## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

## Quidditch Through the Ages - Illustrated Edition

## Creevey brothers 

Every sibling duo on this list is pretty dynamic, but if we had to place a pair in last it would have to be the poor Creevey brothers. Colin and his camera alone were almost too much to cope with, but by the time Dennis came along and was sorted into Gryffindor Harry didn’t stand a chance at peace…

## The Patil twins 

The Patil sisters were not much of a duo in the books; with Padma off in Ravenclaw, Parvati was more likely to be seen arm-in-arm with Lavender Brown instead, gossiping at the back of a class. In the Harry Potter films however, Padma is a Gryffindor, creating far easier circumstances for the pair to be persuaded to go to the Yule Ball with Harry and Ron. Their complementary costumes and simultaneous speech make for a pretty perfect twin pair on-screen.

## The Scamander brothers 

We’d place Newt and Theseus Scamander in third spot because, though they unite when they need to, on the surface these siblings are polar opposites. With Newt’s Boggart taking the shape of desk job, Ministry man Theseus is quite literally everything meandering Magizoologist Newt fears. That being said, it doesn’t get much more epic than the moment in Crimes of Grindelwald where the brothers-in-magical-arms drive their wands into the ground in unison to help contain Grindelwald’s curse.

## The Goldstein sisters  

Another “fantastic” duo, the Goldstein sisters are far more of a double act than Newt and Theseus, and so they nab second place. When we meet them in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, they share an apartment and share thoughts, thanks to Queenie’s Legilimency. After losing their parents young, the relationship between the sisters is sometimes more akin to a mother/daughter dynamic, with Tina always looking out for Queenie, even when Queenie strays too far for Tina to follow.

## The Weasley twins  

Was there any real question when deciding who would get top spot in this ranking? Not really. The Weasley twins epitomise what it is to be a duo. Fred and George, George and Fred, Gred and Forge – it’s hard to say one without the other. Whether finishing each other’s sentences, or providing the punchline to the other’s joke, the Weasley twins are a true comedic double act. Even after the tragic events of the Battle of Hogwarts, it is impossible to imagine these two apart.

We know Harry, Ron and Hermione as well as we know our own friends. But *Cursed Child* also introduced us to a whole new generation of wizards and witches.

__MILD SPOILER WARNING: For those who have not seen Cursed Child, you may not wish to step further into this article - just in case. Although if you wish to know more, be our guest!__

## Albus Severus Potter

In *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows*’ epilogue, we meet a young, nervous Albus Severus, so named after the two Hogwarts professors Harry was inspired by. Albus serves as our hero in *Cursed Child*, unwittingly following in the footsteps of his famous father.

While Harry and Albus are seen not to get along in the play, Harry and his middle-son actually have a lot in common – particularly that they are both reluctant heroes. 

Albus finds himself in Slytherin at Hogwarts – the house he had worried about being chosen for. After this moment, his Hogwarts journey is marred by self-doubt, which affects his magical abilities.

Albus has two other siblings: his older brother, the mischievous James Potter Jr. and his younger sister, Lily Potter Jr. – who both get sorted into Gryffindor.

## Rose Granger-Weasley 

Very much like her mother, Rose Granger-Weasley embodies all the same grace, wit and intelligence of Hermione. She also bears Ron’s cheekier side and glides into Hogwarts with immediate confidence. 

Sorted into Gryffindor, Rose seems to excel in everything, and unlike Hermione, even has a knack for Quidditch, being chosen for her house team as a Chaser.

Despite a childhood friendship with Albus, and despite starting Hogwarts at the same time as each other, the pair start drifting apart in their earlier years at Hogwarts, with their separate Hogwarts houses not helping matters. 

## Scorpius Malfoy

Scorpius is the only-child of Astoria Greengrass and Draco Malfoy, and unlike Draco Malfoy, Scorpius seems very different to his father. Despite sharing the same physical attributes, such as the blond hair, Scorpius immediately displays an empathy his father did not at his age. He joins Hogwarts at the same time as Albus Potter, forming an unlike friendship on the Hogwarts Express. This grows when the two of them are sorted into the same house, Slytherin. 

Unlike Draco, Scorpius focuses his Slytherin-like determination into his studies, being an avid reader. He’s also a self-confessed geek and adores sweets. Scorpius sadly loses his mother during the play and is shown lamenting her death with a heartrending speech.

Although nervous and jumpy, like Albus, at the start of his Hogwarts journey, the young student becomes more self-assured as his adventures with Albus go on, despite having to contend with a rumour that he is Lord Voldemort’s son.

## Delphi (Delphini) Diggory 

At first, Delphi appears to be a plucky, colourful-haired helper working at St Oswald’s Home for Old Witches and Wizards, who focuses her efforts on her ‘Uncle’ the bereaved Amos Diggory, father of Cedric. But all is not as it seems.

Despite not attending a wizarding school such as Hogwarts, Delphi is a smart and hugely talented witch with a penchant for Darker magic. She has a tattoo of an Augurey – a mournful, magical bird that symbolises death.

## Albus Dumbledore’s portrait 

We are certainly aware that Albus Dumbledore is not a new character! But his portrait, that hangs at Hogwarts, feels too much of a character in its own right not to include him here.

All departed Hogwarts headmasters sit for their magical portrait – so they may look over their beloved castle forever. They even offer sage advise to the new headmaster, unless your name is Phineas Nigellus. But, as the kindly portrait of Albus tells Harry, he is merely “paint and memory”, despite embodying all the same wisdom and insight his subject once did. Apparently, the longer a subject spends with their painting, the more personality they will have. And we can tell, from this one, that Albus Dumbledore spent a lot of time with his.

## Hogwarts students 

A special shout out to some of the new Hogwarts students we meet in the play, beyond the children of Harry, Ron and Hermione.

## Yann Fredericks 

Yann is a young Gryffindor in the same year as Albus, who, like many other Hogwarts students, can’t help but gawp when Albus joins the school. Commenting that he has “the same hair” as his dad, Yann seems like a bit of a gossip. He hangs out with Rose Granger-Weasley, and is shown to have an aptitude for flying in his first flying lesson.

## Craig Bowker Jr 

The story of Craig is a tragic case. A stickler for the rules (we see him chastising Harry for breaking into a school dormitory in the middle of the night) this Slytherin Hogwarts student is named as a “good boy”, as he is callously murdered during the play. By who, we will not say. 

## Karl Jenkins 

Karl is a fellow student who cruelly dubs Albus the “Slytherin Squib”, due to Albus’s lack of confidence with magic, and seems to carry a bit of a nasty streak. He enjoys the rumours and gossip that surround Scorpius and Albus, and seems to be friends with...

## Polly Chapman 

Polly is a savvy student, also in Albus’s Hogwarts year, and joins in the gossiping about Albus when he arrives at school. She appears to have a biting sense of humour, saying of Albus: “even portraits turn the other way when he comes up the stairs”. 

Scorpius Malfoy, at one point, seems to have a bit of a crush on her, but this is short-lived.

We don’t know about you, but one of the scariest moments of the Harry Potter series was in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets when Harry and Ron were faced with Acromantula, Aragog.
