## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

When you think of the villains of Harry Potter Voldemort is the obvious one – along with his band of Death Eaters and the loathsome Dolores Umbridge. But we think that Harry’s very unpleasant uncle, [Vernon Dursley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/vernon-dursley), should be up there too. Prejudiced, mean and small-minded, he was a major cause of Harry’s unhappy childhood. And while there is no excuse for his behaviour towards his nephew, we wanted to poke around in that brain of his and see if anything interesting came to light…

## We’re sure drills took up some room in his head
Vernon Dursley was the director of Grunnings – a firm that made drills – so its unsurprising that they were often on his mind. Whether he was driving to work thinking about the large order of drills that had been placed or giving a long a boring monologue about them over dinner when Aunt Marge came to visit, these power tools always seemed to put him in a good mood. Well, except for *that* disastrous dinner party. You know – the one where Uncle Vernon was trying to schmooze with the Masons in the hope that Mr Mason would buy a lot of drills. Instead, there was chaos with a [house-elf](/fact-file/creatures/house-elf), magic, a smashed pudding, a swooping owl and no successful sale. But aside from that, we reckon drills were up there as one of Uncle Vernon’s favourite things. We might not understand that passion but each to their own we guess…

## Ruminating on the wonders of his perfectly normal family 
If there was one thing that Uncle Vernon prided himself on, it was being very normal. His house was neat and square, his career wouldn’t raise eyebrows and his family fitted seamlessly into his narrow view of the world. [Dudley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/dudley-dursley) was a chip off the old block with his boisterous (what we would call bullying) ways. [Petunia](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/petunia-dursley) was his perfect partner who shared his belief in the importance of keeping up appearances. His sister Marge was just as (if not more) prejudiced than he was. The Dursleys were a perfectly horrid reflection of Vernon and that was just the way he liked things. We imagine he took a great deal of pleasure in thinking up new ways to show off – like sending Dudley to the elite Smeltings school with its fancy uniform and outdated discipline policy or making sure all the neighbours could see his fancy company car. With such a carefully curated image it would be an awful shame to have an unwanted nephew ruin it all…

## His hatred of anything ‘abnormal’… including Harry
As we’ve previously mentioned, Uncle Vernon didn’t like stuff that sat outside the teeny tiny boundaries of what he considered normal. He was so stubborn and set in his ways, that anything different was to be feared, judged and avoided at all costs. Magic and his terrible treatment of [Harry](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) is an obvious example of this. In Vernon’s mind, Harry was a threat to his perfectly ordered life and had to be hidden away – there’s a reason Harry’s bedroom was a cupboard for so long. Like most people’s prejudices, this fear stemmed from a lack of understanding. Magic was not something that he recognised in his life, so it had to be something that was immoral.

This fear turned into hatred and anger and Harry was often in the firing line. Not only did he shout at Harry and belittle him (like when Harry tried to talk about his dream of a flying motorbike), he also locked him in his room as punishment, left him out of family excursions, didn’t protect him from the insults of his horrid sister and tried to suppress who Harry really was. Knowing that his teenage nephew had the magical ability to blow up his entire life (not to mention his sister) would have only made his rage worse. For a person who tried to pretend magic didn’t exist, Vernon Dursley spent a lot of time worrying about it.

## His moustache… probably
Finally, Uncle Vernon was known for his rather large moustache. In fact, it was so prominent that it almost felt like a character in its own right. Whether it was bristling with anger, had egg hanging from it or even when it was being pulled out in clumps by the irate Dursley, it had presence. Understandably, a moustache like that needs maintenance and as someone who liked to keep everything in line, we imagine Vernon dedicated a fair bit of time (and thought) to moustache grooming – especially after the pulling it out in clumps incident.

Many Weasley family members were there right from the beginning of the story – Ron was one of Harry’s best friends. Fred and George made us belly laugh pretty much from the moment we saw them. Mrs Weasley, after only meeting Harry once, sent him homemade Christmas presents!  And Percy... well he showed us just how important the role of a Prefect was at Hogwarts. It’s safe to say that in *Philosopher’s Stone* the Weasleys made their mark as individuals. Yet, it wasn’t until Chamber of Secrets that we saw them all together as a family unit – and what a family. Warm and welcoming, they swiftly became firm favourites of ours. 

Now we have to admit that it was difficult to pinpoint just one excellent Weasley family moment – there have been many. From Mrs Weasley presenting Harry with her brother’s watch when he came of age to spending a wizarding Christmas at The Burrow to Bill and Fleur’s wedding day (without the disruption at the end), we were hard-pressed to pick just one chapter. Yet, we kept circling back to the moment in *Chamber of Secrets* when Harry went to their house for the very first time and we think you’ll understand why...

‘Touchdown!’ said Fred as, with a slight bump, they hit the ground. They had landed next to a tumbledown garage in a small yard and Harry looked out for the first time at Ron’s house.

It looked as though it had once been a large stone pigsty, but extra rooms had been added here and there until it was several storeys high and so crooked it looked as though it was held up by magic (which, Harry reminded himself, it probably was). Four or five chimneys were perched on top of the red roof. A lop-sided sign stuck in the ground near the entrance read ‘The Burrow’. Round the front door lay a jumble of wellington boots and a very rusty cauldron. Several fat brown chickens were pecking their way around the yard.

‘It’s not much,’ said Ron.

‘It’s brilliant,’ said Harry happily, thinking of Privet Drive.

After an incident with a house-elf and Aunt Petunia’s pudding of sugared violets, things had become pretty much unbearable for Harry at Privet Drive. Confined to his room and fed through a cat-flap installed in his bedroom door, he felt like a prisoner. When Ron, Fred, George and a flying Ford Anglia prized the bars off his bedroom window and came to his rescue we knew things could only get better for him… and they certainly did.

After a flight back to the village Ottery St Catchpole, Harry saw The Burrow for the very first time and it couldn’t have been more different than that of the too-clean, characterless and suffocating Privet Drive. Ramshackle and clearly held together by magic, it was obviously a loving family home – something that Harry desperately needed. 

Not only did we see some familiar faces like Mrs Weasley and Ginny again, but we also met Mr Weasley – another wizard who would become a father figure to Harry. But most importantly, we got to witness the Weasley family in their element. Their in-jokes, their teasing (Mrs Weasley’s crush on Gilderoy Lockhart), their bickering (well if you are going to fly a car illegally...), it was exactly the opposite of Harry’s experience growing up. 

It was the very first time that Harry was also able to get stuck into life in a wizarding family. And after a hearty breakfast, he got to partake in wizarding chores like de-gnoming the garden. He saw what it was like to live in a house where magic was the norm. In short, Harry got to experience an entirely different type of homelife.

‘YOU COULD DO WITH TAKING A LEAF OUT OF PERCY’S BOOK!’ yelled Mrs Weasley, prodding a finger in Fred’s chest. ‘You could have died, you could have been seen, you could have lost your father his job –’

It seemed to go on for hours. Mrs Weasley had shouted herself hoarse before she turned on Harry, who backed away. ‘I’m very pleased to see you, Harry, dear,’ she said, ‘Come in and have some breakfast.’

What really made us fall in love with the Weasley family, was the welcome Harry received. The Dursleys never made Harry feel like he was wanted or that he belonged. He was the permanent outsider – barely tolerated, ignored where possible and treated terribly when acknowledged. In this chapter, despite the fact she was furious with her sons, Mrs Weasley made him feel immediately welcome. It was like she was expecting him, and the offer of breakfast showed that there was always room for him at their table. This was something Harry wasn’t used to, and her acceptance showed him how he should be treated by a loving family. 

This also marked the start of Harry’s long and happy relationship with the family as a whole. Yes, Ron had been his best friend but soon every member of the family became, well, family. For all intents and purposes, he was a Weasley. He was welcome during the holidays. He played Quidditch in their orchard. The family fought for him and protected him. Arthur Weasley took him to his Ministry hearing. Molly and Bill came to support him as family before the third task of the Triwizard tournament. He fell in love and started a family with Ginny – we could go on and on. And you could say it all began here in *Chamber of Secrets* when he was officially welcomed into the family home.

We had to finish on Harry’s comment at the end of the chapter – it sums everything up really. Before this, the only place that Harry had felt truly happy was Hogwarts. Now Harry had another place where he could feel safe and loved and it was all thanks to the Weasleys.

## Hello Justin! How do you feel about Harry Potter: Magic Awakened finally launching worldwide?

There’s a big sense of relief! I’ve been on the project for a year and a half, but there have been some people who have been on it for much, much longer.

The best part of releasing a new game is getting it into the hands of the fans for the first time and seeing what they love about it. We’ll keep creating content and keep expanding the game moving forward. There are some really cool updates coming in the year ahead.

## Harry Potter: Magic Awakened has such an interesting animated style – how do you think the wizarding world lends itself to this more hand-painted aesthetic?  

The visuals in Harry Potter: Magic Awakened are truly unique for the mobile space and this art style was one of the key reasons why I wanted to work on this project. It lends itself so well to the Wizarding World because it’s one-of-a-kind.

The art style is very “painterly” and there is texture and technique to the brushstrokes that make up the backgrounds and characters. The combat levels have a unique visual look – they take place on books, so there’s this very strong picture-book style that runs through the entire game. Hopefully, it’ll remind fans about reading the books for the first time.

## What was your relationship with Harry Potter before you took on this project? 

Like millions of other people, I read the books and I watched all the movies when they came out, but I was a grown-up.

It’s funny because we had houses at our school when I was growing up, so there are so many strong nostalgic elements for me. Harry Potter always felt like a magical idealised version of the 70s, so it always strongly resonated with me. Even though I wasn’t 10-years-old when the first book came out, it reminded me of being a kid at school again.  

## Mobile gaming has come so far in the past ten years – how have these innovations inspired you in your work and with Harry Potter: Magic Awakened?

Just the fact that the complexity of the types of games we can now play on our phones is approaching the quality you could only see on console and PC just a couple of years ago. With Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, it looks more like we’ve made a movie.

## What can we expect from the plot and the characters of Harry Potter: Magic Awakened?

Harry Potter: Magic Awakened is set about 10 years after the Battle of Hogwarts. When creating the game, we asked ourselves, “what are some of those characters involved in the battle doing now?” Some of the answers to those questions have come from *Harry Potter and the Cursed Child*, but we’re set in the interim moment.

So, for example, Neville is professor of Herbology at Hogwarts now, McGonagall is Headmistress, you can hang out with Hagrid quite a bit, and Flitwick is still teaching Charms! We also have lots of brand new characters too. We’re a very strong narrative game and we have a whole bunch of new students for you to hang out with.

## What can you tell us about the new characters?

I’m excited to introduce Daniel, Lottie, Ivy, Robyn, Cassandra and Kevin to our fans – they’re the main students that you, as the player, hang out with and go on adventures with. We’ve already seen that Cassandra, your quintessential Slytherin ‘mean girl’, is our most popular character in China!

And there are already people cosplaying as characters from the game. The animators and the voice actors have done such a phenomenal job on the characters. The actors who voiced our canonical characters absolutely nailed their roles too. For example, Dumbledore (voiced by the multi-talented Jeff Bergman) shows up in a couple of places, and the voice acting is astonishing.

## And what do you think is most going to excite the fans about this game?

I think there are three huge chunks of the game that are going to resonate with different people: the mini-games, the extremely strong narrative, and the collectible card game system which is the central pillar of the title.

Some people are going to play this like it’s a new book. In the game, we have a bunch of strong, compelling characters, so a large portion of the game is experiencing this brand-new narrative. We have mini games where the players can go to Hogwarts classes, including Care of Magical Creatures, History of Magic, Ancient Runes, Defence Against the Dark Arts and more. You can play with your friends, and even get a report card at the end of term. I think there’s a portion of players that are absolutely going to love the Dance Club feature – it’s more the Viktor and Hermione fantasy rather than the Harry and Ron fantasy of dancing! That’s going to be a perfect place where our social players can show off their fancy clothes and dance with their friends. 

The thing I’m really excited to see the players experience is the collectible card game. We have this extra tactical layer where you can move around a battlefield and choose where to cast your spells. There are currently over 70+ cards that you can collect and put together to build decks, with more to come. We also have these character-themed cards called Echoes, and you can have one associated with your deck that gives you advantages that affect your entire strategy. For example, if you want to build a deck focused on magical creatures, you’d pick Newt Scamander as your Echo. I’m incredibly excited to see what the best decks end up being and how the best players use their cards.
