First, you need to find your Yule Ball inspiration
The event of the century doesn’t just happen. Without a clear vision, your party is guaranteed to be a damp Squib. Which is why we think you should look to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire for inspiration. Specifically, the stunning soiree that took place on Christmas Day – the Yule Ball…
As you can see, it’s the perfect festive theme! If you are still trying to figure out your Yule Ball vibe, from the fairies in the rose bushes to the blanket of sparkling silver frost in the Great Hall, there’s inspiration to be found in the pages of the fourth book too.

With frosty blue and purple tones, the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Interactive Illustrated Edition) captures the Yule Ball’s enchanting mix of grandeur, beauty and Christmas – an excellent starting point for your party mood board. **
Dazzle with your decorations…
Now that you have settled on your festive theme, it’s time to bring it to life with your décor. For an event this grand? It can’t be anything less than stunning.
You see, the Yule Ball happened during a time where all eyes were on Hogwarts. Everything that the visitors from Beauxbatons and Durmstrang saw, helped to shape their opinion of Hogwarts and its residents. This had to be a party that nobody would forget…

… Hogwarts delivered.
The Great Hall was transformed into a winter wonderland with magic in every detail. With a bit of imagination and a dash of creativity – you can do the same too.
Let it snow
Once again, the fourth book is an excellent starting point. We admit that having access to magic would make creating a wintry landscape indoors easier (we’re not expecting you to carpet your living room in fake snow), but with a few carefully chosen decorations, you can easily achieve the same vibe.
If you’re feeling crafty, you could forage for some festive foliage to recreate the Yule Ball garlands. Or hang a few well-placed sprigs of mistletoe – which we’re sure will be free of Nargles – to add a bit of romance. Why not channel your primary school days and rustle up some paper snowflakes? You could scatter them like snowdrifts or use a bit of string to make them seem like a flurry.

A carefully chosen snow globe pin would help to lean into the feeling of bringing the outside in. This gorgeous depiction of a snowy Hogwarts from the Harry Potter Shop would add that extra wintry touch. *

In fact, we think their entire Hogwarts in the Snow collection would brilliantly match your Yule Ball vibe. *
Lumos!
With fairy lights (and actual fairies), hundreds of flickering lanterns and the twinkling stars of the Great Hall ceiling, so much of the Yule Ball’s enchanting atmosphere was due to the lighting.

Luckily, from creating floating candles to making Cornish Pixie light-up jars, we’ve got a whole host of crafty ideas to help you illuminate your party.
Yule shall go to the ball
It wouldn’t be a party without people! It was a meaningful moment when witches and wizards from all over joined together to celebrate Christmas and international magical cooperation. As it's the season of goodwill, now is the ideal time to embrace this mentality when creating your guest list. Your Yule Ball could be an opportunity to reconnect and celebrate with your friends, family and community.
While that’s all very lovely, there is one other (possibly awkward) element when it comes to wondering who to invite to your party. The Yule Ball is a dance. A dance where you need a partner. A dance where you need… a date. For some of the Harry Potter characters that proved to be quite the challenge.
Okay, for Harry and Ron it was absolutely mortifying! However, don’t panic, if you channel the confidence of Fred or Hagrid’s warm-heartedness, you’ll have better luck.
Plus, the romance of the Yule Ball is also what makes it special. The possibilities. The butterflies in your tummy. Seeing someone in a whole new light. You never know, this could be the opportunity to tell your crush how you feel and begin your own epic love story.
Dress to impress
The Yule Ball was a formal event and an extremely glamorous one at that. As the dress code made clear, everyone was expected to wear their finest dress robes. While there were some fashion faux-pas – Ron’s monstrosity of maroon, lace and the aroma of his great-aunt Tessie – there were some style sensations too.
Who could forget the most iconic look of them all? Hermione Granger was the belle of the Yule Ball in her stunning dress robes. She was brave enough to step out of her comfort zone and try something new. Taking inspiration from her Yule Ball aesthetic seems like a wise choice to us.
Speaking of which, if your Yule Ball is set to include the little witches and wizards in your life, Taylor Joelle has a Hermione-inspired dress for children which would work brilliantly. **
Other wizarding fashionistas
If Hermione’s dress isn’t quite your style, there are plenty of other witches and wizards who you could be your Yule Ball muse.

Like the Triwizard champions, whose outfits were the perfect fit for their personalities. Fleur’s graceful gown wonderfully reflected her elegance. Cedric was dashing and debonair with his bowtie. Krum was the picture of strength in showstopping red.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Yule Ball fashion. If you pick up a copy of Harry Potter: Costumes of the Wizarding World, you’ll find a whole host of wonderful wizarding outfits to help inspire your own unique look and make your Yule Ball outfit a winner. **
Beauty magic

Like Hermione using copious amount of Sleekeazy’s Hair Potion, you also appreciate how beauty products can help elevate your party style. You might not be able to use the same magical concoction, but this new Harry Potter holiday collection by Profusion Cosmetics can help you to create your own magical Christmas look. **

Interestingly, there’s also a beauty lesson to be learnt from Ron – nobody wants to go to a party smelling like their great-aunt Tessie. Luckily, that mortification is easily avoided with a carefully chosen perfume from the Harry Potter collection by ROJA London that leaves you smelling delightful rather than dreadful.**
Add musical magic and dance the night away…
There can be no dancing without music! In Goblet of Fire, the famous wizarding rock band, The Weird Sisters, were the headline act of the Yule Ball. A brilliant choice as they were very popular when Harry was at Hogwarts – Ginny even had their poster on her wall!

Having music that everyone enjoys is a fantastic idea though. When considering what to play at your party, you could ask all your guests for their favourite song and create a playlist which is guaranteed to get them up on the dancefloor!
Or if you are going for a more formal vibe, you could have everyone waltz to the incredible score from the Harry Potter films.

On that note, you could pick your own Triwizard champions and challenge them to recreate the opening Yule Ball dance. Or have a dance-off inspired by the arrival of Beauxbatons and Durmstrang at Hogwarts… the possibilities are endless.
Most importantly… don’t forget to have fun.
