## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

According to the *Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them* textbook, dragons are both ‘the most famous of all magical beasts’, and also one of the most difficult to hide.

[Norbert](/features/norbert), the dragon hatched from an egg by Hagrid in *Philosopher’s Stone*, was certainly that. Not that Hagrid was worried, even with Norbert breathing smoke around his wooden hut. But it’s true that a dragon can’t be hidden for long, and when Draco Malfoy spotted Norbert, Hagrid conceded that he might be better off elsewhere.

## History

It’s also true that dragons are among the most famous magical beasts. They’re certainly one of the most established, with a history stretching back to Ancient Greece. The first mention of the word dragon is in the Ancient Greek text *The Iliad*, written around 762BC. Incidentally the Greek word drákōn is also, of course, the root of a certain Mr Malfoy’s first name.

There were four types of dragon-like creatures in early Greek mythology – the giant, deadly, serpentine Dracones; the Cetea, also known as a Sea Monster; the fire-breathing Chimaera, a hybrid of serpent, lion and goat; and the she-monster Dracaenae, which had the upper body of a nymph and the lower body of a sea dragon.

## Appearance

The very word ‘drákōn’ also has various literal interpretations – it could mean a serpent of huge size or a water snake. In cultural terms, this has led to dragons being imagined differently in Western countries as compared to those in South and East Asia.

Something similar to the early Greeks’ wingless, snake-like Dracones remains the main visual interpretation of the Chinese dragon. The legendary dragons of Western countries tend to have wings and breathe fire, more like the Chimaera, although Chimaeras are now generally recognised as mythical beasts in their own right (and consequently have their own entry in the *Fantastic Beasts* textbook).

The dragons of Chinese myth have up to four legs but usually no more, whereas in early European stories dragons often sported six legs. In both cultures, dragons tend to be scaly and reptilian, with long, forked tails.

## Habitat

The *Fantastic Beasts* textbook lists ten species of dragon, each living in a different location, from the valleys of New Zealand to the mountains of Wales, and in countries as diverse as Peru, Sweden and China. Similarly, dragons of legend have a range of habitats, including palaces under the sea, remote mountains and caves.

And while gigantic fire-breathing dragons are obviously not real, there is a large member of the lizard family called the Komodo dragon. This creature – probably the closest thing the natural world has to the dragons of myth – lives on the islands of Indonesia.

## Nature

In *Philosopher’s Stone*, Ron told Harry how impossible it was to domesticate a dragon:

> ‘…anyway, you can’t tame dragons, it’s dangerous. You should see the burns Charlie’s got off wild ones in Romania.’

Sure enough, with Norbert growing three times in length within a week, it wasn’t long before he became impossible to manage, biting Ron on the hand and Hagrid on the leg. *Fantastic Beasts* explains that females are generally larger and more aggressive than their male counterparts, so maybe it wasn’t surprising when Charlie Weasley later revealed that Norbert was actually a girl.

The dragons of myth are equally difficult to train, being fearsome, terrifying creatures with no interest in working with humans.

## Good or evil?

Although similar in appearance, in Chinese myths, dragons were often more benevolent than their Western counterparts. Chinese dragons are a symbol of good fortune, representing a path to enlightenment.

For a time this interpretation existed alongside the more fearful reputation of the dragons of early Europe. Gradually, evil dragons came to dominate Western culture and are now typically seen as symbolic of darkness and malevolence. Certainly, none of the dragons of the wizarding world seemed to bring their owners much good fortune, from Norbert to the Hungarian Horntail of *Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.*

## Famous dragons

The dangerous reputation of these creatures dominates the earliest stories about them. From England’s patron saint, George, to the dragons in *Beowulf* and the tales of King Arthur, these are fearsome creatures that exist to be slain.

Because despite Hagrid’s hopes, having a friendly relationship with a dragon is rare. After all, the Hogwarts school motto isn’t ‘draco dormiens nunquam titillandus’ – or ‘never tickle a sleeping dragon’ – for nothing.

The Ancient Egyptians believed gold to be divine and indestructible. In modern folklore, it is the prized possession of every dragon. In its purest form, gold means truth and honesty, but also greed, control, shallow needs and extravagance. In Harry Potter, the theme of gold runs deep, right down to the wizarding currency, and the glimmer of a Golden Snitch.

## Gringotts bank

From the Philosopher’s Stone to the Hufflepuff Cup, Gringotts is where the mysteries are secreted away, and we’d wager that there’s quite a lot of gold locked in some of those vaults. The bank even has a dragon, which is fitting. In Greek mythology, dragons were notorious as protectors of the precious metal. 

Ladon was a dragon-type creature who guarded golden apples, for example. There was also the tale of the Golden Fleece, a precious item famously sought after by Jason and the Argonauts. And yes, you’ve guessed it: it was guarded by a big, unsleeping dragon.

In every mention of Gringotts, there is the most obvious interpretation of gold — currency, wealth and success. Of course, as with anything, excess brings darkness. In the gold-filled hallways of Gringotts the goblins themselves are obsessed with gold and will go to any lengths to protect it. This leads to a pretty hostile environment, including cruelty to the dragon who guards the extra top security vaults.

At the beginning of Harry’s journey, Gringotts doors are opened by goblins wearing uniforms of scarlet and gold, and at the end, the scarlet and gold is repeated in a far more macabre fashion in the aftermath of Voldemort’s rage. Griphook, having chosen greed and the Sword of Gryffindor, meets his unpleasant fate during the Gringotts slaughter. Here the gold littering the floors is a warning — always in moderation, never with greed.

## The Philosopher’s Stone

Gold is as closely linked to the legend of the Philosopher’s Stone as it is to Gringotts bank. One myth surrounding the Philosopher’s Stone was its ability to turn mundane metals into gold. It was the ultimate get-rich-quick scheme. And the fact that the stone can be used to extend a person’s life too is, in many ways, a golden opportunity, as Nicolas Flamel discovered.

## The greed of gold

From Gringotts bank to Rita Skeeter’s three golden teeth, the dark side of gold is sprinkled all over the wizarding world. When we first meet Dudley Dursley he is greedily tearing the wrapping paper off a gold watch while demanding more presents, and we instantly know the kind of person he is going to be.

The weak and greedy side of the pursuit of gold is also quickly assigned to none other than Professor Gilderoy Lockhart and his golden hair. In fact, Gilderoy is always doing something with a little gold flash, like his turquoise hat with gold trim, the little gold card he sent Hermione, and the unforgettably surly 'Cupids' with gold wings.

When it comes to magical devices that can lead to a witch or wizard’s downfall, gold marks the spot. The Mirror of Erised is a great example — it is surrounded by gold lettering and it takes Dumbledore’s wisdom to guide Harry away from its tempting depths. And the golden statues of wizards and witches in the entrance hall to the Ministry of Magic are a testament to the hubris and vanity of the wizarding world.

Then, of course, there is Voldemort and his greed. Greed for control, life and prestige. The gold Slytherin locket becomes one of his first Horcruxes and is soon followed by the Hufflepuff Cup, the heavy gold ring that belongs to Marvolo Gaunt and the Ravenclaw diadem.

## The wisdom of gold

In Egyptian lore, gold is associated with the pharaoh, a word that translates to mean ‘ruler’ or ‘great house’. From the first time we meet Dumbledore he is associated with these golden qualities — his gold pocket watch, the large golden chair at Hogwarts, the long thread of gold issuing from his wand the first time we see him use it — every aspect points to someone who is strong, wise and true to his beliefs. Dumbledore is always associated with gold, but in a way which emphasises his strength of character, unending patience and complete focus on his goal to help Harry defeat Voldemort.

## Brilliant flashes of gold

Gold has such a strong presence in the wizarding world. Think of Quidditch, with its golden hoops and Golden Snitch — if ever there was a sport that captured Harry’s heart, this was it. It is the warm and inviting side of gold that inspires hope. It is also at the Quidditch World Cup where we first encounter leprechaun gold, and this fake gold sets the tone for the theme that dominates *Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire*.

The goblet is gold, the Age Line preventing underage wizards from entering is gold, the wands tested for the competition emit gold sparks, there’s the golden egg and, finally, the ill-fated Triwizard Cup, which emits golden light. Another symbolic meaning of gold is the aspiration to greatness — the hunt for treasure can be found throughout Greek mythology and each story had a mythical meaning and a moral. The Triwizard Cup is as much a hero’s search for answers as it is a magical competition.

In the potion world, gold plays an important role too. Harry’s Polyjuice Potion turns to gold — once again reinforcing the heroic leadership qualities he possesses — and the bottle of Felix Felicis he wins is also a stunning golden colour. It is thanks to this little bottle that he gets essential information from Professor Slughorn about Voldemort’s Horcruxes.

Then there is Hogwarts. A place of learning and magic, of mysteries and taught mythologies, and the world where Harry transforms from orphan to hero. At the start we are introduced to its golden associations through plates and goblets, and the gold and scarlet colours of Gryffindor. It is also notable that gold is associated with the sharing of wisdom and knowledge — it’s a perfect colour for the place where witches and wizards learn their trade.

Interestingly, scarlet and gold are the colours of Gringotts Bank, Gryffindor and Fawkes the phoenix. Even the colour of the enchanted sky in the Great Hall is a 'red-glow burst' as Harry faces Voldemort for the last time.

It’s not just Fred and George who had superb comic timing in the wizarding world – quite a few characters had us rolling in the aisles on many an occasion. Should these characters give up the magic game, here are our top contenders to make a splash on the comedy circuit… 

## Severus Snape 

Snape's black humour would almost certainly make him the perfect comedian to hit the underground comedy clubs. He may be seen as the Hogwarts killjoy, but his deadpan delivery of witticisms actually has the most perfect comic timing in both the books and the films. He would definitely go down well with an audience (particularly if said audience were made up of Slytherins, who generally seem to think the Potions professor is an absolute riot).

## Ron Weasley 

Ron, never the greatest wizard of the wizarding world, could at least laugh about it. In fact, Ron’s comic timing is perfection. His down-to-earth sense of humour, ability to be self-deprecating and cold takedowns of his peers would be perfectly suited for any panel show. Give it a few months and he'd soon have the most successful post-Hogwarts career out of all of his siblings, guaranteed.

## Albus Dumbledore 

It would be so easy to imagine Dumbledore stumbling across a comedy festival the way he stumbled upon the room of chamber pots at Hogwarts, and improvising one hilarious situation after the other. His distinct, irresistible charm, twinkling eyes and ability to come out with bizarre one-liners would make him an immediate favourite on the festival circuit, even if people wouldn’t be entirely sure what he’s talking about half the time.

## Fred and George Weasley 

It’s an obvious choice, but the fact remains: Fred and George will always be the classic Hogwarts double-act. The fact that the pair were twins was certainly not lost on them, and they used that for added comic relief whenever they could. But Fred and George were just naturally very funny people, and when they weren’t pulling pranks or relying on more physical comedy (Canary Cream, anyone?) their one-liners, sarcasm, and takedowns of their own siblings were all absolute gold too. No wonder Harry gave them a big sack of money to start a joke shop – what would the wizarding world do without Fred and George in the times of Lord Voldemort?

## Nymphadora Tonks 

Tonks's comedy act would appeal to her strengths and be based around her impressions of other people. Using her awesome ability as a Metamorphmagus (and her ability to chatter away about anything), Tonks would be an instant hit. Sure, it’s cheating somewhat, but a pig snout is always a riot.

## Harry Potter

Harry might not be known first and foremost for his quick wit, but the Chosen One had his moments. And because Harry was usually playing the noble hero card, his one-liners were pretty unexpected when they did come along. It looks like he inherited a healthy amount of that James Potter brand of cheekiness.

## Professor McGonagall 

You don’t have to wear a spinning bowtie like Peeves to be a comedian; sometimes playing it straight is actually funnier. McGonagall’s serious attitude to the wonderful and ridiculous wizarding world was often rather amusing, albeit unintentionally. McGonagall’s withering reactions to Lee Jordan’s unprofessional Quidditch commentaries were a particular joy – the pair could have been a double act. And if Lee Jordan was busy, her blunt retorts to his stand-in, Luna Lovegood, were even better.

## Albus Dumbledore

According to his Chocolate Frog card, Albus Dumbledore – Hogwarts Headmaster and Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards, among other accolades – is ‘the greatest wizard of modern times’. But he wears his fame lightly. Apart from the occasional word of wisdom, Dumbledore likes to leave the lessons to his staff and trusts in the abilities of both his teachers and their students – even when those teachers include Professors Snape, Quirrell and Lockhart, proving that world-famous geniuses are as hampered by circumstance as the rest of us.

## Harry Potter 

One of the reasons Dumbledore chooses to leave Harry with the very unmagical Dursleys is that he knows surviving Voldemort’s killing curse would make Harry very famous indeed. Sure enough, when Harry arrives at Hogwarts he is already a household name within the magical community, despite not knowing one end of a wand from the other. Being famous doesn’t sit well with Harry though; he would prefer to immerse himself in the wizarding world than stamp his mark on it.

## Gilderoy Lockhart

Not so Gilderoy Lockhart, Harry’s second-year Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. Lockhart is the kind of celebrity who lives for fame: he’s just as proud of winning *Witch Weekly’s* Most-Charming-Smile Award (five times, actually) as he is of the supposedly impossible feats of defensive magic that formed the basis of his books and for which he became famous. There are a surprising number of people who remain immune to his charms, but as Lockhart doesn’t notice slights he remains cheerfully unaffected.

## Lily and James Potter

Before Harry became world renowned, there were a couple of other Potters doing their bit to raise the status of the family name. His parents, James and Lily, will be forever remembered in wizarding circles for resisting Voldemort and, ultimately, for giving their lives in the fight against him. Lily’s sacrifice – dying in the act of protecting her son – makes her a particular icon of the wizarding world, and it’s a sacrifice that affects Harry far more deeply than Voldemort’s failed curse. 

## Lord Voldemort

The most infamous Dark wizard of them all, He Who Must Not Be Named has, like many a celebrity, actually had a few monikers in his time: Tom Marvolo Riddle, Lord Voldemort, You Know Who. It’s a mark of how well known he is that he doesn’t actually need a name to strike fear into the hearts of witches and wizards everywhere. Still, being an unapologetic, murdering, evil wizard willing to live off the blood of slain unicorns is bound to raise your profile.

## Celestina Warbeck

The wizarding world isn’t all about Dark magic and sacrifice. For those looking for some light relief, internationally acclaimed Welsh singer Celestina Warbeck, sometimes known as ‘the Singing Sorceress’, regularly features on the Wizarding Wireless Network’s show *The Witching Hour* performing tracks including ‘A Cauldron Full of Hot, Strong Love’. Celestina’s private life has given the *Daily Prophet’s* gossip columnists lots to write about, and her high-profile concerts have helped cement her status.

## Rita Skeeter

Rita Skeeter is one *Daily Prophet* staffer who prefers reporting gossip to news, so much so that she’s become almost as well known as the individuals she likes to pour scorn over. She’s a frequent observer of the goings on at the Ministry of Magic as well as the wizarding world’s celebrities, and her writing has secured her quite a following – even if not everything she chooses to report is true.

## Ludo Bagman 

Now head of the Ministry of Magic’s Department of Magical Games and Sports, Ludo Bagman is a former Quidditch star. Supposedly the best Beater the Wimbourne Wasps ever had, he also played for England. So, while he’s not your typical Ministry official, he has plenty of hands-on experience and certainly retains an enthusiastic interest in wizarding sports. 

## Viktor Krum

Bulgaria’s Viktor Krum is the wizarding world’s best-known Quidditch player. Known for his incredible flying prowess, he’s one of the best Seekers in the game, despite still being at school. When he’s not training he studies at the Durmstrang Institute, a wizarding school in the far north of Europe.

## Gellert Grindelwald

Like Krum, Gellert Grindelwald studied at Durmstrang. Unlike Krum, Grindelwald was one of the 20th century’s most dangerous wizards, causing havoc in the wizarding world with his attempts to assert dominance over Muggles. A Dark wizard obsessed with the supposed superiority of the magical population, his actions threatened the existence of the wizarding world and he was only prevented from causing terrible lasting damage when Dumbledore challenged and then beat him in a now-legendary duel.

We can’t actually be the great man himself, but we’ve certainly picked up a few life tips from the old Hogwarts headmaster. So, at the very least, we can be 90% like him. Tops. 

## Don’t fight fire with fire

If there was one thing Albus Dumbledore was known for more than his love of sherbet lemons, it was his calm temper. The man just had tranquillity oozing out of his pores. This isn’t to say that he was never angry – we all remember the fury of Dumbledore – but when he was, it with entirely within reason.

Whenever someone would fly into a rage in front of Dumbledore, he would never react in the same way – that would just be fighting fire with fire, which doesn't get anyone anywhere. And it’s an attitude we should all adopt. There are ways to resolve disagreements without resorting to anger and Dumbledore’s canny ability to defuse a situation is a lesson for us all.

## Don’t be afraid to speak from the heart

One of the best things about Dumbledore – and it’s a long list – was his willingness to talk candidly about matters that meant a lot to him, including a lot of his personal history. That ability to spill your guts when it’s appropriate is refreshing. It means there is little room for dishonesty and it’s the most mature way to approach a situation.

> ‘The truth.’ Dumbledore sighed. ‘It is a beautiful and terrible thing, and should therefore be treated with great caution. However, I shall answer your questions unless I have a very good reason not to, in which case I beg you’ll forgive me. I shall not, of course, lie.’

## Learn how to turn negatives into positives 

Death changes everyone and for so many it’s something that sends you on a downward spiral – but not Dumbledore. When he was in his youth he lost both his parents and his younger sister, Ariana. He was initially depressed at having to care for orphaned Ariana, as he’d had plans for the future, which had since been derailed; and when Ariana died he blamed himself.

> All those closest to Albus – and I count myself one of that lucky number – agree that Ariana’s death and Albus’s feeling of personal responsibility for it (though, of course, he was guiltless) left their mark upon him forever more.

Anyone would be seriously broken-hearted after going through what Dumbledore had gone through at a young age, but where was this Dumbledore in the man we knew? The twinkly-eyed, playful headmaster who genuinely cared for his students and had an enviable attitude to life?

Dumbledore taught us to make sure we take what life throws at us and turn it into something positive. This doesn’t mean you should ignore tragedy, but Dumbledore showed that it shouldn’t dictate your future.

It’s a message Dumbledore imparted to his friends and students before he died and, when he did, it was something Harry had to take on board despite how hard his headmaster’s passing was. It’s important to remember the living as they were and don’t allow their death to cloud your mind, or to stop you living your best life. 

## Eat more sherbet lemons

Well, this one’s just obvious. Dumbledore was well known for his love of the bitter confectionary and had all-round excellent taste in other sweets too. The greatest wizard of all time being a cheeky ol’ sweet-tooth is just too perfect. Maybe he was high on sugar for the entirety of Harry’s adventures. And maybe we should be too.

## Stay humble

Humility was something Albus Dumbledore had running through his veins. Despite being the greatest wizard of his time, he certainly didn’t let it get to his head and was never condescending or belittling to others. This absence of arrogance is inspirational and a trait worth taking on because if Dumbledore, an extraordinary wizard and doer of so much good, wasn’t at all cocky, then what’s anyone else’s excuse?
