## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

## When he refused to see Norbert as anything other than his adorable pet

Hagrid’s views on what constitutes a good pet were perhaps, at times, slightly misguided. After all, he bestowed the name ‘Fluffy’ on a huge, three-headed dog. One such pet was, of course, [Norbert the Norwegian Ridgeback](/features/norbert). Hagrid had always wanted a dragon, so acquire a dragon he did.

##  When he showed us the power of brotherly love
When Hagrid found that his half-brother [Grawp](/features/grawp) was being bullied by other giants, a combination of sentimentality and brotherly protectiveness lead Hagrid to take Grawp, albeit against his will, to live in the [Forbidden Forest](/features/the-forbidden-forest "The Forbidden Forest").  
  
>  ‘I knew if I jus’ got him back,’ said Hagrid, sounding close to tears himself, ‘an’ – an’ taught him a few manners – I’d be able ter take him outside an’ show ev’ryone he’s harmless!’

## When his faith in Snape didn’t waver

Hagrid wanted Harry to show the wizarding world that heroism and success have nothing to do with how ‘pure’ or otherwise your blood is.

Jenny Tempe’s first designs for the [Death Eater](/collection/characters-deatheaters "Death Eaters") costumes were based on simple shapes.   

‘They were only seen in silhouette during the attack at the [Quidditch World Cup](/writing-by-jk-rowling/history-of-the-quidditch-world-cup) or in the fog at the graveyard, so I wanted a strong recognisable profile.’   

Their spartan robes and leather hoods were reimagined for their next appearance, and it was realised that, ‘the Death Eaters have quite showy aesthetics,’ explains prop modeller Pierre Bohanna.  

Concept artist Rob Bliss designed their silvery masks, many inscribed with designs similar to Mogul arabesque patterns.

‘The first time we see the Death Eaters, in *Goblet of Fire*, the masks are only partially on their faces,’ explains Bliss. ‘But in *Order of the Phoenix*, I thought it would be creepy to cover the whole face. The idea was to create a uniform look across the group, but give each one still their own particular designs or motifs so they could be personally identified.’   

Jany Temime then took the engravings on the masks as points of reference for embroidered patterns on their clothing.

Alas, the filmmakers behind *Chamber of Secrets* had to find another way.

The light blue car (license number 7990 TD) that appears in the second film was an authentic 1962 Ford Anglia 105E, built in Ford’s factory in the United Kingdom. Special effects supervisor John Richardson took out the engine and gutted the vehicle to make it lighter, and then fitted it onto a rotating crane with a special joint called a gimbal head.

This let the filmmakers rotate, pitch, and roll the car backward and forward. They then fit the gimbal head onto the back of an American pickup truck with specially adapted suspension and outriggers so that they could create all kinds of flying effects while on the move.

The Ford Anglia made the [Muggle](/collection/muggles) news when, in 2005, the press reported that the car had been stolen from a film studio and found in a ruined castle in Cornwall. In fact, the car reported stolen was just one of many prop cars used in the making of the film.

‘We had 16 different Anglias,’ reveals John, ‘all of which were differently adapted.’

Some of them were cut in half to allow for filming inside, others had racing engines for high-speed driving, and others were in various stages of being smashed for the scene where the car crashes into the [Whomping Willow](/features/whomping-willow "The Whomping Willow"). According to John, the special effects team also built ‘wild’ cars that had been running around in the [Forbidden Forest](/features/the-forbidden-forest "The Forbidden Forest") for a year.

__The two-faced one__  
[Professor Quirinus Quirrell](/writing-by-jk-rowling/professor-quirrell), Defence Against the Dark Arts professor in Harry’s first year at Hogwarts. Walking, talking proof that appearances can be deceptive.

__The slippery one__  
Gotcha, [Lucius Malfoy](/features/lucius-malfoy). It takes a daring man to lie to Lord Voldemort. Daring or foolish? We’ll go with the latter.  

> ‘My Lord, I was constantly on the alert,’ came Lucius Malfoy’s voice swiftly from beneath the hood. ‘Had there been any sign from you, any whisper of your whereabouts, I would have been at your side immediately, nothing could have prevented me –’ <br>

Harry, Hermione and Ron started Dumbledore's Army. They met in the Room of Requirement, where Harry taught them everything he’d learned from his experiences facing dragons, Dementors, Death Eaters and the Dark Lord himself.  

Here are some of those spells, to help jog your imagination the next time you daydream about joining Dumbledore’s Army...

## Expelliarmus  

Almost beautiful in its simplicity, the Disarming Charm is frequently used in wizarding duels, forcing one’s opponent to drop their wand.  

As soon as a wizard casts this charm by bellowing ‘Expelliarmus’, a jet of red light shoots from their wand. Harry has the members of Dumbledore’s Army practise the spell in pairs.  

## Stupefy

Stunning is one of the most useful spells in the wizard’s arsenal. It renders the victim unconscious.  

The effects of the Stunning Spell may be counteracted by ‘Rennervate’, but will also wear off with time on their own. Another method of avoiding the spell is to deflect it with a Shield Charm, which Harry does teach his D.A. comrades.

## Levicorpus

In the film *Order of the Phoenix* members of Dumbledore’s Army practise the spell on each other in the Room of Requirement under Harry’s supervision, and Luna Lovegood goes on to use this one on a Death Eater in the Ministry of Magic.

The incantation ‘Levicorpus’ can be cast silently or spoken aloud, resulting in the victim being suspended in mid-air by their ankle. There is a counter jinx, called ‘Liberacorpus’.

## Reducto

This spell splits a solid object into pieces or even into a fine dust. Members of Dumbledore’s Army then proceed to use the curse during the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, smashing the shelves in the Hall of Prophecy.

## Expecto Patronum

The Patronus Charm is the most difficult spell Harry attempts to teach Dumbledore’s Army. Many witches and wizards are unable to produce a Patronus at all. 

Remus Lupin originally taught Harry how to master this tricky charm when Harry needed it to protect himself from the Dementors who were paying him unwelcome attention. The charm requires the incantation ‘Expecto Patronum’ combined with intense concentration on a single, extremely happy memory. The Patronus then acts as a shield, with Dementors feeding on it rather than the wizard himself. 

Harry’s Patronus takes the form of a stag (his father’s Animagus), Hermione’s is an otter, Ron’s is a Jack Russell terrier, Luna Lovegood’s is a hare, Ginny Weasley’s is a horse and Cho Chang’s is a swan.

Harry teaches the charm to Dumbledore’s Army for the purpose of protection from Dark creatures like Dementors, but the spell also has another use, devised by Dumbledore. He invented a way of using the Patronus to deliver messages, a tool both he and members of the Order of the Phoenix utilise for secure communication.
