## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

So, whatever happened to… 

## Fluffy 

As we will never forget, this loveable three-headed dog played an integral role in the first book, terrorising anyone who dared come near the trapdoor that led to the Philosopher’s Stone. Naturally, Fluffy was a contribution from Hagrid, who bought him off a ‘Greek chappie’ down the pub. Someone really needs to introduce Hagrid to traditional shops.

After Fluffy had fulfilled his task of protecting the trapdoor (although not very well, seeing as his main flaw was falling asleep to music) we didn't meet him in the books again, although Harry did reminisce about him in the second story.

According to J.K. Rowling in 2015, we learnt that Dumbledore had made sure Fluffy returned home safely to Greece in the end.

Lovely Doris was one of the Leaky Cauldron lot who couldn’t believe their eyes when a young Harry Potter walked into the pub. She told Harry she was ‘just so proud’ to meet him, and got in quite a few handshakes before Harry was whisked off to Diagon Alley. 

She was there with the likes of Dedalus Diggle and Professor Quirrell, but while Quirrell played a key role in the first book and Diggle ended up being a member of the Order of the Phoenix, we never saw Doris get another Harry handshake again. Maybe she’s still down at the Leaky Cauldron, still reminiscing about her celebrity encounter.

The Sorting Ceremony was our first proper look at some of the other students sorted into Harry’s first year that weren’t main characters. For example, we saw Mandy Brocklehurst and Lisa Turpin become Ravenclaws, but never saw them again because Harry simply didn’t hang out with the Ravenclaws. 

We saw some of the other students of Harry’s year again (Terry Boot, for example, joined Dumbledore’s Army) but as for these Ravenclaw girls, who knows? And what about Sally-Anne Perks? Or Morag MacDougal? Whatever happened to them, we hope they had a nice time and did well in their studies. 

## The troll from the dungeon

Speaking of horrendous beasts randomly wandering around a school, Fluffy wasn’t the only one. There was, of course, the giant 12-foot mountain troll let loose in the dungeon. Thanks to Harry and Ron, the big lad was knocked out by his own club before he could do too much damage, and later on, we found out that Quirrell, acting under Voldemort’s orders, let the troll in in the first place. 

But we’re not sure what the troll went on to do after all of this business ended. As far as we know, there was no reunion party with Harry, Ron and Hermione, despite the troll technically being the reason their friendship ever properly happened. Bit rude of Harry not to set that up, to be honest. 

## Trolley witch

The lady who pushed the trolley on the Hogwarts Express kind of helped along Harry and Ron’s friendship by giving them lots of sweets to bond over. Although she continued to work on the train for years to come, she was also spotted at Dumbledore’s funeral. Well, we all know Dumbledore loved a sugary treat. 

## Norbert

Just in case trolls and three-headed dogs weren’t enough to scare the living daylights out of a bunch of children, Hagrid kindly threw Norbert the dragon into the mix too. As Hagrid lived in a wooden house, and baby dragons have the tendency to turn into much bigger dragons, this friendship didn’t last long, and Hagrid had to be convinced to let Norbert go, and the little fire-breathing tyke was carted off to Ron’s brother, Charlie. For their troubles, Harry and Hermione (and Neville, who was in the wrong place at the wrong time) got caught sneaking around after hours, and lost a mammoth 150 Gryffindor house points in total. We’re still a bit annoyed at Hagrid for not taking the fall on that one. 

Thankfully, we know that Norbert did go on to live a happy life in Romania, when Hagrid caught up with Charlie on how his beloved Norbert was doing years later. Charlie had to kindly report to Hagrid that Norbert was actually a girl, and these days she went by the name of Norberta. Oh, Hagrid.

## Yvonne

Oh come on, you remember Yvonne. Aunt Petunia’s friend who was considered a replacement for Mrs Figg for looking after Harry? The one who was on holiday in Majorca? We all loved Yvonne!

Firstly, he learns of the world of goblins, the formidable protectors of the bank. Then there’s the fact his parents have left him vast amounts of gold. But beyond the vault doors of Gringotts, there are all manner of treasures, secrets and mysteries that have been kept safe for many, many years. As Hagrid rightly says, ‘yeh’d be mad ter try an’ rob it.’

We’ll also take a look at just how secure Gringotts really is... 

## ‘The safest place in the world’ 

Hagrid describes Gringotts as ‘the safest place in the world fer anything yeh want ter keep safe – ’cept maybe Hogwarts’, and he’s right. Gringotts has many tiers of security, depending on the preference of the wizard or witch who has stored their treasures.

For Harry’s vault, a simple key is required, whereas other vaults require a goblin’s touch to open. Apparently, if a witch or wizard were to touch such a lock, they would be sucked into the vault and trapped there, entombed with the treasure they wished to take, but unable to use it – quite the cautionary tale. And it gets more intense than that...

The cruelty put upon the dragon teaches us of the toxic depths that greed can sink to, especially within the goblins themselves, apparently the protectors of Gringotts, yet will still go to immoral lengths to keep the gold safe. Inside the [Lestrange vault](/features/bellatrix-lestrange), Harry learns that a spell, Geminio, has been put on the Horcrux, meaning it will duplicate the object whenever touched. As Griphook says, ‘the copies are worthless’, and the expanding gold would eventually lead to being crushed to death. This spell, in itself, comments on the nature of materialism in the wizarding world – showing that excess can ultimately be meaningless, or even deadly.

We can look at the goblins warning in an even deeper sense than just protecting Gringotts itself. The poem foreshadows the theme of greed, which is a prevalent topic throughout the Harry Potter books. In fact, it comes rather early: think of the greed shown by the [Dursley family](/collection/the-dursley), in particular young Dudley, who is spoilt to obscene levels by his parents while Harry is left in the dark, living a modest life. 

Then there’s the greed of Lord Voldemort, who insists on surrounding himself with the most powerful and valuable magical objects, such as trying to seek the Philosopher's Stone, his desperation for the Elder Wand, even arrogantly using Harry’s blood to resurrect himself, which actually led to one of his greatest weaknesses. His insistance on using only rare artefacts of wizarding history, such as rare items once owned by Hogwarts founders, only highlighted Voldemort’s arrogance and materialistic nature even further. Throughout the stories, his facial expression is often described as ‘greedy’, whether that be for more followers, more powerful magic – or for finally mastering Death. 

And we all know how Voldemort’s story worked out.

If you attended Hogwarts, there were all manner of extra-curricular activities available to you to distract from the fact that your potions wouldn’t thicken, or that you kept falling off your broom. This was the club to go to if you really liked watching – and potentially causing – physical harm, but didn’t really want to commit to it as a regular Monday afternoon activity. It might have been a one-off, but it was a memorable one-off, what with the teacher-to-teacher combat, the grudge match between the Chosen One and the One Who Got Chosen Later But Really Would Rather Not Have Been, or the snakes being conjured from thin air. 

Despite the brevity, there were plenty of learnings to be taken from this club: don’t annoy Snape, avoid engaging in a duel if you’ve recently broken your wand in half, and don’t provoke Potter if you’re scared of limbless reptiles.

This was the big one. This was the one that came with real prestige. This was the one that allowed you to swan around the corridors with your posse of seven, broomsticks cocked jauntily over one shoulder, while fellow students swooned. Muggle or magical, the athletes of the school always hold a special power – so if you had the flight skills to pass the try-outs, this club should have been top pick. Of course, there were some severe cons to weigh against the pro of popularity: the likelihood of broken limbs, the knowledge that there were balls bent on battering you out of the sky, the fact of the ground being a really long way down. Small price to pay, though, once you felt the wind in your hair and heard the crowd chanting your name.

We don’t know much about Charms Club, really. But if it was led by Professor Flitwick, it was bound to be jolly good fun. Though it did feel a bit like an extension of a lesson you already have to take, which was possibly something only Hermione would enjoy. 

## Gobstones Club

This was the club you joined if your parents were concerned that you weren’t socialising enough, but you were really unwilling to join in with anything that might risk furthering you academically or physically.

Ah, the haunt of the politicians of the future. Though the name might imply the presence of Fred and George proffering their Puking Pastilles, the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare was really all about equality in wizarding society, and furthering the interests of those less fortunate. This probably wasn’t the ideal club to join if you wanted to get a bit of socialising in, since there was really only one club member.

If you’re Gryffindor-hearted, then you might immediately have shrunk from belonging to this club. The opulence, the hierarchy, the very real way that the leader would have left you out in the cold if you displayed even the slightest hint of ordinariness were all very Slytherin. But look again, chum. Because if you were ‘collected’ by Professor Slughorn, this was the place to be! Comfortable chairs, tales of celebrities, well connected Hogwarts alumni, and all the crystallised pineapple you could eat!

And even if you were engaging with everything that’s wrong with wizarding society, even if you had to watch Slughorn feast on pheasant, even if you had to listen to Blaise Zabini wax lyrical about the dating exploits of his beautiful mother, even if there was the possibility of accidentally consuming poison, still! You knew you were in the company of the elite, and that was worth the risk of all the above.

It’s probably the coolest club of the lot, but also the most dangerous, so swings and roundabouts.

Pros of the club involved close association with Dumbledore, getting the smartest witch in the school to help you learn complicated spells, and regularly hanging out in the coolest room in Hogwarts. Cons (and there are some weighty ones here) were having to watch Cho and Harry make love-heart eyes at each other, having to do loads of extra homework when you could be playing Gobstones, and the distinct statistical possibility that your membership would end with you being gnawed on by a werewolf.
