## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

Arguably the most terrifying of the [Hogwarts ghosts](/writing-by-jk-rowling/hogwarts-ghosts "Hogwarts Ghosts By J.K. Rowling"), the Bloody Baron wore the chains he clanked so loudly as penance for a crime of passion committed centuries ago. 

With his silver bloodstains and harsh, whispering voice, the Bloody Baron was the most fearful phantom on the block. But none of the other spirits knew the tale of unrequited love behind his bloodied state. That is, except for the one whose murder earned him his nickname: Helena Ravenclaw, known to Hogwarts students as the Grey Lady.

The Baron was believed to have attended Hogwarts in the time of the four founders, and was violently in love with the daughter of Rowena Ravenclaw. The pair were soon doomed to share the same posthumous universe for eternity. How did this happen? 

Overshadowed by her brilliant, brainy mother, Helena stole what legend has it was a cornerstone of Rowena’s wit and wisdom – a tiara enchanted to enhance the wisdom of the wearer. This would later be known as the lost diadem of Ravenclaw.

‘I stole the diadem,’ Helena told Harry during the Battle of Hogwarts. ‘I sought to make myself cleverer, more important than my mother. I ran away with it.’ Helena fled to Albania with her mother’s diadem, never to achieve her ambitions. She could never have predicted that Voldemort would find her mother’s precious diadem centuries later and turn it into a Horcrux.

The loss of the diadem was a terrible blow to Rowena, who hid its loss and her daughter’s betrayal from the other Hogwarts founders. On her deathbed, Ravenclaw sent the Baron to find Helena, because she knew that he loved her daughter. ‘She sent a man who had long loved me, though I spurned his advances, to find me. She knew that he would not rest until he had done so,’ Helena told Harry.

The hot-headed Baron tracked her down, but when Helena refused to return with him, he murdered her in a rage. Overcome with remorse, he turned the blade on himself. ‘All these centuries later, he wears his chains as an act of penitence… as he should,’ Helena said bitterly.

The Bloody Baron was the ghost of Slytherin house and was famous for the clattering of chains and rages in the Astronomy Tower, no doubt still tortured by his actions all those years ago. The Grey Lady, Ravenclaw’s house ghost, would often be seen drifting around the castle serenely. 

Both ghosts regularly attended Hogwarts start-of-term feasts, but tended to stick to their own house tables. Both had a reputation for being standoffish. Nearly Headless Nick (Gryffindor) and the Fat Friar (Hufflepuff) were a lot friendlier to their students.

It took quite some persuading on Harry’s part to get the story of her death out of the Grey Lady. It was only when Harry reminded her of the part she played in helping Voldemort locate the diadem in the forest where she died that she remorsefully shared her tale. It seemed it was not just the Baron who was tormented by regret.

An unexpected benefit of the Bloody Baron’s reputation was that he was the only one who could keep Peeves under control. We don’t know if Peeves knew the story behind the Baron’s bloodstained appearance, but we hope he would’ve been tactful enough to steer clear of any songs on the subject if he did.

Still mourning the loss of Sirius and shaken by a prophecy that predicted he would either kill or be killed by Lord Voldemort, Harry was in a very dark place by his sixth year.

But events took an even more intriguing turn, as Professor Dumbledore taught Harry all about Voldemort’s history, Hogwarts got a new Potions master and a cryptic figure called the Half-Blood Prince added even more mystery to proceedings.

Oh, and Harry realised he liked his best friend’s sister, too. Just another casual year at Hogwarts.


## Professor Slughorn

Severus Snape finally nabbed the Defence Against the Dark Arts job, so this year Hogwarts got a new Potions Master. Or in this case, an old Potions master in the shape of the reluctant former Head of Slytherin house, Professor Horace Slughorn. 

Slughorn loved to bask in the reflected glory of the famous witches and wizards he befriended as a teacher, so Harry proved too tempting a famous wizard to pass up when Dumbledore invited him to rejoin the staff. 

It wasn’t long before his ‘Slug Club’ (an exclusive club that Slughorn only invited esteemed witches and wizards to) was back in full swing. It was the first of many things Slughorn brought with him to Hogwarts, revealing himself to be a truly fascinating bloke.

## The Half-Blood Prince

Not exactly the greatest potions-maker of all time, Harry found himself suddenly very talented at the subject when he acquired an old Potions textbook previously owned by the ‘Half-Blood Prince’. 

Harry’s grubby old book was crammed with shortcuts and homemade spells that help him cut corners in class. Not all was as it seems, and Harry discovered that Severus Snape was the man behind the helpful scribbles. You’d think after Tom Riddle’s diary and the vicious *Monster Book of Monsters*, Harry would know not to trust books by now.

## Harry and Ginny

Harry had dealt with a number of great adversaries in his time, but in *Half-Blood Prince* it was a crush on Ginny Weasley that he had to try to vanquish. Like many teenage boys, it wasn’t until Ginny started going out with someone else that Harry realised that he actually liked Ron’s little sister. 

His confused feelings triggered the traditional teenage angst, jealousy and lovelorn dreams. Never mind Death Eaters, teenage crushes are the worst.

## Horcruxes

Before his return in *Goblet of Fire*, Voldemort existed to Harry in a sort of ‘half form’, but in *Half-Blood Prince* we found out why Voldemort was never entirely gone. 

As Dumbledore explained, Voldemort was kept alive by Horcruxes; fragments of his soul that were created every time he performed a horribly evil deed. Harry must destroy these Horcruxes (which could be absolutely anything) and venture with Dumbledore into the Pensieve to learn all about the Dark Lord’s history. How far away the days of making feathers float seem now.

## Felix Felicis 

Probably one of the best potions ever, Slughorn introduced Harry and his class to Felix Felicis, otherwise known as ‘liquid luck’. 

This potion blessed the drinker with good fortune for a limited time. Harry won some in a potion-making competition, and he embarked upon a very action-packed night, which ended in… 

## Aragog’s funeral 

After being tasked with the near-impossible mission of trying to obtain a memory of Professor Slughorn’s that the professor had attempted to ‘edit’, Harry’s slurp of Felix led him to Hagrid’s Hut. 

On the way Harry bumped into Slughorn, who learnt that Hagrid’s Acromantula friend Aragog was dead. Since Acromantula venom was worth a pretty penny, Slughorn tagged along to the funeral. A wine-soaked evening later, Harry had the memory and we enjoyed one of our favourite-ever scenes.  

## Lav-Lav and Won-Won 

The Hermione and Ron will-they-won’t-they saga took a rather infuriating turn this year, with the pair going to incredible lengths not to be together. For this, we entirely blame Ron. Or should we say Won-Won. 

Over sixth year, Ron became romantically entangled with Lavender Brown, despite only having a mutual interest in each other’s tonsils in common. The schmaltzy sweetheart necklace and their public displays of affection got just about everybody’s attention. 

## Draco, the reluctant Death Eater

Draco’s days of being the name-calling, stereotypical school bully seemed a thing of the past by year six, when he joined the Death Eaters. How far he’d come from making ‘Potter Stinks’ badges. 

He was assigned a terrible task by Lord Voldemort, and the usually arrogant and swaggering Draco seemed more subdued. In a shocking reveal, Harry learnt that Draco had been tasked with the murder of Dumbledore. A more shocking twist, perhaps, was that Draco couldn’t do the deed. He might have been a bit of a git sometimes, but Draco proved he’s no killer.

## Dumbledore’s bravery

Ill-judged relationships and the Half-Blood Prince aside, the main event that rocked this story was the death of Professor Dumbledore, who went out in an incredible final act of bravery. 

The scene in the cave is a hard read; Dumbledore in terror was something we were not prepared for. With Harry’s help, he battled through and the pair escaped with the (fake) Horcrux... but Dumbledore was weakened by the cursed potion left by Voldemort. 

Dumbledore returned to Hogwarts to find Draco and a pack of Death Eaters had him cornered. It was Professor Snape who killed the headmaster who taught Harry so much, devastating him and the rest of the school. But Dumbledore didn’t die in vain.

## Harry knew what he had to do…

While both shocking and unbelievably tragic, the death of this kind, clever, guiding hand gave Harry the momentum he needed to hunt down Voldemort’s Horcruxes. 

It was the death scene heard around the world as millions of readers screamed ‘NOOO!’ at their copies of *Half-Blood Prince*. Snape finally became the villain Harry thought he was, and readers had to wait two years to find out what happened next.

But perhaps he wasn’t really to blame for his greed, laziness or bad personality. He may have been a bit of a pig (literally!) and his behaviour, from stealing cake to playground taunting, was often unpleasant. But with parents like Vernon and Petunia, is it any wonder he turned out like he did? Here’s why we love to hate him so very much…

## Oh, the tantrums

His tantrums were honestly quite epic. In fact, shortly after we learnt that his first word was ‘Shan’t’, we discovered that he had a gift for monumental meltdowns…

## Not the sharpest tool in the box

He was blessedly dim sometimes. Something of a gift for poor Harry, who often had only his brains to protect him against Dudley’s, sorry, Duddydums’, fists…

## Doting parents or bad influence?

We reckon Dudley’s parents were on his side a little too much to be healthy. Vernon and Petunia were blissfully blind to any of their son’s shortcomings and indulged him way too much in all things.

Dudley was traumatised by magic. First a pig’s tail courtesy of Hagrid, then a four-foot tongue thanks to Fred and George’s ‘dropped’ Ton-Tongue Toffee.

Vernon bullied Harry shamelessly and he passed that behaviour on to his son. As a teenager Dudley never missed an opportunity to be as cruel as possible, and he did it well…

## A glimmer of hope…

But despite all of that, we truly believe that beneath the nasty comments and fists was a boy with a heart struggling to get out.
