## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

__Hedwig was more than Harry’s pet__  

While Harry stayed with the Dursleys every summer, Hedwig was one of the few reminders he had that Hogwarts was real. She was his constant connection to the wizarding world up until her death. She wasn’t just a pet to Harry, or a creature to deliver his post; she was also a friend. As Harry says in *Order of the Phoenix*, Hedwig ‘was the only friend he had at number four, Privet Drive’. 

When Harry felt overwhelmed (or couldn’t deal with Ron and Hermione’s bickering) he would often visit Hedwig’s roost in the Hogwarts owlery. Her silent comfort and the quiet of the owlery was something of a refuge.

__She was smart (and not just for a bird)__  

Hedwig (and the same could be said of the other owls at Hogwarts – except maybe Pigwidgeon) proved time and time again that she had more smarts than your average snowy owl. 

She always knew that a letter addressed to Snuffles was intended for Sirius; and now that we think of it, never even needed an address to be written on an envelope. She was also able to follow more complex instructions, such as ‘keep pecking [Ron and Hermione] till they've written decent-length answers’ in *Order of the Phoenix*.

She always managed to show up wherever Harry was, even when he had run away from Privet Drive. Harry was something of a homing beacon for Hedwig – and that’s perhaps because they were each other’s home.

__She really meant something to readers__ 

Nothing proved how important Hedwig was more than the reaction of fans when she was killed during the Battle of the Seven Potters in *Deathly Hallows*.

In the book, Hedwig was killed as she sat in her cage by Harry’s side – as she had so many times before – as they attempted to escape on the back of Hagrid’s motorcycle. In the film, the scene was made even more heartbreaking, as Hedwig was killed while attempting to protect Harry from Death Eaters. 

J.K. Rowling has said previously: ‘The loss of Hedwig represented a loss of innocence and security. She has been almost like a cuddly toy to Harry at times. Voldemort killing her marked the end of childhood. I'm sorry... I know that death upset a LOT of people!’

> The broomstick spun to earth, but he just managed to seize the strap of his rucksack and the top of the cage as the motorbike swung the right way up again. A second’s relief, and then another burst of green light. The owl screeched and fell to the floor of the cage.

Arguably the funniest and most outspoken of the trio spent much of his time trying to emerge out of the shadows of his sprawling family and remarkable best friends. 

He was the second-youngest child in a whopping-great family, and the least academically accomplished of his friendship group (yup, Harry got better marks even if they both copied Hermione). Plus, with the whole ‘my best mate is the Boy Who Lived’ deal, life could sometimes seem a bit of a bummer to Ron.

Feelings of resentment did pop up occasionally (hello Triwizard Tournament exile and that time that Horcrux plunged him into a never-ending pit of insecurity), but for 99.99999 per cent of the time Ron was the bestest of best pals.

He delivered witty insights in any situation, brought fun when all those around him were in fear of their lives, was loyal to a fault and found humour even when certain death looked, er, fairly certain.

His generosity of spirit, boyishness and silliness gave Harry back some of his childhood and reminded us quite how young the three ware despite the dangers they faced.

Ron also quietly became one of the biggest heroes of the story, proving his intelligence and bravery countless times. Yet, like Neville whose lack of ability as a student made his leadership all the more surprising, sometimes Ron’s achievements were more impressive for being unexpected. 

There were several key occasions — from his chess prowess hunting the Philosopher’s Stone to the time he opened the Chamber of Secrets to retrieve a Basilisk fang — when it became obvious that without Ron’s help Harry might not have defeated You-Know-Who.

The lyrics to ‘Weasley is our King’ might claim he ‘cannot save a thing’ but, Quidditch aside, he saved Harry, Hermione, and even Draco Malfoy on more than one occasion. 

‘Always the tone of surprise,’ he complained grumpily after one such instance. Harry might be the Chosen One, but Ron was the one Harry chose as his best friend. The youngest Weasley boy was definitely a Keeper – in the Quidditch and other sense. Here are a few special moments that definitively proved that Weasley is our King…

__Firstly, he made us laugh__

From being bewildered by ‘felly-tones’ and referring to the non-magical community as ‘those Muggle nutters’, it’s interesting to note that by the end of the story Ron had two Muggles as parents-in-law.

‘Yeah, well, food’s one of the five exceptions to Gamp’s Law of Elemental Transfiguration,’ said Ron, to general astonishment.

__He was totally not bothered by Blood Status__  
A true Weasley, Ron couldn’t give a stuff whether he was half-blood or half-anything else. In fact, he merrily called his family ‘blood traitors’. 

__He recognised his failings and – crucially — atoned for them__  
‘He – well,’ Ron’s ears turned bright red and he became engrossed in a tuft of grass at his feet, which he prodded with his toe, ‘he must’ve known I’d run out on you.’
‘No,’ Harry corrected him. ‘He must’ve known you’d always want to come back.’

The usually-cheeky Ron’s true insecurities about the achievements of his siblings were revealed when he looked into the one place that showed your heart’s desires – and saw himself, a success, and standing alone.

## They went to Ilvermorny, and we know more about its origins
North American children go to Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Its origins are shrouded in mystery: in the seventeenth century the school was merely a hut, but by the early twentieth century Ilvermorny was considered one of the best institutes of magical learning in the world.

British children with magical abilities get a letter to attend Hogwarts, a sprawling castle in the Scottish Highlands, established in the Middle Ages. 

## They used different currency
We know that by the [eighteenth century](/writing-by-jk-rowling/seventeenth-century-and-beyond-en), North American wizards used the Dragot – which seems to be the equivalent to the UK Galleon. We wonder what the the US version of the Sickle or Knut is…

## American wizards had four leading wandmakers to choose from
There were several established wandmakers of note in North America: Shikoba Wolfe, Johannes Jonker, Thiago Quintana and Violetta Beauvais. The most famous user of a Beauvais wand was the President of MACUSA in the 1920s: Seraphina Picquery.

1) We want to see this wand and 2) we’d like one. 

## North American witches and wizards seemed warier of No-Majs
…than their modern day British equivalents. From what we’ve seen, British wizards tend to find Muggles curious rather than dangerous. 

They were right to be wary, as the Salem Witch Trials proved; a number of witches and No-Majs, innocent of any crime, tragically lost their lives during that time.

## Pure-blood prejudices didn’t cross the pond
It appears that the pure-blood prejudices sometimes found in Europe happily did not take root in the North American wizarding world. 

## Making sense of MACUSA
The governments of the British and American magical communities closely resemble their Muggle, or No-Maj, counterparts. 

Britain has the Ministry of Magic, with a Minister at its head, while the Magical Congress of the United States of America is run by a President. The British Ministry of Magic keeps a certain degree of ties with the Muggle government; up until the 1920s MACUSA, however, did not. 

## American witches and wizards had to get good with plants, fast
In the Old World, the local Apothecary was on hand to the witch or wizard looking to brew a potion. The magical immigrants who came to the New World had to wing it a little, and discover the magical properties of the new plants they encountered. 

## The modern day British had Death Eaters, American wizards had…
… Scourers to contend with. They began as magical bounty hunters, who (literally) cashed in on the void left by traditional law enforcement and hunted wizard criminals worth their trouble. 

Magical abilities were often rooted out in the Scourers’ descendants, leaving many later generations with a hatred for all things magical. 

## A law separated the American wizarding community from No-Majs
A catastrophic romance between a No-Maj Scourer descendent and a witch ended with the No-Maj staging an attack on MACUSA. And you think you’ve had bad dates!

This event brought about [Rappaport’s Law](/writing-by-jk-rowling/rappaports-law-en), which decreed that No-Majs and wizard-kind should not mix again. 

## …and Americans had to have a wand permit
Legislation announced by MACUSA at the end of the nineteenth century meant that, unlike witches and wizards in the UK, all US wizards had to carry a wand permit. 

## The American establishment wasn’t particularly tolerant of fantastic beasts
Pre 1920s, ghosts, poltergeists and fantastic creatures were considered more of a threat by the American wizard government, as they could expose magic to the wider world. 

So that was our first look at History of Magic in North America… we can’t wait to see what comes next.

## Firstly, Animagi have to register

Seeing as the books feature so many unregistered Animagi, we sometimes forget that you’re actually supposed to register if you want to become one. If you don’t, you’re actually supposed to go to [Azkaban](/writing-by-jk-rowling/azkaban "Azkaban by J.K. Rowling").  

At Hogwarts, students learn about Animagi in their third year Transfiguration class. At the Ugandan school [Uagadou](/writing-by-jk-rowling/uagadou "Uagadou by J.K. Rowling"), students can master the complex Transfiguration by age 14. But sometimes, like in the case of the Marauders, you may not want anyone to know that you have this ability.

## The learning process to become an Animagus is... complex

As you might imagine, you can’t just become an Animagus overnight. The learning process involves holding the leaf of a Mandrake in your mouth for an entire month, for example – which is why most students stick to wizard chess when it comes to extra-curricular activities.

## Transfiguration and Animagi are different

For example: if Viktor Krum can transfigure his head into a shark’s, like he does in *Goblet of Fire*, that doesn’t mean he is an Animagus. 

Transfiguration is a form of spell-casting, whereas becoming an Animagus is forever. 

The first recorded Animagus was Ancient Greek wizard Falco Aesalon__  
And yes, he could turn into a falcon. Lucky.

## You cannot choose your Animagus animal

If we could choose our Animagus, you can rest assured we’d all be lions, adorable puppies, or magnificent eagles. But realistically, an Animagus is closely linked to your personality. For example, the brave and rebellious James Potter is famously a stag, whereas the conniving journalist Rita Skeeter is a beetle. 

## Your Animagus and Patronus animal can be the same 

If a wizard never masters Animagus magic, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll never find out the animal they could’ve been. Another pretty complex form of magic, the Patronus Charm, has been known to mirror it, meaning the animal you cast to attack Dementors could well be your inner animal too. Minerva McGonagall’s Animagus form, for example, is famously a cat, and so is her [Patronus](/writing-by-jk-rowling/patronus-charm "Patronus Charm by J.K. Rowling").

## Your Animagus may embody a distinguishing feature of your human self

An Animagus may seem the perfect disguise, but once you descend into your animal-self, there may be a distinguishing feature about you that stays. For example, Rita Skeeter’s beetle has little glasses-markings around the eyes, and in the famous case of Wormtail, both he and ‘Scabbers’ were missing a finger.  

## In North America Animagi were sometimes known as ‘skin walkers’

Native American Animagi seem to have been closely linked to the legend of the skin walkers. The myth told of evil witches or wizards that could transform into animals, and gained their powers through the sacrifice of a family member. This damaging rumour was often perpetuated by fearful No-Maj medicine men.  

## You do not adopt the life span of the animal you become  

Ron was always so bewildered that his pet Scabbers managed to live for so long; 12 years is a very, very old rat. That is, unless you’re actually Peter Pettigrew masquerading as a rat, which in this case was true. This means you could theoretically be an animal for decades, far longer than the animal is supposed to live.

At the start of the twentieth century, women were trussed tightly in corsets and shoe-skimming skirts, their hair arranged smartly in buns and their neat collars secured with prim cameo necklaces – a look designed to suggest sobriety and propriety.  

Men wore heavy suits, top hats and straitlaced jackets with tails – changing several times a day according to strict etiquette, and always topping outfits with a silk tie.  

By 1920, after the First World War, American women had not only secured the vote, they were now experimenting with wearing the trousers outside the ballot box.  

Meanwhile, men had begun wearing shorts, and flirting with brightly-coloured shoes and flash bow ties. Post-war euphoria unleashed a new spirit of frivolity, and derring-do seized the nation and its wardrobes. Women lopped off their hair into sharp little bobs, then sported cute cloche hats, all the better to see them with. They acquired fabulous fur coats, to keep themselves cosy while travelling in newly-minted automobiles.
