## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

## Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley
He was the famous Boy Who Lived. The one who brought down the Dark Lord as a baby. She was the fearless [Weasley](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-weasleys).  The one who believed anything was possible with enough nerve. Together they were a Dark-wizard-fighting, Quidditch-loving power couple.

And while their relationship might not have seemed inevitable to begin with – seeing as Ginny could barely string a sentence together in front of her crush and Harry barely noticed her – when they got together in Harry’s sixth year, it felt right. Harry and Ginny were exactly what each other needed and after three children and half their lives together, they were still as strong as ever.

## Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley
This relationship might have been a slow burn, but it was worth the wait. [Hermione](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) and Ron went from two people who could barely tolerate each other, to two friends with a habit of quarrelling, to an endgame pairing with two children... who still loved to bicker.

Luckily for us, we got to witness the whole thing play out from start to finish. While she claimed that he had the emotional range of a teaspoon and he liked to refer to her as a know-it-all, we know that they truly loved each other and had one thoroughly tested and thoroughly unbreakable connection. They were even planning to renew their vows!

## Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour
Mrs Weasley might have been reluctant to initially give this relationship her blessing, but we know that Bill and Fleur were a pair for the ages. From Bill giving Fleur English lessons to Fleur standing by Bill after he was attacked by Fenrir Greyback to their spectacular wedding, these two were undoubtedly a team. They also seemed to share a strong moral compass and were unafraid to fight back against Voldemort and shelter those who needed it at their home, [Shell Cottage](/fact-file/locations/shell-cottage).

## Nymphadora Tonks and Remus Lupin
One of our favourite and also most heart-breaking relationships happened between a bright-haired Metamorphmagus and a [werewolf](/fact-file/creatures/werewolf).

Tonks and Lupin were a couple that just made sense. Like Yin and Yang, they balanced each other perfectly – Lupin’s reserved and studious personality in harmony with Tonks’ bright and vivacious nature.

We wish that these two could have had more time together – their story had only just begun. Yet, even though they only had a few short years together, their son Teddy lived on as a permanent reminder of their love.

## Arthur Weasley and Molly Weasley

We couldn’t do a roundup of wizarding world couples and not mention one of the strongest, longest-lasting and refreshingly normal relationships now, could we? If soulmates exist, then that’s what Arthur and Molly Weasley were. Yes, he might get on her nerves with his [Muggle](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) obsession and determination to understand the true function of a rubber duck.

And yes, she might play a little too much Celestina Warbeck. But this pair were made for each other. Having been together since school, they had seven wonderful children, a loving family home and a bond stronger than the force of ten Whomping Willows.

## Draco Malfoy and Astoria Malfoy
Whilst Pansy Parkinson seemed to be Draco’s possible love interest at school, the witch he ended up with was quite different indeed. Astoria Malfoy was no nasty bully. In fact, she was the anchor that Draco needed when finding his way in a post-Voldemort world. She didn’t subscribe to the idea that [pure-bloods](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/pure-blood) were superior, seemed to be innately kind and brought light and joy into Draco’s dark and often lonely life. Although she unfortunately died, she appeared to have changed her husband for the better. And their son Scorpius? Well, he continued her legacy of proving that Malfoys could be kind and openminded.

While this is more about a crush than a couple, did you notice that Draco and Astoria’s son, Scorpius, had a bit of a thing for a certain Granger-Weasley? His clumsy attempts at trying to get Rose to like him in *Cursed Child* were very adorable… if rather awkward.

## Victoire Weasley and Teddy Lupin

There was one budding relationship we caught a glimpse of in the closing chapter of *Deathly Hallows* – that of Teddy Lupin and Victoire Weasley. This pair might have managed to slip under the radar (and avoid the overexcitement of their family already picturing wedding bells), if it wasn’t for young James Potter catching them snogging on [platform nine and three-quarters](/fact-file/locations/platform-nine-and-three-quarters). Obviously, James *immediately* told everyone he could find – isn’t that what annoying younger cousins are for?

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott
This is a relationship that we never got to see in the books or the films but was confirmed by J.K. Rowling. Neville Longbottom ended up with Hannah Abbott – a Hufflepuff who had been in his year at school. Whilst we didn’t see much of Hannah, we can see why these two might have been drawn to each other. Both were members of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army), both had quite a bit of anxiety when it came to their academic performance, and both had first-hand experience of how Dark magic could tear apart a family. As two characters who were no strangers to heartache, we’re glad they found their happily-ever-after together, married and living above the Leaky Cauldron.

In *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2*, things end a little differently for Neville, with him off to search for Luna, telling Harry he is ‘mad for her’.

## Luna Lovegood and Rolf Scamander 

Yes, you read that right, our favourite free-spirt ended up with a Scamander – and not just any Scamander – the grandson of [Newt](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/newt-scamander) and Tina no less.

Rolf turned out to be a chip-off-the-old-block and became a Magizoologist himself – as did Luna. Together the pair of them lived a life of adventure, travelling the world where they discovered and catalogued a range of mysterious creatures. The pair were also parents to twin boys – Lorcan and Lysander.

## George Weasley and Angelina Johnson 
We must admit, we were pleased to see that George Weasley found someone to spend his life with. After the death of Fred, he could have easily spent his days alone, pining for the missing half of him. But he didn’t. He ended up with fellow member of the Gryffindor Quidditch team, [Angelina Johnson](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/angelina-johnson). She was loud, determined, a force to be reckoned with and probably exactly the kind of person George needed to help pull him out of his grief.

## Minerva McGonagall and Elphinstone Urquart
Finally, we wanted to touch upon a little-known relationship, that of Professor McGonagall and her husband (yes, she was married), Elphinstone Urquart. Before she joined Hogwarts as a teacher, Minerva McGonagall briefly worked for the Ministry of Magic.

There she met her boss, Elphinstone Urquart, who took a shine to her. The pair of them later married and lived happily together in a cottage in Hogsmeade. Sadly, that happiness was short-lived. Three years into their marriage, Elphinstone was tragically bitten by a [Venomous Tentacula](/fact-file/plants-and-potions/venomous-tentacula) and died. McGonagall found that it was too painful to remain in the home they shared together, and she moved back to Hogwarts. Here she kept her broken heart hidden from everyone but her friend, Albus Dumbledore.

In Harry Potter there’s Divination, Astronomy and prophecies – all used to make sense of the mysteries of the universe and the great beyond. But what about astrology? We know Professor Trelawney did touch upon it, but do any of our favourite characters happen to display personality traits that are unique to their star sign?

Well, we thought it would be fun to find out! As it is Aquarius season, we’re looking at the eccentric Ravenclaw, Luna. Of course, any similarities may be a total coincidence. We’ll leave that up to you to decide! Why not share this with your Aquarian friends and see what they think?

## A true original 
One trait that Aquarians seem to share are their eccentric personalities. They are out-of-the-box thinkers, the ‘mad professors’ of the zodiac, the dreamers – the true originals. You won’t catch an Aquarian following the crowd. As the astrologer Joanna Martine Woolfolk said: ‘(Aquarians) like being different. You not only march to a different drummer, you make up new music as you go along.’ Just like Luna.

[Luna](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/luna-lovegood) was about as unique and eccentric as they come. Her mind worked in a way that was unlike any other. Whilst her friends thought about homework, she was musing over the ‘Rotfang Conspiracy’ (gum disease has never been so dangerous). When her peers were starting to worry about their love lives, she was pondering whether there might be Nargles in the mistletoe. Whilst others might stick to talking about the score and tactics while commentating on a [Quidditch](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/quidditch) match, she found that too mundane – admiring the shape of the clouds was much more fun. And this is just us scratching the surface when it comes to Luna’s eccentricity – nobody else was quite like her.

## Won’t compromise on ideals
Now almost on the other side of the coin (or Galleon if you will), Aquarians can be rather stubborn. They might have minds that contemplate grandiose ideas and dreams, but once they settle on an idea, they will not let it go or compromise. On reflection, we think Luna could be a bit like that too.

You might be sceptical, but hear us out, we think you might just agree. If you were to suggest to Luna that the Crumple-Horned Snorkack *might* not be real (seeing as no one has ever spotted one… or even heard of one to be honest) she would refuse to believe you. In fact, when [Hermione](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) tried to do just that, she was met with a withering glare. And even when Luna was informed that the horn she and her father kept in their house had exploded – quite clearly making it an [Erumpent](/fact-file/creatures/erumpent) horn – she still wouldn’t budge and insisted it belonged to a Snorkack. For Luna, Snorkacks were the hill she was willing to die on and no amount of evidence would ever change her mind.

## Truth telling and wisdom
As an Air sign, Aquarians are meant to be great communicators. Combined with their astrological symbol, the Water Bearer, where the ‘water’ being poured by them means truth, those who fall under this star sign are often full of honest and perceptive insights. We think this can be applied to Luna as she too was full of her own unique wisdom. She would often come out with things that demonstrated the keen skills of observation that lay beneath her dreamy façade. 

Remember when she managed to sum up [Ron](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ron-weasley) in a single statement – casually pointing out that whilst he was funny, he did have a tendency to say unkind things? Such an insight might have made those around her uncomfortable, but she was only speaking the truth. 

Then there was her deep understanding of how others viewed her. She knew they saw her as ‘Loony’ Lovegood, but she remained unphased by it. Luna knew exactly who she was and even said to [Harry](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter), quite plainly, that she knew other people expected him to have ‘cooler friends’ than her. And whilst that might be the view of her fellow [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) students, if we were to be honest… we don’t think there’s anyone quite as cool as Luna.

## Unique fashion sense
As a star sign that prides itself on its individuality, you won’t be surprised to hear that Aquarians are known for their distinct fashion sense. Whether they’re wearing a showstopping hat or the loudest shirt they can get their hands on, their fashion sense is... out there.

Doesn’t that sound like a certain Ravenclaw we all know and love? The radish earrings. The large, colourful [Spectrespecs](/fact-file/objects/spectrespecs). The cork necklace. All of these helped to make Luna her wonderfully wacky self. We doubt she’d dream of putting on any old jeans and a jumper – why stifle who you are? Luna liked to embrace her eccentricity and didn’t care what others thought. Like the time she wore some super silver spangly robes to a [Slug Club](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-slug-club) party. Others may have pointed and giggled but it didn’t stop Luna from being true to herself.

## Kind
When thinking about who the kindest characters in Harry Potter were, we’re sure Luna Lovegood is one of the names that pops into your head. Yes, she might be slightly off-the-wall, but she also possessed one of the most genuine and decent souls. There are definite parallels here with the Aquarius star sign. Some astrologers have even said Aquarians are among the kindest people in the world and you would be hard pushed to find a finer friend.

There were plenty of examples of Luna being just that. When Hermione was upset at Ron and [Lavender](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lavender-brown) being together, she comforted her. When Harry was struggling in the aftermath of Sirius’ death, she talked to him and lessened the ‘terrible weight in his stomach’. When [Dobby](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/dobby) died, she was the one to reach out and close his eyes – an act of kindness and respect that many witches and wizards wouldn’t have afforded a house-elf. While Aquarians can be stubborn and can live in their heads, like Luna, they are also compassionate people with no malice in their hearts.

## Hermione and Ron are our one true pairing
We can’t believe that there is any debate to be had here. [Hermione](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) and [Ron](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ron-weasley) were meant to be together – that’s just the way it is. 

Yes, the two of them liked to bicker. Yes, she might have thought he had the emotional range of a teaspoon. And yes, he might have thought that she was a know-it-all, but one thing was undeniable… Their spark. Even when they were fighting, their banter was top notch. They played off one another’s energy and came alive when verbally sparring. 

Then there was the attraction which became increasingly obvious between the pair. Whilst jealousy is an ugly emotion, both Hermione and Ron felt it. Firstly, when she went to the Yule Ball with [Viktor Krum](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/viktor-krum) and then when he started dating [Lavender Brown](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lavender-brown). While we don’t condone the way they behaved – teenage emotions can be wild – the fact that they couldn’t stand to see the other with anyone else speaks to their desire to be together. 

Hermione didn’t have that kind of connection with Harry. Of course, the pair of them loved each other, but it was a bond that felt familial rather than romantic – Harry even said that Hermione was like a sister to him. There was no frisson or intense emotion when the two of them talked. Instead, there was friendship, respect and a clearly platonic bond – proving that boys and girls can be best friends. Wouldn’t it be a shame to ruin that by suggesting their relationship *had* to be romantic because they got on so well?

We also think that Hermione and Ron were *good* for each other. As the old adage goes, opposite attract, and that’s exactly what happened here. Where Hermione could sometimes be too serious, Ron was there with his laidback humour to balance her out. And when Ron lacked emotional intelligence, Hermione brought balance with her perceptive insights. Their differences were one of their greatest strengths, allowing them both to grow together and learn from one another. 

With Harry, Hermione didn’t have that balance. The two of them, whilst supportive of each other, were too serious to be a couple. Harry himself lamented the lack of laughs they had in *Goblet of Fire*, when he found himself spending an extended amount of time with Hermione in the aftermath of his fight with Ron. They both needed someone who would bring out their lighter sides and they couldn’t be that person for one another. 

Finally, we have to mention how Hermione and Ron would always find each other – even when they weren’t a couple in an alternate reality. In that exact situation in *Cursed Child*, they were miserable and chose to give their souls to the [Dementors](/fact-file/creatures/dementor) so they could be together in another world. If that doesn’t prove to you that they were inevitable then nothing will.

## No! It should’ve been Harry and Hermione!  
Let’s rewind a moment. While the Harry Potter books were still coming out in the mid-noughties, the story still unfolding, the fandom was rife with predictions on how things were going to end: would [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) be vanquished? Who was going to die? Who would Hermione end up with?!  And although we now have our answer amidst a clatter of [Basilisk](/fact-file/creatures/basilisk) fangs, with *Harry Potter and the Cursed Child* confirming that Hermione and Ron did indeed live happily (yet bickering-ly) ever after, some fans still insist it could’ve ended another way. 

After all, while Hermione and Ron spent most of their Hogwarts years at each other’s throats, [Harry](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) and Hermione’s relationship was always gentler, kinder, easier. The pair seemed far more in tune with each other, while Ron’s jealousy over Hermione usually resulted in multiple upsets. Sure, some argue that true love is forged through the flames of passion, but what about a love that is more sustainable, more honest, more congenial… more, dare we say it, happy? 

In those (frequent!) moments where Hermione and Ron had fallen out, we actually get to see a lot of Hermione and Harry together – and how peaceful and productive they are as a duo. After Harry and Ron’s big fallout during *Goblet of Fire*, we see Hermione emboldening Harry. In fact, Harry flourished in her company, becoming a better wizard and smashing that first task with her help. Ron usually just copied Hermione’s homework. Isn’t a couple supposed to be equal? 

Even J.K. Rowling herself has said in past interviews she wonders if it should’ve been Harry and Hermione instead, pondering if Ron and Hermione’s union ended up being ‘wish-fulfilment’. It’s a fair point. At times, Hermione and Ron’s situation felt downright unhealthy rather than gentle ribbing. How many times did Hermione wind up in tears over something Ron said? At times, you could argue that Ron was borderline possessive – infuriated when she went to the [Yule Ball](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/yule-ball) with Krum, policing her choices rather than acquiescing. 

In *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows*, we get to see a physical manifestation of Ron’s feelings, when his experience with [Slytherin’s locket](/fact-file/objects/slytherins-locket) reveals that he too had thought about Harry and Hermione together. Years and years of not confronting his feelings had turned his love for Hermione into something sour. And leaving Hermione and Harry alone in their darkest hour only shone a light on how much stronger that bond was. In the film, this idea is taken even further, with their unforgettable dance to Nick Cave’s *O Children* only further convincing us of their power together.

Sure, emotional maturity is something Ron was able to work on, and 19 years later, all seems well in Ron and Hermione’s married world. But there are so many subtle moments between Hermione and Harry that we just can’t shake off…
