## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

## It was where Hermione and Krum bonded…
The library might be a place for learning, but did you know it could also set the scene for romance? When Hermione and Krum turned up at the Yule Ball together everyone was surprised (Ron was plain furious). However, it turned out that Krum had fancied Hermione for ages. He had been coming to the library every day to talk to her but had struggled to pluck up the courage to say anything. Although, his plan had nearly backfired as Hermione had found his presence annoying rather than endearing to begin with…

>Viktor Krum was in the library an awful lot, too, and Harry wondered what he was up to. Was he studying, or was he looking for things to help him through the first task? Hermione often complained about Krum being there – not that he ever bothered them, but because groups of giggling girls often turned up to spy on him from behind bookshelves, and Hermione found the noise distracting.

## There was the time Harry broke into the Restricted Section
If you were given an Invisibility Cloak what would be the first thing you do? We doubt it would be heading off to the library. Yet, in what we consider to be a very Hermione move, it’s exactly what Harry did on his quest to discover more about the elusive Nicolas Flamel…

>The library was pitch black and very eerie. Harry lit a lamp to see his way along the rows of books. The lamp looked as if it was floating along in mid-air, and even though Harry could feel his arm supporting it, the sight gave him the creeps.

## It was where Harry learned about his ‘Wheezy’
This is one time where the books in the library did little to help Harry – though he really should have started preparing for the second Triwizard task sooner. After falling asleep amongst the books the night before the task began (because that would help), he was awoken by Dobby. Luckily, he proved to be much more useful than the library had been… and we got to discover his excellent name for Ron.

>‘Harry Potter *will* do the task!’ squeaked the elf. ‘Dobby knew Harry had not found the right book, so Dobby did it for him!’

## Hermione was Petrified near the library
Ok, so technically this happened *near* the library rather than *in* the library, but it was such a big event we felt it needed to be included. We knew that as a Muggle-born Hermione was in danger with the Basilisk on the loose, but it was still a shock when we discovered that she had been attacked. It somehow made it sadder that it was right by one of her favourite places too.

>‘This will be a bit of a shock,’ said Professor McGonagall in a surprisingly gentle voice as they approached the hospital wing. ‘There has been another attack ... another double attack.’

## Alicia Spinnet was sabotaged here
This incident proves that yet again the library is not a boring place to be. In fact, it can be downright dangerous… if you happen to be a Quidditch player who is due to play a very important match and your rival happens to spot you.

>When Alicia Spinnet turned up in the hospital wing with her eyebrows growing so thick and fast they obscured her vision and obstructed her mouth, Snape insisted that she must have attempted a Hair-thickening Charm on herself and refused to listen to the fourteen eye-witnesses who insisted they had seen the Slytherin Keeper, Miles Bletchley, hit her from behind with a jinx while she worked in the library.

## Harry and Ginny ate some chocolate at their peril…
You don’t want to get on the wrong side of Madam Pince – as Harry and Ginny discovered. As librarians go, she seemed pretty ferocious. But then again, who eats chocolate in a library? You’re just asking for trouble.

>Harry looked at her. Perhaps it was the effect of the chocolate – Lupin had always advised eating some after encounters with Dementors – or simply because he had finally spoken aloud the wish that had been burning inside him for a week, but he felt a bit more hopeful.

## The time Scorpius tried to pay Rose a compliment
Scorpius clearly had a soft spot for Rose Granger-Weasley – but he was truly terrible at approaching her. Out of all the things he could have said when trying to pay her a compliment, he compared her to bread – just what everybody dreams of hearing. Luckily for us though, it gave us a Scorpius moment that was awkward, endearing and also funny.

## McGonagall’s chimney
We reckon Professor McGonagall wished she didn’t have a fireplace in her office. The number of times her poor carpet had dust and soot trampled into it by old students was enough to make anyone wince. However, we enjoyed her witty responses to the situation and were thoroughly amused by the sorry saga of McGonagall’s office carpet…

## When Ron and Hermione decided to renew their vows
In typical Ron and Hermione style, their romantic decision to renew their vows was also pretty amusing. This pair were the masters of bickering banter, so it only made sense that this important moment was steeped in their trademark style of communication. It also made us giggle – always a bonus.

## If you are very strategic person… you’re like Oliver Wood
If you’re the person that lives by mottos such as ‘failure to prepare is preparing to fail’, then we think you’re most similar to Oliver Wood. The captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team was nothing if not organised. He was famous for his rigorous training regimes (including some criminally early starts), motivational speeches and complicated diagrams – all designed to try and lead Gryffindor to victory. He certainly had a strategic mind and if you’re like him, then so do you. ## If you’re a determined leader… you’re like Angelina Johnson
When Oliver Wood left Hogwarts, and the Gryffindor Quidditch team needed a new captain, it was Angelina Johnson who took on that job. She more than lived up to Oliver’s reputation as a strong captain. She had very high expectations of her team and didn’t stand for any of their nonsense. Her dedication to her role as captain was apparent and she was clearly a strong leader. If you’re like Angelina, then we think you’re someone who is willing to take charge when necessary. Whether you’re the captain of a sports team, the head of a project or a manager in your job, you are a natural leader who is tough (but fair) and often a force to be reckoned with.

Do you like to have all the latest gadgets? Do you upgrade your phone every time a new model comes out? Do you think that any piece of technology more than three years old is irrelevant? Do you even know what VHS is? If this sounds anything like you, then we think you’re most similar to Draco Malfoy. Who can forget just how smug he was when he got hold of the Nimbus 2001? He was thrilled to have the latest model of broomstick – which would only enhance his Quidditch performance. Now, we’re not saying you share any of his nasty or smug traits, but you do have a similar appreciation for all the most up to date appliances and gadgets. Anything that makes life easier is a win in your eyes… and you reckon it helps to make you look cool too.

## If you are an excellent team player… you’re like Katie Bell
Katie Bell was a great team player and there was no trio quite like the three Gryffindor Chasers – Katie, Alicia and Angelina. These three seemed to be incredibly in sync with one another, anticipating each other’s moves and scoring vast numbers of points for their team. Katie also got on well with the other members of the squad. She laughed at Fred and George’s jokes, she was the one who helped new team member Ron sort out his Quidditch robes and she didn’t hold it against him when he accidentally gave her a nosebleed with a rogue Quaffle. We think you’re most like Katie if you’re someone that does their best work when part of a team. We imagine that you’re of the opinion that two heads are always better than one. You’re probably more of an extrovert and would hate to work in a job that is solitary by nature.

## If you’re known for your fantastic sportsmanship… you’re like Cedric Diggory
There were loads of brilliant things about Cedric Diggory – he was smart, talented, popular and he always showed excellent sportsmanship on the Quidditch pitch. As a Hufflepuff, he liked things to be fair. So, when he caught the Snitch before realising Harry had come off his broom due to Dementors swarming the pitch, he immediately tried to call for a rematch. He didn’t have to do that. He hadn’t cheated or done anything wrong (even Oliver Wood was forced to admit this) but he wanted to do what he felt was right – even if it would help an opponent. If you would have done the exact same thing, then you’re most like Cedric. You have strong principles and like to be as fair as possible in any situation. You’re not prepared to compromise your morals to achieve your goals and have probably been called honourable before.

## 8th: Blast-Ended Skrewts
The honour of most dangerous Care of Magical Creatures lesson has to go to the Blast-Ended Skrewts. These horrible creature with the blasting ends, stingers and suckers were really rather… gross. Over the course of several lessons, Harry and his class suffered cuts, bruises, burns and they still couldn’t figure out one end of a Skrewt from the other. Any lesson where you have to escape from a group of large, rampaging, lobster-looking creatures and take shelter in Hagrid’s hut is always going to be considered rather hazardous in our eyes. There’s also the fact that Hagrid seemed to have been involved in some rather dodgy dealings when it came to acquiring these beasts. We’re not sure that their creation was strictly legal, or Ministry approved…

## 7th: Hippogriffs
Ok, so we have a soft spot for Buckbeak – he was a faithful companion to both Hagrid and Sirius and could be perfectly lovely. Harry had no problem approaching him and he even let Harry ride him! However, we have to acknowledge that picking a group of Hippogriffs as your first lesson as a teacher was quite a risky move for Hagrid… especially when your class contained Draco Malfoy. Of course, it was Draco’s arrogance and failure to listen to Hagrid that led to him getting hurt. He should never have been rude to Buckbeak – Hagrid had even warned the class that insulting a Hippogriff could be the last thing they’d ever do. Yet, a lesson ending with a trip to the hospital wing has to go quite high up the danger list, even when it was Malfoy’s fault.

## 6th: Thestrals
Poor Thestrals, they have a bit of an unfair reputation – what with being closely associated with death and misfortune – but we think the Care of Magical Creatures lesson on them wasn’t too high in the danger stakes. Obviously, we know that the Thestrals at Hogwarts were quite tame, but Hagrid did admit that they would bite when annoyed. And for those students who couldn’t see them, we can imagine it was a rather unnerving experience. Professor Umbridge didn’t help matters either – what with her demeaning attitude towards Hagrid which led him to be a little distracted when discussing their finer points. We guess we also have to bring up that they’re *technically* classed as dangerous by the Ministry of Magic and other teachers, such as Grubbly-Plank, wouldn’t show them to a class until N.E.W.T. level. Although, we feel a lot of the negativity surrounding them is due to their association with being a bad omen and they’re more misunderstood than dangerous.

## 5th: Bowtruckles
You might be surprised to find the lesson on Bowtruckles in the middle of our list. After all, these creatures are tiny little sticks – what harm could they possibly cause? Not to mention that this lesson was run by Professor Grubbly-Plank who was known to be less… eccentric than Hagrid when it came to lesson planning. Yet, you would be wise to not be too complacent around these miniscule magical creatures. Bowtruckles have long, sharp fingers which they will use to try and gouge a person’s eyeballs if angered. While they seemed happy enough to be handled by the members of the class (as they tried to draw annotated sketches of them), Harry soon learnt the importance of not being distracted while holding one. After accidentally squeezing his Bowtruckle far too hard, it reminded him of his presence by leaving two deep cuts in his hand. Although, we can hardly hold that against the Bowtruckle. If we were about to be snapped in half by a preoccupied teenager, we’d be pretty livid too.

## 4th: Unicorns
Both Grubbly-Plank and Hagrid spent time introducing these majestic creatures to Harry’s class. Overall, both lessons seemed pretty safe. When Grubbly-Plant showed them the adult unicorn, the girls in the class spent a lot of time petting it. We don’t think a teacher as savvy as Grubbly-Plank would have let them do that if she believed they were in any danger. However, it was bad news for the boys, unicorns aren’t their biggest fans. In fact, they all had to stand away from it for their own safety. Nevertheless, when Hagrid introduced them to the golden baby unicorns, everyone in the class was allowed to feed them sugar lumps – turns out they were more trusting than the adults. We think these lessons should sit in the middle of our list as they only posed a risk to some of the students.
