## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

## ‘…I must warn you, Harry, that the Charm might be too advanced for you. Many qualified wizards have difficulty with it.’

So Professor Lupin tells Harry before demonstrating how to cast a Patronus. This is magic far beyond that which Harry, still two years away from his Ordinary Wizarding Levels, is expected to learn.

But of course, Harry was probably never going to progressively follow the Hogwarts syllabus. He’s living through an experience that is so extraordinary it demands more of him than any other 13-year-old wizard. And Harry is extraordinary not just because he inexplicably defeated Voldemort as a baby and fought him twice as a schoolboy. He’s also remarkable because of how these experiences shaped him. 

Harry wants to cast a Patronus because of the way the Dementors – creatures Lupin describes as among the foulest to walk the Earth, sucking joy and happiness from the humans that cross their path – make him feel. While everyone suffers when they encounter a Dementor, Harry’s misery is enough to make him black out. When he falls from his broomstick during a Quidditch match, it’s clear that his is a particularly strong emotional response.

Which is understandable. Being near a Dementor forces a person to relive their worst experiences, so it’s not surprising that Harry, who hears his parents’ dying moments every time one comes near him, is affected. Except the Dementors don’t just plunge Harry into despair. In his determination to fight them, Harry discovers a talent for one of the most challenging pieces of defensive magic: the Patronus.

Harry’s Patronus lessons are long and tiring. Each time he faces the Boggart-Dementor, he hears his mother being murdered and his father’s attempts to save his wife and son. Whilst these are horrifically traumatic events, for Harry they are also a rare opportunity to hear his parents’ voices. His lingering desire to hear them speak makes it even harder to conjure a Patronus, something Lupin describes as:

## ‘…a kind of positive force, a projection of the very things that the Dementor feeds upon – hope, happiness, the desire to survive…’

In order to cast a corporeal Patronus – that is, a solid one that can charge down Dementors – you have to think of a happy memory and shout ‘Expecto Patronum.’ Harry manages to create something approaching a Patronus pretty quickly, but it’s an indistinct attempt. Yet he’s not deterred. Exhausted and half-wanting to hear his parents again, Harry is still determined to master it, returning again and again to practice with the Boggart-Dementor. 

This determination is something Harry has shown before. In *Philosopher’s Stone*, he set out to get to the Stone before anyone else, joined by Hermione and Ron only after he held forth about the importance of fighting Voldemort. In his motivation to fight the Dementors, he also shows a long-standing emotional resilience.

Harry acknowledges his desire to hear his parents even despite the impact it has on him – he cries when he hears his father for the first time. In *Philosopher’s Stone*, Dumbledore said to Harry of his mother:

## ‘… to have been loved so deeply, even though the person who loved us is gone, will give us some protection for ever. It is in your very skin.’

In listening to his parents’ final moments, Harry begins to truly engage with their sacrifice and his loss. But he is also hearing first-hand evidence of their love for him, a love he has previously only been told about. That in itself becomes a motivation – first for facing the Dementors, but later, for defeating them. Because while Harry grasps at the chance to hear his parents’ voices, he also acknowledges it’s a desire that won’t help him. 

> ‘They’re dead,’ he told himself sternly. ‘They’re dead, and listening to echoes of them won’t bring them back.’

Whether it’s deliberate or not, Harry’s advice to himself echoes Dumbledore’s words after Harry became fixated on seeing his family in the Mirror of Erised:

Harry’s desire to hear his parents is a completely natural human response, one that is even more understandable when you consider he’s 13 years old and has lived without those voices since he was a small child. On the other hand, in acknowledging that giving in to such a desire might hold him back, Harry shows a wisdom beyond his years.

Harry might have a talent for defensive magic – he’s already beaten Voldemort, after all – but it’s this that really enables him to develop his talents. Holding on to a good memory in the face of overwhelming despair is a challenge Lupin implies is beyond many adults, but it’s a challenge Harry’s life has equipped him to face. Neglect hasn’t made him bitter – on the contrary, since coming to Hogwarts, Harry has taken every opportunity for enjoyment and has largely refused to dwell on his early childhood and life with the Dursleys. Yet while all the good memories he uses to cast his Patronus are drawn from his wizarding years, having the strength to cast the spell even in the most desperate circumstances – as when he produces a corporeal Patronus after seeing what he thinks is his father – is a consequence of his early life and his determination not to give in to despair.

And because there is often more than one motivation for success, defeating despair wasn’t Harry’s only reason for learning how to cast a Patronus. He was also driven by other very natural responses – embarrassment, after falling from his broom, and ambition, because he really wants to win the Quidditch Cup. What is clear, though, is that Harry’s ability to cast a Patronus requires more than talent. It demands a great deal of determination and a huge amount of emotional strength.

But with [Dolores Umbridge](/features/dolores-umbridge "Dolores Umbridge") making a mockery of Defence Against the Dark Arts lessons by cutting the practical element, notably at a time of increased threat from [He Who Must Not Be Named](/features/lord-voldemort "Lord Voldemort"), resistance simply had to be mounted. [Albus Dumbledore](/features/albus-dumbledore "Albus Dumbledore") humbly admitted that Harry Potter was a better man than he was at a similar age. Referring to the dark period in the Hogwarts Headmaster’s youth when he entertained the notion of Muggle subjugation alongside [Gellert Grindelwald](/features/gellert-grindelwald "Gellert Grindelwald"), Dumbledore illustrated the sharp contrast with young Potter, who never sought notoriety or power in any form – and, indeed, was often made to feel intensely uncomfortable by both. 

Harry’s initial reluctance to lead what became Dumbledore’s Army, in spite of Hermione’s best efforts to convince him, didn’t last longer than a fortnight. Yet even so, the prospect of even chairing the initial meeting at the [Hog’s Head](/features/behind-the-scenes-the-hogs-head "Behind the scenes: The Hog’s Head") was so horrifying Hermione had to sneakily tell him only a couple of students were likely to show up. 

When, inevitably, a good many students showed up, the public airing of his achievements (such as, but not limited to, producing a corporeal [Patronus](/features/expecto-patronum "Expecto Patronum"), defeating the [Basilisk](/features/basilisks "Basilisks") and obtaining the [Philosopher’s Stone](/features/philosophers-stone "The Philosopher’s Stone")) helped convince the group to follow him. And, more importantly, convinced him that he was ready – and able – to lead.

Previously meek, clumsy [Neville Longbottom](/features/neville-longbottom "Neville Longbottom") flourished under Harry’s stewardship of Dumbledore’s Army, so much so that Neville himself took over as interim leader when Harry, Ron and Hermione were off hunting [Horcruxes](/features/the-horcruxes "The Horcruxes"). With a bit of encouragement from Harry, it’s amazing to see how much Neville flourished.

It wasn’t all plain sailing, however. [Seamus Finnigan](/features/seamus-finnigan "Seamus Finnigan"), somewhat influenced by his ‘mam’, initially scorned Harry following the *Daily Prophet’s* excoriating take-down of him. When a more measured appraisal was published in *The Quibbler,* Seamus saw the error of his ways and was welcomed by Harry as a new recruit for the Army. A lesser master would’ve sent him packing, but exploring how and why people change their mind is a much-underrated quality of fine leadership.

Worse still was [Zacharias Smith](/features/zacharias-smith "Zacharias Smith"): openly hostile at the inaugural meeting at the Hog’s Head, the last to sign up, and who only half-heartedly voted along with the rest of the group to elect Harry leader. He dismissed Harry when training sessions commenced, making clear his belief that the [Disarming Charm](/features/disarming-charm "Expelliarmus") would look feeble and pointless in the face of the Dark Lord. Harry could have reacted in any number of ways – rage or mockery would’ve been entirely appropriate and justified. But no, instead Harry behaved like a true leader, refuted Zacharias in a soft voice and offered him the chance to make his excuses and leave. Naturally, the mouthy Hufflepuff stayed mutely on the spot, and in doing so underlined Harry’s authority before the group.

You all remember that Harry went through his ‘yelling phase’ during *Order of the Phoenix.* Frustrated at being locked away at [the Dursleys’](/collection/the-dursley "The Dursley Family") without information during the summer, Harry couldn’t contain his anger for the world after Lord Voldemort had returned. And once he started, he couldn’t stop himself, his rage coming out in bursts all throughout the year. But his time with Dumbledore’s Army became a source of great joy to him, especially when he was banned from his beloved Quidditch by Dolores Umbridge. He first kissed [Cho Chang](/features/cho-chang "Cho Chang") after one meeting, and regular Army training sessions surely inspired a respect for discipline and practice that must have been key to his future life as an Auror.  

It also served to launder his reputation, so sullied by [Rita Skeeter](/features/rita-skeeter "Rita Skeeter") and the *Daily Prophet.* As soon as the Army was founded – with considerable credit to Hermione Granger – he won the respect of fellow students who may never otherwise have had the opportunity to experience Harry’s many fine qualities up close. 

Harry’s confidence, people skills and faith in himself were all reinforced by his decision to take the reins of resistance and lead Dumbledore’s Army. And he was all the better character for it.

Although he’s rarely in the thick of the action, Ernie Macmillan definitely makes an impression. Like a pampered little prince holding court over his nobles, it’s clear from the very first moment we meet him that Ernie enjoys being the centre of attention.  

The scion of an old wizarding family, Ernie sees himself as a voice of authority among his peers, and revels in his position as their unofficial leader. Keen to impress, Ernie likes to be in the know, which means he can be a bit of a gossip; despite his often high-and-mighty attitude, he’s not above passing on whispers overheard in the corridors of the castle, and is surprisingly suggestible. 

He might be highly intelligent and academically bright, but his need to be right means he frequently makes snap judgements and draws clumsy conclusions – leaping from claiming Harry was Slytherin’s heir, to suspecting Draco immediately after he realised Harry was innocent. Having said that, he’s also very honest – he might talk behind your back, but he’ll readily admit to it and even confront you with his ‘evidence’. 

Of course, he’ll be quite theatrical about it, as Ernie likes to keep his audience enthralled, showing off an unexpected flair for the dramatic. He thoroughly enjoys being looked up to, and makes the most of any time in the spotlight by mysteriously lowering his voice for effect or speaking in loud whispers.

The problem is, Ernie usually believes what he’s saying to be true, and he can be very passionate about his opinions, especially when he thinks someone’s up to no good. He’s not shy about sharing his thoughts – if his friends aren’t around, he’ll give his two penny’s worth to anyone in earshot, whether they asked for it or not – and is always supremely confident. This can make him seem like a bit of a smug know-it-all but Ernie is actually very genuine; one of his most admirable qualities is that he can always admit when he was wrong.

His penchant for tittle-tattle means he has been known to offend (usually Harry!) but he doesn’t have a problem owning up to poor judgement; he’ll willingly apologise if he made a mistake. Ernie does tend to become quite pompous and formal when he’s uncomfortable, making him appear a little haughty – there’s definitely something of the Percy Weasley about him!

Like Percy, Ernie is also very serious about his reputation and responsibilities as prefect, which puts him in a quandary when he has to sign a register to join the D.A. He likes the idea of being rebellious but struggles when it comes to actually committing; eventually his dissatisfaction with Umbridge’s censorship wins out. 

It’s not surprising, as Ernie takes a lot of pride in his academic achievements. He can get quite competitive about it; when studying for his O.W.L.s he drove his fellow students bonkers with incessant bragging and hourly updates about how much revision he was cramming in. Irritating, yes, but his behaviour reveals his insecurities – he needs to feel like he’s doing more than everyone else. In fact, he’s probably one of the few people who would have actually appreciated a bossy homework planner from Hermione!

He may have his annoying moments but Ernie’s a good friend. Like most Hufflepuffs, he’s fiercely loyal and protective. He comes from a pure-blood line but shows no prejudice, choosing Muggle Studies as one of his options and becoming best friends with Muggle-born Justin Finch-Fletchley. He’s rarely seen without him or Hannah Abbott in tow and when he mistakenly believes Justin is the next target of Harry and Slytherin’s monster, he does all he can to keep him safe. 

One of the interesting things about Ernie is that for all his hoity-toity nonsense spouting, he’s actually very genuine and not particularly good at keeping up the bravado. His formality doesn’t extend to his true feelings; it’s very outwardly apparent when Ernie’s afraid, but he’s also incredibly brave, never hiding away from a confrontation. Whether that means standing up to ‘Slytherin’s heir’ or sticking around to fight in the Battle of Hogwarts, Ernie doesn’t hide away from a difficult situation even if he’s daunted by the prospect.

He’s a firm believer in doing the right thing although he often gets a bit carried away despite his best (albeit misguided) intentions. Supporting Cedric Diggory with a ‘Potter Stinks’ badge to show his outrage at Harry’s ‘illegal’ Triwizard Tournament entry is no exception. But Ernie also stepped up to help Harry more than once, showing his true mettle when it came to it.

It’s very telling that Ernie’s Patronus is a boar – he can be notoriously pig-headed when he’s made his mind up about something and is a powerful presence among his fellow students who tends to naturally dominate others.

Ernie is a complex mix of bluster and kindness but he does Hufflepuff house proud – despite his foibles, you’d definitely want him on your side. If nothing else, he tells a blooming good story.

The first time we hear of the Marauders – or at least, the first time we hear the boys that were the Marauders described as such – is when Fred and George gift Harry their spectacular map. It’s a magical work of art, with its detailed illustrations of Hogwarts and microscopic dots that represent actual people. 

But the Marauders did more than induct Harry into their world of mischief – we learned some valuable lessons from Messrs Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs…

## Hogwarts has secret passageways

…starting, of course, with the seven hidden passages on the Marauder’s Map. With most of them leading into Hogsmeade, the map becomes invaluable to Harry as a means to join his fellow third-years on their weekend trips. Without the Marauder’s Map Harry wouldn’t have access to Zonko’s or Honeydukes or the Three Broomsticks – not to mention the help it gave Fred and George. It’s a piece of mischief-making genius.

## How to cast a Patronus

When Harry starts Anti-Dementor lessons with Lupin, he doesn't know his teacher is actually Moony, or that Lupin is a werewolf. He does, however, know Lupin is the best Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher he’s ever had, as demonstrated when he shows Harry how to cast a Patronus. This is advanced magic. It takes a lot of practice, chocolate and coming to terms with hearing his parents’ voices, but Harry gets it eventually, thanks to Lupin’s patience.

## Snape had troubled schooldays

When Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs insult Snape via the medium of parchment, it’s obvious his history with the Marauders is not a positive one. The depth of Snape’s animosity is revealed when he discovers Sirius, aka Padfoot, in the Shrieking Shack. Snape is so desperate for vengeance for the Marauders’ nasty schoolboy pranks that he ties up Lupin, threatens Sirius with the Dementor’s Kiss, and ends up knocked out by the collective force of Harry, Ron and Hermione.

## Not all Animagi are registered

The Ministry of Magic keeps tabs on Animagi – wizards that can turn into animals – and the process of becoming an Animagus is extremely long and difficult. That much we know from Hermione, who is nothing if not thorough. But, Lupin tells us, it is possible to become an Animagus without the Ministry knowing, although perhaps not advisable. It took three years for Padfoot (Sirius), Prongs (James) and Wormtail (Peter Pettigrew) to become Animagi and while it may have made for a better school experience for Lupin, the dangers are clear when you consider the actions of unregistered Animagus Peter Pettigrew.

## The story behind the Shrieking Shack 

Lupin’s monthly transformations happened in the Hogsmeade building christened the Shrieking Shack. Becoming a werewolf was so painful and violent for Lupin, shut away so he couldn’t hurt anyone, that he would howl and scream. The noise was loud enough that those who heard it put it down to violent spirits, and so the legend of the haunted Shrieking Shack was born.

## What really happened when Harry’s parents died

When Harry discovers his parents were murdered after their Secret-Keeper betrayed them to Voldemort, he – like those around him – believes the culprit is his father’s old friend Sirius. But in the Shrieking Shack he learns it was Peter Pettigrew. The Potters chose Peter as their Secret-Keeper and in return he sold them to Voldemort. Then, when Voldemort was defeated, Peter faked his own death, landed Sirius in Azkaban, transformed into a rat and hid in the sewers. What a guy.

## The truth about Scabbers

Ron’s family rat, Scabbers, was always a bit of a puzzle. Too old to be a normal rat but showing no magical signs, his only moment of glory was biting Goyle’s hand onboard the Hogwarts Express. Not a particularly illustrious career for a wizarding pet. On the other hand, Hermione’s Crookshanks is suspicious of Scabbers from the start and is proved completely right when it turns out Scabbers is actually the traitorous Pettigrew.

## How to escape from Azkaban 

That Sirius managed to escape the supposedly impenetrable Azkaban is such a feat even the Muggle Prime Minister has to be informed. Yet when Sirius tells Hermione how he did it, he’s not sure – although being an Animagus was essential. If you want to slip past a Dementor, it seems, you just need to have an obsessional thought that is neither happy or sad and the ability to turn into an animal with less complex emotions. Easy. 

## What Sirius is to Harry

The best thing we learn from the Marauders is how close they were (well, okay, not Pettigrew) and that Sirius – best man at the Potters’ wedding – is Harry’s godfather. There is one bright, brilliant moment when it seems Harry might be able to live with a sort-of family member who actually likes him. It’s not to be, sadly, but at least Harry gains someone who cares.

## It has Irish roots…

First established as a magical home-school in the early 1600s, Ilvermorny was named for the cottage where its co-founder, Isolt Sayre, spent her early childhood in County Kerry.

Although not a happy childhood – her [pure-blood](/writing-by-jk-rowling/pure-blood "Pure-Blood by J.K. Rowling") obsessed Aunt Gormlaith kidnapped Isolt after murdering her pro-Muggle mother and father – her early years, at least, were idyllic. After travelling to America, Isolt chose to remember them in numerous ways. The name Ilvermorny was one, calling her Pukwudgie companion after her father was another, and Ilvermorny’s symbol – the Gordian Knot – was a third. Isolt wove the Knot, based on an old brooch of her mothers’, into both Ilvermorny’s Sorting Ceremony and the clasp that fastens students’ robes. 

## …but is hidden away in Massachusetts

Ilvermorny began its transformation from home to school when Isolt – inspired by Hogwarts – started to teach her adopted sons, Webster and Chadwick Boot. She and her husband, James Steward, also created wands for their charges. Steadily their family lessons expanded as magical children gravitated towards the little house.

Gradually the building grew in size as the school grew in reputation. Over time, it became a castle with dormitories, teachers and other staff, hidden at the top of Mount Greylock by swirling mists and multiple enchantments. Within a few decades, North America had its answer to Hogwarts.

## It was co-founded by a No-Maj…

Isolt’s husband James was instrumental in Ilvermorny’s set-up. He designed their house, helped make the cottage a home and [carved the wands](/writing-by-jk-rowling/wand-woods "Wand Woods by J.K. Rowling") used by his adopted sons and the other students taught by Isolt.

And yet James Steward was a No-Maj – a Muggle stonemason from England who had travelled to America alongside the Boot family. His lack of magic hadn’t stopped James befriending the Boots, and it didn’t stop [him and Isolt from falling in love](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/everything-a-muggle-should-remember-when-dating-a-witch-or-wizard) – or founding a school together.

Unusual as it is to have a wizarding school co-founded by a No-Maj, these unique beginnings helped foster Ilvermorny’s reputation as one of the magical world’s most democratic schools. 

## …And a witch descended from Salazar Slytherin

This is even more unusual given Isolt’s background. Descended from Hogwarts founder and pure-blood obsessive Salazar Slytherin, some of Isolt’s family were so anti-Muggle they were prepared to commit terrible crimes to keep their wizarding blood pure. Her Aunt Gormlaith killed Isolt’s parents and, on hearing that Isolt had married Muggle James, journeyed to America intending to kill them, too.

But although Isolt shared her family’s talent for [Parseltongue](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/everything-you-didnt-know-about-parseltongue) – and had stolen her aunt’s wand, which (unbeknown to her) was Slytherin’s own wand – she chose a different path. Isolt’s ability to speak to snakes allowed her to converse with the Horned Serpent that lived near their cottage. The Horned Serpent enabled the creation of her [sons’ wands](/writing-by-jk-rowling/wand-cores "Wand Cores by J.K. Rowling"), and those wands helped save their lives when Gormlaith arrived in Mount Greylock.

## Like Hogwarts, Ilvermorny has four houses too

Isolt was brought up on stories of Hogwarts, and Gormlaith’s disdain did nothing to dampen Isolt’s fascination. Later, she told them to her adopted sons and they, too, became enamoured of a magical school with four competing houses.

So it was that Ilvermorny’s four founders – Isolt, James and their first students, Webster and Chadwick – divided their own school. Each named a house after their favourite magical creature: Horned Serpent (Isolt), Wampus (Webster), Thunderbird (Chadwick) and Pukwudgie (James). As J.K. Rowling explains:

‘It is sometimes said of the Ilvermorny houses that they represent the whole witch or wizard: the mind is represented by Horned Serpent; the body, Wampus; the heart, Pukwudgie and the soul, Thunderbird. Others say that Horned Serpent favours scholars, Wampus, warriors, Pukwudgie, healers and Thunderbird, adventurers.’

## The Sorting Ceremony is just as epic as Hogwarts

J.K. Rowling tells us:

‘…one by one, students are called to stand on the symbol of the Gordian Knot set into the middle of the stone floor. In silence the school then waits for the enchanted carvings to react. If the Horned Serpent wants the student, the crystal set into its forehead will light up. If the Wampus wants the student, it roars. The Thunderbird signifies its approval by beating its wings, and the Pukwudgie will raise its arrow into the air.

Should more than one carving signify its wish to include the student in its house, the choice rests with the student.’

## Students get their wands a bit later on

After finding out their house, Ilvermorny’s first years are shown into the hall where they acquire their wands. 

Hogwarts’ first years might purchase theirs before they start school, but in America the situation is different because of the country’s complex history. Until 1965, [Rappaport’s Law](/writing-by-jk-rowling/rappaports-law-en "Rappaport's Law by J.K. Rowling") stated that no child was allowed a wand until they came to school. Although since repealed, the tradition remains that the first wave of a wand happens in that school hall. 

## It has an iconic song

Ilvermorny’s song is less irreverent than Hogwarts’ 'Hoggy Warty Hogwarts', speaking as it does of the school’s history. Shown in a deleted scene from *Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,* [the song was co-written by J.K. Rowling and Alison Sudol](/news/alison-sudol-co-wrote-fantastic-beasts-ilvermorny-school-song-with-jk-rowling), who plays Queenie. It opens with the lyrics:

## It’s staffed by Pukwudgies

Hogwarts has Filch. Ilvermorny has Pukwudgies. This tradition stems from Isolt’s first companion in America: a bad-tempered Pukwudgie she saved from disembowelment by a Hidebehind. Pukwudgies are fiercely independent, and Isolt’s was humiliated by being in her debt. He also refused to tell her his name, so Isolt named him for her father, William. Although William eventually left rather than care for the Boot boys, when the family was attacked by Gormlaith it was he who saved them. 

Upon discovering James had named his Ilvermorny house for him, William decided to stay – and he and his family became Ilvermorny’s first providers of security and maintenance. A number of Pukwudgies continue to work at the school which is partly named for their kind.

Before Fred and George Weasley made the wise decision to give Ron a copy of *Twelve Fail-Safe Ways to Charm Witches*, well… let’s just say that our favourite redheaded chess champ wasn’t the best at wooing the ladies. Or, to be more specific, the one lady he was actually after – Hermione Granger. And before Ron realised that the best thing that could ever happen to him was right in front of him, tirelessly helping him with his homework, he could be downright mean to poor old Hermione.

Then there was Viktor Krum. Hermione was given a reprise from being constantly teased by the clueless Gryffindor and given a taste of romance from someone who actually deserved her… and we loved every moment of it. 

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s a big claim but we’re sticking by it: here’s exactly why Viktor Krum and Hermione Jean Granger were meant to be together. 

## He was a man of few words – but they were all the right ones

Viktor Krum was about as chatty as a Dementor, but he still managed to make Hermione feel special, unlike half of the highly insensitive and sometimes just plain rude things Ron came out with. In fact, Hermione pointed out exactly how Viktor had asked her out to the Yule Ball after it was mentioned that he was constantly in the library, and it was frankly perfect:

## He did some impressive magic to save her 

We don’t think we’re being too melodramatic when we say that Viktor Krum risked his hawkish good looks, perhaps forever, to save Hermione’s life by turning himself part-shark. If you think about it, he basically tried to become an Animagus with just a few short months of practice. It took the Marauders a few *years* before they could all turn themselves into animals!

Sure, he didn’t quite manage it properly, but we’re still seriously impressed with the effort it must have taken to give himself that shark head for the second task. Can you imagine Ron trying that feat? Ron, who caused a dinner plate to mutate into a large mushroom for his O.W.L.s Transfiguration exam? *Shudder*.

## Viktor wasn’t the jealous type 

At Bill and Fleur’s wedding, Viktor and Hermione met each other again for the first time since the year of the Triwizard Tournament. Although Viktor was clearly very much into Hermione, telling her (without the help of a self-help book) that she looked ‘vunderful’, he immediately backed off when Harry told him that she and Ron were ‘sort of’ together. Meanwhile, one of Ron’s biggest flaws was his streak of jealousy, and he was simply rude to a perfectly respectful Viktor at the wedding. Frankly, we can’t imagine that Hermione and Viktor’s pen friendship was kept up after she and the green-eyed Ron-ster started going out. 

## Viktor helped Hermione to chill 

Hermione had many, many wonderful qualities, but ‘switching off’ had never really been one of them. Whether it was homework, securing freedom for all house-elves or Horcrux hunting, there was always something on Hermione’s mind. But when she was with Viktor she actually let herself just enjoy the moment, something we’re not sure we can say she ever really did before. In turn, she helped Krum open up and be a little less grumpy (her words, not ours!). 

> For once, Hermione didn’t seem to be thinking about S.P.E.W. She was deep in talk with Viktor Krum, and hardly seemed to notice what she was eating. 
It now occurred to Harry that he had never actually heard Krum speak before, but he was certainly talking now, and very enthusiastically at that.
