## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

Ugh, travelling on the Hogwarts Express with a bunch of young and eager students – how terrible. There’s nothing cool our exciting about it. After all, who on earth gets excited about going to school? You love to maintain an edgy, unbothered image and people find that they are both in awe and intimidated by you in equal measure. ## Feeling snackish? You’d be hanging around the Trolley Witch with her trolley of treats…
We don’t know about you, but we know that there’s nothing worse than feeling hungry and there not being a single snack in sight. In fact, it makes us pretty angry (or hangry if you will). Luckily the Hogwarts Express is packed full of delicious treats. There are Chocolate Frogs, Cauldron Cakes, Bertie Bott’s Every-Flavour Beans, Pumpkin Pasties and so much more – the [Trolley Witch](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/trolley-witch) always keeps it well stocked. So, if you’re the type of person who loves all kinds of food, always keeps an emergency chocolate bar on their person and should be avoided at all costs when peckish, then we think you’d be at your happiest hanging around the food trolley… even if it is just to  make sure that no pesky wizard in glasses insists on taking the lot leaving nothing for the rest of the train.

## Just want a good old natter with your friends? You’d be hanging out with Harry, Ron and Hermione…
For Harry, Ron and Hermione, the Hogwarts Express was a good place to sit and chat. Whether they were talking about heavy topics like the return of Voldemort or lighter ones such as Ron attempting to turn [Scabbers](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/scabbers) yellow, it was a place where they had a few uninterrupted hours together and served as a nice break from their time at school… which was full of drama, mystery and battling one of the Darkest wizards of all time. If you just want a place to chill and have a natter, we think you would be happiest sat with these three. Maybe you also have a life which is constantly hectic and while you’re not trying to take down Voldemort, juggling work, school, friends and family amongst other things is still very full on. You would love to have some time just to watch the world go by and would relish just hanging out with the golden trio on this iconic scarlet steam train.

One of the most venomous villains of all the Harry Potter stories had to be [Dolores Umbridge](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/dolores-umbridge). Whilst she wasn’t always as obviously evil as Lord Voldemort, she was responsible for a lot of (often entirely sanctioned by the Ministry) cruelty – like punishing Hogwarts students or wrecking the lives of [Muggle-borns](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggle-borns). Although there’s no excuse for her behaviour, we wanted to poke around in that brain of hers to see if anything interesting came to light…

## The best colour of all time… 
It was clear to everyone that Umbridge had a penchant for one particular colour. Everything she owned seemed to conform to her favourite palette and that was the colour blue… just kidding, it was obviously pink. From her fluffy pink cardigan to the parchment she scribbled her nasty notes on, she was always on brand. We reckon that she spent hours carefully curating her saccharine persona – ruminating over every tiny detail that went far beyond her fashion choices. Everything about Umbridge was girlish and twee, including the doilies in her office and her tinkling voice. It was all a deliberate facade to mask who she truly was inside and that’s someone who adored punishing people…

## All the pesky people who need to be punished 
Speaking of which, there was nothing that seemed to bring Dolores Umbridge more joy than thinking up cruel and unusual ways to ‘discipline’ others. Who else would have a pink (naturally) sticky note on their [Ministry of Magic](/fact-file/locations/the-ministry-of-magic) desk to reminding themselves of who was still ‘To be punished’ (in this case Harry)?  She was at her happiest when inflicting pain upon others and it wasn’t just limited to one wizard. She probably had a mental list of all of those she would like to be cruel to – from [Professor Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) to Muggle-borns. That was just the tip of the iceberg. Remember the way her ‘toadlike’ mouth would stretch into a smile as Hogwarts students were forced to write lines in their own blood using her awful black quill? Yeah, that still makes us queasy. We have no doubt that Dolores Umbridge dedicated a great deal of brainpower to these horrific punishments and enjoyed every minute of it – what a truly loathsome person.

## How to become as powerful as possible 
One of Umbridge’s other greatest loves was power. She was cunning and manipulative and would stop at nothing to take as much of it as she could get. Her brain must have been full of plots and schemes – some more successful than others. And in fairness, she did seem to manage to move up through the ranks at the Ministry of Magic and (briefly) at Hogwarts. Let’s not forget, she managed to secure the role of [Defence Against the Dark Arts](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/defence-against-the-dark-arts) teacher, Hogwarts High Inquisitor and (technically) Headmistress all in the space of a year. And when her career at the wizarding school crashed and burned – she still managed to thrive at the Ministry where she became Head of the Muggle-born Registration Commission while [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) was in power. Although she was very happy to go along with Voldemort’s view of the world – she was very much a bigot – her predominant motivation seemed to be more about how much authority and influence she could secure because for Umbridge it was all about well… Umbridge.

## That liar Harry Potter
There was one wizard that we imagine took up far too much space in Umbridge’s brain – [Harry Potter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter). To Umbridge, he was a pesky fly in the ointment on her road to having total control over everything at Hogwarts. Not only did he cause unrest amongst the students, set up [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) (a group that was clearly meant to undermine her) but he refused to break, no matter what she did to him. He would not stop telling everyone that Voldemort had returned and went so far as to say so in an article in [*The Quibbler*](/fact-file/objects/the-quibbler). To top it all off, she ended up leaving Hogwarts after she followed him and Hermione Granger into the Forbidden Forest where she ran afoul of a giant and a herd of centaurs. We imagine plenty of time was dedicated to thinking about how to stop this pesky teenager – how dare he get in her way?

## Cats… obviously
So, we might have found one thing that we have in common with Dolores Umbridge and before recoiling in horror please hear us out! Both we and the odious Umbridge share a love of cats. With their teeny tiny paws, adorable whiskers and haughty attitudes – what’s not to love? From the plates that hung in her office with pictures of frolicking kitties to her [Patronus](/fact-file/spells/the-patronus-charm), we can understand why they were on Umbridge’s mind. Although, in some ways her love of cats made her even more sinister. Who wouldn’t look at her collection of wide-eyed bundles of fluff and think that their owner might be similar? We all know that Umbridge was about as warm and fuzzy as a Hungarian Horntail. Her collection of cute cats was yet another form of camouflage (alongside her favourite colour) for her wicked ways – she would rob you of your rights with a smile on her face before you could even say ‘meow’.

## Peeves!
There was one very large, very mischievous personality missing from the Harry Potter films – [Peeves](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/peeves)! The resident Hogwarts poltergeist was known for causing havoc and for being the thorn in Argus Filch’s side. Whether he was dropping walking sticks on Neville’s head, making up rude rhymes and names (Potty Wee Potter for one) or throwing water balloons at passing students, if there was chaos in the corridors – you could guarantee Peeves was at the centre of it. Though sometimes Peeves’ knack for creating pandemonium came in useful, like during the Battle of Hogwarts when he also joined the fight against the Death Eaters…

Even as they stood braced, looking for the opportunity to act, there came a great ‘wheeeeeeeeeeee!’ and, looking up, Harry saw Peeves zooming over them, dropping Snargaluff pods down on to the Death Eaters, whose heads were suddenly engulfed in wriggling, green tubers like fat worms.

## The Department of Mysteries
Ah, the Department of Mysteries. This was a place that caused Harry great pain in the *Order of the Phoenix*. While the film showed the death of Sirius, the discovery of the prophecy and Voldemort appearing at the [Ministry of Magic](/fact-file/locations/the-ministry-of-magic), there were a few details that were left out. When Harry and his friends arrived at the Ministry on their misguided rescue mission, they found that the Department of Mysteries contained a multitude of – you guessed it – mysteries. Obviously, there were the prophecies, but there were also the floating brains that attacked Ron. There was the Time room which ended up causing a Death Eater’s head to revert back to a baby’s head. There was the chamber all about space with floating planets. And let’s not forget the room that wouldn’t open. We must say, this has to be one of the most fascinating and terrifying departments within the Ministry and we only got to see a fraction of the secrets that it contained…

## Marietta Edgecombe
If you have only seen the films, you might be surprised to hear that it wasn’t [Cho Chang](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/cho-chang) who betrayed Dumbledore’s Army to Professor Umbridge – it was Marietta Edgecombe. A friend of Cho’s and a fellow Ravenclaw, Marietta (reluctantly) joined the DA. After months training alongside everyone else, she ended up confessing all to Umbridge in her office. However, it wasn’t without consequence. Turns out, the piece of parchment used for the sign-up list had been hexed by the one and only Hermione Granger. After snitching on her fellow members, a series of hideous purple pustules erupted across her nose and cheeks spelling the word SNEAK. The hex had been done so well, that even Madam Pomfrey had difficulty removing them.
