## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

The chapter was small, but gave us such hope and insight into Harry Potter’s future. All of a sudden, Harry, Ron, Hermione and Draco were seeing off their own children on the Hogwarts Express, with young Albus Severus, Rose and Scorpius about to embark on their first year. We’re sure you remember all that. But did you remember all the smaller nuggets of information we found out?

## Teddy Lupin was kissing Victoire

After losing his parents as just a baby, a lot of Harry Potter readers were quick to notice that Teddy Lupin’s situation was a lot like Harry’s. It was nice to discover that Teddy seemed content 19 years later, especially considering he was spotted ‘snogging Victoire’ by a shocked James Potter. 

It wasn’t long before it became clear that Victoire (‘Our Victoire! Our cousin!’) must be one of Bill and Fleur’s children. This was later confirmed by J.K. Rowling, and that Victoire was one of three siblings, the others being Dominique and Louis Weasley. 

In the chapter, Lily pondered on how lovely it would be if they got married, making Teddy a proper part of the extended Potter-Weasley clan. In fact, from the epilogue in general we can see that…

## Teddy had become really close to the Potter family  

After professing that Teddy came over for dinner ‘four nights a week’ Harry off-handedly remarked that Teddy should just come and live with them. We know that Teddy spent his childhood with his grandmother, Andromeda Tonks, but Harry seemed to have a close connection with him. No doubt Harry wanted to be as good a godfather to Remus and Tonks’s son as Sirius was to him. 

## Ron learnt to drive a Muggle car. Sort of

After not having much time for driving lessons while fighting Lord Voldemort, Harry and Ron had now learnt to drive. Despite having certain experiences with a certain Ford Anglia as a child, it was amusing to learn that Ron only passed his test thanks to Confunding his Muggle driving instructor.

## Neville became Hogwarts Herbology professor 

Neville was always partial to Herbology in the books, and the epilogue delivered the happy news that he had since landed what must be his dream job: he was Hogwarts’ Herbology professor. After years as a struggling student, we saw Neville flourish during the Battle of Hogwarts, even destroying one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes. The fact he stayed so loyal to the school decades later is heartwarming. 

## Hagrid was still a close family friend

Neville wasn’t the only familiar face at Hogwarts – Hagrid was still there, too! After becoming one of Harry’s greatest companions during his time at the school, it sounded like the always loyal gamekeeper was about to become friends with the next generation of Potters and Weasleys too, and had even ‘invited them round for tea next Friday’.  

## Naturally, Draco Malfoy wasn’t (a close family friend, that is)

What a massive surprise: Harry and Draco didn’t turn out to be bosom buddies. Although, as we see in the epilogue, they were at least now civil. Yes, the pair didn’t exactly have a laugh riot at Hogwarts, but in adulthood it seemed the pair had an unspoken mutual, but at the very least, respectful dislike of each other. 

He did, however, pay Harry the courtesy of giving him a curt nod when he saw him on the platform, nearly two decades after Harry, Ron and Hermione saved his life at the Battle of Hogwarts.

## Albus was terrified of Thestrals 

It sounded like Harry’s eldest son James had been having fun adding to Albus’s pre-Hogwarts nerves, teasing him about which house he’d be sorted into, as well as telling him about some of Hogwarts’ more otherworldly beasts. In particular, Albus seemed scared at the thought of Thestrals – the bony, horse-like creatures that only those who have witnessed death can see. 

## Rose had inherited Hermione’s intelligence
 
Having Hermione Granger as your mum must pile on the pressure somewhat, but by the sounds of a remark from Ron, Rose sounded like she’d picked up some of Hermione’s fierce intelligence. During the epilogue, the glimpse of Rose we got was of an enthusiastic future student just like her mother. She already had her Hogwarts robes on before boarding the train! 

## Slytherin house still had a bad reputation 

Voldemort’s time in power may have long-since passed, but that didn’t mean that the reputation of his house had improved. Albus seemed rather nervous about the idea of being sorted into Slytherin, and had to be reassured by Harry. 

Harry – who asked the Sorting Hat not to put him in Slytherin back in the day – seemed unconcerned about Albus being sorted into his once-rival house, showing just how much he’s matured over the years. It sounded like young Albus, however, had much to learn.

## Every one of Harry’s children was named after someone he respected

Albus Severus was famously named after two headmasters of Hogwarts who truly resonated with Harry, but the names of his other two children also had sentimental value: Lily and James, named after Harry’s mum and dad, of course. Later on, J.K. Rowling revealed their middle names: Lily Luna and James Sirius, named for Harry’s friend Luna Lovegood and his godfather Sirius Black. It’s a very sweet thought, especially when you realise that Harry found a way to bring childhood best friends James and Sirius back together.

## Albus, Rose and Scorpius started Hogwarts at the same time 

With James Potter already at Hogwarts, and Lily and Hugo still too young, we saw that it would be Albus and Rose who would be starting their brand new adventure, alongside Draco’s son Scorpius. Could it be the beginning of a brand new trio? Or a brand new Malfoy-Potter rivalry?

## Harry was still wearing the watch Mrs Weasley got him for his birthday 

At one moment during the epilogue, Harry checked ‘the battered, old watch that had once been Fabian Prewett’s’. Fabian was the brother of Molly Weasley, killed during the first wizarding war, and Molly passed on this watch to Harry on his seventeenth birthday. 

> ‘I’m afraid that one isn’t new like Ron’s, it was actually my brother Fabian’s and he wasn’t terribly careful with his possessions, it’s a bit dented on the back, but –’<br> 
> The rest of her speech was lost; Harry had got up and hugged her. He tried to put a lot of unsaid things into the hug and perhaps she understood them, because she patted his cheek clumsily when he released her, then waved her wand in a slightly random way, causing half a pack of bacon to flop out of the frying pan on to the floor.<br>

This moment was mentioned only briefly in the epilogue, but carried huge emotional weight if you remembered the scene where Molly gave Harry the watch, just as he was about to embark upon his quest to find Voldemort’s Horcruxes. The fact he still had it 19 years later was a true testament to Harry’s bond with the Weasleys.

## Their childhoods were overshadowed by Muggles
For Harry, it was the endless tedium and cruelty of [the Dursleys](/writing-by-jk-rowling/vernon-and-petunia-dursley). With Neville, it was the constant pressure to whip up a bit of magic to convince his family of his abilities.

In the beginning, Neville battled self-doubt as regularly as Harry, and after Malfoy hit him with a Leg-Locker Curse he was close to tears, believing that the Sorting Hat had made a mistake. Not too long afterwards, Harry became convinced that the Sorting Hat had made the wrong choice with him too when he found he could speak Parseltongue, traditionally a Slytherin talent.

While Neville didn’t often find himself in as many deadly situations as Harry, he showed true bravery and spirit in other ways. Such as when he was the first to attack the Boggart in Professor Lupin’s class.

## They shared a tragic loss
Harry’s parents were murdered by Voldemort, and Neville’s were tortured into insanity by Bellatrix Lestrange – a fate just as bad, if not worse.

## They could both see Thestrals
Harry and Neville had both seen death and, as a result, could see the Thestrals, unlike many of the others at the school.

## They both appeared in the prophecy

Of course, the thing that truly tied these two heroes was a prophecy made by Sybill Trelawney. So close was her description of the wizard who would one day vanquish Lord Voldemort, that it could've been either Harry or Neville. > ‘The odd thing, Harry,’ he said softly, ‘is that it may not have meant you at all. ## The Deathly Hallows themselves

We discovered so many incredible magical objects through the Harry Potter books, but J.K. Rowling saved some of the best till last. 

Thanks to an old children’s book, *The Tales of Beedle the Bard*, Harry learnt that there once were three brothers who sought to escape Death. One took the Cloak of Invisibility, another took the Resurrection Stone, and the final brother acquired the Elder Wand. 

Despite Hermione’s certainty that the Hallows were simply a childhood story, Harry became obsessed with the three most powerful objects in the wizarding world, as you would. And for the first time ever, Hermione turned out to be wrong about something – they were definitely real… 

## Dobby’s sacrifice 

Ever since he first turned up at Privet Drive in *Chamber of Secrets*, Dobby had always been there for Harry Potter. Or as he would say, ‘Harry Potter, sir!’ From trying to protect Harry from the Basilisk to knitting Harry a spectacular pair of socks, Dobby was an absolute dear on every single page. 

His final sacrifice (saving Harry and his friends in Malfoy Manor, stabbed by Bellatrix Lestrange’s knife in the process) was an utterly heartbreaking turn of events. Harry was deeply affected by this loss, and dug Dobby’s grave the ‘non-magical’ way, as a sign of respect for the house-elf.

## Hermione 

Yes, we know Hermione wasn’t exactly a new character or anything, but she gets her own section here because of how incredible she was in *Deathly Hallows.*

When Harry, Ron and Hermione went off to hunt Horcruxes, it was thanks to Hermione’s talents being as bottomless as her jewelled bag that keep the trio out of harm’s way. From her complicated charms on their tents, to her grit and determination even after Ron left, to just being generally awesome, Hermione’s bravery in this book was just staggering.

## The Battle of Hogwarts 

The book’s defining moment. With Voldemort on his way, and Harry convinced that the Dark Lord’s final Horcruxes must lie in the castle itself, Hogwarts ‘takes arms’ under the steely determination of Professor McGonagall. 

With every quarter of the wizarding school getting involved – even the paintings and suits of armour – this magical battle truly brought out a new side to a lot of characters, uniting in victory and tragedy.

## Molly’s finest hour 

Ah, Molly, the jumper-knitting mother and beloved family head of the Weasleys. Wouldn’t hurt a fly, would she? Except she absolutely would if someone tried to kill her daughter. Oh Bellatrix, that was a *big* mistake. 

In our humble opinion, Molly’s defining moment across all seven Harry Potter books was her final stand with Bellatrix – a witch whose evil and menace almost matched that of Lord Voldemort himself. After Lestrange’s curse missed Ginny by nearly an inch, Molly stepped up for her only daughter in the most delightful way possible, and rid the world of the Death Eater forever. 

All together now: ‘NOT MY DAUGHTER, YOU BITCH!’

## Neville’s bravery  

The Battle of Hogwarts brought out a newfound strength in a lot of characters – not least of all Neville Longbottom. After spending his earlier Hogwarts years melting cauldrons and chasing after his toad Trevor, Neville truly came into his own during his final Hogwarts year, leading Dumbledore’s Army and emerging as a war-torn champion when Harry returned. 

Seeing Neville’s transformation into a leader and hero was quite something. To top things off, Neville also destroyed Lord Voldemort’s final Horcrux – the terrifying giant snake Nagini. Not too shabby. 


## Ron and Hermione finally kissed

Seven. Books. It took SEVEN BOOKS for Harry’s two best friends to finally lock lips. After years of bickering, a few botched attempts at inviting the other on a date, and several thousand other awkward moments, Hermione and Ron broke into a passionate embrace right in the middle of the Battle of Hogwarts. As Harry said: ‘Is this the moment?’ Yeah, guys, really?  

## The Prince’s Tale 
A lot of heroes were born out of the Battle of Hogwarts, but none of them were quite as brave as Severus Snape. 

It wasn’t until the Battle of Hogwarts that Harry learnt that Snape was not on Voldemort’s side after all. Snape’s dying moments said it all – he looked into Harry’s eyes and bestowed upon him a collection of memories that explained everything: his lonely childhood, his love for Lily, his devastation when she was murdered. It was a powerful chapter that put a flawed but wonderful character into perfect context.

## Voldemort’s death 

Of course, we quite liked it when this happened. Yes, after decades of on-off torturing of wizard and Muggle-kind alike, Lord Voldemort was vanquished by Harry Potter. The best bit? His own spell rebounded back on him. How embarrassing.

## The epilogue 

Just when we thought the adventure had come to a close once and all, we were thrilled to find an epilogue entitled ‘Nineteen Years Later’. 

Here we learnt that Harry, Ginny, Ron and Hermione now had children of their own going off to Hogwarts. We also saw tiny glimpses into the lives of some other characters: Neville was now a Herbology Professor, Draco Malfoy was married with a son called Scorpius and Hagrid still lived happily at Hogwarts, ready to take Harry, Ron and Hermione’s children for tea. Professor McGonagall was one of just seven Animagi registered in the last century, according to Hermione, who told us that the Ministry’s Improper Use of Magic Office kept close tabs on wizards with this ability.

But the ability to transform into animals was sometimes a scary business. A ‘near riot’ was caused by a group of 14-year-olds from the Ugandan wizarding school [Uagadou](/writing-by-jk-rowling/uagadou) at the International Symposium of Animagi. Their synchronised transformation into elephants and cheetahs intimidated some of the older and more experienced witches and wizards.

It sounds like the number of Animagi might have increased in the wizarding world, and even during Harry’s time at Hogwarts it was clear there were at least four unregistered ones… 

## Rita Skeeter

The sensationalist *Daily Prophet* reporter whom Dumbledore had banned from Hogwarts grounds managed somehow to wheedle her way back in by changing into her illegal Animagus form: that of a nasty little beetle. Appropriate enough for a journalist who scuttled merrily over the misfortune of others and fed on trash, you might say. 

The punishment for being an unregistered Animagus was time in Azkaban so, when clever-clogs Hermione discovered [Rita](/features/rita-skeeter)’s secret, the threat of exposure was enough leverage to make her stop writing those poisonous articles. 

Her Quick-Quotes Quill was next used to write a balanced interview for *The Quibbler* (much to her chagrin), giving Harry’s account of Voldemort’s return. Naturally, she protested but Hermione’s jokey suggestion that the *Daily Prophet* might pay well for an insider’s account of Azkaban was enough to get Rita on side. 

## James Potter

Harry’s father [James](/features/james-potter) and godfather [Sirius Black](/features/sirius-black) worked for three years during their time at Hogwarts to become Animagi to keep their friend [Remus Lupin](/features/remus-lupin) company during the full moon. Werewolves might be dangerous to humans, but they don’t attack other animals; so Lupin’s friends found a way to stay together as a kind of pack.

James’s Animagus form was that of a stag, which earned him his nickname, Prongs. Strikingly, Harry’s Patronus was a stag and his mother [Lily](/features/lily-potter)’s was a doe, a female deer, showing that the family’s characters were in harmony and formed part of the same animal group.

## Sirius Black

It wasn’t until their fifth year that three of the Marauders became Animagi – the process was notoriously difficult, and could go horribly wrong.

Luckily, Sirius and James were the among the brightest students in their year and perfected the magic needed so that they could keep their Lupin company during his monthly transformations. Sirius’s Animagus form was that of a big shaggy-haired black dog, hence his nickname – Padfoot. 

Even Dumbledore wasn’t aware that Sirius and James had learned this skill. When Sirius was accused of betraying the Potters to Voldemort, nobody left alive except Lupin knew he could pass himself off as a dog (well, nobody except Peter, who was too busy hiding as a rat to tell anyone). 

Having this ability certainly paid off down the line, as it allowed Sirius to escape from Azkaban. It also meant he was able to gain access to Hogwarts and Harry, once he learned the truth. 

Harry might have mistaken Sirius for a Grim – an unlucky omen – but discovering he had a godfather who was both alive and who had bought him a Firebolt broomstick was perhaps one of the least grim moments of his life.

## Peter Pettigrew

Perhaps it should have been obvious from the form he took that [Peter Pettigrew](/features/peter-pettigrew) was at risk of betraying his friends. The rat who Ron lovingly cared for for 12 years was identifiable as Wormtail from his missing finger.

Up until his exposure it had been believed that Pettigrew had died soon after the Potters were murdered and that the biggest part that remained of him had been that finger. As it turned out, Wormtail cut that finger off himself and staged his phoney death to implicate Sirius instead.

Surviving on bits of fluff and jelly beans in Ron’s pocket as Scabbers, Pettigrew bided his time. Sirius and Lupin caught up with Peter eventually, but in his rodent form he slipped through their grasp and back to the Dark Lord’s side.

These are the characters you look forward to spending time with on the page or screen: they may intrigue you, inspire you, enrage you or make you laugh. So it’s hardly surprising that when any of these characters die, the impact is profound. 

Supposedly, there are seven stages of grief. Here’s how we feel they relate to seven of the saddest moments in the Harry Potter books and films.


## Sirius Black – Disbelief 

Sirius’s death at the hands of his cruel Death Eater cousin Bellatrix was so sudden it didn’t seem real. One moment he was laughing at her and daring her to do better, the next he had disappeared behind the veil and that was it... he’d gone? 

Harry’s disbelief mirrored our own. In the film adaptation of *Order of the Phoenix*, Harry’s scream was muted and he was held back by Lupin. It’s a moment that beautifully reflected our own feelings. How could this be? Hadn’t this boy been through enough? The closest connection to his parents was lost forever, and we’re left broken-hearted for him.

## Albus Dumbledore – Denial

Maybe you slammed the book shut at the moment Snape uttered *‘Avada Kedavra!’*, or paused the film to make a cup of tea, because there was absolutely no way you could handle Dumbledore dying. It couldn’t be real – as Harry thought on the next page: ‘...it could not have happened’. 

Terror tore through Harry’s heart as it tore through your own. ‘Not Dumbledore, please not Dumbledore,’ you repeatedly muttered to yourself. For most of the next chapter, we clung to the hope that he wasn’t really dead. But then it hit us, and as Harry tried ‘to absorb the enormous and incomprehensible truth: that never again would Dumbledore speak to him, never again could he help’... so did we.

## Dobby – Bargaining

Harry begged and bargained, pleading for Dobby’s life as the little house-elf lay dying in his arms. ‘Harry… Potter…’ Dobby said gently, for the last time. 

And as those big, wide eyes glazed over, there was that devastating sentence from the book: ‘…his eyes were nothing more than great, glassy orbs sprinkled with light from the stars they could not see.’ 

It’s so terribly sad, and ‘Here lies Dobby, a Free Elf’ are six of the saddest words you’ll ever read.

## Fred Weasley – Guilt

During the Battle of Hogwarts, it was almost too much for Harry to bear to look at the bodies of his fallen friends – Fred Weasley in particular. He was plagued with the thought that if he had given himself over to Voldemort, this might not have happened.  

On the anniversary of the battle in 2015, J.K. Rowling tweeted how sorry she was at writing Fred’s death and all of the sadness came flooding back. Even now, many years on, his death is too much for words. His exciting young life cut short; the very notion of George without Fred; the dreadful effect on his parents and siblings. How could this possibly be? 

Fred died with his ‘last laugh still etched upon his face’; we could barely see through our tears. In the film of *Deathly Hallows*, Ron broke down as we saw Molly stroking his forehead, desperately needing to comfort him. It was all kinds of devastating all at once.

## Remus Lupin – Anger

Remus Lupin: fondly remembered as a kind man with a slightly scruffy appearance and tatty old briefcase, who suffered an excruciating transformation every month. He had such a difficult life and just when he’d found love and acceptance – and become a father – he died. 

It’s hard not to rage against something so tragic, and it was easy to understand Harry’s reaction: ‘… he yearned not to feel ... he wished he could rip out his heart, his innards, everything that was screaming inside him...’

## Nymphadora Tonks – Depression

Clever, funny, and brave, Tonks was one-in-a-million, and not just because of her powers as a Metamorphmagus. She was loyal, capable and she fought for the person she wanted to be with. It was the strength of her love for Remus that brought her to Hogwarts for the final battle and ultimately, to her death. 

All that promise and bravery was lost, and this character we grew to care so deeply for in just three books was suddenly gone. 

And her son, just like Harry, was left alone – never knowing his kind, gentle and wonderful parents. We were left with the image of Tonks and Remus united in death, their bodies lying next to Fred, ‘pale and still and peaceful-looking, apparently asleep beneath the dark, enchanted ceiling’. 

## Severus Snape – Acceptance 

At the moment of Severus’s terrible death, we did not truly know him. He was Dumbledore’s killer and the man Harry hated and who, by all accounts, had hated him since he first set foot in Hogwarts.

But then Harry was plunged into the Pensieve and we learnt the truth. It is so shocking and sad; everything we thought we knew changed. Severus placed himself in constant danger for the woman he always loved, Lily Potter. Learning the truth about Snape brought acceptance of him as a loyal, devoted man, and probably one of the bravest Harry Potter ever knew.

Even if you have magical powers, adolescence is unavoidable. Everyone has to go through the same stressful situations and cringeworthy moments – even the Boy Who Lived. 

It might be something of a comfort to know that these three had it just as bad as the rest of us.   

## Exams, ugh

The bane of every teen’s life. Even though the Hogwarts exams were for frankly awesome subjects like Transfiguration and Defence Against the Dark Arts, studying was a nightmare. Bookworm Hermione had trouble with the pressure, once hitting Harry on the nose with her *Achievements in Charming* book.

By now you may well have forgotten your Pythagorean Theorem or the equation for photosynthesis (the really hard one), but at least you never mutated a dinner plate into a mushroom in front of an examiner, like Ron.

## Choosing careers

Being asked what you want to do for the rest of your adult life is terrifying, whether your options are becoming an architect or becoming Minister for Magic.

Harry only ever considered becoming an Auror but was a little concerned that he would need a minimum of five N.E.W.T.s – no mean feat, particularly for a boy whose Potions teacher appeared to despise him.

Despite never getting round to taking his N.E.W.T.s (too busy hunting Horcruxes), he still became an Auror anyway – so career dreams do come true!

## First kisses 

We all remember how horrendous the build-up to our first kiss was. And it’s not always a good first experience.

Our three heroes all had differing experiences with their first kisses. After a year of fancying the pants off Cho Chang, Harry finally kissed her in fifth year after a Dumbledore’s Army meeting – something he described as: ‘Wet … Because she was crying.’ Not exactly *Casablanca*.

Ron’s first snog was no less cringeworthy: a very public display of affection with the rather clingy Lavender Brown.

We never witnessed Hermione’s big moment, almost certainly with Viktor Krum. We can only hope it was a little more romantic than the boys’ turned out to be.
