## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

As the only wizard to have survived Voldemort’s killing curse, Harry’s been a figurehead since he was a toddler. It’s not easy being the Chosen One, what with a near-impossible Horcrux hunting task to complete and the worst Dark wizard in history determined to kill you. It’s just a lot of pressure, really.

But it’s not just Harry who has it tough – anyone associated with him is subject to scrutiny. Standing by Harry means risking your life, your family and your friends. Just ask Xenophilius Lovegood, whose reward for supporting Harry was the imprisonment of his daughter, Luna. When the time came, Xenophilius ended up selling Harry out to the Death Eaters. 

Then there’s the fact that, for those still scarred by the First Wizarding War, Harry’s insistence on Voldemort’s return initially has very little supporting evidence. After all, only Harry witnessed Voldemort’s possession of Quirrell; only Harry learned the story of Tom Riddle’s diary from its source and only Harry faced Voldemort after the Triwizard Tournament. Whenever there were other witnesses – Ginny in *Chamber of Secrets,* Cedric in *Goblet of Fire* – they were either unconscious or murdered, leaving Harry without corroboration. Harry’s visions of Voldemort’s crimes can’t have helped, either. It’s a good thing Dumbledore believed Harry, because we can see why it was difficult for people like Fudge to comprehend a terrifying truth they wanted to deny. 

And then, with Voldemort’s return beyond doubt, Harry apparently disappears just after the Ministry of Magic has fallen. So as Harry questions the task left to him by Dumbledore, the wizarding world is left to question why Harry, their apparent saviour, has abandoned them. 

But while it was sometimes hard to know the truth, there were those who supported Harry regardless – and this support had its price.

As a Weasley, Ron was always against [Voldemort](/features/lord-voldemort), but becoming one of Harry Potter’s best friends put him firmly in the firing line. Not that he knew it beforehand, but from the moment they met on the Hogwarts Express Ron’s support was never in doubt. Well, almost never. 

Ron’s jealousy over Harry’s Triwizard selection shows how difficult living in Harry’s shadow is. His desertion in *Deathly Hallows* and the visions shown by the locket-Horcrux make this point even more forcefully. Hunting Horcruxes is hard work and Ron struggles with the lack of progress, worried about his family, unused to living without home comforts, vulnerable to bitter thoughts. When Ron leaves it’s a devastating moment, but it is an understandable one. Jealousy is an all-too-human impulse and Ron, with [his family of achievers](/collection/the-weasley-family), is particularly susceptible to it. He always swallows it in the end though because, flawed as he might be, Ron isn’t afraid to admit when he’s wrong.

As Hogwarts’ most obvious prefect, Hermione is a stickler for doing the right thing – over-preparing for exams, preventing rule-breaking, helping others get justice. From [Buckbeak](/image/concept-art-buckbeak) to [S.P.E.W.](/features/to-spew-or-not-to-spew-hermione-granger-and-the-pitfalls-of-activism), Hermione is not one to keep quiet when she can help. When it counts, her need to do what’s right outweighs her adherence to rules, which is why it’s Hermione who sets up Dumbledore’s Army. This determination for justice helps her stick by Harry even when she casts what must be one of her hardest spells – making her parents forget they have a daughter and move to Australia.

Hermione’s support for Harry is constant, but she’s not afraid to challenge him. When Harry wants to rush to the [Department of Mysteries](/features/most-mysterious-things-in-the-department-of-mysteries) it’s Hermione who tells him to check on Sirius first, pointing out Harry’s ‘saving-people-thing’. Harry doesn’t like it, but Hermione never takes the easy way out. Hermione’s no-nonsense attitude has been deeply useful on numerous occasions where Harry has let his heart rule his head.

Hagrid is arguably Harry’s most loyal supporter in that he believes in him unconditionally. But this relationship puts him in the firing line of Rita Skeeter, whose revelations about Hagrid’s parentage almost cause him to resign his post – and in *Deathly Hallows,* Hagrid is literally forced into hiding when he narrowly avoids arrest for his ‘Support Harry Potter’ party.

It’s not clear if [Neville](/features/neville-longbottom) knows how close he comes to living Harry’s destiny, but we’re in no doubt about his support – in *Order of the Phoenix* he states his belief in Voldemort’s return. From standing up to Harry, Ron and Hermione in *Philosopher’s Stone* to standing up to Voldemort in *Deathly Hallows,* Neville shows bravery on a par with Harry, and is rewarded with the sword of Godric Gryffindor. Neville’s loyalty isn't without pain, but as his efforts against the Carrows and his defiance towards Voldemort show, it’s pain he’s willing to bear.

There are many others who suffer for their support of Harry, from George’s lost ear to Luna’s imprisonment to the deaths of Sirius, Dumbledore, Mad-Eye Moody, Dobby, Lupin, Tonks, Fred, Snape and all those who fell at the [Battle of Hogwarts](/features/battle-of-hogwarts-timeline). Yet every one of them – in different ways, for different reasons – remains loyal to Harry’s cause, despite the hardships. That’s quite a legacy.

The Harry Potter series is filled with many characters who Harry – and the reader – only ever spends a short amount of time with, but who you just know have their own stories that are just as fascinating as Harry’s. Hands up if you want an Arabella Figg spin-off series, for example.

Here are some of the characters who only ever made the occasional appearance, but who were complex, interesting, or downright wicked in their own right.

## Michael Corner

Michael Corner is best known for being one of Ginny’s early boyfriends. We don’t know a whole lot about Michael’s life, but what we do know about him proves that he’s a pretty stand-up dude – despite the fact that he gets sore about Gryffindor beating Ravenclaw in the Quidditch final.

Michael joined Dumbledore’s Army in his fifth year, and by the time *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows* rolls around, the stout Ravenclaw student is one of the most involved members still remaining at Hogwarts.

When the Carrows imprison a first-year, Michael can’t stand by – and ends up being tortured after rescuing the younger student. Plus, in *Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix* (2007), he had charmingly floppy hair, which we would very much enjoy seeing more of.

## Mrs Barty Crouch

Barty Crouch Sr and Barty Crouch Jr have huge roles in *Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire*, but Bartemius Crouch Jr's mother has died before the beginning of the novel.

She participated in one of the few escapes from Azkaban in the prison’s history, and died in Azkaban so that her son could be free. Her last days were spent surrounded by soul-sucking monsters, slowly being drained of all her joy and happy memories, simply because she loved her son and wanted him to be free. Her sacrifice is huge, and we always wondered what her life was like in happier times.

## Lee Jordan

Ah, [Lee Jordan](/features/unsung-heroes-of-harry-potter-stories-lee-jordan). The tarantula-owning Quidditch-commentator extraordinaire who was just as witty as his two best friends, Fred and George.

Lee Jordan put his gift of the gab to good use during the Second Wizarding War, when he ran *Potterwatch:* a radio show devised to keep the public informed of Voldemort’s actions, and provide advice on how people could best protect themselves. While the media was being controlled by Death Eaters, Lee helped keep the rest of the wizarding community connected to each other when they needed it most. We would love to learn more about Lee's story.

## Dudley Dursley

Look, we’re not going to absolve Dudley of all the sins from his past. As a child, he was a spoiled bully who contributed to making Harry’s life at number four, Privet Drive a distinctly non-magical hell.

But given how pampered his upbringing was, it’s remarkable that Dudley grows up into a halfway decent human being at all. His rogue moment of compassion in *Deathly Hallows* shocked us to the core, and we wonder what he was like after he'd grown up a bit.

## Augusta Longbottom

While Neville’s grandmother Augusta Longbottom is initially known as a formidable figure feared by her grandson, it turns out that she’s not that scary after all.

Or rather, she is that scary... but only if you’re a punch-drunk John Dawlish who happens to underestimate the damage a more mature witch is capable of dishing out.

While Augusta Longbottom is strict with Neville, she eventually learns to be proud of her grandson and appreciate him for who he is. We are aching to know more about Augusta and the rest of the Longbottoms.

While Fred and George Weasley may have looked so similar that even their parents couldn’t tell them apart sometimes, and were so close that you rarely saw one without the other, they were still individuals. Let’s celebrate the differences between our favourite twins.

## 1. Fred was mentioned more in the Harry Potter books

[Fred Weasley is mentioned over 900 times in the books](/features/fred-and-george-weasley-infographic), almost 200 more than his brother (George gets around 731 mentions). This could be down to the fact that Fred was the slightly more outgoing of the two brothers and, in a sense, *did* more, while George waited for Fred to make the first move. It’s Fred and George, not George and Fred, after all. In interviews J.K. Rowling has said, regarding how she decided to kill Fred rather than George: ‘I always knew it was going to be Fred, and I couldn't honestly tell you why.’ But she did think people would have expected George to be the one who died, and that killing off the slightly more vocal character was a surprise.

## 2. George was the better Quidditch player

While both Fred and George were excellent Beaters, and a credit to the Gryffindor Quidditch team, there were more mentions of George hitting Bludgers than there were of Fred. George seemed to be the slightly more aggressive of the two on the [Quidditch pitch](https://www.wizardingworld.com/collections/quidditch), described once as hitting a Bludger at a player as a way of ‘vent[ing] his feelings’, and retaliating for a foul by elbowing a Slytherin Beater in the face. He even had good aim with snowballs. Aggression may, of course, be a very desirable trait in a Beater, so it could be this that gave George the edge over his brother. It was probably a healthy outlet for George, too, as off the pitch he was usually the more compassionate of the two.

## 3. Fred was usually the instigator

Whenever the Weasley twins did something particularly naughty it always seemed to be Fred who took the lead. When the twins and Ron broke Harry out of [Privet Drive](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/number-four-privet-drive) in his second year, it was Fred who was driving the flying Ford Anglia. He was usually the one behind even the smaller pranks; Fred was the one who liberated a salamander from Care of Magical Creatures so they could try to feed it a Filibuster Firework, and Fred was the one who ‘accidentally’ dropped a Ton-Tongue Toffee in front of Dudley. It was Fred who had the (unsuccessful) idea to use Ageing Potion to put their names in the Goblet of Fire, and was the first to cross the age line to try it. Fred was also the twin who talked back to [Umbridge](/writing-by-jk-rowling/dolores-umbridge "Dolores Umbridge by J.K. Rowling"), and initiated their final flight from Hogwarts.

## 4. George smoothed things over

Perhaps Fred was the bolder twin because he knew his brother was there to mitigate the damage. Fred and George were both undeniably charismatic, but George was, as it were, the public face of the Weasley twins, able to be much more subtle and diplomatic than Fred. George was the twin who made edits to their letter to Ludo Bagman, knowing that certain wording would sound accusatory, and was the one who realised why Hermione wanted to get into the school kitchens. He was even the one who remembered to get the new Common Room password from a prefect.

## 5. George was more sympathetic, but Fred was generally funnier

Fred cracked more jokes and one-liners than George did, and was often the first to imitate and mock his siblings (greeting Harry with an impression of Percy’s pomposity, and asking Ron if he minded not getting a kiss from him for being made prefect – and then challenging Ron to give him detention). George usually joined in of course, but he took his cue for what kind of jokes they were making from his brother. On the other hand, George was more compassionate when the time called for it. When Fred was teasing Ron over Scabbers’ presumed death, saying it was probably better for him to ‘snuff it quickly’, George at least tried to cheer Ron up, and reminded him he was always complaining about the rat anyway.

## 6. Fred spoke first and George explained second

When you read through the books you can see that it was almost always Fred who spoke first, usually a joke or a dramatic comment. He was the front man, the lead singer, the one who first got everyone’s attention. George was the slightly more level-headed twin who explained what his brother actually meant. Fred even passed George the task of explaining the [Marauder’s Map](/writing-by-jk-rowling/the-marauders-map "The Marauder’s Map by J.K. Rowling") to Harry when he could have done so himself. In fact, while Harry was close to both of the twins, he had longer conversations with George, who often explained events Harry might have missed, plans he and Fred had, or things Harry didn’t quite understand. Fred and George really did complement each other perfectly.

[Ronald Bilius Weasley](/features/ron-weasley "Ron Weasley") was one of the best friends a boy wizard could have: brave, loyal, funny and a priceless asset in [Harry Potter’s](/features/harry-potter "Harry Potter") fight against evil. But here’s the thing: no one’s perfect. And that especially goes for Ron, who, at his worst, had a tendency to act like a berk, a git, a prat; a petulant teenager prone to doing and saying mean, silly things like all teenagers do. Here are some are of the best – or worst – examples...

## The first – yes, first! – time he made Hermione cry 

Alright, so [Hermione](/features/hermione-granger "Hermione Granger") didn’t make the best first impression in *Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,* coming across to both Harry and Ron as a little condescending. In her defence, though, at least she had actually done some magical research before getting to [Hogwarts](/features/hogwarts "Hogwarts"). But her knowledgeable attitude hit a particular nerve in Ron during that fateful Charms class, in which she famously patronised his inept spell-casting (‘It’s [Wing-*gar*-dium Levi-*o*-sa](/features/wingardium-leviosa "Wingardium Leviosa")’). Even so, that was no excuse for Ron to retaliate with something even worse: to meanly say, ‘It’s no wonder no one can stand her,’ loud enough for Hermione to overhear, causing her to flee in tears. Not to mention following it up with, ‘So? She must’ve noticed she’s got no friends.’

It’s a good job that this all leads to Hermione running to the girls’ bathroom, in which she encounters a [troll](/features/mountain-trolls "Mountain Trolls") who is then defeated by a guilty Harry and Ron – bonding the three for life, or else Ron would just have been spiteful for nothing!

## That time he stole his dad’s car for some reason

Right, so let’s get this straight. We have two young wizards, on their way to Hogwarts, who find that they can’t get past the magical barrier at [platform nine and three-quarters](/writing-by-jk-rowling/platform-nine-and-three-quarters "Platform Nine and Three-Quarters") and have missed the [Hogwarts Express](/writing-by-jk-rowling/the-hogwarts-express "The Hogwarts Express by J.K. Rowling"). Oh no! What a disaster! What are they to do? They could, of course, find a nearby wizard and alert them to the problem. Or they could send an [owl](/features/owls "Owls") to Hogwarts to report the issue – allowing [Albus Dumbledore](/features/albus-dumbledore "Albus Dumbledore") to investigate the cause and, presumably, arrange alternative transport. 

But no. The obvious solution was to steal a [magical car](/features/the-flying-ford-anglia "Behind the scenes: creating the flying Ford Anglia"), to risk breaching the International Statute of Secrecy and to crash into [a tree](/features/whomping-willow "The Whomping Willow"). 

What a plonker.

## The time he got really jealous of Harry during the Triwizard Tournament 

Maybe it was the hormones, or maybe it was because things had started getting a bit more complicated at Hogwarts, but *Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire* was a pretty special year for fans of Ron being the worst. One of the best examples was his reaction to Harry being mysteriously chosen for the [Triwizard Tournament](/features/triwizard-tournament-timeline "The Triwizard Tournament"): Ron not only refused to believe his best friend’s protests that he had not put his name into the [Goblet of Fire](/features/the-goblet-of-fire "The Goblet of Fire"), but then proceeded to act like a petulant and jealous idiot rather than support Harry in this time of great stress. This, to a certain extent, was understandable. It can’t be easy to be constantly overshadowed by your best friend, one of the most famous wizards that ever lived. But boy, Ron did not handle that particular situation very well.

## That other time he made Hermione cry

The only reason, it seems, that Ron and Hermione had such a ‘Will they, won’t they?’ romance was because Ron kept on messing it up. A classic example of this was the [Yule Ball](/features/behind-the-scenes-at-the-yule-ball "Behind the scenes: crafting the Yule Ball") debacle, which was such a momentous example of Ron being a git that it comes in three parts: 

*__Before the Yule Ball:__* The first was Ron realising that he didn’t have a date for the Yule Ball, the school dance that celebrates the Triwizard Tournament. After classily stating that he didn’t want to go to the Ball with a ‘troll’, he further compounded his Casanova credentials by asking Hermione in a way that made it clear that she was his last resort, and then not believing her when she said that she was already going with someone else. 

*__During:__* This was when Ron insinuated that Hermione’s date, [Viktor Krum](/features/viktor-krum "Viktor Krum"), only asked her to the dance so that he could gain information on Harry’s Triwizard Tournament strategy. To be clear, what Ron was saying here was that the only reason anyone would ever ask out Hermione was to get closer to Harry. 

*__After:__* Ron, clearly jealous that Hermione went to the Yule Ball with Krum rather than him, initiated a blazing row afterwards.

## The time he pretend to be unconscious instead of just breaking up with Lavender 

As established, Ron was not exactly what you would call a ladies’ man. Yes, he was only a teenager with much to learn, but he could be pretty cruel, on occasion. One of his less-than-finer moments was his exhibitionist relationship with [Lavender Brown](/features/lavender-brown "Lavender Brown"), a girl who clearly liked Ron more than Ron liked her, which was clearly intended to make Hermione jealous. Stringing someone along under false pretences was bad enough, but then there was the fact that, when Ron had had enough, he was too cowardly to end the relationship himself; waiting for Lavender to finally do it, having grown furious with how much time he was spending with Hermione.

## And finally, the time he stormed off during a hugely important quest

It’s debatable whether this incident counts; whether Ron, under the influence of a [Horcrux](/features/the-horcruxes "The Horcruxes"), was actually in control of his actions. Either way, this was the point in which Ron grew increasingly frustrated and depressed with the slow progress of Harry’s hunt for [Lord Voldemort’s](/features/lord-voldemort "Lord Voldemort") Horcruxes; a frustration which culminated in him abandoning the mission in a huge huff. 

But, of course, he instantly regretted it – a result, presumably, of the Horcrux not amplifying his most negative emotions. And eventually he redeemed himself in style, returning to save Harry from drowning in a frozen pool, and destroying the Horcrux with the [Sword of Gryffindor](/features/the-sword-of-gryffindor "The Sword of Gryffindor"). 

Because that’s the thing about Ron. He may have been a git and a very bad practitioner of romance, but the good always managed to outweigh the bad.

## He didn’t really see socks in the Mirror of Erised

After Dumbledore told Harry he saw himself with a nice pair of socks when looking into the Mirror of Erised, Harry later reflected that he might have been lying, but that it was a rather nosy thing to ask:

After it was revealed that Dumbledore was devastated by the accidental death of his sister during a fight with Grindelwald and his brother, Aberforth, it became clear that Dumbledore’s deepest desire, and regret, involved his family. Rowling confirmed this after the final novel, revealing that when Dumbledore looks into the mirror he sees [his family](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/who-are-the-dumbledores) ‘alive, whole and happy – Ariana, Percival and Kendra all returned to him, and Aberforth reconciled to him’. ## Dumbledore is a bit of a buzz word

Dumbledore is an eighteenth-century word for bumblebee, and J.K. Rowling said she liked imagining Albus wandering around the castle humming like a bee himself, which is frankly adorable. Speaking of J.K. Rowling’s musings on the headmaster, she also revealed on Twitter that Albus is her favourite character of the series (besides Harry, of course)! 

## His friendship with Grindelwald was complex 

One of the most famous revelations about Dumbledore after the books were published was that he was actually in love with Gellert Grindelwald. J.K. Rowling said: ‘[Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/grindelwald-and-dumbledores-history-a-deep-dive), and that added to his horror when Grindelwald showed himself to be what he was… Do we say it excused Dumbledore a little more because falling in love can blind us to an extent? But he met someone as brilliant as he was, and rather like Bellatrix he was very drawn to this brilliant person, and horribly, terribly let down by him.’

## His death was foreshadowed in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

While enjoying Christmas dinner in the third book, Professor Trelawney freaked out because she believed that, should she join the table, it would mean 13 people would be seated and so the first person to stand would be the first to die. What she didn’t realise was that there were already 13 witches and wizards sat at the table, if you included Peter Pettigrew in Ron’s pocket… 

Dumbledore stood up to greet Trelawney, therefore making him the first of the 13 to get up from dinner. Sure, it could be a coincidence, or it could have been a nod about Dumbledore’s fate from J.K. Rowling. Clever!

## Dumbledore, at one point, possessed all three Deathly Hallows 

From Dumbledore’s letters to Grindelwald in *Deathly Hallows,* it is obvious that the headmaster of Hogwarts was obsessed with the idea of the [Hallows](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/what-truly-is-the-best-deathly-hallow) in his youth. It seems fitting then that he should become the only character besides Harry to have owned all three at some point in his life. After winning the Elder Wand in his famous duel with Grindelwald, he came into possession of James Potter’s cloak after borrowing it to study, and kept it safe to give to Harry when he was old enough, meaning that it was in his possession for about a decade. He also came to own the Resurrection Stone, though it came with terrible consequences when he attempted to wield its power and fatally cursed himself.

## He can be rather detached

Although the Dumbledore we know and love is always there to help with a twinkle in his eye, J.K. Rowling has admitted that Albus can be a little, well, cold. Back in 2005, she said: ‘I see him as isolated, and a few people have said to me, rightly I think, that he is detached. My sister said to me in a moment of frustration – it was when Hagrid was shut up in his house after Rita Skeeter had published that he was a half-breed – and my sister said to me, “Why didn't Dumbledore go down earlier?”… I said he really had to let Hagrid stew for a while and see if he was going to come out of this on his own, because if he had come out on his own he really would have been better.’

## Dumbledore is a huge part of J.K. Rowling’s favourite fan theory

When asked about her readers’ ideas, J.K. Rowling referred to the theory about the Peverell brothers, who, according to the legend, each received a Hallow for cheating death. The theory stands that Voldemort was the eldest brother, who was murdered after seeking power with the Elder Wand. Snape was the middle brother, who pined after a dead girl he once loved, and eventually died to join her; while Harry was considered to be the youngest brother, who greeted ‘Death as an old friend’. Since Dumbledore was the one waiting for Harry after the piece of Voldemort inside him was destroyed, one fan suggested that Dumbledore was Death in the tale. Referring to this concept after a fan asked her about her favourite theory, J.K. Rowling tweeted: ‘Dumbledore as death. It's a beautiful theory and it fits.’
