## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

Full of gorgeous imagery of real-world creatures alongside illustrations of the fantastic beasts we have come to love from the imagination of J.K. Rowling, we are led through the book by the curators and experts of the Natural History Museum and a host of other writers who specialise in the creatures – great and small – of this planet.

We learned an awful lot reading the book: about everything from insect-collecting equipment to Zouwu toys. But we’ve managed to whittle it down to the six biggest things.

## 1.	Conservation is a painstaking business

In a fascinating section written by Lorraine Cornish, the Head of Conservation at the Natural History Museum, we come to understand the behind-the-scenes work that preserves both the amazing objects on display and those stored away in the museum’s archives.

Take missing tiger whiskers: Nikki, one of the museum’s conservators, created false whiskers by inserting a thick nylon thread into catheter tubing, then used a heated spatula to flatten them into a whisker shape, cut them to various lengths with a scalpel, and painted them so they looked like the real thing. Different sizes were created to mirror the real whiskers on the other side of the tiger’s face. The attention to detail is pretty jaw-dropping.

Conservation is also a job with some risks. We see Cheryl, another member of Lorraine’s team, working on a scary-looking Colombian lesserblack tarantula, dating back to 1875! The spider hairs are potentially hazardous as they can cause swelling and itching of the skin, so when Cheryl was repairing one of its legs, gloves and tweezers were a must-have.

## 2.	There’s a dinosaur named after Hogwarts!

In a delightful case of life imitating art, scientists named a dinosaur *Dracorex Hogwartsia* in celebration of Hogwarts itself. Unlike the magical Hungarian Horntail, this huge beast was probably a plant eater and lived in a small herd, like the other pachycephalosaurs of its kind that roamed the Earth between 66 million and 140 million years ago. You can see a reconstruction of its magnificent head in the book and forthcoming exhibition.

## 3.	A different kind of evening wear

In an essay titled ‘The Naturalist Explorer’, Andrea Hart (Head of Library Special Collections) picks out Maria Sibylla Merian as a hero of hers – she was one of the first European natural explorers to study insects in the field. She set off from Amsterdam to the Dutch colony of Surinam in South America in 1699, accompanied only by her daughter. She wanted to fulfil a lifelong ambition to document and illustrate new species of insects and the plants on which they lived. But the European dress style she wore was ill-suited to the heat and humidity of Surinam, so she had to conduct much of her research at night. It was worth it: she made pioneering discoveries in European eyes, captured in brilliant paintings depicting the life cycle of butterflies and much more.

## 4.	We are living through an extinction event 

In his piece at the beginning of the ‘Endangered Species’ chapter, author and natural history writer Patrick Barkham has a stark warning for us from history. As he points out, a replica of the dodo – known as the Diricawl to those in the wizarding world – is a star exhibit in the Natural History Museum. Barkham describes the dodo as a ‘reproach and a reminder’ from history about how fast extinction can arrive. In the current era, which scientists are calling the Anthropocene because of the dominance of Homo sapiens (i.e. you and me), the Earth is losing its bewitching diversity of life more quickly than in the past many millions of years. Worryingly, this period is what some call the Sixth Great Extinction...

## 5.	... but there is still hope!

If that feels pessimistic, fret not, because we can all make a difference – that is the overriding message of the book and exhibition. The large blue butterfly actually became extinct in Britain in 1979. Fortunately, the species clung on in some European countries and was successfully reintroduced to Britain by Professor Jeremy Thomas after he collected caterpillars from Sweden for the task. As Patrick Barkham explains: ‘By learning exactly what made the large blue tick – a fascinating symbiotic relationship with a species of ant – he was able to recreate suitable meadowland habitat.

Today, each June, more large blues fly in south-west England than anywhere else in the world.’ If there was a planetary equivalent of House points, Professor Thomas would get a lot of them.

## 6.	Be more panda

Or rather, be kind to pandas, and everything else. Perhaps even more adorable than Nifflers, giant pandas were poached, and their habitat deforested, so that in the 1980s their numbers were reduced to as few as 1,114. It wasn’t until there were a few hundred left that a global movement started to save them. A panda census is taken every ten to fifteen years to keep track of their numbers. The most recent survey was carried out in 2014 and it estimated that there were 1,864 pandas living in the wild, and about another 300 in zoos and breeding centres around the world. Nearly two-thirds of all wild pandas now live in protected wildlife reserves and a handful of captive-bred pandas has been released into the wild. It’s only with the hard work and cooperation between the Chinese government, local communities and global wildlife organisations like the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) that the giant panda’s future looks brighter.

And that’s the biggest lesson from *Fantastic Beasts – The Wonder of Nature*: as we admire the myriad colourful species from the real and wizarding worlds, we are reminded that we can make a massive difference as individuals, but an even greater one if we work together.

__We love this description of the ‘opaline white’ sky that cascades over Hogwarts in this quote from Prisoner of Azkaban. And, naturally, Professor Flitwick is making the inside of the castle just as charming with some ingenious decorating ideas with the help of some fairies.__

## Drinking Butterbeer for the first time

__Speaking of Butterbeer, the first time Harry drinks the comforting concoction made us extremely jealous. The way this warming beverage is described here puts it on a whole level beyond our Muggle hot chocolate. The Christmassy setting of the pub with the roaring fireplace just adds to the ambience too.__

## Fred and George: snowballing connoisseurs 

> Hermione ploughed her way back to Hagrid’s cabin through two feet of snow on Sunday morning. Harry and Ron wanted to go with her, but their mountain of homework had reached an alarming height again, so they remained grudgingly in the common room, trying to ignore the gleeful shouts drifting up from the grounds outside, where students were enjoying themselves skating on the frozen lake, tobogganing and, worst of all, bewitching snowballs to zoom up to Gryffindor Tower and rap hard on the windows.

__Ron may have thought his Prefect status in his fifth year would’ve earnt him a bit of respect in the family, but this simply gave the Weasley twins more ammunition to flout his authority. Still, what’s more winterry than a snowball in the face?__

One of the snuggest ways of showcasing your house pride has surely got to be with a big woolly Hogwarts scarf. For this moment, we’re modelling the Gryffindor ones with Harry, Ron and Hermione, simply because they look quite cool and moody here, like they’re posing for a band album cover.

## Xenophilius Lovegood’s... actually, we don’t know what this is

We love Luna for her quirky fashion choices, and when we met Xenophilius, her dad, we discovered that the apple did not fall far from the tree in that department. Look at this strange thatched number we see him wearing here. What is it?! Another of the wizarding world’s greatest mysteries.  

## Hermione’s turtleneck of anxiety

During Harry’s first task at the Triwizard Tournament, a worried Hermione sneaks into his tent to wish him good luck wearing a very cosy turtleneck. Because when you’re fretting if your best friend is about to be eaten by a dragon, it’s always important to be comfortable.

You thought it was a bit chilly at Hogwarts? Step forward, the class of Durmstrang, who turned up for the Triwizard Tournament looking like immaculate models ready for a long walk in Antarctica. The coats! The hats! The boots! The browns and greys and creams! Now, this is how you keep toasty and still catwalk-ready. Super-serious, yet super-snuggly.

From Durmstrang to Beauxbatons – and here is Madame Maxime in the most striking coat the world has ever seen. It’s always fun to get yourself a dressy coat for the winter months to feel both fluffy and fabulous - and especially fun if that coat could also double-up as a magic eye optical illusion. 

## Dual purpose earmuffs

There’s nothing we hate more than red raw ears on a frosty day, so be sure to invest in a pair of earmuffs. In the wizarding world, fluffy earmuffs also double-up as a life-saving accessory that quietens the sound of screaming Mandrakes, who are known for their fatal cries. We love a piece of headwear with dual purpose! 

## Pink poncho of horrors

Dolores Umbridge strikes again. If it wasn’t enough that the short-lived Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher caused general despair among the students of Hogwarts during her tenure, she also delighted in wearing an array of pastel pink atrocities to further upset us. We include this choice not to appreciate it, but just to simply observe that it somehow exists.

## Neville: a wizard of many layers

We all know Neville loves to layer up in the colder months ([we have commented passionately on his choice of sweater vests before](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/an-appreciation-of-harry-potter-knitwear-web)) and here he is employing his Gryffindor-esque bravery by wearing *three* different patterns at once.

The checkered inlay of the coat, the lovely stripey Hogwarts scarf, and a fleece with *different stripes* on underneath! A bold choice for a character that would one day take on Lord Voldemort in a lovely knitted cardie. 

And, finally, a special shoutout to....

## Professor Slughorn’s dressing gown-turned-couch

You know on those lazy Sunday afternoons where you spend so long sitting on the armchair, you feel like you have become the armchair? Try telling that to Professor Slughorn, who quite literally turned into the piece of furniture to avoid talking to Albus Dumbledore one time. His pink, striped dressing gown even matched the armchair’s look.

Surely, when it comes to winter-time cosiness, nobody can defeat this incredibly dedicated attempt to achieve pure comfy zen.

The prospect of winter in the wizarding world conjures up a host of cosy images: a snow-covered Hogwarts, umpteen delicious feasts, endless games of Exploding Snap in the common room – we’d even put up with the icy chill of Snape’s dungeon classroom if the pay-off was getting to sit in front of a roaring Gryffindor fire.

But even in the wizarding world, winter isn’t all Weasley jumpers and Butterbeer. Witches and wizards seem to rely on a few little spells to help them through the colder months. Spells we think it would be quite useful to have in the real world, too. Here’s a few of them:

## Incendio – for keeping warm

AKA the fire-making spell. It’s probably obvious why Incendio would be useful during a cold snap – the ability to just point at a space and create a fire deserving of Hogwarts’ Great Hall would certainly come in handy.

You’d have to be careful, of course. To keep warm at Hogwarts, Hermione favoured the similar spell, the Bluebell Flame charm, which magically contained blue flames in a nice warm jar. 

A safer option altogether might be...

## Hermione’s Hot-Air Charm – for drying out

Remember when, in *Order of the Phoenix*, Hermione returned from Hagrid’s covered in snow, which she then just magicked off her robes with “a complicated little wave” of her wand? How great would that be? 

The idea of steam-drying your clothes as you are wearing them seems very economical. It is, indeed, a practical spell worthy of Hermione, and also one that might be useful if you were to, say, find yourself soaked in muddy rain-water after being splashed by a car driving through a puddle. 

Plus, this spell would be great for the splashy drivers themselves. There’d be no need to waste valuable morning minutes scraping ice off a windscreen if all you needed to do was blast your car with a bit of hot air.

## Impervius – for all-weather protection

Another Hermione-special, this would be especially useful for glasses-wearers because, yes, Impervius is the spell Hermione casts on Harry’s glasses so that they repel rain during a very wet Quidditch match. You’d never need to worry about steaming up your spectacles ever again with this one in your back pocket.

And presumably it can be applied to any garment you wish to protect from the elements. Hats. Shoes. Phones. Face masks. Seriously – with Impervius up our winter sleeves, would we even need umbrellas?

## Lumos – for dark afternoons

A lot of these spells are about dealing with the realities of bad weather, but another fact of winter life in the UK is that, at this time of year, it gets very dark, very early. 

Say you wanted to go for a run at 5pm in the middle of December – well, a cynic might say you’d be better off going in the morning, but if you had access to a wand and knew your Lumos from your Nox you could easily dismiss that cynic with a flick of your wand and a shout of this spell (it’s Lumos, just to be clear – Nox is the one that turns lights out.)

A head torch might be easier to secure, but surely a wand’s more reliable (and, let’s face it, a lot more exciting.)

## Tergeo and Scourgify – for staying clean

What is it about winter that makes everything feel grubbier? Mud gets crusted onto your shoes, the floors get covered in sludge, that horrible sleety snow leaves marks on your best coat. Well, if we could get the hang of what Tonks calls “these householdy sort of spells,” winter could do its absolute clothes-and-floor-destroying worst and nobody would ever know. Just imagine: there’d be no market for harsh chemical cleaning products and you’d never have to even think about taking your coat to the dry cleaners.

## The Refilling Charm – for obvious reasons

Hot Chocolate, Mulled Wine, Eggnog, Pumpkin-Spiced Latte... whatever your warming winter drink of choice, wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could just keep that mug/glass/tankard topped up without ever having to vacate your seat?
