Latvia he is known as Švītknābis. In Lithuania, he’s Kietasprandis and called Csikócsõr in the Hungarian translations – phew! What a smorgasbord of brilliant names.

Bold, possibly a little but reckless, but with a heart bursting with love. If this sounds like you, then we think you picked [Care of Magical Creatures](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/care-of-magical-creatures). With your caring nature, you are happiest when surrounded by animals. Big or small, you adore them all… especially those that you think are misunderstood.

*Spoiler warning! Even though we’re dipping into the past – we may also drift into some key Harry Potter plot points in his present! Tread carefully.*  

## The House founders

As well as, you know, pretty much inventing Hogwarts itself, Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff and Salazar Slytherin also taught there. (It was probably hard to head-hunt back in the tenth century...) We’re not sure exactly how they divvied up teaching responsibilities, but we can make a few educated guesses. 

With Godric Gryffindor’s duelling prowess, it’s likely he would’ve passed on these skills to his students – and was known to focus on teaching ‘the bravest and the boldest’. Helga Hufflepuff was a lot more open-minded, promising to teach ‘the lot’ and had a particular talent with Charms. With her all-encompassing wisdom, Rowena Ravenclaw’s students were known to be highly intelligent, while Salazar Slytherin was too busy only teaching students ‘whose ancestry is purest’ ... 

Not the best way to operate a school, but thankfully specific classes and teachers with the right expertise would soon follow! 

## Armando Dippet  

Before Albus Dumbledore, there was Armando Dippet: often described as a ‘frail-looking wizard’ who had his fair share of challenges as Hogwarts Headmaster too. 

The most notable thing to know about Dippet was his misjudged fondness of a particular student called – yes, you guessed it – Tom Riddle. During Dippet’s tenure, Riddle opened the Chamber of Secrets (an event which Dippet then tried to cover up) never realising it was, in fact, the young Lord Voldemort who did the deed in the first place.  

Dippet and Riddle even became somewhat friendly, with Riddle asking the Headmaster if he could have a job at the school after he graduated. Thankfully, for the students of Hogwarts, a suspicious Dumbledore (who worked at Hogwarts as a professor at the time) persuaded Dippet against the appointment. 

So, although Dippet was nowhere near as bad a Headmaster as, say, Dolores Umbridge, he seemed to lack the vigilance that his famous successor had in abundance. Perhaps this wizard’s reputation can be best summed up by Rita Skeeter’s best-selling book on the man, Armando Dippet: Master or Moron? 

## Herbert Beery  

The then-Herbology professor before Pomona Sprout’s time, Professor Herbert Beery didn’t just love magical flora and fauna, but also amateur dramatics. Thanks to Herbert, Hogwarts put on their ‘sole attempt’ at a Christmas pantomime with him in charge – taking on the story of The Fountain of Fair Fortune from The Tales of Beedle the Bard.  

Suffice it to say, due to a comedy of errors, the production ended up creating a fiery inferno in The Great Hall, ending with a packed Hospital Wing and a vow from the Headmaster, Professor Dippet, to never put on another pantomime again. Maybe Herbert should’ve stuck to Bubotubers.  

## Phineas Nigellus Black

Like most of Sirius Black’s ancestors, Phineas Nigellus wasn’t a particularly nice fellow. In fact, he was known as one of the most unpopular Hogwarts Headmasters of all time. Of course, we had the misfortune of meeting Phineas in Harry’s story, albeit as a grumpy, sardonic portrait.  

But in his days actually in charge of Hogwarts (which Hogwarts Legacy players know all too well!) Professor Black was even more dastardly than the painted version, exhibiting the same Pure-Blood fanatical views as many of his other family members. But his greatest crime? A lot of Hogwarts students would probably say banning Quidditch for a whole year... 

## Dilys Derwent  

Another character we meet in Dumbledore’s office as a portrait, Dilys Derwent was a Healer at St Mungo’s Hospital, and soon went on to become Headmistress at Hogwarts in the 1700s – quite the double whammy. 

During the attack of Arthur Weasley in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Dumbledore asks for help from two of Hogwarts’ most ‘celebrated Heads’, with Dilys being one, alongside a fellow Headmaster named Everard. Even as portraits, the two professors are able to help the cause; due to their high statuses in life, they have other portraits hanging in various esteemed establishments, able to pass from one to another to help find Arthur.  

## Special shoutouts 

A couple of Hogwarts professors of yesteryear did bleed into Harry’s present, but we’re sure they had many more stories to tell. Of course, Professor Binns has been at Hogwarts so long he did actually used to be alive at one point... while Professor Slughorn originally taught at Hogwarts during Tom Riddle’s era, famously telling him about Horcruxes: whoops. Then there’s Silvanus Kettleburn, who left the post of Care of Magical Creatures professor to make way for Hagrid – and to ‘spend time with his remaining limbs’. Apparently he was quite the character, with Headmaster of the time, Professor Dippet, putting him on probation over 60 times. We’d like to have known you better, sir.

## Firstly, who were the Dursleys?

The Dursleys were a [Muggle](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) family who took an extraordinary amount of pride in their ordinariness – [Vernon Dursley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/vernon-dursley) even had a moustache comb. If that wasn’t monumentally mundane enough, they lived in an extremely ordinary house on a totally normal street – [number four, Privet Drive](/fact-file/locations/number-four-privet-drive).  

[Petunia](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/petunia-dursley) was Harry’s aunt and the only sister of his mother, [Lily](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lily-potter) – their similarities ended at their floral names. Where Lily was kind-spirited and welcoming, Petunia was mean and narrow-minded. 

Her husband, Vernon, was a director of the drill-making firm, Grunnings. A respectable job to match his respectable car and respectable family. Having a witch for a sister-in-law? Not respectable. 

Together, they had their son and apple-of-their-eye – Diddykins (otherwise known as [Dudley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/dudley-dursley)). Some would call Dudley boisterous while most others would call him a spoilt bully.  

We also had the unfortunate honour of meeting Vernon’s sister, [Marge](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/marge-dursley), but the less said about the incident which was… blown completely out of proportion, the better. 

By the time Harry arrived on their doorstep, Vernon and Petunia Dursley were not close with Lily and [James](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/james-potter) Potter. Actually, after a disastrous dinner at a restaurant, Petunia not having Lily as one of her bridesmaids, and Vernon referring to James as an ‘amateur magician’, they weren’t on speaking terms.

## Ok, but why were they so horrible to Harry? 

With an introduction like that, it’ll come as no surprise to learn that the Dursleys were very prejudiced people. Anything that they didn’t understand, they feared – including magic. Something that unusual couldn’t be good and that included Harry. 

There is one other reason to consider here – jealousy. Did you know that Petunia had wanted to be a witch too? She had even written to [Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) as a child to ask if she could go to [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts). Although he let her down gently, Petunia’s resentment towards her sister and magic continued to grow. Eventually, magic was no longer the thing she most wanted, it was the thing she most despised.  

Harry was a living, breathing reminder of Petunia’s pain and a threat to the carefully curated image of her family. There would be no greater disaster than if the neighbours found out who Harry truly was – how could they bear the scandal!

## Surely, they had other family who could take Harry in?

Well, with that history, leaving your only son to live with the sister who threw his birth announcement in the bin is… not ideal. But, when [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) murdered Lily and James Potter, there wasn’t another choice. Lily didn’t have any other living family.

On James’ part, his parents Fleamont (the creator of [Sleekeazy’s Hair Potion](/fact-file/plants-and-potions/sleekeazys-hair-potion)) and Euphemia, had passed away. Born after Fleamont had retired, James was their only son – a wonderful surprise after they had given up any hope of having a child. Although they lived long enough to see him get married, Dragon Pox claimed them both before they met their grandson.

## Or literally anyone else?

Outside of their blood relations, the people that were closest to the [Potters](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-potters) were not in any position to take Harry in. The [Marauders](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/marauders) had broken apart completely – [Peter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/peter-pettigrew) was thought to be dead, [Sirius](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sirius-black) was locked up for Peter’s murder and [Lupin](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/remus-lupin) had retreated to the outskirts of society. 

Plus, while we’re sure that lots of wizarding families would have jumped at the opportunity to take in and raise the Boy-Who-Lived, Dumbledore thought that there might be a deeper magic at play – making this impossible.

## Couldn’t he live somewhere else once he knew he was a wizard? 

It’s true that Harry felt more at home at Hogwarts than he ever had at the Dursleys. He was no longer the lonely little boy in the cupboard-under-the-stairs – and not just because everybody here knew who he was. He had finally found his people – from his best friends to his godfather and everybody else who was there for him. 

Except, none of them were related to him by blood. More specifically, none of these people shared his mother’s blood. This is the crucial point. Even if James’ family had been alive, Harry couldn’t have stayed with them – and it all goes back to the [prophecy](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/sybill-trelawneys-first-prophecy). 

When [Professor Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) spoke of the one person who could vanquish the Dark Lord, Voldemort believed that meant Harry Potter. Determined to eliminate any threat to his power, he decided that the Potter family must be killed. 

Surprisingly, one of his most loyal [Death Eaters](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/death-eaters), [Severus Snape](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/severus-snape), asked him to spare the life of Lily Potter. So, when Voldemort arrived on that Hallowe’en night in [Godric’s Hollow](/fact-file/locations/godrics-hollow), he gave Lily a choice. If she stepped aside and allowed him to kill Harry, he would let her live. She refused. He murdered her to get to her son. 

Except, Voldemort did not know that Lily’s sacrifice had unlocked an ancient magic. When she gave up her life to protect Harry, that protection lingered – flowing through his veins and making it impossible for Voldemort to touch him.  

Suspecting this, Dumbledore took Harry to live with the only other person to share Lily’s blood, Petunia. Despite being incredibly reluctant, bitter and furious (amongst other things), Petunia brought Harry into her home, sealing the Charm Dumbledore had placed – the bond of blood being the strongest shield he could give him.  

As Dumbledore explained in a letter to Petunia, while Harry could refer to the place where his mother’s blood still dwells as home, Voldemort could not harm him. Even if he only returned once a year. Even if it was miserable for him there. Even if the Dursleys resented him. As long as number four, Privet Drive was his home, the magic would continue to work. Harry would be protected, and Lily’s love and sacrifice would be honoured.

## The guest list  
Before there can be any party, there must be a guest list – that alone can make or break an event. [Harry](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) tended to have rather rubbish birthdays when he was with the Dursleys, but things significantly improved when he could celebrate with his favourite people. Our first party tip? Don’t create a party full of [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) that get you down – fill it with people who will help bring the magic.  

Speaking of which, you have to actually invite the guests. While there are many ways to do this (though we wouldn’t recommend [owl post](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/owl-post)), there is one wizarding invitation that trumps them all… the [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) acceptance letter. ## Every party needs a theme 

Isn’t Harry Potter a theme on its own? Absolutely! A Potter party combining all your favourite things into some sort of wizarding world mashup would be spectacular. Yet, as the wizarding world is *so* vast and varied, it would be equally cool to home in on a particular element.  

Such as the Hogwarts houses. Bedeck every available space in the house colours, encourage some friendly competition and give every guest the opportunity to show off their house pride.

Or if you want your party to be a little bit more lowkey, a birthday at [The Burrow](/fact-file/locations/the-burrow) would be the cutest theme! ## Decorations  

Once you’ve got your theme locked down, it’s time to think about bringing it to life with some carefully curated party decorations. ## Let them eat cake

Although Harry’s formative years were sadly cake-less, things changed once he joined the wizarding world… immediately in fact. Anyway, it turns out there are plenty of wizarding bakes to be inspired by!

While we’re not saying you should have a dour Dursley-themed party (or hide cake under the floorboards), it could be fun to emulate the year of four birthday cakes!
