## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

## When she tried to steal the sword of Gryffindor
Only the most daring troublemakers would attempt to break into the office of the headteacher – it’s certainly not for the faint-hearted. And when the headmaster in question is Severus Snape, the supposed Death Eater, it would be totally normal to get cold feet. We can even imagine Fred and George feeling momentarily daunted at the prospect of stealing the sword. But Ginny Weasley was fierce, rebellious and unafraid of a challenge. Though her, Neville and Luna’s plan was thwarted, it didn’t make it any less impressive.

## When she joked about tattoos 
Ginny’s playful nature wasn’t just contained to her troublemaking – she was fantastically quick witted too. When quizzed about Harry’s alleged chest tattoo by Romilda Vane, not only did she improve upon the original rumour, but she also introduced the idea of Ron’s Pygmy Puff ink. We also appreciated the deadpan way in which she informed the trio of this development…

## Her determination to find out what was going on with the Order
Out of all the Weasleys, it was Ginny that seemed to share the impish streak which Fred and George were famous for – and the way she went about her eavesdropping was very reminiscent of the twins. Not only did she completely ignore the fact that she was far too young to hear about Order business, but she also chose to throw stinky Dungbombs at the door to see if it was Imperturbed, and that felt very Fred and George.

## Followed by her ability to come up with excuses on the spot
Ginny’s ability to come up with a cover story after throwing the Dungbombs was also very Fred and George. When Ginny was put on the spot by her mother (a formidable prospect) she didn’t break or even give a hint that she’d been up to no good. She kept her cool and moved things along smoothly – even if poor Crookshanks did get all the blame.

## Any time she unleashed her Bat Bogey Hex
Ginny’s Bat Bogey Hex was the stuff of legend. She managed to escape the Inquisitorial Squad by using it. She was invited to be a member of The Slug Club because of it. Even her troublemaking twin brothers recognised the power of it. And while many magical people have a signature spell, Harry and Expelliarmus for example, the fact that Ginny’s is something which is completely gross and ridiculous really reveals her roguish sense of humour.

## When Fred and George couldn’t help but be impressed by her abilities…
If there’s one thing that shows Ginny was the Weasley who could give Fred and George a run for their money, it’s the fact that the twins recognised her abilities themselves. They knew that while Ginny was small, she was also mighty, and it would be foolish to underestimate her. A trip back in time with the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child artwork: from then to now

From the cinematic creations conceived by design team MinaLima, to the carefully detailed illustrations of Jim Kay, so many facets of the wizarding world have been brought to life by an endless number of talented artists.

Whether it’s a lovingly hand-painted piece of fan art, or an epic installation at the Warner Bros. Studio Tours, it seems like every nuance of the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts stories has, at some point or another, been invigorated by talented minds. Just think of the delicate carvings of a characters’ wand or the glorious CGI magical creatures we see in the films designed from scratch. We’ve seen it all. Because what could inspire an artist more than the impossibilities of magic?

In 2016, *Harry Potter and the Cursed Child* was unveiled at London’s Palace Theatre, with the front of house adorned with a lone child trapped in a mysterious nest with wings. After years of associating Harry Potter with round glasses, the lightning bolt scar, or the rustic turrets of Hogwarts castle – the eighth story in the franchise had invented a new moment of iconography for a new Wizarding World era. 

Now, the hit play has rejuvenated its artwork as it prepares to reopen in theatres across the world, showing two figures swirling through time in swaths of deep purple. So, what do they denote? And how was it conceived?

It was a team effort to achieve the finished product, with Cursed Child’s production team and marketing agency AKA all contributing to the look and feel you see below. But it was down to creative agency Muse Creative Communications to fully conceptualise this fresh visual celebration of the play – and to build upon the original concept.

We spoke to co-founders of Muse, Shaun Gale and Marc Evanson on how they retold the tale of *Cursed Child* through a number of artistic concepts – and how they tackled such a challenge in the throes of a pandemic lockdown. The first job? Taking the original concept and building upon it with something fresh. 

“It feels like quite a long time ago now,” Marc said, when we asked him how it all started. 

“Shaun and I didn’t actually know each other before Cursed Child came along. Shaun had designed the original nest concept and when it came to actually realising that and creating key art, we met on the photoshoot, photographing the ‘child’... so in an odd kind of way, if it wasn’t for Harry Potter, Muse wouldn’t have formed. After that, we became friends, stayed in contact and things aligned in 2018 to create Muse. We were heavily involved in that first concept and it was really nice that Sonia [Friedman] and the producers reached out to us again recently to see how things could evolve.”

In the beginning, fans were urged to ‘keep the secrets’ of *Cursed Child*, to respectfully give time to those who wouldn’t get a chance to see the magic of the play for a while. This posed a challenge for the posters and artwork, with Muse creating something both ambiguous but layered with meanings. During his time at previous creative agency Feast Creative, Shaun conceptualised the child in a nest idea, which would soon go on to grace poster artwork for several products of *Cursed Child* across the world. It even sparked fan theories on what it all meant. 

“We were given fundamental key points: time travel, abandonment and protection,” Shaun explained. “I thought this was such a strong metaphor for abandonment, when a lone bird is left on its own in a nest – I just couldn’t think of a better way to reflect abandonment than that. And the wings kind of evoked time travel in a very metaphorical way. But fundamentally, ever since the beginning, there was also a subliminal image of the Snitch within the image that wasn’t coincidental.” 

“It’s always the classic part of the brief – we want to have something iconic,” Marc added. “it’s probably the most overused phrase, but everyone wants it, whatever that is. And to us, it’s something visually simple and often symbolic that really encapsulates the essence of the play. Creatively, we’ve been in this industry for many years and it’s a difficult thing to do – it’s probably the hardest thing to do, to create something simple. And actually, to have that memorability image that people do recall and to have longevity. What Shaun created so beautifully and brilliantly was this metaphoric creation, this image, which ended up being iconic.” 

With seven books and eight Harry Potter films already out and beloved by fans across the world, Muse faced the secondary challenge of trying to create iconography that was as well-known as what the book covers, and film posters had already tackled. The Harry Potter theatrical campaigns of the films, for example, famously employed darker themes in the artwork as the films progressed.

 As fans of Harry Potter already, (“I’d read all the books and seen all the films,” Marc laughed) the pair tried to remove themselves from what they already knew.

“When you’re working on something so well-known and there’s an automatic visual that people recognise, that was part of the challenge as well, to disconnect. It was still Harry Potter but a reimagination of it. And that was very important to convey that difference,” Marc said. “Everyone was involved, everyone was inputting their thoughts. It was very much an evolving process which I think really helped because there’s so many layers to the play. There’s such an enormous team involved, the set designs and costumes and lighting and sound – it’s phenomenal.”

So, the nest became a staple at the Palace Theatre in the centre of Leicester Square. And the pair, based in the UK, still get excited whenever they walk past. 

“Even now, friends and family send us photographs saying, ‘Look, we know the person who did that’ – and even now when I walk past it, I take photographs even though I’ve seen it a billion times,” Shaun admitted. 

Skip five years later, and *Cursed Child* became an international award-winning success worldwide, earning plaudits on Broadway, with other productions announced for Melbourne, San Francisco, Hamburg, Toronto and Tokyo. When the world stopped in its tracks in early 2020 in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, theatres, among other entertainment venues, were left devastated, shutting down in various countries for months.

During lockdown, the producers of *Cursed Child* decided to use this time of reflection to reimagine the play. It was recently announced that Cursed Child would return as a reimagined singular performance in New York, San Francisco and Toronto, moving on from its original two-part structure. 

As for the design side of things, Shaun and Marc returned to offer up new concepts, this time, looking at the story from a different perspective. The finished product is a striking development from the bronzes and browns of the original art – now showcasing grandiose, swirling clockwork, amassed in dark smoke and golden fire. The contrast of the light and darkness was very much intentional.

“We began working up a new look for the artwork in the depths of Covid when there wasn’t a lot of uplift and people needed hope. It was a very dark time for us all, and when we were working on this, it was a serious matter – so having something that could offer that light, that beacon, was really key,” Marc said. 

The new artwork focuses heavily on time travel: a key plot point in the play. Shaun and Marc worked on over 70 drafts of the artwork with this theme in mind before hitting the desired effect, all the while keeping the DNA of its predecessor. 

“It was evolution, not revolution,” Shaun explained. “This was moving on but to be sympathetic to the nest and the wings and that original shape, that structure, hopefully that’s still reflected subliminally when people see it.” 

“We realised the aspect of time in different ways and different plains were all circular,” Marc said. “That Snitch shape was something we found ourselves being draw back to. We did explore other concepts that didn’t have that but we kept on feeling like that synergy was so strong.”

Along with retaining those motifs, Muse were also tasked with other challenges, such as injecting the artwork with the energy of live theatre and weaving more elements of time travel within the entire piece. 

“While the nest was metaphorical and poetic – the desire here was to give more of an understanding of what is to come, what this spectacle really is. The energy and electricity and the magic were the key objectives,” Shaun said.

And as for creating this new artwork while working remotely in a lockdown? The team certainly got more creative than usual with their colleagues. In one of their older designs, which featured a wizard holding aloft a wand triumphantly, Shaun and Marc recruited their art director Miles Mittra to pose with... a toilet brush.

“With some clever retouching, he put a cape on himself, we changed the toilet brush to a wand, which was quite important!” laughed Shaun. “And we’d do Zoom calls, send sketches backwards and forwards, there was a lot of experimentation.” 

From there, the team worked on post-production with their photographer Seamus to bring the sketches to reality. 

“We’ve worked with Seamus many times before – he was the best person we worked with in terms of lighting,” Shaun said. “Even in post-production on the shots Seamus took, it was hours of retouching.” 

Seamus was instrumental in helping light the two shadowy figures we see on the poster - Harry and his son, Albus. The team worked together to create mystery in the figures, to pay homage to the several different actors who play Harry and Albus across the world. 

“Fundamentally, you’re creating a silhouette image of the two characters. That was part of the challenge of the brief as well – the central figures are Harry and Albus – but for longevity and to create a bit more of an iconic image, they’re recognisable – it’s about making sure their poses and expressions told a story, even if you could not see the expressions on their faces. So, to get the key lighting to create something that wasn’t a solid block of black was really important with the right photographer as well.”

So, with *Cursed Child*’s various returns to theatres across the world on the horizon, the future looks bright not just for Muse, who have already launched themselves into new projects, but for the many homes of *Cursed Child* across the world. 

“The future’s looking optimistic actually,” Marc said. “There’s a lot of positive producers out there and it’s amazing to see. We’ve been fortunate to be involved in some of these productions, and I know it must be so difficult when you do get a setback, but what it’s shown is – this industry will not get knocked over and stay down and it’s great to see.” 

“Shaun and I have had the privilege of seeing this show more than once, and it’s such an amazing production,” he added. “And it’s had a lot of meaning for us for simply being Harry Potter as well. Will there ever be a theatrical event as big and as worldwide as this?”

## When Luna recognised Harry despite the Polyjuice Potion
This small moment between Harry and Luna really demonstrated the depth of their friendship. Despite Harry drinking Polyjuice Potion and being disguised as red-headed ‘Cousin Barny’, Luna was not fooled for an instant. She knew Harry so well, that a little thing like having a different face wasn’t going to stop her from recognising one of her best buddies.

## When Ron complimented Hermione 
By the time the story reached the *Deathly Hallows*, the chemistry between Ron and Hermione was undeniable. However, what was also undeniable was that the pair of them (especially Ron) were useless when it came to doing anything about it. So, we loved this little interaction between them – finally they were moving in the right direction. We adored how bowled over Ron was when he laid eyes on Hermione and her playful response was equally as cute. 

>‘Nightmare, Muriel is,’ said Ron, mopping his forehead on his sleeve. ‘She used to come for Christmas every year, then, thank God, she took offence because Fred and George set off a Dungbomb under her chair at dinner. Dad always says she’ll have written them out of her will – like they care, they’re going to end up richer than anyone in the family, rate they’re going ... wow,’ he added, blinking rather rapidly as Hermione came hurrying towards them. ‘You look great!’

## When Hermione saw Viktor again
While we were always rooting for Ron and Hermione to make it work, we still couldn’t help but find it sweet that Hermione got all flustered when in the presence of Viktor Krum. As someone who is prized for their intelligence and logic, we found this giddy Hermione rather endearing…

## When Fleur made her entrance 
We felt a tad emotional when Fleur made her way down the aisle to meet Bill. Their wedding was a lovely oasis in the mess that had been Voldemort’s return, and to see two people so happy and so in love was a welcome relief. We thought it was very fitting that Fleur’s beauty seemed to enhance everyone else’s in that moment – like the way their wedding was a flash of light in the dark.

>A great collective sigh issued from the assembled witches and wizards as Monsieur Delacour and Fleur came walking up the aisle, Fleur gliding, Monsieur Delacour bouncing and beaming. Fleur was wearing a very simple white dress and seemed to be emitting a strong, silvery glow. While her radiance usually dimmed everyone else by comparison, today it beautified every- body it fell upon. ## When Bill and Fleur became husband and wife 
This one doesn’t need much of an explanation. You would have to have a heart of stone not to find this moment heart-warming. Bill and Fleur were meant to be, and their wedding sounds like it was straight out of a fairy tale. And honestly, whose special day wouldn’t be enhanced with a little bit of magic?

## When Luna didn’t need a dance partner 
Luna truly did dance to the beat of her own drum. It’s brilliant that she was happy to waltz by herself without a dance partner or care in the world – and it was so incredibly her. We also quite liked Ron’s admiration at her ability to not be bothered by what anyone else thinks. If we’re honest, we could all do with being a little bit more Luna.

## When Ron (rather grumpily) asked Hermione to dance
This was classic Ron and Hermione. While Ron was technically doing something sweet by asking Hermione to dance, he was doing it while defensive and grumpy about the presence of Viktor Krum. Though his angry demeanour didn’t seem to put Hermione off taking a twirl around the dancefloor with him. In fact, she seemed thrilled by the prospect…

## When Fred and George discussed weddings 
While this is more bittersweet than adorable, we still wanted to include it. We thought it was cute that Fred was thinking about what he would want for his future wedding, and we also enjoyed George sticking up for their mum. Knowing Fred’s fate, this interaction felt incredibly poignant and broke our hearts a little bit. But we’re very glad that the Weasley twins made the most of this final family event that they attended together.

## Neville ended up marrying Hannah Abbott
After everything that Neville went through, he certainly deserved to live happily-ever-after, and we were so pleased to learn that he did. Even though the film version of Neville seemed to have a crush on Luna, J.K. Rowling revealed that it was Hannah Abbott (a Hufflepuff from his year at school) that he ended up marrying. The pair of them even lived together above the Leaky Cauldron – which sounds like a lot of fun to us.

## He taught Herbology
Neville always had a passion, not to mention a real talent, for Herbology. He was happiest when learning about magical flora and fungi or tending to his beloved plants, such as his Mimbulus mimbletonia. Remember when Neville was so excited to demonstrate its defence mechanism? And it spurted Stinksap throughout the carriage on the Hogwarts Express – drenching everyone? Anyway, when we heard that Neville had gone on to become a Herbology Professor, we were thrilled. He even taught Harry, Ginny, Ron and Hermione’s children… even if they were reluctant to pass on their parents’ warm wishes.

## Neville’s parents defied Voldemort three times
When Professor Trelawney made her infamous prophecy, it talked of a boy who had been ‘born to those who have thrice defied’ Voldemort. Now we know that while Voldemort chose to believe the prophecy was about Harry, therefore marking him as his equal, it could also have applied to Neville. This means Neville’s parents had also resisted Voldemort three times – giving us a small insight into how brave Frank and Alice Longbottom were. A pair of highly skilled Aurors, they fought hard during the first wizarding war to bring about Voldemort’s defeat. And while we know their tragic fate, their courage is something to be admired – and their son clearly takes after them.

## His admission to Hogwarts wasn’t guaranteed 
There is only one way to gain admission into Hogwarts, and that is if your name has been written into the Book of Admittance by the Quill of Acceptance. When a child first exhibits any sign of magic, the Quill will try to write their name in the Book. However, the Quill is more lenient than the Book, which will sometimes snap shut and not allow the Quill to write down the name of the child, until they’re satisfied that they’ve seen sufficient evidence of their magical ability. 

This is what happened to Neville. As soon as he was born, the Quill tried to write his name down… but the Book was not having it. Everyone failed to notice the signs that suggested Neville was magical – for quite a number of years. For example, in the moments after he was born, he managed to shift his blankets to ensure he was tucked up tight. While the midwife spotted that he was looking a little more snug, she assumed his father had been the one to do it. It wasn’t until Neville’s great-uncle Algie dropped him out of the window, and he survived, that the Book was suitably convinced and allowed his name to be written.

## He used his father’s wand for years
Unfortunately (and rather unfairly), Neville’s magical capability was something that was often called into question. However, as we discovered in *Order of the Phoenix*, it turned out that Neville had been using a wand that belonged to his father. As we know, the wand chooses the wizard, so it might not have been a great match for him – and could have made learning magic even more tricky. Just as Harry never felt comfortable with the blackthorn wand, Neville could have been experiencing something similar, but for five years! While we won’t know for certain, it does raise the question of whether all of Neville’s struggles were down to his supposed lack of ability…

Neville was in desperate need of a new wand after his father’s broke during the Battle of the Department of Mysteries. Luckily for him, his gran was so thrilled about the courage and daring he demonstrated that night, she happily obliged. Neville purchased his wand right before his sixth year at Hogwarts and as it turns out, it was right before Ollivander was kidnapped by Voldemort…

>‘Yes, I thought Gran would be angry about all the publicity,’ said Neville, ‘but she was really pleased. Says I’m starting to live up to my dad at long last. She bought me a new wand, look!’

## Matthew Lewis wasn’t allowed to fix his teeth for ten years!
Neville Longbottom has a very distinct look. From the moment he made his appearance in the books he was depicted as a ‘round-face boy’. And as the films liked to stick quite closely to the description from the book, this caused Matthew Lewis, the actor who played Neville, a bit of a headache. As he revealed in an interview with The Independent, to try and capture the essence of Neville he wasn’t allowed to have his teeth ‘fixed’ for ten years! It was even written into his contract. While we are grateful that Matthew stuck it out and brought such a beloved character to life, we can’t help but feel a bit sorry for him... 

>‘And, yes, he did get his teeth “done”, which is basically shorthand for wearing braces. Not until he was through with being Neville, though; he was under contract not to fix his “pretty bad teeth” until filming had finished.’
