## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

## Sowing the first seeds
From his very first year, we saw that Neville was green-fingered. While he often struggled with his wandwork and potion-making, he had a natural flair for magical flora. During his end-of-year exams, he had a right old disaster when it came to Potions. However, his Herbology grade more than made up for it. Not only did it help him to scrape through to his second year at Hogwarts, but it probably helped to plant that first seed of confidence in his abilities, which slowly grew over the next few years…

## Seeing his ability take root
By the time we came to *Goblet of Fire*, Neville’s Herbology prowess had become common knowledge. Even Harry recognised it was the class that Neville felt most confident in, and it was the one was best at too. Neville’s peers weren’t the only ones to take notice, so did his teachers. While Professor Moody had his own nefarious reasons for presenting Neville with a Herbology book, we still like to believe that Professor Sprout had told him just how brilliant Neville was at her subject.

## That Stinksap incident 
Oh, Neville’s Mimbulus mimbletonia… he was so excited to own one and show Professor Sprout this very rare plant. His enthusiasm was certainly infectious, and we enjoyed seeing just how invested he was in magical plants. However, it takes a certain kind of person to love a shrub that resembles ‘a diseased internal organ’ and had an even more unfortunate defence mechanism. The Stinksap that burst forth from it, drenching all those within Neville’s compartment on the Hogwarts Express, was rather unfortunate… but if we’re honest, it was also hilarious. Although, the timing couldn’t have been worse for poor Harry, as he found himself covered in a foul-smelling liquid right at the very moment Cho Chang decided to make an entrance.

>Liquid squirted from every boil on the plant; thick, stinking, dark green jets of it. They hit the ceiling, the windows, and spattered Luna Lovegood’s magazine; Ginny, who had flung her arms up in front of her face just in time, merely looked as though she was wearing a slimy green hat, but Harry, whose hands had been busy preventing Trevor’s escape, received a faceful. It smelled like rancid manure.

>Neville, whose face and torso were also drenched, shook his head to get the worst out of his eyes.

>‘S – sorry,’ he gasped. ‘I haven’t tried that before ... didn’t realise it would be quite so ... don’t worry, though, Stinksap’s not poisonous,’ he added nervously, as Harry spat a mouthful on to the floor.

## Watching him blossom 
Of *course* Neville got an Outstanding in his O.W.L – he didn’t deserve anything less. We know we couldn’t name a single other student that could match his enthusiasm and talent. It was wonderful to see someone who had struggled with their self-esteem blossom in such a way, and we hope that he was very proud of himself, we know we were. Also, after many years of teachers, we mean Snape, making him feel inadequate, we were delighted to see Professor Sprout holding Neville up as a shining example to his classmates.

## Neville’s love in full bloom  
After Hogwarts, Neville became a Herbology professor, and it was just wonderful. We reckon he made a brilliant teacher – especially as we imagine he took extra time with those who struggled with self-confidence and would make them feel valued. It was also lovely to see that he was imparting his wisdom and knowledge to his friends’ children and the next wizarding generation. Neville and Herbology really were the perfect pair.

__Spoiler warning! This article contains spoilers for *Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore*. If you haven’t seen the film yet, you might want to turn back now…__

## The case for Teddy
Was there ever any doubt? *Of course* the answer to ‘who is the cutest companion?’ is Teddy the Niffler. *Of course it is*. We fell in love with Teddy even before we knew his name, and upon learning his name, this only served to escalate our adoration for the little guy even further. 

We first learnt about the existence of these fluffy, snout-nosed mischief-makers in *Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire*, when Hagrid ups the ante in his Care of Magical Creatures class by setting the students a gold-digging challenge with Nifflers. And, as we came to learn, there is nothing a Niffler loves more than snuffling around for shiny things. ‘I wish I had a Niffler,’ bemoaned Ron – and who could blame him? Skip backwards a few decades, and we would meet Newt Scamander’s Niffler companion, who, though adorable, did tend to get Newt in trouble due to his kleptomaniac tendencies. And yes, looking after a Niffler would require a lot of admin, but that is kind of the point. It is woven into the fabric of a Niffler’s entire purpose for being that they hunt down shiny things – so you can’t really get *too* mad at them. And you have to hand it to the Nifflers – they can get quite clever when it comes to acquiring trinkets. Think of Teddy’s sleight of hand (or should that be, ‘sleight of paw’?) when he managed to snatch Gellert Grindelwald’s blood vial at the end of *Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald* – a crucial item that would help Dumbledore in our latest instalment of the series. Without this link in the chain, perhaps things might’ve gone differently in the struggle against the Dark wizard. So, case in point; Nifflers aren’t just a cute fuzzy face.  

And if we have to labour the point further, mark on these two words. Baby. Nifflers.

## The Case for Pickett
Ok, so Pickett might not be as squidgy or as fluffy as Teddy, but we still maintain that he is the cuter of the two. Firstly, he’s so tiny, you just want to scoop him up and put him in your pocket, and you can, because he’s literally pocket-sized. The way he is happily carried around by Newt in his jacket is beyond sweet. Then there is his little voice. The high-pitched squeaks he makes are just utterly delightful. In terms of appearance, this dinky Bowtruckle is cuteness personified.

Though his appeal is not just limited to his appearance but his personality too – especially when it comes to his relationship with Newt. Those two are inseparable and their bond is so strong. Who can forget the look on Pickett’s little face (in the first *Fantastic Beasts* film) when he thought he was going to be given to Gnarlack in a deal at the Blind Pig Speakeasy? Of course, Newt would never really give his faithful companion away, but the way Pickett stretched out his little arms to Newt broke our hearts and proved that Pickett truly loved Newt. 

Then there’s Pickett’s heroic actions in *The Secrets of Dumbledore*, when he helped Newt and Theseus escape the clutches of the Manticore from the Erkstag in Germany. Yes, Teddy did technically help too, but he was still easily distracted by shiny things. It was Pickett who was really determined to save his friend and showed that while he might be tiny, his heart is huge, and you couldn’t ask for a more loyal companion.

Pickett is a faithful, endearing, resourceful and (conveniently) pocket-sized companion. Out of Newt’s magical menagerie we think that he deserves to be recognised as the most adorable. In fact, we think you’d have to have a heart of stone to not be immediately won over by him, he’s just that cute.

## We learnt who Credence really is
At the end of the last film, Grindelwald told Credence he was really Aurelius Dumbledore – the previously unheard of sibling of Albus. However, that wasn’t entirely true. While Credence *is* a Dumbledore, he isn’t the brother of Albus, Aberforth and Ariana. In fact, he’s Aberforth’s secret son! Aberforth met Credence’s mother the same summer that Albus and Grindelwald met. Now, while living as part of Grindelwald’s followers, Credence began to write messages to Aberforth through a mirror because he was desperate to come home – though to begin with, he didn’t know he was writing to his father. Luckily, they were able to be reunited and Aberforth was able to take his ailing son home to care for him.

## Dumbledore and Grindelwald admitted they were in love with each other 
We always knew that [Dumbledore and Grindelwald](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/grindelwald-and-dumbledores-history-a-deep-dive) had a deep connection. Well, it had to be pretty powerful for them be willing to create that Blood Troth. However, this was the first time we heard Albus openly admit that he had actually been in love with the Dark wizard. Not only did he talk about it with Grindelwald, but he also opened up and told Newt about it too.

## Jacob and Queenie got married
From the moment that *The Secrets of Dumbledore* started, we could see that Queenie was regretting her decision to join Grindelwald’s cause. We also saw how forlorn and lost Jacob was without her. Call us romantics, but we can’t help but [root for this pair](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/why-we-cant-help-but-root-for-jacob-and-queenie). So, to have the couple reunite and finally see them get married was something we were thrilled about. And their small wedding was perfect! Jacob’s bakery made an excellent backdrop. Not to mention we got to see another witch and wizard have a moment…

## Newt and Tina were reunited 
Tina and Newt might have spent most of the film apart, but it was clear that she was always on his mind. The photo of her in his suitcase proved that. It was no wonder he was so happy (and adorably nervous) to see her at Queenie and Jacob’s nuptials. When she arrived to fulfil her duties as Queenie’s Maid of Honour, they had a rather cute interaction outside of the bakery… before being rudely interrupted by the arrival of Lally and Theseus.

## Bunty saved the day
Newt’s excellent assistant Bunty really had her moment to shine in this film. You could say that she was the one to save the day. After Newt’s case appeared to burst into flames, we were heartbroken. It was truly awful to think that his magical menagerie (containing the very important Qilin) had been destroyed. However, just when we thought all had been lost, a figure in green robes appeared and handed Newt the real case. It was Bunty in disguise! Turns out she had been protecting the real one all along. Newt’s magical creatures were safe, we could let out a sigh of relief and the Qilin could get on with its very important job. Go Bunty!

## The Blood Troth was destroyed
One crucial moment from this film was when Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s Blood Troth was finally destroyed. Before this, Dumbledore had been unable to fight the Dark wizard personally, as their pact meant neither could move against the other. Yet, when Grindelwald tried to kill Credence, both Albus and Aberforth tried to stop him. As Dumbledore was protecting Credence rather than attacking Grindelwald, when their spells met, their Blood Troth broke. Could this be the start of a chain of events that will one day lead to their famous duel, the one that would secure Dumbledore the Elder Wand?

## Vicência Santos is elected Supreme Mugwump – though Dumbledore was chosen first
Grindelwald might have tried to steal this very important election, but he was luckily thwarted at the very last minute. And when the adorable Qilin was set to choose the new leader, they decided on Dumbledore – even though he wasn’t even a candidate! Though whilst he was extremely flattered, Dumbledore did not want the role of Supreme Mugwump. While we do know from the *Harry Potter* series that Dumbledore did eventually take that position, his refusal in that moment reminded us of him turning down the job of Minister for Magic because of his fears of being corrupted by power. Nevertheless, he did suggest to the Qilin that there was yet another worthy candidate. That person turned out to be Vicência Santos, who was duly elected as the new leader.
